Biden picks economic policy adviser

In a nod to the Left, Jared Bernstein will serve as chief economist and economic policy adviser to Vice President-elect Biden, the Obama-Biden transition team announced today.

“Jared Bernstein is an acclaimed economist, and a proven, passionate advocate for raising the incomes of middle class families," Biden said in a statement. "His expertise and background in a wide range of domestic and international economic policies will be an invaluable asset to the Obama-Biden Administration. It’s an honor to have him on my team and I look forward to his advice and counsel.”

Bernstein has been an economist at the Economic Policy Institute, a think tank that has been associated with most progressive part of the Democratic Party when it comes to economic matters -- and that's viewed as being to the left of the Brookings Institution. Bernstein also worked for Robert Reich him at the Labor Department during the Clinton years.

Most of the other economic policy advisers that have been plucked for the Obama White House and cabinet -- Larry Summers, Tim Geithner, Peter Orszag -- have come from the more moderate Robert Rubin school of the Democratic Party.

*** UPDATE *** To suggest that Bernstein is pretty much in agreement with Rubin and his disciples on what to do regarding the current economic troubles, someone close to the transition passes along this recent New York Times op-ed that Bernstein and Rubin co-wrote. What's more, the transition source says that Berstein was recommended to Vice President-elect Biden by Obama adviser Austan Goolsbee.

Brief bio on Bernstein, per the transition, after the jump:
Jared Bernstein, Chief Economist and Economic Policy Advisor to the Vice President
Jared Bernstein is an expert in the areas of federal, state and international economic policies, specifically the middle-class squeeze, income inequality and mobility, trends in employment and earnings, low-wage labor markets, poverty and international comparisons. Bernstein has been an economist at the Economic Policy Institute since 1992 and is a renowned author of several books and academic treatises on the economy and the middle class.  From 1995-1996, he served as Deputy Chief Economist for the Department of Labor under Labor Secretary Robert Reich.  Bernstein is on the Congressional Budget Office’s advisory committee and has been a contributor to the financial news station CNBC.  He has also taught at Howard University, Columbia University and New York University.  He holds a Bachelors Degree in Fine Arts from the Manhattan School of Music; a Masters Degree in Social Work from the Hunter School of Social Work; a Masters Degree in Philosophy and Ph.D. in Social Welfare from Columbia University.

I love the fact that they are bringing people in from all across the spectrum. From moderate to the ultra liberal. Obama and Biden will be receiving multiple viewpoints and can therefore develop the most intelligent and structured compromises to reconcile all points of view and potentially solve some of this nations ills. There is nothing wrong with respectful discussion of varying viewpoints, something Republicans will never understand, and why i hope they never return to the majority.
This is a facinating man. A BS in fine arts school of music, a Masters of Social Work, a PhD in Social Welfare; plus he is an econominist. A very broad background.  Clearly a bottom-up, rather than a trickle-down economist. He would be a fun person to learn from.
Can't saint Obama do anything without help ?
This sounds good

But, can you find a place for ex-Rep David Bonior ?
He was a strong progressive voice from Michigan

Also James Galbraith, a progressive economist

Please don't just give the Left 'nods'
More GOOD NEWS form Minnesota

Yes, Minnesota there IS a Santa Claus !!

'...Franken Scores: More Ballots Found In Democratic Days after it was reported that 133 ballots were missing in the Minneapolis portion of the Minnesota Senate recount, local officials in the city said they had discovered found a misplaced stack of ballots. Democratic sources in the state, meanwhile, say that this group of votes were not counted on the day of the election, meaning they will have a larger affect on the outcome of the recount.

The findings are being cheered by Al Franken's campaign not merely because they come from a deeply Democratic area of the city and promise to bolster the vote total of the Democratic challenger. But over the past few weeks, the Franken team has been arguing that the recount process -- with the election potentially decided by only dozens of votes -- must be more comprehensive and thorough.

Earlier in the week, election officials discovered more than 170 ballots in Ramsey County that, once counted, added 37 votes to Franken's total. The disappearance of 133 ballots from Minneapolis, however, has thrust both campaigns into full-on political hysteria. During a conference call on Thursday, aides to Franken argued that the disappearance of these votes would effectively throw the election to Sen. Norm Coleman.

The Coleman camp's response, meanwhile, was a bit more confused. The Senator's lawyer, Fritz Knaak, declared on Thursday that they did "not know that there are any ballots missing, and it is premature and simply irresponsible to suggest that they are."

At the same time, the local press was reporting that instead of accidentally counting 133 ballots twice on Election Day (the alternative explanation for why those votes had gone missing) local officials had determined a single envelope of ballots was in fact missing....'

The gig is UP, Norm

You were just warming the Senate seat
(and getting some free rent in the process)

Senator Franken !!

Yes, govern without your input.
Why does the Vice President need a financial adviser? Wouldn't you think that the VP being from the same party hold the same financial and economic views as the President? Why do we have to pay for two when one should be plenty ?
WOW! Who knew an economist could also have a social conscience? A lot of the real brainiacs are so consumed by numbers and markets and such that actual people seem to get lost in the mix. I'm glad this guy is on board.
Obama's team continues to do what they promised, which is to surround themselves with varying opinions in order to come up with the best solution possible. Isn't this refreshing after the last 8 dreadful years? I still get emails almost daily from the Transition team asking for my opinion on one thing or the other! I feel we got our country back on Nov. 4th!I am so looking forward to an Obama Administration.
MSierra....

St. Obama has a Cabinet of very smart people. Go back to school and take  Civics!  All Presidents (R) or (D) don't do ANYTHING without a Cabinet for some advice. No one can run an entire country alone...just like I am not sitting at my job alone.  It takes a team!
