Obama won ... Salt Lake, UT

Posted: Wednesday, November 19, 2008 1:55 PM by Mark Murray

From NBC's Tom Lea and Mark Murray
The Salt Lake Tribune: "Updated election results released Tuesday show that Salt Lake County voters favored Barack Obama over John McCain -- but just barely -- marking the first time in decades that a Democratic presidential hopeful won the state's most populous county. With the addition of more than 29,000 provisional and late-arriving absentee ballots, President-elect Obama scored a come-from-behind victory over McCain. The county's official election canvass didn't change the outcome in any other race."

More: "The final result gave Obama a 296-vote victory, which equates to less than one-tenth of 1 percent... The updated election results have no impact on who won the presidency or even on Utah's five Electoral College votes, which easily went to McCain. But Obama's Salt Lake County win sure mean a lot to the leaders of the Utah Democratic Party, who watched President Bush win the last two elections by a margin of more than 20 percentage points in the county. 'It is a huge step for us,' said party Chairman Wayne Holland."

Wow! This is a nice surprise for Obama. Remember when "Puppet Palin" was ripping on community organizers? Well what the GOP/RNC does not understand yet. Is that the organization of people for a certain cause is how democracy works. I wonder if the "Dizzy Diva" has a reading tutor yet?? That is fact!
That is a real testament to the Obama campaign's positive message and well-oiled machine of a campaign. I speak for ALL Republicans when I say I am ready to support my new commander-in-chief.
Wow, I know Salt Lake is less than half Mormon, but the suburbs aren't. Did Mormons vote for Obama in significant numbers? I'm so proud!
Those people are nuts. I visited Salt Lake once. What a dump. Even if I took a dump all over the ground, the place couldn't have been any worse.
That is a solid increase that shows the trends across the board as the country flees the hard right wing.  Nicely done Team Democrat.
if Obama won more votes then it's only right that he
gets all the electoral votes too. Why didn't he get the electoral votes?
WOOHOO!!!! I am thrilled Obama won SL county! We live here and all we saw were Obama stickers so I was floored when it showed McCain won.
'It is a huge step for us,' said party Chairman Wayne Holland."

Nice. Just farther for Wayne to fall next time.

And, just gave another $100 to the Mormons so they can fight to keep the Prop 8 vote the law in CA.
Indeed, it is a really huge step for us, since President Bush won the last two elections by a margin of more than 20 % points to less than one-tenth of 1 %. It’s showing that Oregon wants to change away from partisan-ship and divisiveness coming from President elect Obama's vision  .

If the Big Three want loans, why don't they go to the bank like everyone else and fill out an application for one. Banks have lots of money; We The People gave them billions just a few weeks ago.

Pockets,
Seriously, you should know banks are less than willingly to lending due the credit stalemate; therefore; the bankruptcy option is inhumane to hard working people whose lives are tied to a supposition.
The final result gave Obama a 296-vote victory, which equates to less than one-tenth of 1 percent . .

If the Republicans vote counters in Utah are anything like the Democrats in Minnesota, they'd have the lead narrowed to nothing by 4pm today.
Way to go Mormons. In a few more decades, the LDS might allow minorities!

Utah, like most states, counts all the votes in the state before they give out electoral votes. Obama lost the state, he just won a county. And let me guess, you're one of the Obama voters that believed the Republicans controlled both houses of congress.
"just gave another $100 to the Mormons so they can fight to keep the Prop 8 vote the law in CA. --Steve Justice"

bypass the middle men and give it straight to the devil.
Wow, that's a shocker. SLC, who would have thought it?
The West is ripe ground for the Democrats.  I will say this again -- anyone but McCain on the other side, and Obama wins Arizona as well.  Let the rethugs have the south -- its shrinking electoral vote won't be a factor.

In the meantime, let's kick-start this place.  Time for everyone to go back to work.
Correction: In my original post I meant UTAH wants to change away from partisan-ship and divisiveness coming from President elect Obama's vision.

I'm so hopeful that within my lifetime (I'm almost 50) the faction/sect of religous fundamentalists will completely lose their voice in government and politics.  There is separation of church and state for a reason.  I'm a christian, but that does not make my beliefs right for you or any body else... they are simply my beliefs.

This article gives me reason to continue that hope
Salt Lake is a tiny light of progress surrounded by a very darkly red state.  This isn't really a surprise to anyone I know here.  In fact, had Bush won this city, I would have been genuinely surprised.  IN reality, I only a couple planned to vote Republican in this cycle (disclosure -- I am not Mormon, and most of the Republicans are hiding in that community). My suburban neighborhood was saturated, absolutely saturated, with Obama signs.

Morover, realize that Salt Lake City proper has elected Liberal Democrats as Mayors for twenty some odd years now.  In fact, our last, Rocky Anderson, is known world wide as being one of Bush's most vocal critics.
Full Moon:
I am POSITIVE Salt Lake City was just beautiful the minute you left town.  Ugliness is one of those things that people like you tend to spread around.
Glad your gone.
I love my city, Salt Lake City.
With Salt Lake City out of the running, what was the most populous city (county?) that Sen. McCain won?
As a mormon in Utah, I voted for Obama. Do not just look at SLC. Obama won two counties in Utah. This is a big thing - shows how well people responded to his message. Also note, other counties were much closer than in previous years.
yes, a whiff of sanity here in old Salt Lake amid the droves of follow the republican party and the church anywhere lemmings.

Nonetheless, some actual practical reality here is still in danger of being swamped by continuing choppy waves of bedrock denial...   global warming and population growth being big examples.
I am not surprised.  It was truly a "Change Election."
Wow, that ANY county in Utah went to a Dem is a seismic shift in Utah politics! WAY TO GO OBAMA!
YES WE DID!!
Well SLC as a former Utahian and Morman, You elected Obama. What's that old saying? "Be careful of what you wish for, you might just get it.
