Posted: Wednesday, November 19, 2008 4:10 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC's Domenico Montanaro
David Axelrod officially heads to the White House as Senior Advisor, the Obama transition team announced. In addition to the widely expected step, the transition also announced that Greg Craig will serve as White House counsel -- another move confirmed previously by NBC News.

Additionally, Lisa Brown will serve as Staff Secretary and Chris Lu will serve as Cabinet Secretary.

Here is part of the release with Obama's quote and brief bios:
"I am pleased to announce these new additions to our team, and I'll be relying on their broad and diverse experience in the months ahead as we work to strengthen our economy, reform Washington, and meet the great challenges of our time," said President-elect Barack Obama.

David Axelrod, Senior Advisor to the President
David Axelrod served as President-elect Obama’s Chief Strategist during the presidential campaign, and led Obama’s 2004 Senate campaign. A native of New York City, Axelrod graduated from the University of Chicago and spent eight years as a reporter for the Chicago Tribune, where he covered national, state and local politics and became the youngest political writer and columnist in the paper’s history. Leaving journalism in 1984, Axelrod managed Paul Simon’s upset victory over incumbent U.S. Senator Charles Percy of Illinois. In 1985, he founded Axelrod & Associates, a political consulting firm known today as AKP&D Message and Media. Axelrod has worked for leading Democrats across the country, including Senators Hillary Clinton, Chris Dodd, and Herb Kohl, as well as Governor Tom Vilsack of Iowa, Governor Deval Patrick of Massachusetts, Congressman Rahm Emanuel of Illinois, and Mayor Richard Daley of Chicago, along with mayors of big cities across the country. He is married to Susan Axelrod, president and founder of Citizens United for Research in Epilepsy (CURE). They have three grown children.

Lisa Brown, Staff Secretary
Lisa Brown is the Executive Director of the American Constitution Society for Law and Policy. Lisa was Counsel to Vice President Gore from September 1999 through January 2001, and Deputy Counsel from April 1997 through August 1999. In addition to advising the Vice President on legal issues, Lisa served on the Executive Board of the President's Committee for Employment of People with Disabilities and worked closely with the Vice President's Domestic Policy Office on a variety of legislative initiatives. Lisa was an Attorney Advisor in the Office of Legal Counsel at the Department of Justice from June 1996 until April 1997. Prior to her government service, Lisa was a Partner in the Washington, D.C. law firm Shea & Gardner. Ms. Brown graduated Magna Cum Laude from Princeton University with a B.A. in Political Economy in 1982. She received her law degree with Honors from the University of Chicago Law School in 1986.

Greg Craig, White House Counsel
Gregory B. Craig served under President Bill Clinton as Assistant to the President and Special Counsel. Prior to his appointment to that post he served for two years as Director of Policy Planning under Secretary of State Madeleine Albright. Craig also worked for Senator Edward M. Kennedy as Senior Advisor on Defense, Foreign Policy and National Security from 1984-1988. In addition to his service in government, Craig brings to the White House a wealth of experience in civil and criminal litigation.

Chris Lu, Cabinet Secretary
Christopher P. Lu has worked for President-elect Obama in a number of roles over the past four years. He was Legislative Director and Acting Chief of Staff in Obama’s Senate office, as well as a policy advisor during the presidential campaign. Chris is now the Executive Director of the Obama-Biden Transition Project, where he manages the day-to-day operations of the transition. From 1997 to 2005, he was Deputy Chief Counsel to Rep. Henry A. Waxman on the Democratic staff of the House Government Reform Committee (now the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee). A graduate of Princeton University and Harvard Law School, Chris was a litigation attorney at Sidley Austin in Washington, D.C. (1992-1997), after a clerkship with the Honorable Robert E. Cowen of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit (1991-1992).

David Axelrod = political genius.
I LOVE OUR NEXT PRESIDENT!!!!!!!
Barack Obama, President of the United States.

I can't wait.

Especially with the people he continues to surround himself with - professional, smart, down to earth, hard working, they want to bring our family members home from Iraq. The bottom line - they care about the direction of our country.

There is much to be thankful for next week. A lot of blood sweat & tears went into this election.

Now look what we've got. We should all be proud. Very proud.

We still need to help out Michigan. They voted Democrat for a specific reason. They knew their executives & the GOP were going to hang them out to dry. Which is what's happening.

Thanks Mitt. You'll never change. When are you going to move out of MA?
Great!!!  I think Axelrod and Obama are the ones who, perhaps in combination, have this very effective, instinctive sense of timing and planning.  Perhaps I'm doing Plouffe a disservice -- but not, I'm very glad that our country will have the benefit of that that particular chemistry and pacing that mark both Obama and Axelrod.  Great news!
Washington is now the new Chicago. People aren't very familiar with Chicago politics, but they will be. Think kingdoms and dictatorships where the legislative branch is nothing but a rubber stamp to the executive branch.
From what I have read these seem like good choices, and should add real competence to the White House. That America has not seen in 8 years! The individuals selected provide intelligence, strong organizational skills, and will help keep things on task. This is a solid start in moving our nation forward. I do not see any problems here at all.
Obama just keeps moving forward, in the right direction.  Axelrod with him in the White House!  I'm secretly hoping, the way Newsweek did, that someone is documenting the goings on behind the scenes, to be released as a book.  The Newsweek articles were eye opening and made me even more thrilled that Obama won the election.  I do have a question though, where is David Pflough?

Excellent pick.  This is what's been missing for the past 8 years, smart people in positions where they can do the most good.  Not just sycophants with their hands out looking for cush-jobs.  I'm actually looking forward to when this administration takes office.  We're in for an interesting 4 (hopefully 8) years.

In other news, the DOW dropped 400+ points to below 8k for the first time in 5 years.  We should brace for more whining and ranting from the McCain sore-losers about an "Obama Recession".

62 Days Until Inauguration Day!

So what you're saying is, we're going to have a repeat of the Republican Congress from 2000-2006?
Maybe Axelrod can figure out a way to prop up the markets.
Looks like Obama is stuck in the mud even before he starts. The mans soul has been sold ten times over. More political hacks, more lobbyists, more Clinton idiots who did such a fine job that we were in a recession when Clinton got done with all his pardons, and Osama had his plan in place to attack the US. Obama will be sure to enrich his friends at the expensive on his enemies. It is the Democratic way.
This is great news.  I loved the way Dave Ax ran the O's campaign.  Just great.  Smart, smart people.  What a concept.

Hey, Chuck!
If Chicago politics mean hire intelligent, educated (Princeton/Harvard), caring, involved, forward-thinking people, then bring on Chicago!!!
I am so happy!  Finally we are seeing a light in the end of the tunnel after 8 years of nightmare.  Obama our President!  Great
David Axelrod may not be a part President elect Obama’s but he will change, despite the doubts many people have. Not only has the David Axelrod (ax man) been instrumental as chief Strategist in reverberating President elect Obama’s vision of but he actually help deliver it. This is the tenor and approach to governing so many voters had found engaging in Obama's candidacy. Notwithstanding, challenges of the economic crisis, 2 wars, and the threat of A-Qaeda making (or a doctored tape of Bush& war profiteers its attempt to denigrate and raise the specter of fear again).

If this isn’t an indication of President elect Obama’s attempt to bring change; then everyone who thinks we are revisiting should be patient. Change does come easily.  President elect Obama has his classy First Lady in waiting and his sweet little daughters. His house is in order.  Based upon that, which, I assume, took time and patience should come about because US (we the people) sought this change.

President elect Obama told us it wouldn’t be easy. So let’s support his judgment and leadership. President elect Obama’ s courage should be applauded for putting his life on the line and an inheritance of these huge challenges!

Oh my David Axelrod worked for Senator Clinton... Another Clintonite...

Yes, that is meant to be sarcastic... I think this is a perfect example of why that argument is ridiculous... There is a difference between people that at one point or another worked for the Clintons and people that were and in some cases still are in the Clinton's inner circle... The Clinton's were in the White House for 8 years, a lot of great people worked for them but some now support Obama...
David Axelrod = political genius.
