The transition: Napolitano at DHS?

Posted: Thursday, November 20, 2008 9:26 AM by Mark Murray

The big news of the day is the speculation that Janet Napolitano has been tapped to be Obama's Homeland Security secretary. The pick of Napolitano indicates that immigration may have been Obama's primary concern in making his decision on this post. Napolitano taking the gig means she'll be out of the 2010 Arizona Senate speculation, and probably clears the way for McCain to have a relatively easy re-election.

In order to make things a tad smoother for Tom Daschle's HHS confirmation, his lobbyist wife is giving up her lobbying career

"Associates of Senator Hillary Clinton said yesterday she is weighing whether to leave Congress and become secretary of state in the Obama administration, a job they say she believes is hers if she wants it," the AP reports. "Transition officials for President-elect Barack Obama said that other candidates have been vetted for the job as well, but that Clinton has emerged as the leading contender. The vetting of the New York senator's husband, former president Bill Clinton, has been particularly intense, the officials said, adding that he has offered several concessions to help his wife get the post…. Hoping to ease concerns about possible conflicts of interest, Bill Clinton has shifted a longstanding policy and agreed to publicly disclose the names of all donors who have given more than $250 to his presidential library and foundation.”

Politico's Allen and Thrush: "Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-N.Y.) and former president Bill Clinton have cleared away the final hurdles to a formal offer of secretary of State from President-elect Obama, and officials say the two former foes could appear together for a smiling announcement next week. As a key part of satisfying Obama's vetting team, former President Bill Clinton is open to giving up foreign sources of income if his wife becomes secretary of state, according to a close friend."

Indeed, Bloomberg News reports that Bill Clinton has sent the Obama vetters a list of more than 200,000 donors to the Clinton library and foundation. "The 200,000 or so names comprise the universe of donors to Clinton's presidential library and foundation. This is separate from the Clinton Global Initiative, which operates under the aegis of the foundation but does not directly take money from the donors.”

But… "President-elect Barack Obama's camp, well practiced in keeping secrets, is increasingly frustrated by a steady stream of leaks that insiders suspect come from confidants of Hillary Clinton, the Daily News has learned. Just as ex-President Bill Clinton pledged Wednesday to prove there are no new skeletons in his closet that could derail his wife's chances of becoming secretary of state, top Obama sources suggested loose-lipped Clintonistas abide by their rules: If caught leaking, you will pay the price. 'They have been strategic about what they leak each day,' said an Obama insider, who acknowledged word around the transition office in Chicago is that Obama himself is miffed at the leaks. 'This [leaking] isn't coming out of our shop,' added another irked Obama official."

Politico’s Ben Smith makes the argument against Clinton. "But the sum of those parts seems something less than the whole explanation for Obama's first great presidential gamble: his move toward giving his former adversary, whose judgment on foreign policy he criticized relentlessly, by offering her the most important Cabinet position in his administration. Neither Holbrooke, Kerry nor Richardson would bring Clinton's downsides: Her towering, volcanic husband; her own ambitions; and the endless speculation about the two of them."

The Miami Herald did the "Obama taps Elian Gonzales attorneys" story in response to the speculation that Eric Holder will be Attorney General and that Greg Craig will be Obama's White House counsel. "President-elect Obama has not made the appointments official, but both the Republican National Committee and some Cuban-American leaders in Miami are already signaling their disapproval. 'This is a clear sign that the Obama administration is diametrically opposed to the concerns and views of the Cuban-American community,' said state Rep. David Rivera of Miami, who helped organize the June protest. ‘It is a blatant and disrespectful slap in the face.'”

The Chicago Tribune on David Axelrod going to the White House: “After two years as the chief architect of Obama's campaign strategy, Axelrod will work to implement the ideas and policies he helped sell to American voters. ‘I just want to help him be successful,’ Axelrod said Wednesday, between meetings with Obama in Chicago. ‘Part of that is making sure that we're communicating the right way with the American people.’”

Napolitano is a good pick.  She brings border-state experience and I feel that immigration has long-been overlooked on the Homeland Security docket.

If this is true - Napolitano will be excellent at Homeland Security. She's smart, she's legally brilliant and she has great common sense and a drive to make this work.  As a border governor, not only has she rode rough-shod over a gun-totin' wild western state - she is compassionate and knows what is important - kids first, and people. She will do an excellent job - proven by having been elected twice, a Democrat in a red state, now purple. Only downside is that we will lose her as one of the best governors this state has had.
Obama made another solid pick to fill DHS. Napolitano has a good record on immigration issues, and has improved the border situation in her state. Obama will need her experience, and knowledge on security issues concerning our nation. That is fact!
This has to be the first blunder of Obama circus. The Gov is about the last person you would want at Homeland Sec.
The AZ border is a funnel for Illegals. Phoenix is a haven for Illegals. Local Sheriff ""JOE A"" should be the Homeland Sec. Now there's a real Law Man!! CHECK HIS RECORD!!!!

excuse me but where are the positions for those that have been riding with him for the past two years?  Bill Richardson, Claire McCaskill, and others? I won't be satisfied until I see either one or both of them appointed to something. Come on Barack!!
You better hope that this AZ Gov is NOT Appointed!!! AZ has been invaded by Illegals and local law enforcment hands were tied by the idiot Gov. Phoenix would be a battlefield if not for the local Sheriff. The Gov enforced nothing, It was the Sheriff!! He should be the Sec of Homeland security!!!
One hand washes the other..sounds like real change we can count on..
and let the protection special interest racket begin...
AZ loss is Obama's gain. If she declines the position she could anialate McCain in a senate race which would be great for the state of AZ as McCain does nothing for this state.
AZ Gov has failed! Her record to stop Illegals ""That's a Joke"" Fact being, She pulled the funding from the Local Sheriff and tied his hands ""Because he was enforcing the law to Arrest Illegals. You take your life in your hands after dark in Phoenix. Murder, drive by shootings, gangs all by Illegals,, County lock up is at 40% Illegals.

The Gov is a over blown Blow Hard. She gets a F- for stopping Illegals!!!  This would be a Major Blunder!!!

Not to sure about this one.  Not that she wouldn't be good (I think she'll do well), I just don't like the road being cleared for McCain to get another term as Senator of AZ.

Why do I get the feeling that Bill wants this for Hillary more than Hillary does?  Maybe he has a few interns he wants to "recruit" (wink, wink).

Are we n ot sick of the Clinton drama train? Make a decision you witch and get on with it.
Good for Gov. Napolitano- she's a smart, talented individual who is actually a credit to female governors- unlike someone else we know.  The only negative is that John McCain has no obstacle to a 2010 re-election.

Oh, well, I'll just have to take comfort in the fact that Gov. Napolitano will (hopefully) be kicking Joe Lieberman around on Homeland Security issues.  A lot.
I am sure Sheriff. "Joe A" has a great record on the ground in law enforcement. Politically, on the national level?? My bet is that he does not have one to speak of. For political positions in Washington. An individual needs to think of the whole nation, and not just one state. That is fact!
Napolitano has a solid record as a problem solver rather than as an ideologue, yet another sign that the Obama administration marks a dramatic turn from the politics of the last few years.  The appointees announced so far are an incredibly solid group, just what we need to start turning things around.
My head is spinning. Qualified people filling top positions? Whatever happened to putting the likes of Michael Brown, former horse show organizer, in charge of FEMA? Gonzalez, the President's personal lawyer, as Attoney General? Not to mention all those fourth tier law school graduates stocking the Justice Department. I suppose Obama is going to replace them with graduates from top law schools. My God, good sense is breaking out all over!
Is he joking? Napolitano (violent cities where illegals run free), Pritzker, all the Clinton retreads. All these selections are disappointing so far....can you say "paybacks for political support"?
Perhaps one of the biggest concerns about Hillary becoming Sec of State is that the people she surrounds herself with are not very good with leaks.  The last thing we need is for the world to know everything that goes on with the Sec of State because her people can't keep their traps shut!

If I were Obama, I'd certainly be taking this into consideration...

FACT (Sent Thursday, November 20, 2008 9:42 AM)

Fact (or should I say lack thereof), why would you NOT want a governor of a border state to head up Homeland Security.  A Governor of a border state has a much better understanding of illegal immigration issues (which tie into Homeland Security issues) because they deal with it daily.
Who would you want to head up Homeland Security, the Governor of Utah, South Dakota, or West Virginia?  I bet your pick would be Sarah Palin (sorry to bring that name up again).
You don't list your name.  You don't list your city or state.  For all we know, you could live in Alaska, the capital of illegal Canadian immigration, where hundreds of thousands of Canadians cross the border into Alaska a year (yes, I'm being sarcastic).
California, Texas, and New Mexico also have border issues.  Florida deals with them coming on their shores.  Illegals will cross our borders no matter who is governor of any of those states (and others).
By the way, who is "JOE A"?  Since you don't have the decency to list his entire name, we have no way of verifying your claim (how convenient for your argument).  Local sheriff could mean he's the local sheriff of a Phoenix suburb or nearby city.
If you're going to complain, at least give us facts we can research.  This blogger is the 3rd one today who made general comments without facts to back up their statement, and the 20th or so from naysayers of Obama who do not have the courage to list their name or the city and state you are from (which is what this website asks you to do).  You are nothing but a coward and will continue to be a coward until you can say "my name is Joe, Sue (or whatever your name is), from whatever city in whatever state, and I am the one proud to say I post by the pen name FACT".
Until then, we all see you for what you are, a coward.
she also has emergency management experience in addition to the other skills that have been pointed out. that would allow an excellent workmanship understanding of what the incoming fema director must deal with.

this also adds diversity to mr. obama's cabinet as he promised. electorate representation with qualified selections is wise and is needed.

to the immigration issue. just applying law enforcement is not enough in itself. also, illegal immigration is hard to stop without federal leadership and funding.

sheriff joe made good strides, but he also practiced some skeptical actions that one must ask were they fair and humane.

we must secure our borders for security reasons, but us being a nation of immigrants must find a way to allow those who are here to become citizens. imagine what that taxable income would do for the states within the country and the federal budget (hello). think of the amount of income that is not taxed that would help against the deficit and help with services needed by the american people.

we also don't want to break up families. despite what some want to believe all latino immigrants aren't bad people. they want a better life for their family and themself. that is what makes america great.

we will never be able to send 12 milion people out of the country. secondly, we couldn't afford it. thirdly, these are good people that want a chance at what we have already. a better life.

let's find a path fot citizenship for them. bring them out of the shadows so they can be a part of the american citizenry without hiding.

the only non-immigrant is the american indian. we must remember that. our ancestors were allowed to come here to start a better life. that is why we are now here.

let us not discriminate against a people who want to work and make a life that is better than poverty.

every white person is not a criminal. every black person is not a criminal. every american indian is not a criminal. every asian is not a criminal. every latino/hispanic is not a criminal.

letus stop finding those reasons that holds america back and stop us from being great.

"Neither Holbrooke, Kerry nor Richardson would bring Clinton's downsides: Her towering, volcanic husband; her own ambitions; and the endless speculation about the two of them."

Exactly.  The Clinton camp is leaking this because the Clintons are self-aggrandizing and self-righteous.  Richardson would be a much better Sec of State, FAR less drama.

Anybody who doesn't see that the Clintons will be in the way and always fighting about how the president wants things done hasn't been paying attention.

A little true humility on the part of the Clintons would go a long way.
