Obama reaches out to Scowcroft

From NBC's Andrea Mitchell
Democratic sources say that former Bush 41 National Security Adviser Brent Scowcroft is one of the people whom Barack Obama has been consulting about how to craft his national security team. Knowledgeable sources say Obama reached out to Scowcroft two days ago to discuss defense and national security issues.

Scowcroft, who first served as President Ford's national security adviser, was an early and vocal critic of the Iraq war -- starting in August 2002. That criticism cost the retired Air Force General his position as head of President Bush's Foreign Intelligence Advisory Board.

Scowcroft is very close to Defense Secretary Bob Gates, who is considered a possible holdover for the cabinet.

Another key adviser to the president-elect on defense matters -- Sen. Jack Reed -- is a leading member of the Armed Services Committee who traveled with Obama to Iraq and Afghanistan. Reed is also very close to Gates.

Sources say that with or without Gates in the mix, a possible national security adviser in the new Administration is Gen Jim Jones, retired Marine Commandant and former NATO Supreme Commander.

Another is former Clinton Secretary of the Navy Richard Danzig, a key Obama adviser during the campaign. Also in the mix: Former Assistant Secretary of State and close Obama adviser Susan Rice, as well as former Clinton National Secretary Council and State Department official Jim Steinberg, most recently head of the LBJ Foreign Policy school at the University of Texas.

What about Hillary? Some Obama advisers have "cooled" to the idea of her being secretary of state, because of all the Bill Clinton complications. Other top Democrats say the prospect is still alive.

If Clinton thought she had a chance to have a larger role on health care if she remains in the Senate, she got the message yesterday that the prospect is unlikely. When Sen. Ted Kennedy held his first meeting of key subcommittee chairs to discuss health care legislation, Clinton was not invited.

Although Kennedy offered Clinton the leadership of a health-care task force this week, aides say it does not have a budget or a staff.

I like your idea; but let’s save the cash and do web conferencing.  (Don’t let McCain propose it, though – or all hell will break loose!)

Because when the Repubs do it, it’s called a ‘reach around’!
I simply cannot be more impressed with the way the PE Obama is handling this entire selection process.  He truly is bringing in the best and the brightest.  He has no problem with party lines or if they worked for Clinton or Bush Sr.  He is gathering information, opinions, even advice and making sure that he gets this right.  It takes a very confident person to be willing to listen to others - even those you may not agree with.  Look at Bush.  He locked himself away and made bad decisions based on what we'll never know.

PE Obama is giving us every confidence that he will make the right choices.  Absolutely an amazing man.
I was in Washinton the day after Clinton had his 1 million dollar inauguration. Money wasted. Now Obama will undoubtedly top it. Nobody has wasted more money than Barack Obama.
Question: Is Biden up to being vice-president of the United States? Can he handle it like he didn't handle Palin?
Can Andrea Mitchell make a report without mentioning Hillary Clinton anymore?  What happened to the consummate, objective journalist.  Alright already with the HRC news, Andrea.
'...Some Obama advisers have "cooled" to the idea of her being secretary of state, because of all the Bill Clinton complications....'

THANK GOD !!

A little Hillary goes a long way
Christopher Hitchens on CNN was spot on last night on Hillary's 'qualifites'

Let's find SOMEBODY ELSE !!

richardson, Kerry, who was the woman advisor who had to be replaced for calling Hillary a 'monster' ?

Find a place for Chuck Hagel...
Intelligence head ? Why not ?

Find a PROGRESSIVE Treasury Secretary who is AGAINST De-Regulation and 'Free' (sic) Trade

THAT'S IMPORTANT
I like Susan Rice; I first thought President Elect Obama would select her for SoS; after seeing her on talk shows. She’s smart and articulate; furthermore, she’s not related to Condi Rice or share Condi Rice’s views.
Whether or not Hillary becomes SoS; still remains to be seen. One thing for sure, No Drama President Elect Obama certainly has quite a drama going on now with the Clintons. Folks, they’re the King and Queen of Drama. Relax; Enjoy the show, whatever she gets/accepts it will be significant. After all, she deserves something significant she got 18+ million votes; despite that she ran a horrendous, defunct, campaign.
Reaching out to Scowcroft is excellenct; his Iraqi opposition is in lock step with President Elect Obama.
Ooooh, I'm surprised that Sen. Kennedy isn't interested in Sen. Clinton's opinions regarding healthcare.  I thought the very opposite was reported a few days ago, hmmmmm.  When you have dealings with the Clintons there's always drama, and it is virtually impossible to keep it simple.  If she doesn't accept the SOS position, I look for her to run again in 2012.

You must have missed the Rachel show w/ David Frumm (Fromm?)
Sorry Andrea but it's all a smokescreen. It tears my heart out but the only one really being 'reached out to" is Bill Clinton.
"What about Hillary? Some Obama advisers have "cooled" to the idea of her being secretary of state, because of all the Bill Clinton complications. Other top Democrats say the prospect is still alive."
You can't blame them because it is a complete sell out. This whole Secretary of State thing stinks of a backroom deal when Hillary and Bill came to Florida with Obama. Complications indeed. The only reason we don't have a new scandal on our hands is because Bill Clinton is afraid of Todd Palin.
OK, Rush Screwbaugh, and your 'ditto-heads' (whatever the hell those are....)- time to start tearing down Brent.
On ya mark, get set.....
People are panicking about this not being inclusive but Obama will move on the right track-I believe we will be impressed with his assignments.
This is a very wise choice on Obama's part.  I'm guessing Scowcroft probably doesn't want to do the National Security Adviser thing again, especially when one takes his age into account, but I'd love to see him do it again.  He's one of the high priests of the realist foreign policy school of thought, which seems to match up with Obama's own point of view.  And God knows, we need a realist foreign and defense policy right now - one under which the U.S. picks and chooses its fights, and in the meantime, works to balance burgeoning powers like Russia, China, and India.
Mr. Matthews, please make Pat B. SHUT UP.  He totally hijacked you and your show today!

God, his voice makes me sick...once his arms/hands start going up and down, it's all over for anyone else to have a chance.

Get Rid of PAT BUCHANAN!

If I want a history lesson, I won't look for him!
6 steps back with Bush. 4 steps forward with Obama. Net result? Still going backwards. Looks like going forward.
Those who whine about Obama being a third Clinton Administration should note that Skowcroft was in the Bush41 Administration. Obama seems to be seeking the finest minds available no matter what their party affiliation happens to be.

It is good to see Obama reaching out for advice from a wide range of political sources. This is what it means to be Presidential, and to get the most qualified people brought in. The question is not so much, who these individuals are, but what do they know to make are nation stronger. That is fact! As for Hillary. Who knows where this political soap opera is going? At this point she should just stay in the Senate, and work on health care policy. Time to move forward America!
For all those who did not think Obama was experienced enough, he seems to be getting the people that are. This is what any true leader does, surrounds him, herself with talented and knowledgeable people. Go Mr. President 1000% behind you!!!!!!
Obama should hire every whistleblower and federal employee fired by the Bush administration for being right.
Obama is missing a real chance here in searching for the chairperson for his national security team.  Simply have some of his Chicago mafia dig up Neville Chamberlain; his pathetic remains will be found resting on its left side in a cowardly fetal position.
Ok, I've had enough! I donated money I didn't have, I voted for change and I'm not getting any!! I am an "average" American. I am scared to death about what is going on with the economy, Iraq, health care and all I am reading is Clinton this, Clinton that. I'm sick of it. I'm sick of it all. Give me change I can believe in AGAIN.
So far so good.....Obama is doing his homework by reaching out to all sides he will have a complete picture on which to formulate policy.....if this is any indication of what type of president he is going to be.....well ya gotta love it
I truly think that we Presiden-elect Obama, talking to all persons that will help in our foreign policy is important.  If we as Americans will give our new Preident time to complete his cabinet and get to work it would be wonderful.  Remember it took our present President Bush, eight years to make a complete mess of not only our economy, but also how the world views us.  Let give the new man some time to turn this ship around and make America, a top country again.
Ya gotta love the way PresElect Obama is doing his homework and thoughtfully getting input from smart people who know what they're talking about.  Those who can add insight and ideas to his own, and at time, counter and challege his ideas.

The mess that PresElect Obama is inheiriting is subtantial to say the least and will take a long thoughtful process (perhaps decades) to work out.  At best, Obama can get us started toward a solution.  And I truly think he will.  He's starting off on the right foot at least....reaching out and listening.
I pray that Obama picks:

1. Susan Rice  NSA    She's Awesome
2. Hagel       SOD

Scowcroft is actually an excellent choice.  So you know Bob Gates is going to be a stay over.  Why isn't Colin Powell in the mix of things? And if Obama really wants to get things crazy with Washington and the media he would go ahead and give Claire McCaskill the job.  I swear she is the most staunch supporter of Obama!  Maybe we need a new face in that position.  I mean if we could make Sarah Palin a VP candidate why not McCaskill Secretary of State?
Neville Chamberlain to lead Obama's national security team.
To whom it may concern: I wanna no y is it win we have a republican in the house that they always seem 2 care about FOREIGN OIL, then raise up the gas prices? Then I would like to no y when we have a Democrat in the house it alway's seem they care about health care issues? Are these tactics to get the Americans mind off of the main issues goin on here? When will we grow up?O yeah Barrack Obama I'm prayin for change & it really begins individually first then collectively.
We cannot have it both ways, America. We are in deep, deep trouble in almost every aspect of governance both nationally and internationally. We -twice to my astonishment - turned our executive branch over to a trained monkey surrounded by an incompetent, greedy, goon squad that has left the presidency as a trashed out crack house for the rich and powerful. We cannot turn it over to a crew of inexperienced, however well intentioned, rookies simply because Obama promised change. Obama is a brilliant leader who will not be pushed around by political toadies like Bush is. He will operate with a firm hand and consistent vision. Let the Fixed News crowd crow and mock about how this is four more years of Clinton. It won't be. But we are spinning out of control and it will take some strong, experienced hands on deck to right this ship of state. I certainly think we a have lots to worry about...our country hasn't seen this confluence of horrors anytime in it's history. But Obama is everything Bush wasn't: intelligent, creative, clever, responsible, and aware of the implications of the promises he's made. I'll worry just like you will, but not about Barack Obama's promise to bring change to the White House. I worry that everything is so SNAFU'ed that he will spend four years putting our fires and never get a chance to be the president we elected him to be. If that happens, it will be our fault for electing the worst president in history, and thinking he hadn't made enough mistakes and abused enough privilege, we elected him again, thanks to the empty headed blow torches on the right who have the uncanny ability to terrify millions of people into voting against their own best interests. We should be ashamed of ourselves for being weak, gullible and lazy in 2000, and twice as much so in 2004.
Dear President Elect Obama:

If I wanted to continue the Clinton soap opera, I would have voted for Hillary.  I did not want any more Clinton drama but rather I wanted to have a clear headed progressive in the White House so I voted for you.  If Hillary and Bill are creating so much drama at the mere prospect of her becoming Secretary of State, imagine what it will be like if she actually holds the post.

Richard from California
This is one sign of welcoming in Republicans.  Keeping Gates on and talking to Scowscroft.  It makes sense to me if Obama is going to keep the plan of taking people from all sides.

Clinton shouldn't be Sec of State.  Leave her in the Senate.  Take Richardson who knows this stuff.  He will also placate some of the Latino critics that question where the Latinos are in the administration.
A new kind of politics that lacked 28 years...glad to see this new politics...the main reason I had voted for Obama!

Keep it up my BO!
Whoever can give him good advice makes it all that much better. GOP, Dem, I or whatever.
Time to get work done. ENOUGH with the partisan junk.

Hill will be names Sos today or tomorrow
I LIKE IT
As a small, almost monthly financial supporter of Sen. Obama's since February, I am very disappointed to say the least in the selection of Sen. Clinton.  We have enough drama in the economy and the world without adding the always problematic Clintons to the scene.
I have no doubt President-Elect Obama will suroound himself with the best and the brighest. Everyone who keeps complaining about his Administration picks should remember that we elected him because we felt he had the best judgment. Now you need tobe patient. Those who complain about some being retreads need to think that these folks wont be reporting to Bill Clinton, they will be reporting to Obama; there's a difference. Before you jump ship, give the man a chance. He hasn't even been sworn in yet. I'm about as liberal as you get and his picks are interesting at least and I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt. I STILL believe he the best choice to move this country forward.
Where is the "Change" the country was sold?  All you hear and read is a re-tread of Clintonistas.  Change?  That's all that will be left in our retirement accounts after the wealth is spread around.
I am still waiting to see who the energy / global warming team will be. A strong clean-energy plan to  to create jobs and fight the downward economic spiral is job one.
Scowcroft is brilliant.  We need some brilliant people advising Obama in these strange times.

On picking former people in the Clinton Administration....who are the other "smart people" in the room?  If Obama picked an unknown for any of these top positions, the MSM would have a field day and you would never hear the end of it from the Republicans.
