Geithner likely to be Treasury Secretary

Posted: Friday, November 21, 2008 2:59 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From Chuck Todd and Andrea Mitchell
NBC News has learned that the president-elect is preparing to roll out his economic team on Monday -- and will personally announce the team and answer questions -- part of an effort to reassure markets.

Video: NBC News has confirmed that President-elect Barack Obama will announce his economic team on Monday, tagging New York Federal Reserve President Tim Geithner for treasury secretary. NBC's Chuck Todd and Andrea Mitchell report.

Barring last minute changes, the nominee for Treasury Secretary will be NY Fed President Tim Geithner -- a career Treasury official under both Bob Rubin and Larry Summers -- who actually had worked at the Treasury in three administrations under five Secretaries -- going back to 1988.

Geithner has been a key player in the current economic crisis -- helping Treasury Secretary Hank Paulson and his team manage the wall street bailout.

Former Treasury Secretary Summers -- also considered for the post -- might still play a major future role in the Obama administration, according to sources. Summers came under fire from women's groups because of controversial comments he made about gender issues while President of Harvard, but sources say the decision to choose Geithner had more to do with Obama's interest in "change" and getting someone new on the team.

Also expected Monday -- an announcement that former U.N. Ambassador and Energy Secretary in the Clinton administration, New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson, will be Commerce Secretary.

Paul Volcker is expected to play a continuing advisory role -- not clear if he would have an appointed position.

Other economic appointments for the White house staff will likely include Dan Tarullo, a top Obama advisor, possibly as head of the National Economic Council.

Other economic posts -- perhaps at the Council of Economic advisors in the White House -- could be filled by Obama economic advisors Austan Goolsbee and Jason Furman.

*** UPDATE *** Msnbc.com's Al Olson reports that immediately after NBC News' report on Tim Geithner likely to be named Treasury Secretary, stocks rebounded sharply. The Dow Jones Industrial Average was trading in negative territory -- down about 38 points -- before the news. Moments after, the Dow zoomed more than 300 points.

I'm really glad Governor Bill Richardson is going to be Secretary of Commerce.  He endorsed Obama at a critical time in the campaign and he is a great choice for this position.
He needs to do it today.  Right now, we do not have a President.  There is no one steering the boat.
WONDERFUL
What about Reich??? I like Him

Great for Richardson and great that Obama didnt take Summers. His mouth is worse than Bidens
;-D
So the cabinet beat goes on. Team Obama WILL get past the HRC drama sooner than later. We all have many more important fish to fry then to spend much more time wondering which way the Clintons will play.

Folks, I have learned some important things from watching Barack work his magic in the last year. He is intelligent and methodical in approach, a far cry from Dubya & co. Also, his opponents tend to underestimate him and he is pragmatic not idological in approach.

In short, he is well capable of helping to bring us the change we need.  Give him some space and you will see results sooner rather than later. :)

Viva That One!
> Geithner has been a key player in the current
> economic crisis -- helping Treasury Secretary Hank
> Paulson and his team manage the wall street bailout.

Well, what could possibly go wrong then with this pick?
this is some pretty cool information!
lol
Sounds like the same old guys from the Clinton administration.  Not much of change here.
Glad the President Elect is attempting to re-assure the financial markets but I continue to be a supporter of his stated position that only one President may serve at a time. I hope he's careful not to dip more than a toe in the water until he has to dive in. Too much input from him could further destabilize the dicey situation.
So this tells us?
Hopefully, there's a spot for  Sheila Bair, chair of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC).

She seems to be consumer oriented

It's time for RE-REGULATION of finanace and industry

Sorry, there's NO MAGIC in the markets, just greed and panic

How about Ralph Nader as an appointee

Team of Rivals ??
Obama must be pretty certain that Hillary will be SoS to tap Richardson for Commerce. I'm happy to see Richardson in the cabinet, although NM will surely miss him. Geithner sounds like an excellent choice for Treasury.
If Bush won't/can't do something then Obama will/can. Let's get going and turn this stuff around.
How is someone who worked closely with Henry Paulson a voice for change?
Excellent!
Goodie, now maybe these MSM talking heads can finally shut the hell up. I think the talking heads on various networks [MSNBC & CNN the only one's worth watching] have complained so much-- and about small things...

Who cares about leaks-- unless they have to do with the leaks in the dam we call our free market system. These are the leaks that need to be discussed, and I thought it was good reporting when a network was able to find out something first before another network did; talk about changing times I guess.

Our nation is about to hit rock bottom and stupidity is the only thing worth splattering on the screen. I know a few laughs never hurt every now and then, but some of the monolog and reporting in becoming monotonous. Come on people, wise up.
Kim "Mabus is a great choice for anywhere in the Obama administration. This guy is big on raising teacher pay and reforming education."

That would explain why Mississippi continues to have the worst education system of any of the 58 states in the union.

At least the teachers are well off though.
Very good news and good picks that just may cool Wall Street's dive.
Um, where's all this 'CHANGE' we were promised? All I see is the same old faces back for another round.
So the cabinet beat goes on. Team Obama WILL get past the HRC drama sooner than later. Ed Fw, Tx

You think we had drama with the Clintons? Just wait. Obama by himself would make the Clintons look like serious folk. Mix in Obama plus the Clintoons (two for one, remember?), and this could get very entertaining. No one will get any work done, but we'll all be amused.
isn't geithner the same guy who pushed to let lehman fail which turned out to be the worst possible thing for the economy according to a lot of people?
I will have respect for Obama if he stands up to the likes of Pelosi, Reid, Dodd, Frank, and co.  I dont see that happening.
It's the Clinton White House without Clinton. Change? or just a new face for socialism?
When is Paul Krugman going to come into the Economic picture for the Administration.
Obama is doing his thing in putting his cabinet together.  After his inauguration, he will be able to hit the ground running.
>> Glad the President Elect is attempting to re-assure the financial markets <<

Only down by 20% or so for the week. Obama's really doing a standup job for the markets.
There are so many clinton advisors etc in the mix...I thought I voted for CHANGE?!?
How is this change we can believe in?  I haven't heard of a single cabinet pick who isn't a Washington insider?  The VP is one of the longest serving senators in the U.S. Senate, SoS is Hillary, Emanuel is CoS, Richardson is Commerce Secretary, Daschle is HUD?  C'mon.  Politics as usual.  We got sold a bill of goods on this guy, and I voted form him!
What a bunch of the same ole shit
Are guys kidding!!!
After the Hispanics went overboard for Obama, this is what we get. no wonder. a bone trow.
no wonder a mayority of american voters are political neophytes.
"WHO KILLED THE ELECTRIC CAR?"

a documentary about GM that everyone should see.

Corruption killed the electric car. CORRUPTION.

OIL MAFIA CORRUPTION IS THE CAUSE OF ALL OUR ECONOMIC ILLS.
I think Obama is doing a great job, I am glad he is taking his time, about picking the right people to work with, I also believe change is on the way, just like he promised.
Ed, FW, Tx:

I appreciate your comments. Obama is smart and methodical. When it is all done. American will have a strong Executive Branch, made from a mix of Washington insiders and outsiders. I have observed that Obama thinks bigger than most.  It will be fun to watch what comes off the drawing boards in the next 6 months.
Ralph Nader would be a good choice for head of the SEC. We need someone to watch and clean up Wall Street.
Finally - Richardson gets his spot!  Very important move and an important post!  He is a hard, hard worker.
Kudos for Richardson! The best of the old Clintonian has finally been rewarded for his support. I still think he should have been SOS.
We need a leader that knows what the heck they signed up for.  What's the Market doing today with this news?
Interesting choices to bring about real 'CHANGE' in Washington!  But will it wake up and bring sense to manipulators hard at work in the Wall Street?
I thought we were going to have CHANGE! Not a bunch of ex-Clinton people and Hillary herself. What's going on?
This is a great news, I know Obama will make a wise decision at the end, this is a very smart guy and making smart decision. Looking forward for more surprise decisions.

Lanre, Charlotte, NC
What change?  All Obama is doing is picking from the same pool of political hacks.  Are you DummiCraps to blind to see that?  Those of us who work, but aren't rich enough to be liberals are really gonna get screwed with the DummiCraps running both the Congress and the White House.  Mind you, having the RepugnantOnes has been a mess, as well.  I'm no fan of either party, so I feel we needed a split government to prevent either group of incompetents from having the ability to easily push their stupid agendas.
NOTHING is more important these days that the key economic posts, with Sec of Treasury being the most important.  If they don't instill some serious confidence, and clearly begin to do things right, the spiral we are in will be a disaster for America.

So, let's keep our fingers crossed.
Interesting 'Economic Team' choices to bring about real 'CHANGE' in Washington!  But will it wake up and bring sense to manipulators hard at work in the Wall Street?
When does Hilary Clinton take office! Change or back to the future.
I don't understand. None of these people are graduates of Pat Roberston's Liberty University or even went to high school with Obama. How can they possibly be qualified?
Change???  The change comes with who the commander in chief is. . not who he appoints!!! Why can't some of you people see that??  Do you want him to appoint some new guy no one has heard of who has no experience??  OR the guy who has 10,000 hours of experience in all the ins and outs of the office he will be appointed to.  Obama needs experienced men and woman in his cabinet. . whether it be from Clinton Admin, Reagan, or even Bush. . THE POINT is they will be following a TOTALLY DIFFERENT president who WILL bring about change!!  Come on you guys get a brain.  Wake up. . We need experience to back up our new president. . not someone who needs to now learn on the job!!!
Obama made smart choices for his economic team. I have a lot of confidence in them. As far as Richardson's appointment goes, I have NO confidence in his abilities. He was a total failure as Sec of Energy under Bill Clinton and an absentee governor for NM.
I do like the fact that Geithner wasn't yet another CEO from an investment house.

Clinton... could go either way... high risk, high reward.

Richardson is a safe no brainer pick for just about any cabinet position.
I'm not really impressed. It would be refreshing to see some new faces, perhaps a mix of respected economists and business leaders. Instead, we're being treated to the same lawyers who seemingly will ensnare us in double talk, divisive politics, and hopelessly compromised decision-making.

I'm holding out for Paul Krugman.
To the moron bloggers critical of tying Obama's cabinet selections to the those from the Clinton administration, get a grip! Where is the talent pool? It comes from those who were 2nd string and now have more experience and influence. Factually, Reagan took on people from Ford and Nixon. Change is about vision and management not for Jane and John Doe. The same blogging bozo's would comment if fully unknown people were recommended to the cabinet.
