Out with the old?

In the waning hours of the 110th Congress, shakeups on both sides of the Capitol dome this morning marked defeats for two of the Hill's most long-serving members.

In the House, Rep. John Dingell, a member of Congress since 1955 who has served as the chairman or ranking member of the powerful Energy and Commerce Committee for 28 years, was defeated for another term as chair by California Rep. Henry Waxman.  Waxman has himself served since 1975, ten fewer terms than Dingell, whose tenure in the House is the longest in the body's history.

On the other side of the rotunda, Sen. Ted Stevens, at 40 years the longest-serving Republican in Senate history, said goodbye on the Senate floor today.  Stevens was defeated in his reelection bid by Democrat Mark Begich, the mayor of Anchorage who was six years old when Stevens was first appointed to his Senate seat.

The Senate's oldest member, Robert Byrd, came into the chamber during Stevens' speech and later rose to deliver  --  with characteristic flourish -- eulogistic praise for his dear friend Stevens. He shouted "huzzahs" to punctuate the tributes of his colleagues they spoke in praise of their departing Alaska senator. Now in frail health, Byrd has recently stepped aside as chairman of the powerful Senate Appropriations committee.

(It's also worth noting that today is not only a tough day for the Capitol's old guard, but for one state's Democratic delegation in particular. Michigan lawmakers saw not only the leadership defeat of Dingell, one of the anchors of the state's delegation, but also the apparent stalling of an emergency bailout plan for the Detroit-based auto industry.)

What is this country coming to when a felon can't get re-elected?

Wasn't so long ago that any war criminal could get re-elected in the GOP.
New ideas take young individuals to move our nation forward. I do not want the halls of Capitol Hill smelling like moth balls, and prunes anymore. Watching elderly individuals, with outdated ideas, waddling down the halls of Capitol Hill, is just disturbing. If the Capitol Hill cafeteria starts using plastic spoons, and it is only serving "jello at noon." Then we know it is time to move forward America!
The tide of change is coming to Washington. It is well overdue.
The tide of change is coming to Washington. It is well overdue.
He's not only a convicted criminal. so whats the big deal, Congress is loaded with more of his kind. Too bad there aren't more whistle blowers in clean out these corrupt slime!

Hey, Jefferson needs to be shown the door! Just another paper hanger bending and twisting the law!!!!
Au revoir, Mr Stevens.  Don't let the door hit you in the butt on your way out!
It's time for all the old Palace Guards to step aside and let those who have non-partisan, non-progressive leaders do the will of thee people. Congratulations Rep. Henry Waxman.

I hope Alaska’s Uncle Ted still isn’t feeling blue.
There's no defense to how much Congress has helped destroy our infrastructure, point  ""Hagel defends the off shore policies and car makers, but when it comes to American car makers ""HE"" he wants to pull the plug!! Now there's a real Washington self serving useless paper hanger!!
this change is good
High time for limits.Time spent in congress should have limits. These guys that hold important chairs have served long enough. It's like if Y.A.Title was still playing today, how well do ya think he would do with todays players? ?Time takes it's toll, and younger minds and new ideas will bring better Governing.
Democracy is cuumbersome and sluggish, but it is still the best system of government. Let's hope that the trend toward meaningful change continues. We need more in congress to step up and do the people's business, not feather their own nests!

We all need to get behind the new administration and do what we are asked to do. Shared sacrefice is the mantra for '09. We can save the shopping sprees til we are more solvent!
Good riddance to Stevens.  hopefully his next stop is Federal prison.
Dingell & Stevens.  The phrase is, "Don't let the door hit ya' where the good Lord splitya'"  This is also a tough day for Big Oil.  All they have to console themselves with is the $40 billion in profits they earned.  Last Quarter.
The old would be anything related to the Clintons and their adnministration. What the hell is Obama doing? He's inviting chaos into his administration, as if he doesn't have enough to deal with already.
..... and in with FDR's New Deal, Obama version.

Roosevelt's New Deal extended the Great Depression another 7 years. Obama hasn't said or done anything
about what will hit him when GWB is out. He wants the masses to to hear him tell them there is nothing to fear, just like FDR did.

Hey, it's just dawning on me. We are gonna have a copycat president-elect.
"UNCLE TED" NEEDS TO FOLLOW ESKIMO CULTURE AND GO NAKED ONTO THAT ICE FLOE......GOODBYE
"Come senators, congressmen
Please heed the call
Don't stand in the doorway
Don't block up the hall
For he that gets hurt
Will be he who has stalled
There's a battle outside
And it is ragin'.
It'll soon shake your windows
And rattle your walls
For the times they are a-changin'."

28 years is too long for him to hold the chairmanship - especially with such poor results.  Dingle didn't deserve to keep his seat.  It's time for forward thinking people to take control.
I'm all for term limits in Congress. If it's good enough for the Preisdent, then why not Congress? Some of these old foggies have never held a real job!
For those of you who think all things "old" (and if you're in your 20's that's a pretty big category), the least y'all can do is show some respect for people's service. I agree that Ted Stevens is a convicted felon, but what do you have against Dingell?
Teddy Stevens the convicted crook can advise silly sarah on her presidential aspirations since she won't be getting his senate seat
Man, these people need to get over themselves.

They're "Public Servants" for Christ's Sake (and the public's)
Sarah must be devastated.  "God" there in His wisdom progressed the open door to slam shut but there being other opportunities to progress her family and Alaska may, in His hands, open another, any other door a crack and cause Sarah to plow on through there for this great nation of energy for the lower 48 and oh, I'm no dictator about Senator Stevens and the will of the people. Amen.
A tranfusion of new legislators assures that the Senate and House don't become stale and stagnate.  Those that have served the American people for years should be commended; however, there comes a time when they should retire with grace, enjoy their golden years, and put their faith in the hands of the junior legislators whose ideas and insights are like a breath of fresh air.

As for the sinking auto industry, there is plenty of blame to go around, although the buck stops at the top of the ladder in the laps of the antiquated philosophies and general business practices of the CEO's. Who is actually to blame is water over the bridge; what really counts now is keeping the wheels of the auto industry rolling, patching the potholes, and putting the roadblocks aside in order to assure that the USA does not fall into an even deeper pit due to the loss of millions of auto and feeder industry jobs. If we can bail out the "white collar suits & ties" on Wall Street, along with squandering tillions of dollars on a unjustifiable/preempted war in Irag and the rebuilding of this foreign country, than we can sure focus on helping our economy recover by assisting the auto industry in regaining solvency through some sort of bridge loan to tide them over while they come up with a new plan of action.

People know things are getting "old" on Capitol Hill. When there is a special parking lot for wheel chairs, and walkers. When the Capitol needs to add more ramps, and all of the food in the Capitol's cafeteria needs to be boiled. When a person starts hearing elderly representatives yelling such things as. "Where are my denture!" Who stole my 1900's World's Fair Spoon!" "Did Stevens steal my wallet again!" Then America we know it is time to move on!
Actually, I would throw all the baby boomers into the same group as Stevens and Dingell.  They all need to go.  Certainly, boomers have shown the same self-indulgant narcissistic tendancies as those who have held on for so long. Collectively they think of themselves as 15 years younger than they really are. Sorry pals, your bodies are sagging and your minds lagging. It aint pretty, your old. Its time to get that pine box adjacent to your bed, step in and die...soon please.
