McCain looks back, praises Obama team

Posted: Tuesday, November 25, 2008 1:27 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC's Domenico Montanaro
Arizona Sen. John McCain, in his first news conference since losing his bid for the presidency, applauded President-elect Obama's cabinet appointments so far, particularly that of Arizona Gov. Janet Napolitano (D) potentially as Homeland Security secretary.

Interesting, considering she hasn't been nominated yet, and convenient, since Napolitano was seen as a top rival for McCain's Senate seat in 2010.

Thank you, Mr. President-elect. A couple of chits for Obama with McCain -- (1) Eliminating a top political opponent and (2) Making nice with Joe Lieberman.

VIDEO: McCain gives his first news conference since losing his bid for the presidency.

"I intend to run again," McCain said, adding that he will make an official announcement at the appropriate time. "I always expect a tough race," McCain added later, lightheartedly cocking a fist and smiling.

McCain also reflected on the campaign, saying he looks "back with pride and honor."

"You really have to take an attitude ... that what a great honor it's been to be able to serve this country for so long," he said, adding, "We worked hard, and we inspired a lot of people, Sarah Palin and I. I think we look back with pride ... [and] accept very much that people have made a decision."

Regarding Palin, he said she has a "very bright future in the leadership of the Republican Party." He added that she was chosen, first and foremost, because she was a "reformer" -- not because of political considerations that a woman could have been potentially helpful in swaying Hillary Clinton voters.

In a bit of post-election analysis on why he lost, McCain pointed to that when the campaign started, Iraq was a top issue, but that later shifted to the economy as the top concern. Voters were looking for a change in the stewardship of the country and economic philosophy, he said.

"I respect that. I don't in any way criticize it," McCain said, laughing.

*** UPDATE *** NBC's Lauren Appelbaum and Ashley Codianni add, McCain also said he plans to travel to Iraq, Afghanistan and Pakistan "soon." "Of course we know we know we face significant challenges in Afghanistan," McCain said, "which I think almost all of us are in agreement, will require increased U.S. presence, NATO participation...."

McCain also reaffirmed his support for the issue that nearly sunk his presidential campaign -- comprehensive immigration reform.

"Running for re-election has never been a concern of mine as far as issues like that are concerned," McCain said. "I intend to discuss that with the President-elect. It's pretty clear that our agenda, that all Americans are, is our economy. But I still am committed to comprehensive immigration reform. ... Right now, the president's agenda is something that we have to, Republicans and Democrats alike, adhere to. And it's very clear that the state of our economy will be the number one agenda item."

On the Republican Party's future, McCain stressed fiscal conservatism, specifically cutting spending and reducing earmarks -- both of which were campaign platforms.

"Republicans have to show the American people that we have solutions to the economic challenges that face this nation, that are incredibly large, as we all know," he said.

When asked, the 72-year-old McCain ruled out a future presidential run -- with a laugh.

"I think right now my focus is on running re-election for the United States senate," he said. "I do not envision a scenario that would entail that."

Oh my God "Insane McCain!" Are you for real?? Your pick of "Puppet Palin" was dangerous, dishonorable, and a decision of "political greed" on your part! The only people who were inspired by "Puppet Palin" were the, culturally backward, politically angry/corrupt, racially divisionary/hateful, and religiously paganistic. Now some "lunatic" right wing religious group, connected to the GOP/RNC. Have made a "comedy commercial" thanking the "Dizzy Diva!" Where is my barf bag?? "Insane McCain" your sarcastic "two-Faced" praise of Obama's cabinet selections are a joke. You still have a political "hatchet" to grind "Insane McCain!" The American People who read do not believe you one bit! Not a good way "Insane McCain" to rebuild political bridges of trust. That is fact!!
Who's John McCain?
I like how every politico is kissie-face after an election, as they all try to figure out how to steal their citizens blind.
Which Palin is McCain talking about, Palin the reformer, I know of Palin the politician from Alaska that has no proplem taking money from constituents, for sleeping at home, for flying her family all over and for abuse of power. I personelly dont care if they talk her up for 2012 but get real, the repubs will not let this woman near a camera and microphone as a candidate for pres or vp again. She is unfit for any office, she conned the good people of Alaska with sound bites and talking points. Wont happen in the lower 48,just a few right wing religious nuts. Good christians wont look at her twice. S.C. likes her a lot, but we're not to educated down here.

I'm not sure that the Make Believe Maverick to this day knows what Palin was doing on his ticket.  I for one think the man needs to get out of politics altogether and hope the people of Arizona can find a strong independent, democrat or libertarian to send him on his way.
Boy, if that was an "honorable" campaign I'd hate to see him sling mud.
Why is McCain going on and on about Palin?  He should just acknowledge that she was his running mate and leave it at that.  I don't think she could have helped him win but she certainly helped him lose.  I can't imagine what would be happening now if they had won the campaign.

I feel safe and secure knowing that we finally have an intelligent, thoughtful, decisive PE Obama and the team he is surrounding himself with.  He will get us out of the mess that Bush/Cheyney and all their cohorts got us into.  What galls me is that they won't even accept responsibility for it.  Instead Bush wants to give us a few more kicks in the *ss before he leaves.  ex.  Land managment deal to open up oil leases in Utah on pristine land (Rachel Maddow show last nite), change the protected species act to allow developement anywhere, uranium mining near the Grand Canyon, and the list goes on.  I don't know how he sleeps at nite.

Off topic, but a judge in Fl. today put a big dent in the legislation that denies gay people from adopting.  There are lots of kids needing loving homes and it shouldn't matter at all what your sexuality is, there are lots of hetero people who keep procreating that should not be - Palin being one of them.

As a life long liberal, I would be delighted if Palin becomes the future of the GOP. I've never seen someone with such a shallow intellect emerge on the national political scene. She appeals to the backward thinking fools that listen to Limbaugh and O' Reilly to do their thinking. Not the voice of the 21st century.
The only kind of reforming that Palin is capable of, is to convince people that the EXTREME FAR RIGHT is good; just like Bush, it's her way or the highway!!!!
I, personally, wouldn't care if she was never heard from again!!
Hey, Rock, nice analysis EXCEPT for one thing: Sarah Palin is not "religiously paganistic." Paganism is a real religion, and Sarah Palin couldn't be less like any real Pagans I know, including myself! In fact, her old Pastor in Alaska HUNTS Pagans. Slander Mrs. Palin all you want, but don't insult Pagans in the process, okay?
Hillary Clinton's 18 million voters loved and respected Hillary Clinton as a smart, strong, well-informed progressive woman who was able to speak with ease on any topic - foriegn or domestic.

Sarah Palin is not smart, not progressive (bring back the wire hanger illegal abortions!) not well informed and is unable to speak with authority on any important issue.

There is truly NO comparison.
Palin a Reformer,,,,LOL.I guess her abuse of power is there idea of reform.I guess charging the state to stay in your own house is reform.Letting your first dude do your dirty work, sit in on state biz meetings, thats reform.Having Wallace type of events, and whipping up the racists base, thats reform. Now I know the Bomber is a fighter but clinched fist,in a fight against a woman.Better watch out Johnny she might kick your a$$,in more ways then you think.
Time for trash talk is over;especially by those who wanted so bad to see the polarizing atmosphere in Washington end.
ok all you annoying Democrats who have nothing nice to say about Palin, McCain or any republicans for that matter..
You wanted your cake.. well now you get to eat it too.. but be advised.. you also must indure the indugestion from your... "we want change" menu..
hope you can last for the next 4 years..
I for one can see why every one is against Palin but its not like as if Hillary is all good either. Even has many   flaws in wich the public does not fully register.
V- don't worry, we won't be nearly a sick in 4 or 8 years has the past 8 have made us, heck, you might even have better health too.
