B. Clinton, Hagel react to picks

From NBC's Domenico Montanaro
Two statements reacting to Obama's selection are from Chuck Hagel and Bill Clinton. Hagel, it seems, has been shut out from the Obama cabinet. The Nebraska Republican, who accompanied Obama abroad during the campaign, was talked about for VP, State and Defense, but he has been shut out from all three. Bill Clinton, of course, thought his wife at State was a good move, saying, "As an American, I am thankful...."

*** UPDATE *** Even Joe Lieberman (and Rush Limbaugh) have praise for Obama's picks.

LIEBERMAN: "I applaud President-Elect Obama for assembling a talented and bipartisan national security team. At a moment in history when our nation faces both great dangers and great opportunities in our foreign relations, the President-Elect has begun to build an administration that can lead America forward on the world stage with purpose and principle."

Limbaugh, per AP, called the pick of Clinton, "a brilliant stroke." "You know the old phrase, 'You keep your friends close and your enemies closer?' How can she run for president in 2012? She'd have to run against the incumbent and be critical of him -- the one who made her secretary of state," Limbaugh said.

CHUCK HAGEL:
"The national security team President-Elect Obama has assembled is a serious, experienced and widely respected group of leaders. They are all seasoned professionals. This team gives President-Elect Obama a strong foundation to build a new bipartisan consensus for America's foreign policy that will be required to confront the enormous 21st Century challenges facing America and the world. I congratulate President-Elect Obama and Vice President-Elect Biden for assembling such an impressive team of strong and capable leaders."

BILL CLINTON:
"As an American, I am thankful that President-elect Barack Obama has asked Hillary to be Secretary of State and that she has accepted. As her husband, I am deeply proud. She is the right person for the job of helping to restore America's image abroad, end the war in Iraq, advance peace and increase our security, by building a future for our children with more partners and fewer adversaries, one of shared responsibilities and opportunities. She has already earned the respect of foreign leaders and diplomats through her work to promote human rights and the empowerment of women through access to education, healthcare and economic opportunity. And Americans know, from her leadership in the Senate on national security, that she will always put the security, values and the interests of our people first.

"In her service to the people of New York and our nation, Hillary has demonstrated the knowledge, passion, resilience, and capacity to learn that our country needs at this critical time. She loves being a Senator from New York, but as she has in all the thirty-seven years I've known her, she answered the call to serve. I commend President-Elect Obama for asking her to be a part of a great national security team. America will be well-served."

I hope Obama finds a place for Chuck Hagel
He's an honest and independent politician
Why didn't he get National Security Advisor?
If Chuck Hagel had wanted to be in Obama's cabinet, then I'm sure he would have been, i.e., I don't think he was "shut out."
wow Hagel, what a stateman!!!  Thank you Sir
Now thats "Country First".
Kudos to both Chuck and Bill for their kind comments on Obama's picks.  I still hope that Obama can find a place for Chuck Hagel in his administration.  Kudos to Bill for opening up his data for public scrutiny so that his wife can be Secretary of State.  A definite sacrifice that must be applauded!
I for one thought for sure he would ask Chuck Hagel to be in his upcoming cabinet.  Why is Hagel left out completely?

His other picks are fine, but why not put Chuck H. in there somewhere???
who called her to serve prior to O-man?  and O-man has wisely chossen to remove her from the senate.  hillsy & billsy have never put anyone not named clinton first & never will.

Obama, congrats on getting her out of the senate.

Hagel just got stuffed by Obama. Seems Chuck fell for all that bi-partisan garbage Obama was putting out. Now everyone hates you Chuck.

Did you learn your lesson Chuck?
I want to see Chuck Hagel on PE Obamas team somewhere.
I want someone to react to the agreement we have sort of reached in Iraq. A terrible agreement for our troops. Gates doesnt seem to be concerned about it. I will be glas to see the end of Gates in a year. I really wish he were going with Bush. I do believe that PE Obama has our best intrest in mind with his
appointments.
marty
Well, Bill, there were other people besides Hillary involved. Did you fail to notice this?
Hagel for SoD when Gates is done
Even Joe Lieberman (and Rush Limbaugh) have praise for Obama's picks.

Rush Limbaugh praised the picks?  I am in shock.  That honeymoon won't last long I'm sure as Limbaugh finds fault with anyone who does not believe as he does.
The man is brilliant.I'm so happy he was elected president.

This from the man who claimed that Obama's inexperience would be "dangerous" and stopped just short of calling him a Terrorist.  I guess the old saying is true.  The toes you step on today are usually connected to the a55 you'll have to kiss tomorrow.

So, the Clinton appointment to State is viewed as a political move by Obama? What happened to getting the 'best person for the job.'?

And Limbaugh likes the pick because he knows the trouble it will cause later on down the line. For instance, how do you fire Hillary?
Personally, I don't give a rat's behind what Limbaugh thinks about the picks. He's such a... well, a rat's behind (only much bigger).
Love Chuck Hagel.  I wrote him way back when over the Iraq War and his wonderful statement in the Senate about that vote at that time.
Obama may have a place for Hagel in the future.  As one reader said, maybe he will take Gates place.  I really like Chuck Hagel and think he would be good for Obama's cabinet.  He may also be good for Obama if he stays in the Senate.
Not to worry about Chuck Hagel.  The man is too good to leave out.  I believe Hagel is in line for SecDef when Gates "continuity" tour is over. Who else?!
Gates is only in for a year so maybe Hagel will replace him
I really hope Hagel becomes part of Obama's cabinet.
I believe the President-elect id to be commended for surrounding himself with aqualiy group of peopl. it represents by their diversity a fulfillment of his promise to have a broad range of ideas and thinking. it also shows he has the strength of vision and commitment to not surround himself with political yes men amnd women.
Hagel will be the next Sec of Defense.
HAGEL NEED TO CLEAN THE FLOOR OF THE WHITE HOUSE
I don't think Chuck Hagel was shut out.  Remember Robert Gates will probably only be there a year and then be replaced, because he wants to retire.  Chuck Hagel is a good man and I am sure he will still be an asset to President-Elect Obama
The appointments are not over, particularly Head of Veterans Affairs for Senator Hagel.  He also could be Secretary of Defense in waiting, however, he disagrees with President-elect Obama in several areas.
I really think that if Chuck Hagel wanted to be in Obama's cabinet he would be.  Why look for trouble?  Quit trying to stir the pot and let this well chosen new cabinet do their jobs.  Obama is doing an amazing job so far.  We should all just rejoice and try to let them do their work.
Hagel is a smart politician, knows foreign policy, and has a lot of political friends in Washington. Obama is very Presidential, and is smart enough to understand politically that Hagel's role is crucial. Who cares if the "Really Not Competent" (RNC), have any opinion at all. America has observed their opinions, politics, and policies for 8 years. Have you been impressed yet my fellow citizens?? I have not!
Bill Clinton, of course, thought his wife at State was a good move, saying, "As an American, I am thankful...."   (that she will be out of town a lot and I will be able to PARTY wooooo hooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!)

Lock up your women, Slick Willy is back!!!
We must all be aware that most of these appointments are dependent on a tete a tete with concerned individuals. Hagel may have some other plans and Obama may have more important concerns. The appointments are not over yet and remember guys there is always an element of politics in these appointments. Obama's political agenda may be represenatative of the current appointments and the PE may not have exercised all his moral aptitude yet. Let us not consider this an ineptitude for managing a political environment that is satisfied by eight years of governorship.
