Dawson officially enters RNC race

From NBC's Mark Murray
Katon Dawson, the chairman of the South Carolina Republican Party, today officially announced his bid to become the next chairman of the Republican National Committee.

“I am running to serve as chairman of the Republican National Committee because I’m ready to help lead our party’s turnaround," he said in a statement. "We need to turnaround our fortunes in many regions of the country. We need to turnaround our grassroots organization, our fundraising, our use of technology and new media, and our candidate recruitment. We must move forward with the confidence that our message of optimism, hope, and freedom still resonates in the hearts of our fellow Americans.”

But in a sign that this will be a contentious contest for RNC chair, opponents to Dawson's candidacy passed along to First Read a South Carolina newspaper article noting that Dawson stepped down from a whites-only country club back in September. "He resigned ... as The State pursued an article on his membership in the club and his role in an internal push to admit African-Americans as members."

More from the article: "Dawson wrote a letter to club leaders Aug. 20, urging them to allow people of color. 'It is with only the best interests of our club’s proud tradition at heart that I inform you of my intent to work to change the club practice that would exclude membership for anyone based on any specific ethnicity,' he wrote in the letter obtained by The State."

Other announced and potential contenders for RNC chairman include Michigan GOP chair Saul Anuzis, current RNC chair Mike Duncan, former Huckabee campaign manager Chip Saltsman, and former Maryland Lt. Gov. Michael Steele.

*** UPDATE *** Dawson spokesman Rob Godfrey responds to the oppo on his boss. "We're not going to get bogged down in the inside-the-Beltway game of 'gotcha' politics." Instead, Godfrey says that Dawson is focused on the big issues that RNC members care about: rejuvenating the GOP's grassroots, raising money, and competing in every county across the country. Godfrey also notes that during Dawson's tenure as South Carolina GOP chair, someone became the state's first African-American RNC member, and another person this month became the first black Republican elected to the South Carolina General Assembly since Reconstruction.

In other news, the White Star Line has advertised the availability of a position as ship's captain on one of its largest vessels – "experience with icebergs a plus."
The Republicans will be back. Even Michael Moore said it and I couldn't believe it. He's a big, big Obama man so what's the deal with that kind of statement?
No bailouts for anyone.
No bailouts for anyone.
No bailouts for anyone.

Is anybody listening out there?
Did I read this correctly?  Opponents of Dawson think opposing segregation is a bad thing and they better represent the future of the Republican party?  Sounds like the Republican party is like the economy -- it will get a lot worse before it gets better.
If S.C. Rnc chairman is what you republicans want, you can expect to continue to go down in flames. That is no change for yall at all. Here in S.C. the GOP remains a sad excuse for a political party, much more concerned about the Bible and legislating morality. They do have our S.C. house and senate wall to wall repubs. Look at how we fare in education, human services, look at our economy. Yeh!!! the good ole boys at thier finest, only the rich survive here in S.C. So if you want more of the same, you can get it from a RNC chairman from S.C. Very seriously I am hoping that the uneducated here in this state will finally realize that they are not republicans, that they are very poor people being used by the greedy and corrupt republicans that profess to be christians.

For a second there, I thought someone was declaring themselves a presidential candidate for 2012 already.
Dawson written letter to club leaders Aug. 20th should have urged not just inclusion of people of color; but inure best interests of today’s injecting some of today's rhetoric.  Instead of  giving more diversionary tactics of religion, sex, education, energy, and concern for the average Joe and Jane, try those sensibly.

While I can only hope his intentions were genuine (yeah, right), I'm guessing that this is merely a calculation on his part as he knew this would be an issue in his intended run for the RNC chair.  What would be interesting is that if he does not get to chair the RNC, would his convictions be the same.

RNC= hindenburg.....or titanic...oh the humanity!!
Dawson is more of the same representing the GOP/RNC, and will try to strengthen the backwards Republican grassroots efforts. The Really Not Competent (RNC), have another culturally inept individual, wanting to lead them to the biggest "nothing" in American Political History. That is fact!
Same old formula. Get 'got' and groan about the 'gotcha' games.
Another Republican that thinks Conservatism is the path to reconstruction. Conservatism=the result of narcisissim that has gone bonkers! Palin in 2012! That will guarantee another 4 years of Barak Obama!
Not knowing anything about Mr. Dawson other than that he wrote a letter encouraging racial progress in his country club, but joining the club in the first place is questionable to me.
My daughter refused to go with a friend's family to a country club because the parents said her black friend couldn't come along. She was a sophomore in high school at the time, and made quite an impression on that family.
Each of us must make a stand ... somewhere.
a man who has had a 12 yr membership in a whites-only country club is just what the RNC deserves as its leader!

silly to think they (RNC) could get ahead of the game and actually think inclusivity rather than exlusivity, their biggest problem.  must be Christian, must be white, must be anti-gay ..only must-have is lots-o-money ...
This guy was to going to this club for 12 years and then all the sudden He notices  that there are no blacks in this club. He probably said something along this line: I'm shocked, shocked that there are no blacks in this club. Keep up the good work Republicans; you can't pick a better candidate.
You know it's a problem when the response has to include the word "Reconstruction" in it.
Dawson's candidacy passed along to First Read a South Carolina newspaper article noting that Dawson stepped down from a whites-only country club back in September. What was his apartheid role in this club and now he expects to gain by stepping down. Do you think he took off the sheet to truly show his face? They will do anything to gain notority. The GOP/RNC has become the lost party of the Republic.
It's only "gotcha politics" when the politician is either too ignorant of the answer or need to be evasive. A fine example of that was Sarah Palin in her interviews. Ignorance and evasiveness, to the max.
