GOP Senator: Bailout, 'ass backwards'

Posted: Wednesday, December 10, 2008 12:01 PM by Domenico Montanaro
Filed Under:

From NBC's Ken Strickland and Mike Viqueira
Republican Senator David Vitter of Louisiana, who is adamantly against an auto bailout, calls the Democratic and White House proposal "ass backwards."

He complained that it's wrong to give the automakers $15 billion worth of short-term loans, and then expect them to come up with restructuring plans.

On the floor of the U.S. Senate, Vitter said, "Well, our reaction to that is pretty simple. It think the average american would say, 'What? Isn't that putting the cart before the horse? Isn't that, to use a common phrase, 'Ass backwards?' Fifteen billion dollars and then later, after that's out the door, we'll see a detailed restructuring plan?"

Vitter dropped a another bombshell, saying he'd do everything in his power to stop the bill.

"I will use every procedural tool available to demand amendment process on the floor of the senate and to delay and block the measure as it presently stands," he said.

On the House side, it will take up the auto bailout today and likely pass it late this afternoon or evening. This bill represents their agreeement with the White House.

The senate is another issue, however. There is significant Republican opposition and 60 votes required to get it on a track toward passage.

There are only 50 Democrats at the most in this, the old Congress. The earliest procedurcal vote in the Senate would be Friday.

A weekend session looking very possible.

Please tell me people see the irony in David Vitter talking about "ass".
Vitter's hooker must not be returning his phone calls.
STOP the auto-HANDOUT!!  everyone wants to pretend it is for, or will help the economy.  They will use that money.  STOLEN FROM YOUR POCKET to continue & speed up the offshoring of US jobs!!

NO AUTO HANDOUT, no "bailout" till we see a plan that includes protecting US based MFG AT THE EXPENSE OF FORIEGN BASED CAPACITY!!
And we should listen to the guy that "got away with" HIS bad behavior (soliciting a prostitute)? I don't think so. Typical Repubs, throw money at the white collar companies, and screw the blue collar companies. Come on folks, you're all lame ducks. Just. Frickin'. Do it.
Finally! Someone finally gets it right!! Rather then give the automakers money and have them p*ss it away, and then come back begging for more, someone (Vitter) figured out that maybe the automakers should have a recovery plan BEFORE they get the money.

But I guess all this will get lost on this board because the trolls will be all over Vitter for 1) being a Republican and 2) Having had an affair.
Someone grew a set. Good for Vitter.
The Republican Senators comment on Toyota, Honda and Mercedes success in the auto market. Why are they successful - non union cost and health care legacy costs are not part of their auto costs which makes them competitive. In addition Japan and Germany support their manufacturers we don't.
Hopefully this prostitute tainted Senator from Louisiana will be kicked out from office in 2010!
Where are all the republican
american patriots? Why do they wish for the american carmakers to go bankrupt?then we will all have to buy foreign cars, just like every thing we in america is made some place else.
Is it just to break unions?if so that is rediculus.
Congress gets free health ins.,pensions etc. mayors, city workers, state workers, everyone that are taxes pay for,get free ins.so why do people always blame union employes for all the problems?
maybe we should blame the heads of companys, who make millions.
Vetter has some legitimate reservations. I too question whether the bail-out will work. Leaving one million plus workers without a job isn't very politically sound.  Maybe Ford can make it, but you may want to "take your chevy to the levy"...and leave it, "cause the levy was dry. And good ol boys are drinking whiskey and rye. This will be the day that they die." The good ol boys are the CEO's.
I hope the people write down these names and vote every one of these jerks out of office when they come up for re-election. They are not supporting the country, they are not supporting the will of the people as evidenced by the poll that has been done by NBC and WSJ and posted right here at FR. It has been stated numerous times no one will buy a car from a company in bankruptcy.
Shelby is just a liar and a jerk. His own state has companies in it that have gotten all kinds of Government money to stay there and come there. Why isn't he outraged over that??
The only thing they want is to break the union. They admitted yesterday that the wages made by the foreign car makers are now more than the union workers, so their outrage over that is not even valid anymore. Saying the pension costs are out of line is not a good argument either. The only difference is because the Big 3 plans have been around for so long, if the foreign car makers had been here as long their pension plans would be just as much. It's all in how it is figured, but if you compare apples to apples, there is no difference except one is union, one isn't. That's all it comes down too, the Republican's want to break the union, just like always, so they will try to filibuster this bill, taking a chance on putting 3 million people out of work, and throwing this country into a depression. What this would do to the economy would be devastating.
The auto makers asked for 34 Billion to keep their heads afloat. Now Congress is perhaps willing to give them 15 Billlion. Although realizing that Ford has dropped out of this bail out request triad, do people really understand what 15 Billion will do for GM and Chrysler regarding restructuring, re-tooling and making those changes necessary to remain competitve and to be successful in this global competition for an energy efficient automobile? Nothing. Nothing at all. Check out the figures that each is spending every month just to stay in business under their current structure and you will understand. The 15 Billion would be quickly burned away by paying current payrolls, maintaining some current production lines and just maintaining the status quo. 15 Billion is a very small drop in the bucket compared to what would be needed for GM and Chrysler to become viable and successful operations. Either give them what would be required (which would be four or five times the proposed 15 Billion) so that they could restructure and turn around their business, or don't give them a damn dime. The 15 Billion will be gone in a flash and they would both be back very shortly for more, much more.
Why don't all the
republican's take a raise cut like the rest of the country.....It would be interesting to see how they like the trickled down effect.  I believe out country would run a lot better if we got rid of all the greedy republican...all they care about is how much money they can get under the table.
I would let them fall on their face and also the Unions for being so greedy. I was wondering if i beg and plead will i get a bailout.
Expect Republicans to try and block the bail out
Thye want to kill the UAWw
Pretty transparent

DON'T Give Republicans veto power over economic legislation
Either now, or when Obama gets into power

The Republicans talked about a 'nuclear option' of abolishing the filibuster when they had the Senate majority
Maybe it is time to abolish the filibuster
It can be done with a majority vote

As far as 'ass backwards' goes....
Sen Vitter is the 'Family Values' Senator form La.
The 'Family Values' Senator who had an adulterous sexual affair with a hooker (heart of gold, optional)

Some Family values, huh ?
Protecting foriegn companies yet claiming that we do not want to be dependent on foriegn oil is double standard.
The senators opposing the emergency loan to the Auto makers simply want to protect the foriegn auto companies in their respective states.
Shelby and his cohorts all have ulterior motives.  The southern boys have foreign car manufacturers in their states and are posturing for them.  They say "I don't want anyone to lose their job", who are they kidding?  They couldn't care less.  Once again it's all about them.

When the house upheld the passing of the tarp bill, then added some pork, then passed it, who added the pork and then agreed to the bill?  And,  as we all know,  the banks that got the money, whether they needed it or not, with barely any stipulations, are not doing what they should be doing with the money.

I would like to see the American auto industry survive.  They have been behind the eight ball in terms of new innovation, but they have also been victims, to some extent, of the economic crisis we are all facing.  It won't matter though, if they survive, if the banks and lines of credit are not available to G.Q. Public to be able to buy those vehicles, along with other goods and services.
Yes, Obama has lots to say, and says it well, when he's reading from a script. Yesterday the corruption he came from in Illinois bit him in the butt. He took one question. One. And he lied. Axelrod said in no uncertain terms back in November that Obama had been working with Blagojevich on filling the Senate position. Now, all of sudden, that conversation never took place? That's an outright lie. For a man (Obama) that has spoken out on corruption of government at the national level, Obama has said nothing about the corruption in his home state. There is a reason for that, he's part of it. He didn't get to where is today without being part of the pay-to-play culture in that state. No one gets to move up politically in Illinois unless the Democratic Machine says so. Obama payed his dues. Now it's up to the media to explain what those dues were. Somehow I don't think the media is up to the task.
All In The Family (Sent Wednesday, December 10, 2008 9:41 AM)

All In The Family you hit the nail right on the head.

The problem with the Obama supporters and the media who have made Obama out to be more than what he is, is that they refuse to believe that even though Obama is a product of the corrupt Illinois environment, that he could be anything but sqeaky clean.

You don't go from being a Illinois state Senator to becoming a United States States Senator to becoming President of the United States in a little over four years unless you have connections with, and have associated with corrupt people.

In February Obama said that he may be skinny but he's tough and he's from Chicago where they know how to play politics.

Why would Axlerod have said that Obama and Blagojevich had talked if he didn't know one way or the other.  A normal person would have said, I have no idea.  But Axelrod didn't say he had no idea, instead he said as a "matter of fact" that Obama and Blagojevich had talked to each other about Obama's Senate seat and now Axlerod has issued a statement saying he was "Mistaken."  Mistaken my foot!  Axlerod has fallen on the sword and taken one for the team on this one and Obama has lied as he has done numerous times before.

People in this country had better wake up and realize that Obama is no saint and time will expose ALL of his connections and the corruption that he has been a part of and how he has gotten to where he is today.

As the Blagojevich investation proceeds, watch and see how many people in the Obama camp/administration start dropping like flies in an attempt to protect Obama from having his Presidential hopes jepordized.
whats ass backwards is giving the money to wall street, no strings attached!  Here we are faced w/ a huge problem that could wreak havoc on American Manufacturing...but hey, what the hell, lets just throw millions of people out of a job - after all, they are "just blue collared workers".  WAKE UP PEOPLE!  This bailout is imperative to not only the economy, but this country.  GET IT DONE!
So Ford is going to pass on needing a bail-out.  Smart move on Ford's part. Now the question is, should GM be bailed out?  Or a better question, "Does the government want to buy an auto company?  I would think not.
Go Senator Vitter!

There's no reason that my tax dollars should go to bailout the Vampires at the UAW.

I hope this bill dies the death it deserves.
I do not know why they have to use slang when they
explain their ideals. They could have said it was a backwarded ideal. But to be cute or just plain dumb
they come before the American people and use language
some of Americans do  not use and do not think it
is useful.
I believe we have to do something to maintain the jobs of the average tax payers who work for these and other companies.  But the company has to take there responsibility, and remanage their priorities, for the sake of all tax-payers and the people not getting wealthy due to over pay.
Well, Vitter would certainly know it when he sees it.
Vitter of the prostitute fame has no understanding of the job loss impact on our economy.  You played up the Illinois situation as putting forth the GOP as the non corrupt party. Giving Vitter his comments the play you have should also state his own corruption and ethics problems
What's really ass backwards is giving the automakers a bridge loan when the real and true problem is Americans can't afford to buy cars right now. It's that simple. Put that money into the economy and let it rip.
Ironic use of the "Ass" word from Vitter.
Paging Romney... plz help now!!!
Ughhh!  This is so frustrating.  The reason they are doing it this way is to keep them from failing before they have a chance to restructure.  Does Senator Vitter want to tell a million Americans they are out of a job.  Just do the right thing for goodness sake.  I can't wait until we have real leadership in Washington.  But first we have to somehow survive this lame duck bull crap.
You'd think that a senator who got caught in the DC madam scandal, and who had even more embarrassing details come out in the press back home after that scandal broke (hint: diapers were involved), you'd think someone like that would have the good sense not to use the word 'ass' on the Senate floor.  or maybe not.
So how much would it cost taxpayers not to bail out the Big 3 Automakers? Is the traditional method of paying unemployment benefits, food stamps and welfare the Ass forward way to handle an industry collapse? Can you believe how these guys play politics with people’s lives?
GM will not survive! regardless! (.!)
But does anyone have it on tape!?
We should listen long and hard to the stalwart Bush supporters, considering the excellent job they've done up to now.
So Crusading David Vitter says "A$$ Backwards", huh? Well, I am not going to touch that with an adult diaper!
Thank you Senator Vitter. This whole thing has been a joke.
With all the loans congress in giving up to bail corporations out, are they getting a return on their "investment"? And since this is taxpayer monies, shouldn't we get a dividend check?
Let me see if I've got this right. We can approve $700 billion in aid to a bunch of white collar pencil pushers who produce no tangible product, but Vitter is going to fight tooth and nail against a mere 15 billion to save thousands of blue collar jobs that actually produce physical products here in America? Where's the disconnect? At this stage of the game, Republicans should be picking their battles very carefully. Undermining the job security of America's working class does not seem like a good battle.
Good for Senator Vitter.  We already made the mistake of sending money out the door with no accountability once.  This time, make sure we know how it's going to be spent!
My God, I can't believe it!  I actually agree with a Republican!
Well it SOUNDS noble of Vitter, but I'm curious if he bailed out the banks and Wall Street.  Giving banks all the money without restrictions and walking away from the automakers and all their employees seems pretty hypocritical.

I do agree that the automakers absolutely MUST have a plan in place for restructuring, but how quickly can the plan be put together?  Do we let one or two of them go under while they work on a plan?  Catch 22.  I'm just thinking of the impact on the entire economy if they go down.
Hey Vitter - it was hypocritical and immoral of you to cheat on your wife and break the law by paying prostitutes too.

Gads, Democrat or Republican, these asses need to crawl under rocks once they've lost all credibility.
Given his record with prostitutes I would think he should stay away from expressions like ass-backwards.
The same David Vitter who carried on with call girls?

The same David Vitter whose wife stood by him after the call girl scandal even though she had critized Hillary Clinton for not leaving Bill Clinton?

Why is this man still in the US Senate - maybe because only voters in a southern / family values state would be stupid enough to stand for this? You know as long as he continues to stand against a woman's right to choose and gay rights....

Ugh -
I guess Vitter would rather use the $15billion to bail out hookers.
When we go into a depression due to the huge unemployment caused because the auto makers go bankrupt please talk to Mr. Vitter. He will, I am sure have some explanations for us. He will need to explain how and where those people will find work. He will need to explain where our military vehicles will be built if we get into a major war. He will need to take responsibility and be held accountable for his lack of cooperation with the leadership of his and the other party. It is people like Vitter that have been the most instrumental in getting us into the current mess.
Senator David Vitter of Louisiana - When the next hurricane comes and you are twelve feet underwater, please do not ask for federal assistance. I'd prefer to spend my tax dollars helping the working middle class rather than "bail" you out.  This is a loan to the automakers!
Thank God still some sensible folks who still believe in American Freedom!!!!!
why is it taking an hour and 15 minutes to get a comment posted
These Senators who are Anti-American Industry SHOULD ALL LOSE THERE JOBS. I'm Tired of people who only are against this bailout because they have Foreign Automakers in their States.

AS A REPUBLICAN I SAY FIRE EVERY SINGLE SENATOR WHO VOTES AGAINST AMERICAN INDUSTRY!
