The transition: Hillary and Holder

Posted: Wednesday, November 19, 2008 9:29 AM by Domenico Montanaro

The New York Times writes, “Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton of New York has reservations about accepting an appointment as secretary of state in the Obama administration, an adviser to Mrs. Clinton who is familiar with her thinking said on Tuesday. The adviser described Mrs. Clinton as flattered by President-elect Barack Obama’s interest but said she was agonizing over the decision. Mrs. Clinton likes being her own boss and is reluctant to give up the independence that comes with that, said the adviser, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the process was at a delicate stage.”

“‘If you are secretary of state you work for the president,’ the adviser said in an e-mail response to questions from The New York Times. ‘If you are a senator, you work for yourself and the people that elected you.’ It was unclear if Mrs. Clinton’s stated hesitation was part of a bargaining tactic as the Obama team weighs whether to appoint her secretary of state, a genuine moment of indecision or, perhaps, a signal that she was preparing to withdraw from consideration.”

Politico adds, “Press reports that portray Clinton as willing to accept the job -- once the Obama transition team vets Bill Clinton’s philanthropic and business ventures -- are inaccurate, one Clinton insider told Politico. ‘A lot of the speculation and reporting is out ahead of the facts here,’ said the person, who requested anonymity. ‘She is still weighing this, independent of President Clinton's work.’”

The Wall Street Journal: “Former President Bill Clinton has offered to submit future charitable and business activities to strict ethics reviews if his wife, New York Sen. Hillary Clinton, were nominated as secretary of state, according to Democrats familiar with the deliberations. He has also agreed for the first time to disclose many of the previous donors to his efforts.”

David Broder is against Clinton becoming secretary of state. "What Obama needs in the person running the State Department is a diplomat who will carry out his foreign policy. He does not need someone who will tell him how to approach the world or be his mentor in international relations. One of the principal reasons he was elected was that, relying on his instincts, he came to the correct conclusion that war with Iraq was not in America's interest. He was more right about that than most of us in Washington, including Hillary Clinton."

Some fun trivia via the New York Observer: "The office of secretary of the state was once the preeminent steppingstone to the presidency, but that was back in the early days of the republic. Starting with Thomas Jefferson in 1789, five future presidents -- James Madison, James Monroe, John Quincy Adams and Martin Van Buren were the others -- ran the State Department (actually, the Foreign Affairs Department, as it was then known) in its first 40 years of existence. But in the 180 years or so since then, just one person -- the forgettable James Buchanan -- parlayed the position into the nation’s top job."

And the last former secretary of state to even RUN for president: Al Haig in 1988.

"If Hillary Rodham Clinton becomes Barack Obama’s secretary of state, she could wipe away her lingering $7.6 million presidential campaign debt," Politico's Vogel reports. "As the nation’s top diplomat, she would be barred by tradition and ethics rules from partisan political activity, including raising cash to pay off debt from her unsuccessful bid for the Democratic presidential nomination. And that could give her a powerful case to make to the Federal Election Commission about why it should forgive her campaign debt through a settlement process not unlike filing for bankruptcy." (The irony of Clinton going to State is that it would prevent Mark Penn from getting paid…)

“Eric H. Holder Jr., a former Justice Department official who was President-elect Barack Obama's campaign co-chairman, is the leading candidate to serve as the next U.S. attorney general, according to Democratic sources familiar with the choice,” the Washington Post writes. “Holder, 57, was offered the job late last week and tentatively accepted it, sources said. The Obama team intends to make the nomination official if he receives at least moderate support from Republican lawmakers and completes the vetting process, the sources said. Intermediaries began to reach out to Republicans on the Senate Judiciary Committee last week, and the vetting pace accelerated yesterday.”

“Sources close to the process said Holder was a ‘near-certainty’ to become the first African American nominated to head the Justice Department, which plays a leading role in enforcing civil rights laws. Officials in the Obama transition office said no final decision has been reached.”

The New York Times: “As a top adviser to Mr. Obama, he has long been considered the front-runner for the job of attorney general because of his extensive record as a prosecutor and a judge and a well-honed reputation inside Washington. Mr. Obama’s advisers appear to have overcome concerns that Mr. Holder’s involvement in a presidential pardon scandal as President Bill Clinton left office in 2001 might cloud his nomination for the job.”

The Chicago Tribune adds, “Holder is another former Clinton Administration official so he's sure to draw complaints from those who say that Obama's choices of members of the last Democratic administration don't exactly look like ‘change we can believe in.’”

Politico has what it calls "the story of how Rahm got rich." "Emanuel’s career as an investment banker was short but, oh, so sweet. Emanuel left the Clinton White House in 1998 as a senior adviser on a government salary. By the time he won election to the House in 2002, he had earned an astonishing $16 million."

If Nebraska Republican Chuck Hagel is in talks with Obama about a possible Administration appointment, his lips are sealed.

(The irony of Clinton going to State is that it would prevent Mark Penn from getting paid…)
******************************************************

HA!  Time for some come-uppins...

http://thepajamapundit.com/
All during his campaign, Obama kept telling us about "Turning the Page". Little did we know that he meant "Turning the Page Backwards". We're about back at the table of contents Barack.
Get the Clintons out of Obama's administration.
Obama is nuts to let them in.
How many times will Hillary let men control her life?
Hillary has done a good job as a senator.  This one is tricky.  I agree with the Hillary is her own boss in that position.  Can't see her with Obama as a boss.  Then again, we hope he is doing whats right for our country.  Maybe he knows better than me whats right, ya think!!
I really do not think that Hillary wants this. I hope its is Bill Richardson.
Some DA in South Texas has secured indictments against Dick Cheney, and Gonzo.  The DA was not reelected to office, so I guess this is his last reportedly crazy stance.

Maybe Holder can take it further since the Texas Supreme Court is ALL Repukes which guarantees that nothing will happen, warranted or not.

Too Funny!!
David Broder -> One of the principal reasons he was elected was that, relying on his instincts, he came to the correct conclusion that war with Iraq was not in America's interest. He was more right about that than most of us in Washington, including Hillary Clinton."

Not in our best interest Mr. Broder? Price of a barrel of oil will be at $40 as soon as today, after a brief spike in prices due more to oil speculators then lack of supplies. You'd think oil would be that cheap if had left a mad man like Saddam run free in the middle east? Last thing I heard about Saddam, he was just hanging around somewhere.
Chuck Todd gave some excellent insight into the Hillary pick last night on Countdown and this morning.  I too wonder why Hillary would want the Secretary of State position as Todd pointed out that that would kind of stop her from raising money and campaigning for 2016.  Also surprised that Bill Clinton would want his public foundation clipped financially as he'll now be under a big microscope for his fundraising.  Still she'd make a great Secretary of State, so much better than the clueless prissy poser we now have screwing our diplomacy up.

Hey - "Living within my means and feeling good about it"  Thanks for watching my back yesterday!  I love your moniker as it is my motto for life as well.  No crushing debts to slow me down financially and I go old school and save up for big ticket items.

Hey - "Probably won't clear the liberal filter"  You weren't only wrong about the fairness of the FR reader comment posters but also about Fannie and Freddie causing this whole financial meltdown.  They only generated 15% of the bad loans so they are not the sole problem.  The problem was "Criminal" Bush not doing any oversight of the existing regulations on the books.  The problem didn't happen on Clinton's watch, it happened on "Criminal" Bush's watch because he didn't want to regulate the junk bond crowd.  A junk bond by any other name is still junk!
Has anyone considered that Sen. Clinton doesn't plan another run for the Presidency?  She has said that publicly.

From Fox News on October 14, 2008:

"Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton has told Fox News that she is not likely to mount a second campaign for President of the United States in the future.  When asked what the chances of that possibility might be on a scale of 1 to 10, she replied:

"Probably close to zero.  There's an old saying: Bloom where you're planted."

"Close to zero" is pretty definitive.
It's a shame if Hillary turns down the job. She's smarter than anybody in the Bush administration. Heck, she's smarter than all of them put together. Then again, so is a decaying tree trunk.
Senator Clinton is a politition and not an administrator, which is a major part of State. She should stay in the senate.
>>>The New York Times writes, “Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton of New York has reservations about accepting an appointment as secretary of state in the Obama administration...
==========
If she turns it down on her own, the Hillarybots should have absolutely nothing to say about it since Obama did make an offer.  Personally, I think she'd be ok, but my first choice would be Bill Richardson.

>>>The Chicago Tribune adds, “[Eric] Holder is another former Clinton Administration official so he's sure to draw complaints from those who say that Obama's choices of members of the last Democratic administration don't exactly look like ‘change we can believe in.’”
==========
PLEASE, GET THE F--K OVER IT!  They were the last Democratic administration in office, and we did have 8 years of prosperity under the Clintons (can you say BUDGET SURPLUS).  Who do you think he should hire?  Maybe 'Joe the Plumber' would be more to your liking.  His objective should be to GET THE BEST PEOPLE, not just the people who supported him (we just got over 8 years of that one, remember).

62 Days Until Inauguration Day!

I find it interesting that Hillary doesn't want to report to Barack! Guess she wasn't fully on board now, was she? Apparently she STILL doesn't get it that her husband is the noose around her neck, not Obama.
Hillary knows that if she's away, Bill will play. SoS would have her gone a lot and Ridin' Dirty BJ Bill would be hooking up with the flavor of the day. A lot to think about on her part.
I say if Hillary has any reservations about the position, look at one of several other good choices for Sec of State. PE Obama can only ask. I like Hillary and hope she will be happy in what ever she does. There is no telling what awaits her, especially if she would remove that 200 lb tumor hanging on her back.
marty
So Obama keeps the Bill & Hill Show afloat.
Unbelievable. That's called shooting yourself in the foot.
wow some people are really dumb

what Obama needs in a SOS is somebody who walks in and has respect before they sit down at the table...

who knows enough about what they are talking about and who has similar (not the exact same) POV as he does...

there is no one who brings the "weight" better than Clinton...and is better matched with Obama...period

this ain't jr. high morons...  Hillary and barack are older smarter and more level than any of this gossip pundits like to write about...

time to grow up gang...Clinton at SOS and Obama as pres ...are perfect right now.
I hope that whoever is picked for Homeland Securtity is a civil libertarian.

What about NSA? Now that is a scary place in need of a sheriff to keep them honest or at least constitutional.
The first part of this article was ""Never" said better! It is wonderful that self serving greed came first before the vote of the people.

Your Washington self serving paper hanger rules! Your seeing the truth that we the people are second place and the stock market is reflecting how horrible they the paper hanger have destroyed the infrastructure of this nation, Even at this moment we see our auto industry being dismantled. Just who runs this nation, a handful of Washington self serving paper hangers? ""CHANGE" WISHFUL THINKING LOL!
David Broder is allowed to spew his rants about what he thinks should happen.Last I heard is that your party is on the way out.Obama has said from the beginning that he would bring in the best people, all party issues aside.Who advised LiL,Bush,Darth Chaney, how has that worked out?The rightwing nuts like Broder,Kristol,Rush, all have the answers. The problem is they don't understand the question.
I would not like to see Hillary as Secty of State.  I would like to see John Kerry in the position.  I think he would make a super Secty and he needs to be rewarded for his loyalty.  Whenever Obama needed to be defended on his lack of foriegn policy experience it was Kerry who got on the conference calls and did it.   Hillary should concentrate on Healthcare.
David Broder obviously does not know Obama. Broder (in his criticism of Hillary) states that Obama does not need a Secretary of State who will be telling him how to view the world or how to manage foreign policy. What Broder does not understand is that Obama intends to be in control and that his Secretary of State will be expected to carry out his views and decisions regarding the world stage. There will be no doubts whatsoever about that. Hillary knows this and if she can live with it then let her take on the role. If she knows she can't live with it then she will turn the job down. Simple as that.
If Clinton is really hedging on becoming SOS, she shouldn't accept it. This job requires total dedication and allegiance.
I cannot believe that Bambi Cardenas is being mentioned for Sec. of Ed.  She is currently under investigation for plagiarizing her dissertation.  And last year she paid the univeristy money after an audit showed she misused university resources.  This sounds like Bambi is trying to get UT System to stop their investigation.
I was thinking the other day about Sen. Chuck Hagel and if he would be considered in Pres.-elect Obama's administration. I think he would be an excellent choice for any one of the positions he's being considered for. I hope Sen. Hagle seriously considers and accepts a positon as he is non-partisan and would work with Pres.-elect Obama to find common ground.

Hillary Clinton should divorce Hound Dog Bill and then she would truly be independent. If I were Obama, I wouldn't want Bill anywhere around!

But if she didn't leave him over Monica, she probably won't leave him at all.
All during his campaign, Obama kept telling us about "Turning the Page". Little did we know that he meant "Turning the Page Backwards". We're about back at the table of contents Barack.
T. Press
****************************************************
Hey T - so what administration should he pull from to get people with experience - Reagan - nah too old; Bush - nah to crooked - Clinton - wow anyone else out there??  Sorry NOPE
What everyone is missing, I think, is that another Big Dog stepped into the Senate chamber yesterday and that is the old Lion, Ted Kennedy. .

He first spanked Hillary by not letting her get away with claiming the Health Issue as her own, but instead said that he would get the Health bill passed himself.

Then, after HER people made sure that the SoS was leaked and whispered to the press, Kennedy again has stepped in to squash her chances of being SoS by putting her on HIS committee, therefore taking THE SoS off the table for Obama. He is covering Obama's back on this. You now see Hillary not quite sure she wants the job after all !! Interesting isn't it?

Teddy probably has just one more thing to get done before he goes and he is going to pass a Health bill come hell or high water. That will be his legacy forever and he will not let Hillary and Bill mess with Obama.

So, that, boys and girls, is where Hillary is going. Back to the senate working for Uncle Ted.

The press needs to let go of the Hill/Bill story and the Clinton drama, Part: 123456789...10 and beyond.
I couldn't for the life of me understand why the Democrats nominated Obama, now it is becoming very clear.

They are all still in love with Bill Clinton!

An objective look at Obama begs to wonder why the Democtrats picked a no-body who only has one outstanding fact of record, his obedience to the Party with his vote.

As Obama picks person after person from the Clinton Administration to build "his" Administration it is clear that Obama truly is just a Party Puppet!  Still obedient, that's a good BOY...

So much for fresh new CHANGE...
Since Holder is now going to be the U.S Attorney General. Hillary should stay in the Senate, and work with Kennedy on health care. The GOP/RNC will need to be put in their place, and McCain is going to need little mental reminders. I hope Holder has completely understood what a foolish mistake it was to pardon Rich. I really hope that Holder will hold-up the law, and enforce it fairly. Obama is taking a big risk here, and I hope it pays off for our nation to move forward. That is fact!
Even if it doen't work out for Hillary as SOS, at least Obama made the offer, and that says a lot for Obama.  It shows that he holds no ill will against her.  I personally think she would be better off in the Senate.
I have a lot of respect for Hillary Clinton.  Obama was definitely my preference for Dem candidate, but I could have voted for Hillary without question.  In terms of her being Sec of State, I wonder if that is best utilizing her skills.  She would make a great Majority Leader and could contintue her political career.  She would also be excellent on the Cabinet on some of our domestic issues especially health care.  There would be no one stronger than Hillary in addressing the problems with our health care system.  I would hate to lose her abilities and passion on that serious issue.

There are other candidates that would do a good job as Sec of State, but no one could compete with Hillary as Health Sec.

Regarding the comment about rewarding Kerry for his loyalty, I think it time to put aside the good ol' boy rewarding system.  Obama is about bringing in the best and brightest.  If Kerry is best for Sec of State, then that's great.  But I hate to think Obama would consider giving someone this important position as a reward.
I do believe that Hillary will not run for President again.  However, I have seen more than one story say she might just have her eye on being Governor of New York.  I think that would be a much better fit for her than being Obama's S.O.S.  Now, if Obama wanted to make her a Supreme Court Justice, that would be another story....
I think Holder sounds like a great AG.  The fact that he's been in the justice department, he's been a prosecutor, he brings experience and knowledge.  We need someone to clean up the department.  I do hope he chills a bit on filling prisons with minor marijuana offenders, but I think he'd have lots of other more critical issues to address.

It sounds like he was the fall guy regarding the Rich pardon.  It's seldom that the guys at the top take any of the blame when it was them that had the power.

Plagerism!?! We have a VP-Elect that got thrown out of law school for plagery. You think that's going to stop someone from heading up education?

Barack Obama's motto: If someone doesn't meet your standards, then change your standards.
The very fact that Obama is considering Hillary Clinton for Secretary of State makes my blood boil.  I supported him from the very beginning, both with donations and volunteered time on his campaign.  I did not want Hillary anywhere near the White House ever again.  How quickly people forget the lies she told during the campaign and the dirt she threw at Obama that helped the McCain campaign. I am hoping she turns the nomination down, if it has indeed been offered to her.  I am a 61-year-old, white, college-educated woman and I would like to see a female succeed - just not this particular female.  Hillary Clinton cannot be trusted.
Boy! am I ever losing respect for Hillary Clinton. What does she want??? If it is to be the center of attention, she is doing that well. She obviously has difficulty making decisions she can stick with, as shown in her presidential campaign and now with her Secretary-of-State possibility. I'm an Independent who was for Obama the entire way, but I was thinking HRC could be o.k. as S-O-S. NOT anymore! Get rid of the Clintons for GOOD.
I agree with "jawillie" who says:

PLEASE, GET OVER IT!

Using tested & seasoned, INTELLIGENT and savvy folks to implement the change that prez elect Obama envisions for the people/nation, is a message that I approve of.  The man's principle gift is "leadership" (a spiritual priciple by the way).  A good leader has what it takes to lead people, regardless of their individual personalities and demeanors, towards successfully accomplishiong stated goals.  In each of my managerial experiences, I welcomed dissenting opinions.  My primary criteria was that what was brought to the table should be objective and beneficial towards accomplishing all departmental, divisional and company goals.  The day a group of people assemble who are so like minded that no true exchange of ideas come forth, is the day that mediocrity or even worse, inadequacy will be all we can expect as an outcome.  We've witnessed this for the past 8 years.

I applaud the individual who is secure enough, humble enough & modest enough to welcome the opinions of others, and even more importantly, to acknowledge and value the opinions of others.  It's a mighty egocentric leader who shuns valuable input simply because of who the person is, what their party affiliation is, etc.
Why was Bush 41's business dealings with Bin Laden's brother never an issue?
@ Reno WeirNot in our best interest Mr. Broder? Price of a barrel of oil will be at $40 as soon as today, after a brief spike in prices due more to oil speculators then lack of supplies. You'd think oil would be that cheap if had left a mad man like Saddam run free in the middle east?

________________

You think half a million innocent Iraqui civilians would have been alive today, and millions more in their own country instead of huddled in refugee camps? But hey, what's that compared to cheap oil that another sovereign country owned!
Does anyone think that Gov. Bill Richardson will be a better fit for SoS?  If not, do you think there is a role in Obama's administration for him?
