A law enforcement official confirms that the person referred to in the federal criminal complaint against Gov. Rod Blagojevich as "Candidate 5" is Congressman Jesse Jackson Jr

However, federal officials caution that they have no evidence, other than statements made by Blagojevich, about whether Candidate 5 actually made any improper approaches to the governor. No conversations with Candidate 5 were ever picked up on any of the bugs or wiretaps.

Video: NBC News has confirmed that Jesse Jackson, Jr. has been named as Blagojevich's 'Candidate 5.' NBC's Pete Williams reports.

Jackson's office put out a brief statement, quoting him as follows: "Since the federal investigation of the governor is ongoing, it would be inappropriate for me to comment beyond my initial statement.  However, I reject and denounce pay-to-play politics and have no involvement whatsoever in any wrongdoing. I won't hesitate to cooperate fully and completely with the federal government's investigation."

According to the criminal complaint, on Oct. 31st, Blagojevich was overheard saying of Candidate 5, "We were approached 'pay to play,' that, you know, he'd raise me 500 grand. An emissary came. Then the other guy would raise a million, if I made him a senator."

But federal officials say the recordings did not pick up any conversations with Candidate 5 or the emissary. It's important to note that this is a third-hand statement: Blagovich is repeating what he says was the emissary's description of what Candidate 5 said.

Nonetheless, investigators are reaching out to all the figures mentioned in the criminal complaint, including Candidate 5, to learn more about what happened.

Well...there's one candidate who's not getting the seat.
Say it ain't so! I hope JJ, Jr. was working with the Feds on this one. If not, it will be very disappointing. He had (hopefully has) a brilliant future ahead of him.
Don't jump to conclusions - who knows what really happened. Warren Buffet was also mentioned and I HIGHLY doubt that he had any knowledge of being in that conversation. Also, keep in mind this happened the day after JJ, Jr. and Blago had a 90 minute meeting - hmmmm??? Keep an open mind.
Whould thunk it? LOL
and people are actually surprised when only about 30% of the population votes.
What can I say?  Jess Jr., Rod B., and B. Obama are each products of the Chicago political cesspool.
I would think Candidate #5 would be in more trouble than the guv'na. There's always the possibility this is a made up story. But if it's not, say good night #5.

But we just don't know yet.
so who are the other 4??
Does this surprise anyone?
I know, innocent until proven guilty.  But I think the law enforcement official is telling the truth.  If it is true, Jesse Jackson Jr. might as well take a long walk off a short plank.
I have no doubt that the governor will name whatever name comes to mind in an attempt to make a deal with the attorney general's office.  From this point on, I hope that the investigators will take, with a large grain of salt, any accusations that a corrupt governor levels against anyone and everyone in order to escape any well-deserved punishment.
haha Jackson 5...how convenient
what about the conversation they had on his first day of office.  he asked "how do you sell a bike to a blind man and get away with it?"  and the number said "tell him its the law and he never saw me."
Jesse Jackson Jr. implicated in the Blagojevich debacle...why am I not surprised?  How much do you want to bet his daddy intervened and threatened to call Gov. Blagojevich a racist if Junior wasn't accepted at the lowest possible bid price?
Who would have guessed J.J.Jr.?
This is so sad mostly because I live in Illinois and am tired of the problems with the Governor's position.  It seems that this man is so greedy and willing to do anything to further his position.  It's horrible.

He and his wife should see how people are living on $40,000 a year with a family without trying to take from others.

If they want to make more money, work at something for real, not try to get some sort of do-nothing job.  He is a great example of what "not" to do for every situation.

We are sad here in Illinois...
No surprise here on any front - I wouldn't be surprised if Daley himself was one of the contestants on "Are You Corrupt Enough to be An Illinois Politician?"
I sure think they "jumped the gun" with this and in the end the gov. may be aquited with flimsy evidence "3-hand". I think more and more this is for political PR propaganda.
And we have the nerve to point our finger at other nations when we hear about corruption there?
This smells bad.
Like farther like son
I believe it.  I was born and raised in Chicago area.  My parents were into politics way back in the 50's.  I saw then what pollitics was all about.  I'm sorry to see that it hasn't changed much.  The worst part of it is that this jerk doesn't see that he has done anything wrong!  Amazing!!  Personally, I don't think a governor should have that much power to "pick" someone to fill the Senator's seat.  This should be done by special election ALWAYS!
Keep corruption OUT of it.  These corrupt politicians should spend some time in the very jails they are supposed to be supporting.  Where is the justice?  Obviously not with him.  He needs to be impeached or what ever they do to Govenors.  What a disgrace!
AND..... WHO ARE 1-4??
And we all know that whatever Blagojevich says is 100 percent true and trustworthy.  If he said JJ approached him, then we can absolutely believe he did.  Let it all shake out before condemning anyone who was in the running.
I can't recall the last time I considered JJ to be an above-the-table kind of guy.  He covets power, but the voters have rejected this uber-racist hypocrite repeatedly. I'd hardly be surprised if he's trying to buy his way past the democratic process.
Sounds like the Governor has some serious issues. Although I am certain he did not act alone, some of his statements and how he behaved makes it appear that he is somewhat delusional. Amazing how he thought he could say and do anything. His brazen behavior was out in the open, yet the individuals who were going to pay are not as easily identified. How long before some type of mental incompetance plea is filed?
As much as we'd like to believe that there honest politicians out there, we all know that is wishful thinking.  The only difference in this story is that this one relates to Obama's State elevating it to a higher level.  I think we are all aware that politics is riddled with backroom deals and quid pro quo.  No one really believes that HRC is Obama's heart of heart's choice for SOS.  Do they?  Be real.  We also know that many of our current pols have their offices because the last guy was caught being corrupt (think Palin).  The system is rife with corruption and influence peddaling.  The trick is to avoid the bright light of day.  I have often wondered how it was that McCain got the nomination and came back from the political dead.  I think there was some payback in that nomination, but we'll likely never know the truth.  We all know that politics is a system of people owing and remembering people once you arrive in office.
As I understand it, it is not illegal in Illinois to promise to raise campaign money for someone.  As a result, this kind of promise in Chicago is considered normal and okay, while it stinks to high heaven just about anywhere else.  JJ may not have done anything wrong even if he did do this.
JJ Jr potentially involved in a political scandal? With lawbreaking involved?  Hard to believe: I'm shocked, SHOCKED I tell you...
