Minnesota Senate... that close

Minnesota still remains one of the three states with an undecided Senate race. Currently, incumbent Republican Norm Coleman leads challenger Al Franken by a mere 215 votes in a race where more than 2.9 million ballots were cast.

The Minnesota State Canvassing Board’s most recent election report today shows a separation between the candidates of roughly seven one-thousandths of one percent (.007%), making the results too close to call and a statewide manual recount will begin tomorrow.

Following the canvassing board’s recount decision, Norm Coleman’s campaign released a statement claiming, “Senator Coleman has, for the third time, been named the winner of the 2008 election.”

The statement cited the canvassing board’s rejection of Franken’s attempts to stop the recount as grounds for the official recognition of Coleman’s win as he is currently ahead.

On a conference all this afternoon, the Franken campaign responded to Coleman’s campaign stating, “The only person who has named Norm Coleman the winner of anything is Norm Coleman.”

In reference to the recount, the Franken Campaign stated that, “Tomorrow morning the vote count will be zero to zero, with more than 2.9 million to go.”

A brief filed yesterday by Franken requesting to re-examine previously rejected absentee ballots and add them to the count remains a pending legal issue, therefore the current vote tally could still not be inclusive of all eligible votes cast.

Franken’s campaign also made a point that it has not in any way attempted to stop or delay the recount.

Mr. Coleman, I regret that I was unable to burn the absentee ballots, because that is illegal.  Fortunately, hiding and disqualifing ballots is not.  But, alas, the voting officials are being a nuisance and keep discovering them.  However, I have not yet given up on trying to have Democratic votes omitted from being counted.  Trust me, I am doing my best, in which the RNC does best...to deceive.
Not as close in Alaska.  The Anchorage Daily News reports the latest numbers show Begich up by 2,374 over "Tubes" Stevens.
I was confused when I read this part "...The statement cited the canvassing board’s rejection of Franken’s attempts to stop the recount as grounds for the official recognition of Coleman’s win as he is currently ahead..."

I am following it pretty closely and Franken has never attempted to stop the recount.  However Coleman has done 120 attorney's worth of suppression.  All of the statistical data points to a recount that determines VOTER INTENT (by MN state by laws) will favor the Democrat, as those districts tend to use non standard methods of marking the ballot - often using an 'x' instead of filling in the oval - or circling the candidate of choice or crossing off the 'non choice'.  Apparently MN has pretty clear cut rules on how to determine 'voter intent'.

Interesting that Coleman's committee position is already being salivated over by a peer.  Don't let the corpse get cold before you pick it over.  Republicans are funny.  And MO certified today - a difference of 4,300 votes - to McCain.  UGH!

I am trying to figure out whether we do a recount, too.  I know there were still issues with various provisional ballots due to the election books going to the wrong locations.  Silly; but I want to live in a Blue state, without having to uproot my family - love my home, love my kids' school, my job.  etc.
No more trunk monkeys yet to vote?
It would be soooooo cool to see 'Free Loader' Coleman lose

Who'd pay his rent if he wasn't a Senator ?
Who'd buy his clothes if he weren't a Senator?
Who'd bribe his wife if he weren't a Senator?

Don't count your chickens before they hatch
I guess ol'Jim from the DFL will have to show up again tonight after chores and fill out a few more ballots for Franken.
Is Al Franken really the best the Democrats could whip up? Seriously, I thought moral character was still taken into consideration...
The GOP/RNC are not going down without a real political/electoral dog fight. The "Masters of Misinformation" know that they cannot let go anymore Senate seats to the Democrats. They are mentally/politically committed to their cultural policy of hate, distrust, and division for America. They need to keep their ecconomic philosophy of "greed for thyself" intact. That is fact!
Al Frankenstien ? United States Senator? What a joke!He mocks our country. If that fool wins ,Minnesota will be a joke!!
So Coleman wins. What's hard about that?
Besides, who wants a comedian in politics?
We've already had that with Slick Willie.
they'll just keep counting until the democrat can produce enough fraudulent votes to win. that's how democrats roll.
Coleman is acting like such a wiener. I sure hope Franken wins for this reason alone. If Coleman is trying to twist the facts now..., just think what he will do in the Senate. Go Al!
You guys should have re-elected Jesse. Wake up.
The fact that Franken is remotely close makes me wonder about the people of Minnesota!!!
"The statement cited the canvassing board’s rejection of Franken’s attempts to stop the recount as grounds for the official recognition of Coleman’s win as he is currently ahead."

Uhm, this is incorrect. The only one trying, and failing, to stop the recount in Minnesota was Norm Coleman.
Coleman needs to be put out with the rest of the trash!
Thank god (and Minnesota legislators) for a paper trail that can actually be followed.  At least they have something physical to argue over.  As a Canuck I can only watch the American elections vicariously but watch I do as it is much more entertaining than ours (started after, finished first, not much changed, oh yeah... a paper trail, my guy won by 61 votes).  I'm cheering for Al; Coleman's ads seemed designed to convince people that the butcher running for town council was no different than the entrails he used to make sausage.  Good luck Minnesota!
Memo to Norm:  You might win,but quit declaring vitory.  I think you're not what we need in Minnesota, but I'll have to accept it if we were dumb enough as an electorate to give you another term.
Lawless liberals will again count and recount the votes until they manage to "find" a box of ballots that were misplaced, just as they did in WA State in 2004. It is simply not possible for Democrats to win on a level playing field so they resort to their typical lies, sleaze and illegal acts.

But it's OK, folks, because after all Americans want "CHANGE".

LOL, simply cannot wait til this comes crashing down on them in about 18 months. This Muslim Administration will make Bill Clinton's scandal ridden presidency look good by comparison.
Coleman knows darn well that when all votes are counted, he'll wind up on the losing side. Why is it that rethugs are always trying to toss votes into the garbage?  What - 2000 and 2004 wasn't enough for ya?  Gotta try to steal another one?
Coleman has not been named the winner of anything.  And as for the canvass finding more votes for Franken than for Coleman, it only makes sense.  Votes will tend to be misplaced in situations where there are more votes to deal with.  Those will be from more urban areas, e.g. areas that would more likely support Al Franken than Norm Coleman.  There has been no indication of any wrongdoing by the Franken campaign and it is highly disingenuous of the Republican Party to make statements to that effect.  In addition, why are they only concerned about election fraud now?  Where were they in Florida 2000 or Ohio 2004?
This Coleman person sounds like a dirty politician, making false statements about Franken.  We don't need more liars in our government.  Hope Coleman loses with the recount.  That would be very good news.
This should be fun...  I wonder how long the recount will be going on?  I guess we will find out some time before Obama is sworn in I think.
