Rush backs Jackson for Obama seat

Posted: Thursday, December 11, 2008 4:28 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC’s Cherelle Kantey
Congressman Bobby Rush (D-IL) said he thinks Jesse Jackson Jr. is still the best candidate to succeed Obama in the Senate, despite the cloud around him due to the Blagojevich investigation.

“He has really all the capacity, the talents and skills,” Rush said in an interview with MSNBC’s Norah O’Donnell. “He would be … in line with the great U.S. senators that Illinois has produced in the past.”

Video: Ill. Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. calls for Gov. Rod Blagojevich to resign from his position immediately after being arrested Tuesday, Jackson insisted that he had no knowledge of any wrongdoing.

Rush said he believes Jackson is being truthful when he says he had nothing to do with a scheme to purchase the vacant senate seat for nearly a half million dollars.

“I don't believe that Jesse Jackson Jr. was in any way culpable or that he participated in any acts that would be unlawful,” Rush said.

Rush, who once defeated Obama who challenged the former Black Panther for his congressional seat, said the controversy surrounding Blagojevich should not have any impact on whether Jesse Jackson Jr. gets the seat.

“There was enormous speculation, widespread speculation that candidate No. 5 was Jesse Jackson Jr.,” Rush said. “However … I believe Jesse Jackson Jr., and I stand behind his statements.”

I think that those of us who have not sinned, have the privilege to cast the first stone of judgement at Obama.

I hope, late at night, when you are doing bad things, and know one is around to see you...that there isn't a hidden video camera...or hidden microphone...in an undisclosed location to witness your sleazy little, secret crimes.

Just because no one is there with you...doesn't mean your clean of wrong doing!!!
Many people don't like the Jackson Tribe; yet, whenever they are in trouble or need they run to the Jacksons. Ironic!

=========================================

Dear Governor Blagojevich,

I have always respected you and always liked you as a Governor, but now comes the time that you must step down and resign. You owe that to the citizens of Illinois to seek medical help for your bipolar disorders and don't be ashamed to seek medical attention so that one day I pray you may come back into society in a state of mind that is acceptable to the citizens of Illinois. May God bless you and your family and forgive you for the injustices that you afflicted upon the state.

if a person is innocent they should be able to pursue the position of their choice. jackson has done nothing wrong. he isn't tainted as the media is trying to suggest just because hi was mentioned as candidate number 5.

you the media have no right to take this good mans career ambitions from him. the media presumes they know what we think. this years elections proves they don't have a read on the heartbeat of america.

mr. jackson and anyone else that the mad cap governor of illinois may mention that are innocent of wrong doing should be free to pursue their goals without the media making a story out of nothing for the sake of yellow journalism.

mr. jacksons record speaks for itself. he is not his father and guilt by association is small and petty. it is another example of bad and ugly politics in america supported by media trying to drive a story.
Yeah, he also believes Bill Clinton was telling the truth about Monica!  With dumbos like this, no wonder Illinois is the political cesspool that it is.
Too little, too late from 1600 Pensylvania Avenue. They need to just shut up and let the adults handle this one.
eagle1776

I can't believe it! Eagle went stupid too! He joined another idiot making the ridiculous statement using the word Adult. Yet again, a parody of we are the champions that nears ignorance. Eagle, if you jawillie or Eric are related, it would not be a suprise to the readers here. You keep all of the readers laughing at your attempts to communicate intelligently. We tune in for the comedy. Cheers!
Regardless of what Rush thinks, Jesse Jackson Jr. has been stained with this and we Illinoisans will not stand for a Senator who may have attempted to purchase the office.  Jackson should probably stay in his current position, and if he is interested in the Senate seat, run for it in the next election.

I am concerned that the legitimacy of the seat has been damaged -- first that must be restored, <i>then</i> we can worry about restoring Jackson.

Jesse Jackson, Jr. is an extremely capable, bright, and arrogant politician.  So, he gets some comeuppance here which can't hurt.

What can hurt is that everyone who legitimately showed interest in this senatorial opening will be tarred with the sticky goo of Illinois' goof-ball governor.

The last honest person to run for the office of governor in the state was Glen Poshard, a downstate Democrat who wouldn't play ball with Chicago.

If the Democrats in Illinois want to show some cred, appoint Poshard to fill out Obama's term.  He is the last Democrat standing in Illinois who has nada to do with the cretin presently occupying the Governor's office.

Obama , nor his organization, had little to do with Blogojevich before, during, and after the presidential campaign, but his silence when he could have done something about Blagojevich may come back to haunt him.

But not so much. We need him too badly now.

Repugs are going to have to wait for another BJ in the WH.

With Obama, it is not going to happen.

Whether Jr is guilty or not, he should step aside for the good of Illinois' citizens.  He already has a seat as a represenative let him be happy with that for now.
IIf Jackson was guilty, then why did Prosecutor Fitzgerald say JJjr. was not a target. I believe Prosecutor Fitzgerald and Jessie Jackson Jr. More importantly, Jessie Jackson Jr. doesn't has a very comfortable relationship with Blago, the two faced Psycho. Therefore, Jessie Jackson Jr has earned his stripes. Chicago is not the Rat-tat-tat Al Capone City people envision. Jessie Jackson Jr would strike the balance in the Senate. Jessie Jackson Jr shares the vision of working with the people; the same as President Elect Obama.

If you really really want to talk about thugs; start with G. w. Bush and his invasion and thievery; including constitutional rights of US, we the American
My mom says that this happening to him is Karma. When his dad was in trouble when he said that thing about Obama, he acted like Jesse Jackson wasn't his daddy. The bible does say honor thy mother and father. Maybe it's for the best in long run.. His voiceis to squeaky for my taste anyway...
It just doesn't stop with these guys from Chicago! Fool you once. Fool you twice. Fool you three times. It doesn't matter to the ChiTown boys and girls, they just keep at it, because, well, to them we're the fools!

These miserable excuses for politicians from Chicago need to be shown the door! None of them, including Obama, is worth the ink to print this message. The boldness they show, even when a shining light is put on their corruption, is that of a sociopath.

They just don't get it!!

Sorry DemocRats. You're little power plays of Senate appointments has just ran out of steam in Illinois. Everyone is now clued into your little gag. Open elections, and letting the People vote is the way to fill these spots now. You think the Governors of Delaware and New York aren't doing their little horse trading for those Senate openings? This facade Democrats are pulling with these appointments has now come to the end of line.
Oh for heavens sake you people, grow a set! All this "Oh he's innocent until proven guilty" and "He's such a good man" and "Those who haven't sinned should cast the first stone", please, cry me a river!! These pols in Illinois are the biggest crooks in the country. The run politics in Illinois like the mob runs it's operations. They are the mob for heavens sake!

Unless Jesse Jackson Jr. or a close staff member is heard offering money for the position he should be considered for the position.

So far this is about an elected official wanting to solicit money not anyone offering it. That would change the dynamics but so far it's only the governor's greed on display.
Bobby Rush. Founder of the Black Panther organization, yet another terrorist group.

A Bobby Rush quote: "Barack Obama went to Harvard and became an educated fool. Barack is a person who read about the civil-rights protests and thinks he knows all about it." - said in 2000 when Rush defeated Obama for a House of Reps seat.
i am really amazed at ms. roman and midwest mom. mr. jackson has not attempted to by this senate seat. mr. fitzgerald has already said mr. jackson is not a target in the investigation.

why are we so quick to condemn someone if they are not guilty? can there be other reasons that the door must be closed on this gentleman? the seat is not tainted by mr. jackson. he has not bought any illegality upon the attempt to acquire the position.

if someone came to your job and said you stole something yet it is not true, should you be terminated? is it possible the opinions you are rendering are because you don't like mr. jackson?

i would ask this question no matter who name was mentioned as candidate #5 or 1,2,3 or 4.

just searching for true reasoning as two you both qualifying your judgement upon mr .jackson considering he isn't guilty of breaking not one law or wrong doing.

--------------

Jesse Juniors lawyer said he wasn't a target. Fitzgerald said Junior wasn't part of the criminal notice that was issued to Blagojevich.

Why do you people continue to worship these crooks?
sorry to disagree with your mom nicole m, boston ma. what jj, jr. said to his dad was the right thing to say at that time. junior did not dishonor his father in anyway. we can't use the bible to justify us being wrong on our judgement of others.

i think you can find references in the bible that would justify juniors admonishment of his dad when you consider right and wrong.
Wow, you guys are brutal, which I really don't understand.  First of all, I disagree with Bush on, well, pretty much everything, and I do feel that he will go down in history as one of the worst Presidents we have ever had.  With that said, all I am saying is that political dissent is actually very healthy for democracy, which I guess others (ahem, Obama supporters) pretty much disagree with.  I do plenty of good for my community...I'm a new lawyer and as soon as I get my student debt under control, I fully intend to work in public service (perhaps in the public health sector, which will enable me to utilize my Master's degree).

So, I don't really appreciate the personal attacks, which I guess were leveled against me simply because I am not necessarily singing Obama's praises on here.  I'm also not criticizing him either, but I guess that's beside the point.  And for the person who asked how my comment was relevant to the FR blog entry, I can only assume that you failed to read my opening line (which stated that my comment was meant for the previous blog entry).

I really don't understand how Obama supporters can be so divisive...I mean, Obama's message was about one America.  That's something I'd like to see, but reading these comments, I don't hold out much hope.

And I am in no way, shape, or form a "troll".  I was merely expressing an opinion, which is the same thing that you all do on here all day, every day.  I have better things to do with my time than purposely agitate FR readers.
are you that blind: did you see the listing of the most corrupt cities in america today? in one illinois was rated 6 and another illinois was 18. the metrics were different for each rating, but the fact is illinois is not the most corrupt state in the u.s.

those of you that want to judge someone guilty remember that the ag (fitzgerald) has said junior has done no wrong.

i ask this one question. what if you were accussed of something you didn't do and it cost you something that you worked hard for (let's say your job)?

what if you were denied your rights and put in jail with out a day in court? should we now stop being america? is not our rights within the constitution for everyone not just us when we think we need it for ourselves?

as a vet i believe in these constituional rights that some seem to be able to dismiss so easily. the people who die for this country are shedding and have shed their blood for those very rights.

these constitutional rights apply to all americans no matter if it is a trashman, teacher, nurse, cashier or politician. it is one of the things that make us great.

it is not a liberal, conservative or centrist value. it is an american value that we all have as citizens of this great country.

the constitutional rights we have are what makes this the greatest country on earth.

I don't like the horse trading either. It looks too much like the work of Republicans.

Special elections with whoever wants the job on the ballot. No primary. Just whoever gets the most votes wins.
Hmm, I was just thinking. Why would Limbaugh care?
Oh please.....google Jackson plus Budweiser. See how they were going to boycott Budweiser if the Jackson sons couldn't get exclusive distributorship.

I have said in the past to anyone not living in Chicago but no one cared about Chicago politics during the campaign. The key is to know your candidate by seeing the local politics that he or she comes from. The apple usually doesn't fall far from the tree.
All of you are talking like you know something!  This is not about innocent until proven guilty for anyone except Blagojevich!  Not one charge has been filed against Jackson, Obama or anyone else for that matter!  Everything else is just speculation at this point.  No one absolutely KNOWS anything.  Only the prosecutor and his staff have heard all of the tapes.  All of the quotes from the tapes and everything else we are being fed is in little snippets that only serve to fill up the news hour of the TV news anchor or pundit feeding it to us.  Gain some perspective and some independent thought and not just rely on Olbermann's or Hannity's views.  Wait until you have the facts!  It's not the complaint that is "tainting" anyone...its all of the unfounded speculation and conjecture being spewed by the "news" and we are all buying into it!  We only think Chicago politicians are all corrupt because the media keeps running down the list of corrupt politicians.  They don't run down the list of those who aren't corrupt, and I guarantee you that list is longer!  Chicago isn't the only state with a corrupt governor, senator or congressman.  I'm originally from CT and our old governor is in jail too!  So, just relax and wait for the facts and THEN we can make decisions based something real and not just what might be.
The good news is that the Repubs probably won't have a choice in who gets picked (naaaa-naaaa).
I see the devil is busy again: OK, first we are have sinners and the only perfect person who has walked this earth is Jesus Christ. Therefore, no on can throw stones. Apparently, blagojevich is touched and not by no Angel to held this type of conversation over the phone. This is his problems and mistakes; why should Jesse Jackson Jr. and Obama have to share in his blame. When Jesse Jackson Jr. didn't agree with his father's comments, does not mean he don't honor his father. Really it hasn't anything to do with honor mother and father. We all have only one father, who is God. Jesse Jackson did not dishonor his daddy by being embarassed by his comment. The fact remains Jesse Jackson Jr. is a fine man; and he has earned his position to be elected as Senator. There is no reason why he shouldn't take it, he would know he has to watch his step because people are watching. I beleive he would be a great senator from ILL, he needs the chance to prove himself. He should be held back just because of his father or the current governor. It is power that corrupts an individual and Blagojevich knew he has the power to elect a senator to replace Obama. And he went crazy with that power. Why should Jesse Jackson Jr. be held accountable? Is this just because the Republicans don't want another Democrat to take Obama's place? That is really what it is all about, think about! Again, there is power issue with the republicans, they want to run every thing, just like they have been running everything into the ground for the past 8 years.
Cong. Rush is exactly right.  Cong.Jesse Jackson Jr. is a good man who should be seriously considered for Senator of Illinois.  My husband, a retired College Prof. is ticked as can be because Jackson, Jr. may lose out because of this selflsh Gov.  Not all people in Illinois are that unscrupulous.  We know we worked in politics from 1970 to 1995.  We agree with Obama's claim that some people really do get involved for public service
I think that those of us who have not sinned, have the privilege to cast the first stone of judgement at Bush.

"Bipartisan Report: Rumsfeld Responsible for Detainee Abuse
Senate Committee Finds Officials Made Decisions That Led to Offenses Against Prisoners," washingtonpost.com 12/11/08. while the msm has been obsessed the last two days with the illinois gov., this report has received absolutely no coverage - not on hardball, not on countdown, not on rachael's. while one can understand this latest scandal, the bipartisan report affects each of our safety, security, moral authority and military. deeply disappointed.
I heard of a guy from my frat from NIU in Dekalb Il who ran for a IL Senate seat as a republican. I heard that he wanted it because he believed in the republican platform and thought he could bring in a large black vote to republicans since he was black, a college athlete, successful etc. It could also be said that he wanted it because the job paid well, had a good retirement plan and he could get status to improve his investment business, with out having a 9 to 5. I don't know which was the correct reason. He graduated about 13 to 15 years before me. From what I know about him he is not a bad guy, but he may not have the same intentions I think Obama has. Quid pro Quo is a part of politics unless you finance your own run or can get the kind of stardom that obama got in order to run for senate. I'm from a little north of chicago, and you just don't see people that have ties to big money or old money run for office. Its still one of the great towns in the US, but the politics can be 'smash mouth'. the people that do run have to deal with tough people. Ram emanuel is probably a tough politician because the 5th will make you one.

But I also remember Simon before he retired and parents of my friends saying that he was a good man. Mayor Dailey seems to be a stand up guy and has done a good job. And Sen Durbin is one of those quiet leaders that is more interested in results than attention, and probably should be governor (he maybe should have been president if there was no Obama). If Jackson Jr. is evolved in this stuff them light him up, we can't have that. but until the proof of crimes surfaces i think we should give him the benefit of the doubt. His name may make him more prone to the fact that he will have to walk a straighter line than other people. Blago represents a part of chicago, not the best part or the largest part. Its a tough town, with hard working people that demand straight talk and are more concerned about results of ideology, than just happy talk about ideology. I don't see obama being envolved in any of this. I get the feeling he would not run for office if he had to do a lot of that stuff. he doesn't have a lot of patience for looking bad and losing political capital that would hender him getting things passed.

Il may need a different kind of person to run for office. Emauel seems like good people. and Durbin, Daily, Obama (even though his a transplant) seem to be closer to lincoln than many others. But if illinois really wants the best people, give them free air time during the special election so that the people can decide from the best ideas. But also lets not have witch hunts because a governor knew a senator and a congressman knew a state senator. we should only get judgemental on the facts of wrong doing, not on the ghost of voter fraud and mob connections.
Having once lived in Illinois, I have seen a long history of distinguished and less than distinguished politicians. From my viewpoint both Barack Obama and Jesse Jackson, Jr. are public servants of the highest quality. It is not clear if Jesse Jackson, Jr. would have been able to successfully run for the Senate statewide in two years. That concern may be a reason not to select him as Obama's successor, but it would be a shame if he were tarred with the Blagojevich brush.
The Illinois political machine is still economically intact, and continuing policies of corruption at all state levels. The Holder Justice Department, may very well be looking into the Illinois political machine next year. I do not believe Obama is going to let this machine run wild next year in Illinois. The whole "Screwjevich" corruption has made Obama very angry, and a lot of politicians in Illinois will be paying a high price legally. Good luck Illinios politicians?? Your going to need all the luck you can get next year! That is fact!
if obama is in on this .all democracts should be put in jail.in illinois
I think that those of us who have not sinned, have the privilege to cast the first stone of judgement at Bush.

this is just the way the undercover racist play their cards and now they will discredit me for pointing it out. and obama would not be so presured about all this if he were not of color. i hate to even think these thoughts but history is hard to forget and zebras dont change there strips even if jackson was involved that must be how they play the game in washington polotics that why this country is in the condition its in when there are homeless and minimum wage is under ten dollars an hour all polotians should be ashamed when they cash their checks and wall street or the automakers should not get a bailout everyone needs to wake up........
All these people are crooks and Obama is no different and he is taking the Illinois corrupt culture to the white house. Obama will replace the old staff with new people who are either equally or exceedingly more corrupt than the previous administration. Goodluck America to your change. Change for the worse. I will not be surprised if these administration will sell your future to the highest bidder. You will become like a third world country where you can not do anything unless you have grease money to get things moving. Everything will be for sale especially favors as demonstrated by the Illinois governor. Just ask the Clintons who are very well adept at this kind of things and especially the president elect. And do not give excuses like throw the first stones if you have not sinned, because I will not hesitate to throw the first stones to these greedy idiots for they are the parasites of our society and will bring the downfall of the USA.
This is what is going to bring down cable news.  Believe it or not there is more going on than this scandal.  I would like to ask the meida where was they the last 8 years.  They just let things slide now all you can hear is what Obama should say and hasn't said.  Hello out there the economy is taking a dump and all that I hear about on cable news is the Govenor in Illinois.  Obama has asked him to step down now get over and get on with the important things.
Why would you all think Illinois is the most corrupt.  Let's look at the reality people.  Politicians in every state have baggage.  Last night Chris had a pole and believe it or not North Dakota was #1 on the list of corrupt states!  I don't even know who their governor  is.  I feel it's real unfortunate for the people of Illinois right now. Remember the Clinton scandal. And look whos at the helm of our country right now.  In my mind him and the Dick, two of the most corrupt people in politics.  Someone mentioned arrogance.  We have been living with the most arrogant SOB running this country for the last 8 years.  To me Blago seems trivial compared to those 2.  Blago and wife are 2 power hungry people who got caught. There is always consequences for our actions.  I worry George and Dick won't get theirs tho.  Just thinking.....
We are confusing two issues. Legal rights and moral obligations of those whom we elect. The issues surroiunding the Illinois senate seat relate to the latter. For this reason, the murkiness of Representative Jackson's relationships with the Illinois govenor, coupled with the history of Ill politics, should cause Jackson to recluse himself for the current appointment process.
Too Bad that Jesse Jr. is black.  If he were white, all the MSM print politico's and cable news doughboys would be screaming that he was being unfairly  smeared.
It is amazing the amount of "debate and corruption" pver Sarah Palin's clothing verses the real corruption in Chicago with the Gov and even with Obama's past. Just like it will be Republicans fault that the bail out did not go through for the auto makers. But truth is the Auto makers CEO's would NOT give up a pay increases and bonus's for themselves.

There must be an election to get Obama's seat. It's the fair way. Or is "the fair way" not in the Democratic dictionary?
FR, you DO know there's another, more famous "Rush" out there don't you? My first thought in reading your headline was that Rush Limbaugh had spoken up for JJ Jr, and I thought THAT would the kiss of death.

Personally, I'm waiting for some actual FACTS to come out before making up my mind, rather than just going with the default "all Illinois pols are crooks." That's too easy, and doesn't require any brainpower.
Note to Are you that Blind?!?  -- For the sake of defendents everywhere, I hope you don't ever serve on a jury if you can't suspend your willingness to throw stones any better than this.
