Geithner likely to be Treasury Secretary

Posted: Friday, November 21, 2008 2:59 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From Chuck Todd and Andrea Mitchell
NBC News has learned that the president-elect is preparing to roll out his economic team on Monday -- and will personally announce the team and answer questions -- part of an effort to reassure markets.

Video: NBC News has confirmed that President-elect Barack Obama will announce his economic team on Monday, tagging New York Federal Reserve President Tim Geithner for treasury secretary. NBC's Chuck Todd and Andrea Mitchell report.

Barring last minute changes, the nominee for Treasury Secretary will be NY Fed President Tim Geithner -- a career Treasury official under both Bob Rubin and Larry Summers -- who actually had worked at the Treasury in three administrations under five Secretaries -- going back to 1988.

Geithner has been a key player in the current economic crisis -- helping Treasury Secretary Hank Paulson and his team manage the wall street bailout.

Former Treasury Secretary Summers -- also considered for the post -- might still play a major future role in the Obama administration, according to sources. Summers came under fire from women's groups because of controversial comments he made about gender issues while President of Harvard, but sources say the decision to choose Geithner had more to do with Obama's interest in "change" and getting someone new on the team.

Also expected Monday -- an announcement that former U.N. Ambassador and Energy Secretary in the Clinton administration, New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson, will be Commerce Secretary.

Paul Volcker is expected to play a continuing advisory role -- not clear if he would have an appointed position.

Other economic appointments for the White house staff will likely include Dan Tarullo, a top Obama advisor, possibly as head of the National Economic Council.

Other economic posts -- perhaps at the Council of Economic advisors in the White House -- could be filled by Obama economic advisors Austan Goolsbee and Jason Furman.

*** UPDATE *** Msnbc.com's Al Olson reports that immediately after NBC News' report on Tim Geithner likely to be named Treasury Secretary, stocks rebounded sharply. The Dow Jones Industrial Average was trading in negative territory -- down about 38 points -- before the news. Moments after, the Dow zoomed more than 300 points.

People are so ready to criticize the lack of change already...Obama clearly stated we needed a CHANGE from the last 8 years and restore the good Clinton days. If it takes getting back the same brains of his admin...So be it. When he starts keeping folks from the Bush admin that's when we criticize not now...Just HOLD your horses...You'll get your chance to criticize later I'm sure b/c we shouldn't be naive and think it will be a perfect 4-8 years.
To WSB in Bethesda, MD:  We do have a president.  His name is George W. Bush.  I would have thought that with your close proximity to DC, you would have known that.
There has never been a time in history that we have needed a stong president as we do now.  Obama has to get it right in order to get the country back on track.  I believe the country is blessed to have Obama leading the country out of these dark times.
All you people that are praising obama and he hasn't done 1 thing. The only thing he has done is show us that the change he is making was the change that America got rid of with Bill Clinton. The change you are going to get is far worse then what we have now. You think this is bad....just wait.
It's amazing how the Obama crowd oohs and ahhs about every pick Obama makes, not even knowing who in the world most of these people are. They know a few personalities and most of the Clinton reruns, but for the rest of them, they haven't a clue. The voters of this country truly have become totally uneducated. Many thanks to our public school system for this result.
I wish Obama should also appoint somebody from other sectors. New face, New ideas and people that really wants to serve the people in this country.
I thought Obama was for CHANGE. Based upon his picks for cabinet, he's doing nothing but keeping things the SAME. He got the same ol' bums running things that have run them in the past. Maybe he will appoint Bill Clinton ambasador to Amsterdam or Thailand.
Giether looks like a good choice but a second choice. Summers was the guy but his problems at Harvard propbably kept him form getting the nomination. Geither will do fine as long a Summers and Volcker hang around as advisors to Obama. A good first step but we need Jan 20th to get here in a hurry so these guys can get to work......
Change?  Ha!  The man behind the curtain has you all fooled.  I feel sad for those who voted the Obama ticket solely on his "Change" message.  The hearts of millions are going to be broken when they realize Barack Obama is no different than nearly every politician on the hill.  As someone sarcastically stated:

"Geithner has been a key player in the current
economic crisis -- helping Treasury Secretary Hank
Paulson and his team manage the wall street bailout.

Well, what could possibly go wrong then with this pick? "
Extremely good credentials he has <a href= "http://www.federalreserve.gov/aboutthefed/bios/banks/pres02.htm"> Tim Geithner Bio </a>
I personally think for the first time in long time, that MR Obama will do what ever it takes to bring this country back to what it once was and that will keep the republicans out of power for long time and that is good for america and the rest of the world, go Obama 2012.
All the gossip that Obama is selecting lots from the Clinton era, so there is no change!!!!! Clinton had lots of intellectuals surrounding him, and so will President Elect Obama.  We have had eight years of an unintelligible man, so Obama and staff will be a breath of much needed sunshine!  God bless all.....
I am so glad to see Bill Richardson of NM entering onto the scene he a level head and will balance the cabinet.   Perhaps getting the cabinet together will calm people down and start to begin to get things under control on the financial front.  Much of this "meltdown" has to do with a lack of leadership and as we all know there can only be one President at a time.  As for those who criticize Obamas choices keep in mind other than many former Clinton People we have had a strong democratic group to pick from since the Carter admin so Obama needs to pick people who have experience, many of whom were in the Clinton Admin in some mannner.  However, Geithner has been around for a while.  Hopefully he can help get turned around.
Richardson is a good pick.  Geithner is a disasterous one.
The Obama cabinet is an one heck of an all star team while Dubya's people are mostly second stringers (and journeymen).  It is about time the American people had some good leadership!!!  Let go to bat and WIN!
It is now obvious that the tested and proven components of President Clinton's administration will be the core of Obama's team....those 8 years of peace and prosperity were the best in my lifetime....but what an irony that both Bill and Hillary were demonized during the campaign, and are now considered to be major players during the upcoming term....it is just a shame that for the next four years Hillary will be addressed as Madame Sectretary instead of Madame President

They sold McCane as Bush II but they didn't tell us BHO would be Clinton II. What position is Monica going to get....for that mater, what position is Bill going to get?
I for one am glad to see Richardson at commerce.  At least he will no longer be in NM - not that he ever really lived here anyway - just a carpet-bagger passing through.  Hope BHO has a tight leash.
I hope  the citizens will relax.  We need cool heads in this time frame.  We will come out and see a bright future if people will stop being negative and insulting.  Obama is not in office yet.  Give him space and a chance.  He will do better than the last eight years. The last eight years have cost us.  It will take time to clean the mess that Bush has provided.  The difference in depression times and now is patience.  Today's society wants it right now. They are not patient.  I feel our society is  spoiled.  Now it is time to pay for over buying and credit cards and start saving and living in your means.I pray for our country.
