*** So is It done? Call us skeptical, but why is it hard to believe that the news that Obama and Clinton have worked everything out and the appointment will take place just after Thanksgiving is something that will hold? There's going to be more pauses and skeptical stories about this happening between now and whenever the State announcement happens. It's the only way, right? Just consider this passage in today’s New York Times: “One friend said Mrs. Clinton decided late Wednesday to say no, reasoning that she would have more freedom in the Senate. By midday Thursday, the friend said, she was ‘back in the indecisive column again.’ By the end of the day, another associate said she could accept by Friday.”

Video: NBC Deputy Political Director Mark Murray offer his first read on why Hillary Clinton appears ready to leave the Senate for the State Department.

*** Leak soup: Speaking of the Clinton-Obama drama, everyone is now noting all the transition leaks and how frustrating they must be for the usually disciplined Obama folks. Today’s Washington Post has a good piece on why they’re happening -- and where they’re coming from. “‘There is nothing they can do about it -- vetting and FBI background checks require a lot of calls, and that leads to leaks,’ explained Steve Elmendorf, a longtime aide to former House minority leader Richard A. Gephardt (D-Mo.) and now a lobbyist in Washington. And unlike in a campaign, there is now simply more information to disseminate and more outlets chasing the ever-elusive scoop. ‘It's the era of the Internet; what do you expect?’ joked a former Clinton White House senior adviser who is not involved in the transition process.”

*** Dingell gets buried: Only in Congress’ antiquated seniority system is change defined by a member of Congress elected in '74 replacing a member of Congress elected in '55. But that’s exactly what happened yesterday when Henry Waxman ousted fellow Democrat John Dingell from chairing the House Energy and Commerce Committee. Of course, the big issue for Dingell may have been the anger at the auto industry, and if that vote had taken place at another point in the year, Dingell might have had a better chance of surviving. But taking place just one day after the auto CEOs disastrous Hill testimony, Dingell had a steeper hill to climb to survive. By the way, the six-year long campaign by Pelosi to unseat Dingell (it began in '02 when she supported Dingell's primary opponent) has finally come to fruition. Let there be no doubt about the power of the speaker.

*** All vacancies: With the likely nominations of Napolitano to Homeland Security and Clinton to State, that means we’re going to have some fun replacement appointments to watch in Arizona (GOV) and New York (SEN) -- in addition to the replacements that already have to happen in Illinois (SEN) and Delaware (SEN) for Obama’s and Biden’s seats. And if Kathleen Sebelius seems headed to either Labor or Energy, as we reported yesterday, then that will mean another appointment in Kansas (GOV). In the next few weeks, in fact, we might have more trouble keeping track of all the new replacements than the new members of the Obama cabinet. Oh, and be sure to keep this in mind: Because Arizona doesn’t have a lieutenant governor, that means that the GOP Secretary of State Jan Brewer would replace Napolitano if she takes the job at Homeland.

Video: Bloomberg News’ Margaret Carlson talks about the recent additions to Barack Obama’s Cabinet as well as speculation that Arizona Governor Janet Napolitano is being eyed as Secretary of Homeland Security.

*** Cars and 2010: NBC’s Ken Strickland yesterday spotted these three senators at a Senate press conference announcing a bipartisan agreement to help the automotive industry: Kit Bond, Arlen Specter, and George Voinovich. What do they have in common besides hailing from car-producing states? All three are up for re-election in 2010.

*** Dems gaining ground in the South: Yesterday, we once again wrote about how the Republican Party appears to be concentrated in the South, noting that six of the party’s 13 incoming House and Senate leaders will now hail from that part of the country. But a House Democratic aide points out to us that they’ve gained ground there on the Republicans. Per numbers from the National Committee for an Effective Congress, Republicans enjoyed a 100-to-63-seat advantage over Democrats in the South heading into the 2006 midterms. Now, after the election two weeks ago, the GOP’s lead there has been reduced to 86-76 (with the LA-4 race still undecided) -- and the South is the only part of the country where the party has an advantage. In the East, Democrats lead Republicans, 68-15; in the Midwest, Dems are up 50-40, and in the West, they’re ahead 63-34.

*** The remaining races: In Georgia’s Senate run-off, Obama has cut a 60-second radio ad for Jim Martin (D), while Al Gore campaigns for Martin on Sunday… In Minnesota, the Star Tribune reports that on Day Two of the recount, Norm Coleman’s (R) lead over Al Franken (D) dropped to just 136 votes with about 46% of the vote counted… And in Ohio, a judge ruled that the provisional ballots must be counted in the extremely close House race between Mary Jo Kilroy (D) and Steve Stivers (R), which Stivers leads by 149 votes. Counting the provisional ballots would seem to benefit Kilroy.

Countdown to Georgia Senate run-off: 11 days
Countdown to Electoral Vote Count: 48 days
Countdown to Inauguration Day 2009: 60 days

What’s wrong with me?  I feel empty and lost.  Since Election night, I cannot get excited about the transition or personnel selections.  I am left wondering if others feel this way.

I know that President-elect Obama faces many difficult challenges, and he most likely will not be able to do everything he championed during the campaign.  I know he will shore up our low opinion throughout the world, and he will most likely get us out of Iraq sooner than we could expect. Still, I miss seeing him on a daily basis.

I hope his Inaugural Address will get me back on track.  Maybe the sight of one million people across the Washington Mall during his address will re-invigorate me.  I suppose when he gives his State of the Union address in front of Congress, that address will re-invigorate me.  But I keep asking myself, why I am so disinterested right now.

I have been reading your posts and see your passion.  I know many of you have let bygones be bygones when it comes to election winners and losers; Democrats versus Republicans; the Neo-Con media versus everyone else.  I must admit that I laughed at Palin’s interview yesterday at the turkey farm…she really has no clue does she?  Mostly, we have just decided to move on.

Anyone out there feel the same as me right now?

P.S.-  I am moving to Seattle, so the next time I post it will be Chuck, WA
Newsweek just showed a poll that said Barack Obama is the best and most popular President Elect ever!! I am so proud of my President!
Senator Clinton as SoS: I'll believe it when I see the announcement.

There have been so many back-and-forth stories about her taking the position, to her not taking the position, to Obama not even offering it to her....  It's difficult to keep track.

SO, I'll be watching closely after Turkey Day to see how this all shakes out.

Don't you liberals just love the government sending billions of our money to three companies that have 75 private jets combined?
Regarding the leaks, you're talking about the usually diciplined Obama folks? Obama leaked the contents of his PRIVATE conversation with President Bush a couple of weeks ago! And you're saying the Obama team is some how diciplined?
It would be nice if we Dems and Liberals could turn the bible belt south into a more secular area where Democrats once again have a solid south.  Best if the repugnant one's party just fades away into the dustbin of history.  They are the root of all the evils fouling our country.

Speaking of foul how about that foul turkey pardon the Wasilla Hillbilly pulled yesterday?  She is the foulest creature on this planet.  She was too clueless to figure out her backdrop of turkeys getting butchered ran against the whole pardon routine.  I know why she needed such an expensive makeup artist as she needs someone to slather on all those pounds of makeup to hide her hideous features.  I mean talk about a painted strumpet, she takes that prize hands down!
Isn't it ironic that after spending all summer accusing President Elect Obama of being "presumptuous", the media is now CRITICIZING him for not seeking the spotlight - only in America!

Senator Obama is working on a plan to face some of the biggest fiscal and military challenges we have faced in American History.  He has been President Elect for a little over two weeks. He is doing EXACTLY what he should be doing - building a team that can weather the storm ahead.

The truth is this is the time for two-term President George W. Bush to dust himself off and be the Texas cowboy that he is. What happened to "The Decider" that America elected? We all know what needs to be done, so I am calling on our CURRENT PRESIDENT to TAKE ACTION and stop waiting for his term to expire - America needs a President NOW!

The days of idealogues running our government with shallow soundbites is over. The hard work of rebuilding America begins January 20th.

YES WE CAN!
They aren't leaks if they don't come from people involved in the process.  Other than Andrea Mitchell's scoop during the Clinton Chicago visit, it does not appear to me that any of these so called leaks are in the least bit credible.  It is all just a bunch of speculation on the part of reporters and their sources.  Whether or not any of this has anything to do with fact is certainly dubious.
Can the media give it a rest already?  I'm getting so sick of all this nonsensical speculation about whether Hillary gets the Secretary of State job.  Geez give the story a rest will you and just let time go and before we know it we'll know for sure.

One argument that I haven't heard yet about saving the big three auto makers is the national security angle.  A pity that people have forgotten the vital national security role that the auto industry played in WW2.  It was the auto industry that was able to switch gears quickly and produce the tens of thousands of tanks, halftracks, trucks and jeeps that helped win the ground war in Europe and the Pacific.  We must ensure that in the event of a major land war with China or Russia we have a healthy auto industry that can quickly switch gears to make new M1 tanks, Bradley fighting vehicles, Humvees and such to win another ground war if the need arises.  Saving the auto industry is a national security issue and priority.
You just know it's the Repukes leaking out Obama's information. This is why no one can ever trust Repukes again, they can't keep their mouths shut. I adore Obama, in fact, I worship the ground he walks on, but these leaks from the repukes have got to be stopped.
I find this "round-robin," regarding Obama's inability to handle the Clintons, a non-news situation. If Obama has proven nothing else) he has shown that he is a grown-up. He was an unknown, who went against the party machine. And he WON! I think he can handle himself. Hillary Clinton would make a GREAT Secretary of State. Our President-elect is a wise man. After all, he won my state of Virginia.
It's nice to see that Pelosi has used her power to influence who heads up her committe chairs. Now, what's she ever done for the American people?
I hope she turns it down.  I can't imagine what she is thinking.  In the Senate she is and will continue to be a powerhouse mover and shaker - especially as Senator Kennedy powers down.   Legislation she has worked toward for years will now founder as she becomes a voice-box for someone else.   My question to Senator Clinton is "who are you and what have you done with Hillary?"     Is it ego?
Thanks for mentioning the concept of replacements as that's something I've been a tad concerned about.  I certainly wouldn't want to see any repugnant ones replacing good Democrats that get promoted up into the Awesome Obama Administration.

I'm glad to see that other readers are enjoying David Shuster.  I call David the "James Brown of MSNBC tv" as David is the hardest working newscaster on MSNBC tv.  He's on in the morning, at 1PM left coast time and now he's subbing for Keith on Countdown and doing an excellent job.  The one thing I miss when someone subs for Keith is that there is no Worst Person in the World segment.  I am so laughing that after that Mourning Jerky Joe whined at him it's David who's getting the last laugh as he gets more air time than that lame buffoon who brings dishonor to MSNBC tv in the morning.
How many synonyms can reporters come up with for the infamous "unnamed source"?....
staffer, associate, aide, insider, official, leaker, the person, friend.....
They've only counted the predominantly Democratic counties in Minnesota.  By the time they're done with the Republican counties, Coleman will have maintained his lead, no matter how desperately Al Franken tries to steal Minnesota.
Maybe the 'usually disciplined' Obama team is just now realizing that the Presidency can't be treated with the same thuggery as Chicago politics and they might finally get some scrutiny and expect some leaks.
By 2010 when the Dems have had control of Congress for four years, Republicans will have no problem getting seats back in the South.  People will be screaming for some adult leadership for a change.
The drama in American Democratic politics is never over, and will always continue on. In our Democracy the idea of boring does not exist, because our nation has such great diversity. What is going on in Minnesota, Georgia, Alaska, and now with Hillary are just the tip of the political ice cap.
Some fuss because Obama has brought back names and faces from the past. One of the big mistakes Bill Clinton was not to use Washington insiders. There should be no issue around Obama bringing in people who know what Washington is about.  So, the "Change we can believe in" comes from style and a new way of doing business.  The potential Clinton appointment is the best example of a new way of doing business.

The times, they are a changing.  I kinda wish the political pundits could change their thinking.  THe questions often asked would fit circumstances two years ago, but not now.  Richard Wolfe knows what's going on. Keith and Rachel see the big picture, but (Tip O'Neal) Chris, and got ya David still doesn't quite get it. It's about a new way of doing business.
Chris Matthews is right.  The Clinton's are define as the word Drama queens and kings......They love attention.
Sarah Palin for Sec. of State!  She's the only one who can save us from the terrorists because she's a patriot and a maverick!
Let's have a contest, shall we ? How many people will Presidente' George W. Bush pardon, just before he leaves office ? Well there is Alberto Gonzoles, Harriett Meires, Karl Rove ect. ect. ect.. The winner of this contest should recieve a all expense vacation to the George W. Bush Library. Where records will show he was the "worst" President in our nations history.
too many advisors trying to engratiate themselves with their press contacts...

and too many that were bad seeds to brgin with.
I do not understand why people assume Obama cares what gets leaked.  Did he care about what was said when McCain and his cohorts continued to throw him under the bus during the campaign? He has more to concern himself with than who is leaking what.  He has to keep one eye on the economy, who he puts in his cabinet and the other eye on Bush, who is obviously determined to screw up as much as he possibly can before running out of office.  Is there nothing we can do to get Obama in office on January 1st instead of the 20th???
Is it possible Claire McCaskill is not being considered?  She is a great politician and she was a very worthy advocate for Obama throughout the campaign.  I am happy with the way things are progressing in Minnesota and would love to see the grassroots push in Georgia.

PS.  Someone mentioned yesterday that Rachel never has adversarial guests.  Just last night she had Huckabee on her show.
"Call us skeptical, but why is it hard to believe that the news that Obama and Clinton have worked everything out and the appointment will take place just after Thanksgiving is something that will hold?" Because Bill Clinton has not given oral public spoken approval yet. Obama has found out how qucik the clinton's can put you in a corner.

I think the answer to your post is that the transition period, by its very nature, is not as "sexy" or "exciting" or "nail biting" as the election period.  And, I think the problems are so big, that we all feel like there's really no superstar out there waiting in the wings to be selected by Obama to solve all our problems.
If congress & other's are so worried about the PR nightmare from the Big 3 a couple days ago, let Congress go on a 10 day Vacation, while Rome burn's(Economy).

I don't critisize Democrat's that much, but now is'nt the time to go on a 10 day break, maybe a 4 day weekend(like a lotta worker's have)next week for Thanksgiving.

As far as Hillary's nomination goes, this is the very reason Barack did'nt pick her as VP.There's always too much Drama involved with the Clinton's, & Barack's message would've been swarmed under.

Harry Reid & Nancy Pelosi better think twice before taking off 10 day's, because in 2 year's, America may give them a longer vacation than they want.
Chris Matthews is right.  The Clinton's are define as the word Drama queens and kings......They love attention.

What the heck are you talking about? This whole thing about will she or wont she, is all media generated to give them something to report.  She has done nothing, and I mean nothing, to deserve being called a drama queen or attention whore by someone like you...all thats happened was that she's been told she's being considered for a job, and because she's not yet been actually offered it, publicly, and has not yet accepted or declined it, publicly, the media is fueling some kind of made up soap opera over this.  Give her a break already.  Or just shut up!
As a proud southern woman, The south will rise again as the democrats that we really are. It is impossible to imagine most of my working class friends vote republican but they do. they have been hoodwinked by the right wing religious nuts, but yall they cant help it, they are uneducated and ignorant. There is hope in the youth, Race relations are much better with
the youth. You can expect the south to come to its senses sooner than later, when they see that there are those in our government who offer up more than lip service the tide will turn.
marty
Not just Bond, Specter, and Voinovich need to be careful in this next Congress. You've also got Grassley, Gregg, Burr, and Martinez up in 2010. Between them the Moderate Mainers Snowe and Collins, even if Republicans keep 42 seats, I don't think filibusters will be very common at all. Voters could severely punish Republicans again if they go down the road of ideological obstructionism.
You just know it's the Repukes leaking out Obama's information. This is why no one can ever trust Repukes again, they can't keep their mouths shut. I adore Obama, in fact, I worship the ground he walks on, but these leaks from the repukes have got to be stopped.

Not my comments; but I guess I am not too offended.  Most of you know, I don't use slurs - I will usually say Repubs.  Could care less about the leaks,...
Who was it that said repeatedly during the campaign about the 'same old Washington players' doing 'the same old Washington business'?  Oh, that's right, that was Obama talking.  Wow, he's sure different and he's sure engaging a lot of different Washington players.  What a phony.
I know why she needed such an expensive makeup artist as she needs someone to slather on all those pounds of makeup to hide her hideous features.
-----------------------------------------------------
Eric, get a grip.  Whether you hate her politics or not, she's a very attractive woman.
Just can't believe I worked so hard and gave Obama so much money in the primary to make sure I didn't have to vote for Clinton in the general election, only to find myself forced to accept Obama inclusion of these power crazy, self-interested, dishonest, manipulative, triangulating Republican-Lite Clintons in his administration.  What a disappointment.
To Clara,
Obama's people ADMITTED they leaked the info! Get over it! Quit blaming the Republicans for the mess up the Obama team made. And by the way, he is President-Elect until January 20th.
Chuck and friends: Yes, you probably will all continue to report "skeptical stories" about Clinton as S.o.S between now and the official announcement, but that doesn't mean it's not, for all practical purposes, "a done deal." You pundits really need to get real about your ability to affect the news. Do you honestly think Obama sits around watching MSNBC and making decisions based on how you guys react to his choices, saying, "Oh, no, Chris Matthews is baffled by me picking Hillary and his panel thinks the Clintons will bring too much drama to my adnistration...oh dear, they keep pointing out that David Broder, the "Dean of Columnists" thinks it's a mistake. I guess I better go with Bill Richardson instead."? I trust the President Elect has better and more thoughtful reasons behind his choices than pleasing pundits.
NO HILLARY CLINTON AND BILL CLINTON!!!!!!!!!!
NO HILLARY CLINTON AND BILL CLINTON!!!!!!!!!!

HILLARY ALWAYS TAKES THE STAGE AND THE MEDIA GIVES IT TO HER.
David G and Chris M should put it to rest about Clinton.  I've had enough.  So what if there are leaks.  She will take it and everything will be fine. Geez!
Chuck, NY: '...What’s wrong with me?  I feel empty and lost.  Since Election night, I cannot get excited about the transition or personnel selections.  I am left wondering if others feel this way...'

Chuck, it's just withdrawal symptoms for a political junkie

Drink as much as possible and listen to your TV

'...P.S.-  I am moving to Seattle, so the next time I post it will be Chuck, WA...'

Welcome to the left coast
Seattle, the world's biggest car wash

I guess change is dead and once again the liberal media has been sold a can of goods.  Wake up America you are being played by both sides, there is no difference as long as we are restricted to a two party system.  Moreover, the issue is we have the news folks in bed with this two parties sysem and yes they continue to sell they lie that somehow we can expect change.
I voted for the President elect because I felt that America needed change. I did not trust either of the Bushs or Bill Clinton. I definately did not want Hillary in the White house to continue the American decline.
Obama was promising change. Now he is selecting Clinton as as top diplomat???
Where oh where is the promised change if he keeps the "old guard"???
I am already losing confidence in Obama before he even takes the Oath of Office.
marty, nice post and I do hope you're right about the south. It would be nice to put aside once and for all the North v. South different ways of looking at politics and way of life.

The 21st Century has arrived for all of us if we want to progress forward. It's exciting.

Chuck, I feel the exact opposite as you right now. As President-elect prepares for a new Administration, I'm struck by his depth of character. Picking Hillary Clinton was not something anyone thought he would do. And for him not to listen to the media or the far left or right is change enough for me.

It's nice to see Bill Clinton out there still campaigning for democrats where elections are still undecided. Hillary will do what's best for America. Of that we can be sure. I think they'll make a good team.

How do keep the camps quiet is another story. It's time to turn the page. Our country is in deep trouble. Obama knows that. Clinton knows that. There are more important things to talk and think about now other than Clinton or Obama supporters unhappy with his Administration so far.

He's picking the brightest people he can find to tackle our problems.

I don't know about anyone else, but I wouldn't want it any other way.

And I can't believe I got duped into Voting Obama by Obamabots like you who still don't get it...that without us Hillary SUpporters, we'ld be referring to President Elect McCain today!  You are so ungrateful, you need a good spanking!
If "Change" means the Bosnia sniper fire story becomes "foreign policy experience," our President-elect wants for Sec. of State someone with issues of credibility AND experience AND decision-making.
So much for a change we can believe in.  That's a change we can't believe.
If Obama handles the White House like he's handling his transition, we are in a lot of trouble until he gets impeached, or removed from office some other way.
Hillary as a mover and shaker in the senate.  I don't think so!!!  Ask any New Yorker what she has done for the state she "represents'!  Nothing.  She is not around enough.  Her agenda does not seem to include working for New York.  Why would I want her to represent the US when she doesn't do anything for the consituency she is suppose to be representing currently!
Hillary Clinton's appointment as Secretary of State was announced now to pave the way for the announcement of Larry Summers as Secy of Treasury.   The roll out and drama was just a way to placate the feminists who would have complained about Summers, now Hillary will stand with Obama welcoming Summers to the team and Obama gets both people he wanted.
Chuck, NY:

Your feelings are understood. I am hoping that Obama understands that in order to manintain the fervor for change and the excitement behind his election he will have to personally carry on some things that he sould not rely on staff to perform. The meeting with republicans by Rahmn was a good touch, but the people want to see Obama out front and taking charge personally. It is of course hard for one man to maintain the high that was incited into people during an election but there are several things Obama can do to help him maintain this support and enthusiam.

Hold town meetings (one per month with randomly selected average Amercians at various locations throughout the country or invite average Americans (20 to 25 randomly selected) to the Whitehouse once a month for breakfast or lunch and a two hour chat on the issues.

Hold televised "fire side" chats with Amercians as FDR did in order to keep in touch with Americans and to personally assure Amercians things are going to improve.

Develop a team to come up with ideas on how Obama can maintain the excitement and support he garnered from people during the election.

Conduct numerous press conferences (without the 5 to 8 aides standing behind him).

Get out of the Whitehouse as much as is possible and visit different parts of the country from time to time.

During any future natural or man-made catastrophe personally spend a day or two pitching in with releif workers, etc., rather than just flying over the scene to make a comment later back at Washington.

Personally welcome Troops returning home from Iraq or Afghainistan until all the Troops are home.

Your feelings are understood Chuck. The people want  to see and hear Obama. More so than prior Presidents. If he wants to maintain the hope for change and the enthusiam he seeks to bring about change he is going to have to do some things unheard of in prior administrations that include getting out among the people on a regular basis.
She has little foreign policy experience, only a political background. What change?
