Gates likely to remain at Pentagon

Posted: Tuesday, November 25, 2008 4:44 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC's Jim Miklaszewski
One source familiar with the selection process tells NBC News that Defense Secretary Robert Gates will remain on the job at the Pentagon for at least a year. "That's been a done deal for sometime," according to the sources. "No other name has been seriously floated as a possible candidate."

Video: President-elect Barack Obama is expected to confirm that current Defense Secretary Robert Gates, appointed by President Bush, will likely remain at the Pentagon for at least a year.

The deal was sealed for Gates when former Marine Corps Commandant Jim Jones was mentioned as the probable candidate for National Security Adviser, and former Admiral Dennis Blair was named as the likely pick for Director of National Intelligence, according to one source.

"That's a dream team that Gates could clearly work with," the source said.

Two other sources involved or familiar with the process said, as of yesterday, Gates was all but certain.

"It was the formula all along," according to one source, that Gates would stay in the Pentagon, retain a small number of his personal staff while a Democrat, appointed by Obama as Deputy Defense Secretary, would put together the remainder of the top staff.

According to officials close to Gates, to avoid being labeled a "lame duck," he asked that a specific timetable not be attached to his term, but something more loosely defined, such as "under 4 years."

It'd be tough for someone new to come into Defense now to work on getting us out of Iraq, and Gates hasn't just been a Bush "yes man."
Gates seems to be in tune with President-elect Obama disengagement in Iraq. Gates has noticed how much of a tendency towards what might be called NEXT-WAR-ITIS - the propensity of much of the defense establishment to be in favor of what might be needed in a future conflict. Source: military. com
If we cut the tremendous amount, most Americas believe we save the most precious gift on earth, life and money. This money can definitely be used in America.

David Schuster, you are n of my favorites, how could you disappointment. Is President-elect Obama any more fiscally irresponsible than Bush. The point is to at least start economic recovery short term.

P.S. Enjoy your Thanksgiving Day feasts everyone.
Gates was brought in to help develop and impliment a new Iraq policy (the surge).  Keeping Gates on means Obama will continue the Bush Iraq policy.  Gates never would have stayed on if it was to undo his own success.  Obama must be ready to abandon his pledge to bring the troops home in 15 months.
I am a former student from Texas A&M, and I must say that while I am extremely excited for Dr. Gates, majority of us down here can't help but feel a little selfish and want him back in Aggieland.  However, we acknowledge that he is the best man for the job, so this is a great move for Obama.

Gig'em Gates!
This is a smart move.  All along Gates has tried to make the best of a bad situation - he comes from the Bush I/Baker/Scowcroft foreign policy pragmatist wing of the party.  He also has the ground commanders' confidence so we won't have cross-purposes as we disengage from Iraq and refocus on Afghanistan and Pakistan for the real war on the anarchist-terrorists.  Too bad he wasn't Sec Def at the time the Iraq invasion decisions were made.  We either wouldn't have gone in or wouldn't have had the half-brained execution that lead to it becoming such a protracted, bloody fumble.
Sniff, sniff.  Funny, I didn't know change smelled like B.S.
Gates has shown competence, concern, and a great insight into how to run the Pentagon. This is one of the few picks that Bush has made correctly. He will keep the Pentagon "hawks" in check, and work productively to get our military out of Iraq quickly. That is fact!
As an Air Force member, I think this is great news!
