Huckabee's book tour

Posted: Thursday, November 20, 2008 12:14 PM by Mark Murray

From NBC's Cherelle Kantey
ARLINGTON, Va. -- Greeting a few smiling supporters at a Costco warehouse here, former (and maybe future) presidential candidate Mike Huckabee made his first stop on his tour promoting his new book, “Do the Right Thing: Inside the Movement That's Bringing Common Sense Back to America” book tour.

Huckabee gleefully offered a hearty handshake while autographing his campaign memoir.
“The central message is that the Republican Party has a great future, if we get back to being the party of principle, clarity and conviction,” he said. “And we’re going to do that.”

The book, released yesterday, has stirred some controversy in the media over its apparent swipes at his former rival for the GOP nomination, Mitt Romney. In several instances in the book, Huckabee charged Romney for being out of touch with voters and for flip-flopping on certain issues. In an example from a debate where Romney was asked about how to help the economy, Huckabee writes that Romney was more focused on reciting lines about his business expertise than on helping the average American.

“I stood there in stunned silence when he went into his well-prepared, programmed answer about how we needed to invest more in high-yield stocks,” he writes. “That moment was perhaps the single most revealing of what was wrong with our party. We had people leading us who knew the country club, but not Sam’s Club.”

Huckabee reassured attendees of the book signing that there’s more to the book than the rehashing of an old beef with Romney. “It’s a very, very small part of the book,” he said. “It’s really not about the past or about the other people in the party. It’s about the future of the party, [which] starts with being true, authentic conservatives with clarity in our convictions.”

Anna Higgins, former grassroots volunteer for the Huckabee campaign, said she thought the comments about Romney were dead on. “I think Mitt Romney is a flip-flopper,” she said. “It just makes me nervous some of the things he’s changed his mind on.”

Another Huckabee supporter said he the comments were no big deal. “I’m not listening to the pre-read flap," said Sanford Horn. “The Mitt Romney flap is much ado about nothing and way for media to stir up trouble amongst Republican figures who are well-known -- to divide the party.”

Huckabee spent the hour-long book signing by hugging his supporters, even greeting a former staff member who said he was proud to see Mike out in the public eye again.

“He’s my friend, former boss, and I am very proud of him in so many ways,” said Brian Summers. He commented on how Huckabee waited to greet everyone who wanted an autographed copy of the book.

“He stayed here until everybody was done. [It] was the same way on the campaign trail. We never left anybody in line who did not get a chance to meet him.”

As the Atlantic's Marc Ambinder writes, Huckabee today takes his book-signing tour to Iowa, which he won back in January.

who cares? not a topic worth discussion.
"Huckster" Huckabee and Common Sense are mutually exclusive concepts.  This religious tyrant would destroy our Constitution by dumbing it down to false biblical substandards, thus destroying our secular democracy.  A book for small minded people that deserves to be burned rather than read.

"Bush promised the same 'getting beyond the bickering' and 'post-partisanship' that Obama promises.  They ALL do that.  NOBODY succeeds.  But we're all expected to show Obama the same courtesy that Bush asked for, and no one ever gave him, because Democrats were so busy whining and crying about Al Gore losing.  Now liberals want a different set of rules for their Messiah."  Liberalism is a disease

Hey "Liberalism is a disease" - "Tyrant" Bush never bothered to practice what he preached as far as bipartisanship.  It was all his way or the highway and we've seen how incompetent his way was.  Conservatism is the Disease that has wrecked our secular democracy and economy.  Obama is not our Messiah, that's just demeaning conservative garbage.  He is however far more brilliant than any repugnant one you kowtow to.

"Eric, Salinas CA:
I want Obama to wait on Treasury, because this is going to be a tricky one. He has to get this right or there will be hell to pay, so I am ok with the wait at this point. There is no "rush" on this pick in my mind. Vet and get it right the first time, because our economy is in bad shape."  Richard

Richard - That short post you responded to wasn't my post though someone used my name for it.  I agree with you that there's no big rush to appoint the Treasury Secretary as it's most important to get that posting correct.  I favor one of the "Freakanomic" guys like Goolsby.  I definitely don't want any more Wall Street criminals like Paulson giving his Wall Street cronies even more breaks than they already have gotten from the current goofball.
Huck has a show on FIXED...ugh!!! I would like to observe his show but I have Banned FIXED NEWS forever.
Hey huck - when the US is looking for a Preacher in Chief, we'll call you.  Don't hold your breath on that call for commander in chief.  The far right you pander too will never carry the election for you - and the rest of the country leans center left.  I hear you might be popular in a country like Iran though...take your schtick on the road brother.
Now this is a joke America! The GOP?RNC has not done the right thing for 8 years. The individuals that really have no clue what this means are as follows. "Puppet Palin," "Insane McCain," "Darth Rove," "Backwards Bush," "Chump Change Cheney," and "Stealing Stevens." The list goes on, and on in the "raunchy ranks" of the GOP/RNC. Huckabee will go on tour with his best buddy in the whole world Chuck Norris. I wonder if "Chucky" will try to sell his "Jungle Gym" along with the Huckabee book tour. Now that is scary America!

Creationism?

"Abstinance only"?

Compassionate conservatism?

Wrapping yourself in a flag and holding a Bible?
No, No we want a GOP without substance, stay in your place Huckabee 2012 is Sarah's
As for books, I'm looking forward to buying & reading Jonathan Alter's book - First 100 Days of FDR. I'm picking it up this weekend. Also, Richard Wolffe's and Chuck Todd's books on the election should be terrific when they're written & released.

Huckabee? I'll pass. Wasn't it he who said something the other day about because gays didn't get their skulls bashed in, that it shouldn't be considered civil rights that they're aiming for?

Really out to lunch, this Huckabee.

I miss seeing John Dean on tv. He played such a vital role in bringing to light all the sins of the Bush Administration. I don't think he's been on since the election. I met him at a bookstore here in Boston and had a nice talk with him. A really lovely man.
Huckabee/Palin 2000never!
Huckabee has more sense than most republicans. He also has some awareness of how people on Main street live.  Those are good qualities to have as a politician. Unfortunately most republicans are more into money, power, tearing down their opponent, assuming that Joe the plumber will vote for them, even when it is not in the plumber's best economic interest to vote Republican.

The best unsolicited advise I could give Huckabee is run as fast as you can away from Fox, put your Christianity in your back pocket, and don't plan on running in 2012 as Obama will beat you...badly.  Give that honor to silly Sarah so she can fail...again.
Another paper hanger seeking to vent his revenge of his own failure. He like the Clinton's, just a blow hard who can't and won't dry up and blow away.
Huckabee is a very interesting character. I feel he has much the same appeal as Obama - the integrity, the genuineness, the appeal to the ordinary person. I may even read his book. Is there any chance he would be an Eisenhower republican? That might get back the republican vote.

Romney, on the other hand, in spite of having shown some interesting stripes as a governor with his universal health care system in Massachusetts, strikes me as being a more of a panderer than a pragmatist.

Amy in 2016!
Yeah, Huckabee, the former "pastor" who made a joke about someone aiming a gun at Obama so he had to "dive for the floor".

Huckabee the jokester.  Do us all a favor and keep writing books that a few people will buy and stay out of politics.
Huckabee, another self-righteous wolf in sheeps clothing. When the day comes that this country decides it needs or wants a theocracy then he and Palin would be a perfect fit, but until then he can keep his hands off our Constitution!
Andrea Mitchell talking to Carly Fiorina about Huckabee and the auto bailout is nonsense.  Wasn't she dismissed from McCains campaign?  She trashed HP, fired a lot of people, and walked away a multi-millionaire. Now she is trying to show compassion for the workers in Detroit?   She almost choked when she said "right now Barack Obama is our President". Please talk to people who have some credibility.
Ron Indiana: '...Huckabee has more sense than most republicans. He also has some awareness of how people on Main street live.  Those are good qualities to have as a politician...'

Faith, Mounds View, MN: '...Huckabee is a very interesting character. I feel he has much the same appeal as Obama - the integrity, the genuineness, the appeal to the ordinary person...'

AGREED !
Huckabee seems like a decent politician
I know I wouldn't vote for him, but he seems like a good guy

I also admired Ron Paul's foreign policy
His views on Foreign Policy were better than Obama's

There's a little good in everything, even (gasp) the Republican Party
Huckabee has a great show on Fox. Even has liberals of all kinds on. Huck's easy to get along with and gets along with everybody. Not bad on the bass guitar either. Olbermann could learn from Mike Huckabee. Rachel Maddow too.
Huckabee is as far removed from Rev. Wright as anyone can be.

Huchabee is the good, Wright the bad AND the ugly.
So why is he signing books at Barnes and Noble in Cedar Rapids tonight, and not the Sams Club?
I like Mike Huckabee. He's better as a preacher than a president I think. He just a good guy.
I LOVE HUCKABEE, I LOVE THE FAIRTAX, HUCKABEE 2012 !!!!
Separation of church and state ~ Huck can't do this.
I still believe with the Implosion of the Economy around September 15th, at the very height of the Presidential Campaign, this race would have been a much tighter race with Mitt Romney in it.  I guess it just wasn't meant to be.  The GOP gambled that an Old Maverick could beat a younger, more vibrant Change Candidate, and they lost.  Romney, flip flop or not, looked the part, carried himself well, and whether you agree with him or not, he was better versed on the Economy.
Huckabee is nothing but a wolf in sheep's clothing. More right wing nut cases than you can shake a stick at. He would appeal to the far right wing, but he won't appeal to the center or left wing....ever. He's also got that creepy grin that most Republicans seem to have. Should have stuck to preaching. You can lead THOSE sheep!

---------------------------------------------------
That's a good point.  Even though Fox News gets trashed a lot, on all of their shows they are least willing to present both viewpoints.  I've seen plenty of guests on Oreilly that he disagrees with, but at least he will give them an audience.  The trouble with Olbermann and Maddow's shows is they only bring people on that agree with them, and they refuse to entertain any other lines of thought than 'democrats good, republicans bad.'  Even if you agree with that, it's hardly news.
Hey GOP, stop with ths suspense. You know you want to change your name to American taliban, so just go ahead and do it.
I know that the future of the Republican Party is Mike Huckabee. He has the total breath and delpt of where our Party is going, Make no mistake he is a true conservative.
As a loyal Republican Afro-American who has voted in this party since I was 18yrs I'am sure in 2012 all americans will join with me and "Do The Right Thing"

Mike Huckabee 2012
