First thoughts: Bailout crashes and burns

*** Bailout crashes and burns: The $14 billion auto bailout collapsed in the Senate last night after supporters were unable to get the 60 votes needed to clear a filibuster; the cloture vote was 52-35. In some ways, the failure said less about party politics and more about geography. Ten Republicans voted to invoke cloture and move the legislation forward (Bond, Brownback, Collins, Dole, Domenici, Lugar, Snowe, Specter, Voinovich, Warner). Four Democrats voted against it (Baucus, Lincoln, Tester, and Reid, who opposed it so he could procedurally bring up the bill again). But get this -- more than the a third of the votes against (14 out of 35) came from Democrats and Republicans hailing from southern states (Bunning, Burr, Chambliss, Cochran, Corker, DeMint, Hutchinson, Isakson, Lincoln, McConnell, Sessions, Shelby, Vitter, Wicker). Much of this southern opposition can be explained by labor politics. The South is mostly anti-union, and southern GOPers last night blamed the United Auto Workers for the collapse. Also, don’t forget that foreign automakers have plants in the South: BMW is in South Carolina; Mercedes is in Alabama; and Toyota, among other places, is in Alabama, Kentucky, Mississippi, and Texas.

Video: The Senate votes down a proposed $14 billion bailout for U.S. automakers.  NBC's Tom Costello reports.

*** More North vs. South: In the end, the auto bailout was one of those debates in Congress that eventually makes everyone look bad, because it appears everyone is voting on self-interest -- from the industrial-state senators who supported the measure; to those in the South who didn’t; Dems who are pro-labor; and Republicans who would like to bust up the unions. Indeed, it’s worth reminding everyone that tensions between northern and southern US senators have existed throughout this country’s history (regarding slavery, secession, and civil rights). And given that Democrats will either hold a 57-42 or 58-42 or 59-41 majority in the next Senate -- depending on what happens in Minnesota and Illinois -- and given that much of the GOP caucus will hail from the South, we can only expect these tensions to increase during the first two years of the Obama administration. By the way, it’s amazing how McConnell was able to run circles around Reid. Sure, the numbers are closer now than they will be in a month. And, sure, it’s always easier to be minority leader than majority leader. But McConnell is proving to be a pretty smart minority leader, while Reid continues to get frustrated again. And the lesson the Senate GOP caucus is going to learn from this fight is that by sticking together, they can hold up Obama's agenda.

*** How the bailout failed: For most of the day, NBC’s Ken Strickland says, it looked like freshman GOP Sen. Bob Corker was going to save the automakers from immediate bankruptcy. But after hours of negotiations, the talks collapsed on one issue: the automakers union agreeing to new contracts to put labor cost on par with foreign automakers like Honda, Nissan, and Toyota. Strick notes that the UAW agreed to the parity, but refused to accept the timing for when the new rules would take place. The negotiators were pushing for the spring of 2009, when the economy is expected to still be floundering. Republicans and Democrats agreed that issue was the fatal flaw. "They have not been willing to give a date specific by which parity can be achieved," GOP Leader Mitch McConnell said, "and it is upon that issue that we've reached an impasse." Democratic Banking Committee Chairman Chris Dodd agreed, saying: "There was no debate from the United Auto Workers or anyone else that we ought to achieve parity in the wages and benefits.  The question was the timing of it."

*** Where we go from here: NBC’s Strickland adds that the White House and the Federal Reserve still have to authority to rescue the industry with some short term fixes. Option No.1: Treasury Secretary Paulson can use money from the $700 billion October rescue package, the so-called TARP money, to aid the automakers. Bush has been adamantly opposed to using that money for that purpose, saying it was designed for financial entities. Option No. 2: The Fed could give the automakers short-term loans. But does Bush allow an auto company to go under on his watch? That's not a legacy mark he wants on his resume. The "Hoover" ghost bothers many a Republican still occupying 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. Imagine this irony: The legacy of Herbert Hoover saves the US auto makers. Indeed, here’s the breaking news at publication time -- the White House says it would be willing to use TARP money…

*** The Blago scandal: It’s now Day Four in the Blagojevich scandal, and two people the press is longing to hear from soon: Blagojevich and Rahm Emanuel. We heard from Obama yesterday and, as predicted, his response was MUCH stronger than his initial one on Tuesday. Of course, we've seen this movie before: Obama is hit with or surrounded by controversy; his initial response is tepid, mild, lame; and then the next day (or two or three later), he gets it exactly right. So far, Obama has benefited by getting mulligans after an initial response. But what happens when the do-overs stop? At some point, doesn’t Obama have to start getting things right the first time? As for Blago, how long can he go without saying, well, anything? It seems everyone is claiming they don't talk to Blago; it's apparently the new badge of honor. Jesse Jackson Jr. claimed it had been four years; Obama wouldn’t invite Blago to the Dem convo, Lt. Gov. Quinn says it's been 18 months since he's spoken to him; Blago's one-time political sugar-daddy, father-in-law Dick Mell, they don't speak, either. His lawyers won't take his calls because of unpaid bills. Will any of us in the media get a shot at him?

Video: NBC's David Gregory talks with TODAY's Meredith Vieira about the Blagojevich scandal.

*** Shiny metal object overload: By the way, the Andrew Cuomo-Caroline Kennedy drama -- Cuomo yesterday refused to say whether Caroline is fit to succeed Hillary -- would normally be the media's shiny metal object distraction of the day. But wow, so many other stories out there today… Speaking of Caroline, let's not forget this response from Obama, himself in his interview with NBC's Tom Brokaw on Meet the Press last Sunday. “[T]he last thing I want to do is get involved in New York politics. I've got enough trouble in terms of Illinois politics.” What did Obama mean?

*** That never-ending recount: In the latest movement in Minnesota's Coleman-Franken recount, the state canvassing board meets at 10:30 am ET in St. Paul to consider the fate of hundreds of mistakenly rejected absentee ballots, as well as the 133 missing ballots from a Minneapolis precinct. Given that the difference separating Coleman and Franken is so small (192 votes per the Star Tribune, or four votes according to the Franken folks), this decision could play a key role in deciding the eventual outcome of the race.

*** Meeting the press: And on Sunday, in his initial show since taking over the reins of NBC’s Meet the Press, David Gregory will have the latest in the Blagojevich scandal, plus a discussion on the economy with Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm, Mitt Romney, Carly Fiorina, Wal-Mart President, CEO Lee Scott, and Google CEO Eric Schmidt. After that, there’ll be a roundtable with NBC’s Chuck Todd and the Chicago Sun-Times’ Mary Mitchell.

Sunday, in his initial show since taking over the reins of NBC’s Meet the Press, David Gregory will have the latest...
*******************************************************

... on everything that is happening.  Wow.  Gregory sure has his work cut out for him, no?

http://thepajamapundit.com/
Sometimes I wonder just who the hell won the Civil War, anyway.
The stinking southern clowns just don't get it that the Civil War is over and has been for over 140 years.  I think it's time to make sure unions make inroads into the south as we make it easier for workers to unionize.  Way past time to give the blue collar workers more rights and pay they deserve and unions are the only way to make idiot management respect the blue collar workers.

I am glad that the White House is willing to finally use some of the bank bailout money for the auto industry.  Where are the stinking banks at when the auto makers need money?  Yeah they're complete failures at making sure there are loans for people to buy cars.
Imagine that! Senators representing the interests of their states. Will wonders ever cease?

Listen, the Big 3 automakers have gone the way of the dinosaurs. They're now extinct. They couldn't keep up with the times and the competition. And at the very last second of their existence, they ran to Congress and asked the People of the country for a handout. Sorry, it doesn't work that way. There are strings attached to the kind of money they were looking for, and one of those strings was to get their costs in line with other manufactors. The Big 3 couldn't do it, so now instead of having three-quarters of a cake, they have none at all, and only themselves to blame.
I surely won't be watching MTP this Sunday.  Don't like the guests.  My opinion only!

They need to use TARP money.  Do something for the people who works for these Auto Company idiots.  There is a great post from an Auto Dealer on First Read.  Gives info I wasn't aware of.  Thank you!

Blago brought this on himself.  Just like other politicians in his position, probably won't take responsibility for this mess.  Like at our current Pres.
GOP now stands for the Grand Obstructionist Party.

What kind of democracy do we have when legislation can't pass even if its supported by a majority in both the House and Senate?  The Senate really needs to reconsider its cloture rules so as to do away with the filibuster.  The reality now, is that the republicans will block everything that Obama wants to get done, and the result - gridlock or watered down legislation that is so compromised it amounts to nothing.
" And the lesson the Senate GOP caucus is going to learn from this fight is that by sticking together, they can hold up Obama's agenda."
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
Wow, what a great lesson!

By "sticking together" the Repbublican party can obstruct the will of the majority of the American voters! Bravo!

I know how to solve the entire auto bailout mess:

Let's just not help any companies (banks included of course!), cut everyone's taxes (which many folks won't have to pay because they don't have a job anyomre), bury our heads in the sand (of Saudi Arabia), and whistle Dixie! Look how great it's worked for the past 8 years - if it ain't broke, don't fix it! Don't you feel "safer" now?

P.S. Don't forget to make sure everyone has a pair of boots - they are gonna need those bootstraps! (winky wink!)
I think Obama is wise to stay out of the local politics of any state now that he's going to be president.  He has enough headaches trying to figure out how to revive the broken economy the repugnant ones broke with their idiotic freeloader market garbage.

Don't be surprised if Blago actually selects someone to replace Obama now that he knows he's not going to get paid for it.  He'll do it out of spite.  I pity anyone whom he selects to repalce Obama.  I wonder if he picks someone if that person would then decline it.

Meet the Press will be a failure with Gregory doing the show.  I know I wont't ever watch it again.  I would much rather have seen Chuck Todd get the MTP chair.
FR: "“[T]he last thing I want to do is get involved in New York politics. I've got enough trouble in terms of Illinois politics.” What did Obama mean?"

That means Obama is neck deep in the Blagojevich scandle. It's looking more and more like Barack's Chief of Staff Emanual had quite a bit to do with who would be selected by Blagojevich to take Obama's seat in the Senate.

The country is finding out that Illinois politics is filthy top to bottom, and that includes Obama.
Classic that the FIRST MTP Gregory hosts he "does his thing" discussing the ECONOMY with the Republicreeps that FAILED in dealing with "RUNNING the money"  personally and officiallly. Carly and Mitt?!?!?!?

BOTH LOSERS.  Talk about LAME.  MSBC with their LAME doughboys C. Todd and D. Gregory.
History will record that under a Republican, conservative, Bush administration the financial institutions were socialized (bought out by the government.  It will also record that the Repuplican Senators refused to bail out the auto industry, either leading to bankrupsy or to be bailed out by the TARP fund. Perhaps, when push turns to shove, Bush will bail them out.

So why did not labor bow to the GOP senators? It has to do with principle.  The unions will not concede to GOP senators.  Yes, they will likely concede to wages similar to Toyota, but only on the forum of management/labor negotiations. My guess is Bush, who is only thinking legacy, will release some TARP funds to the Auto Industry.

BTW, David Shuster is doing a good job on 1600 Penn Ave. I like his tone and styple of questioning.

If US attorney Patrick Fitzgerald goes out of his way not to implicate Obama, why is the media toying with the "guilt by association" card.  Unless some serious facts are discovered.  I suggest the media go bark up another tree.
Southern Republicans KILLED DETROIT !!
In order to kill unions, they KILLED DETROIT !!

Where are the conservatives that said government can't interfere in the market ?

Sen. Corker wanted to make auto wages no higher than non-union wages !!!
Why be in a union if that union can't raise your wages?
The Southern Republicans wanted to KILL The UAW !!

They're killing the economies of the Rust Belt
This is deliberate
Take a look at your IRA Balances !
Guess where those balances are going ??

REMEMBER THAT IN 2010 !!

al Queda did NOT hurt America as much as these ECONOMIC TERRORISTS !!

Under Bush's watch !!

Democrats are in charge of Michigan. Governor, Representatives, Senators, state House, state Senate. They all made it easy for unions to bleed the Michigan auto industy dry. How's that working out for them now?
Sez Mike Murray: "Obama is hit with or surrounded by controversy; his initial response is tepid, mild, lame; and then the next day (or two or three later), he gets it exactly right."
--------------------------

What's wrong about Obama waiting 24 hours to get the facts and think about them before taking a firm position on an issue? If Obama was the type who shoots his mouth off without thinking, Murray would be blasting  him for that, too.

Only John McCain won praise from the corporate media for shooting his mouth off without thinking. The media loved him for it but the voters didn't want another cowboy who shoots first and asks questions later. The corporate media didn't notice, but that approach hasn't worked out too well over the past 8 years. Get over it, Murray. Your guy lost, and Jan. 20 cannot get here soon enough.
"Also, don’t forget that foreign automakers have plants in the South: BMW is in South Carolina; Mercedes is in Alabama; and Toyota, among other places, is in Alabama, Kentucky, Mississippi, and Texas."..there's the answer..
forget the entire country, forget the economic meltdown and repercussions to follow. It's all about you Shelby, Corker and Co.
Where is good old General Sherman when we need to teach the stupid south a lesson?  These poorly educated bible-clinging fools are going to wreck our failing economy with their ignorant petty partisan politics trying to bash the unions.  They were the ones who helped get the bushwhacker elected twice and now they're trying one last time to stick a knife in America's back just because they lost the past two election cycles.

Impeach McConnell, Vitter, Corker and Shelby!
The unions again showed what frauds they are. The Republicans negotiated with the unions in good faith, but the unions just spit in the Republicans eye. Lets hope the unions' membership like Mac&Cheese because they're going to be eating a lot of it.
Do the press ever police themselves? What part of "President Elect Barack Obama is not a part of our investigation of Governor Blogojevich" does the press not get? We are in danger of losing the American Auto industry and you guess are fixating on empty "scandals." I am really, officially, scared now, and the media is once again letting us down. (Not so much FR, of course, but certainly the other networks.)
Cannot believe these pompous self serving politicians. The could care less about middle class America and our country.
If the auto industry goes under, that will be our final, fatal blow.Their stipulations are totally irresponsible while letting the financial institutions spend our taxpayer money however they want.
They must stop the politicing and unify to save our country. They seem not to care about anything but thier misguided, irresponsible egos and beliefs.
"I've got enough trouble in terms of Illinois politics.” What did Obama mean?

Here we go parsing every word that comes out of Obama's mouth. Why don't you have David Gregory ask an Obama surrogate on MTP on Sunday. I would rather get an answer than spend days speculating on what he meant.

BTW I think that David Gregrory will be an absolutely horrendous moderator for MTP. The only thing that would be worse is to keep Brokaw. Ugh!
By,By miss american pie drove, my nissan to the levee, but it was over flowing from global warming .And those good ol boys from the southern states where drinking Jack and Rye, saying this is will be the way that you die, oooo, this will be the way that you die. They were singing ,by,by unions and don;t ever try,to ask for money from us, cause were not going to bite, and those ol boys kept drinking the right wing rye, saying this will be the day that you die.
I do not think I 'll watch MTP; since David Gregory's format is contraindicated. Mornining Joe is unbearable; therefore I do not toture myself since I don't watch it.
Why am I not surprised that FR tries to link Obama and Blago in almost every single paragraph, even when it's not related to the headline? Because it appears to be MSNBC's job to make a story out of nothing to cast doubt on Obama's integrity as much as possible before the inauguration. It's despicable and last night I didn't watch ANY of your dopey shows, preferring to watch Charlie Wilson's War. Now that's a guy who didn't apologize to the media! Shame on you FR and shame on the rest of your MSNBC TV lineup!

And on the bailout, did Congress ask any banker to take a cut in pay? How about the guy who manages accounts, were any of them asked to take a cut in pay? No, it's clear and simple. The southern GOPers can kill the unions AND save the jobs in their states (thanks to that unholy trinity of Japanese, Germans and the South) with a simple no vote, and that's what they did. It's class warfare at its worst, and I'm am so glad that Virginia isn't associated with the Old South anymore!
CHICAGO SUN TIMES

Is Emanuel the adviser on gov tape?
MUM | Obama’s chief of staff refuses to answer the question

December 11, 2008

President-elect Barack Obama’s chief of staff, Rahm Emanuel, refused to take questions from reporters this morning about whether he was the Obama “advisor” named in the criminal complaint against Gov. Rod Blagojevich.

The complaint states Blagojevich wanted a promise of a high-level appointment or some other reward for Blagojevich in exchange for Blagojevich naming Obama’s friend Valerie Jarrett to replace him in the U.S. Senate.

Emanuel was uncharacteristically absent from Obama’s news conference this morning. He was spotted two hours later in the lobby of Chicago’s City Hall.
—————————————————————————————————————————————

… IS RAHM EMANUEL GUILTY OR HONORABLE ? ..

If it turns out that he reported Blago’s blatant shakedown to the FBI, then he is a very honorable man and that bodes well for Obama’s character.

If it turns out he is in any way culpable in Blago’s ‘Senate Seat for Sale’ scheme — that bodes VERY badly for Obama and FOR America.

Dramatic much?

At some point, Obama has to start "getting things right the first time"?

Say what?

Who, pray tell, decides what the "right" response is?

The media?

Now that's a laugh . . . when is the media going to start "getting it right", like, EVER?

Are you guys still trying to figure out why Obama can't win the white working class vote? Or the hispanic vote? Or the women's vote? How about the dreaded "Bradley effect"?

The media is so used to reading their pre-programmed "narratives" (with "right" responses prewritten for maximum effectiveness), that the concept of a real live human being saying what he really thinks in a non dramatic POSTURING FOR THE CAMERAS kind of way must be almost IMPOSSIBLE for the ALL KNOWING MEDIA to understand.

President Elect Barack Hussein Obama does not have to dance to the media's tune to "get it right".  He just spent the past two years showing us that he knows what he is doing, so I will take his record over the media's ANY DAY.

Get over your selves.
Politics as usual in this country. The Southern States and corrupt politicians could care less about the millions of job losses that will occur in the east and Rust belt as long as foreign car makers continues to pour tons of money their way and once again lets blame the unions. We the people have become lap dogs. No problems giving billions of our money to Wall street and banks. God forbid if we bale out middle America. Thanks to unregulated free marketers, greedy/lying supply siders like Milton Friedman and others like most GOP SNAKE OIL SALESMANS ALONG WITH IDIOT BOY KING BUSH AND THEIR TAX CUTS FOR THE RICHEST 2-5% OF THE POPULATION. Now it's up to Obama to clean the mess up!
That should be the motto for all potential bailouts.

"CRASH AND BURN ... and learn."
What's wrong about Obama waiting 24 hours to get the facts and think about them before taking a firm position on an issue?

Houston

Have you noticed Barack's Mini-Me (aka Rahm Emanual) isn't around him the lsst few days? Apparently Rahm had quite a bit to do with who was going to be the next Senator appointed to Barack's seat. The slimy ooze is closing in on Mr. Obama.

GOING OUT OF BUSINESS SALE
When the costs of benefits outweigh the actual cost per hour of the employee it seems like it's time for a comprehensive health care overhaul.  What's sad, is those costs are what ultimately derailed this bill.
The trouble with the automakers and UAW negotiating with a very junior Senator Corker is that he could not deliver on his promises. Another potential star bites the dust. Quite sad really. Looks like the Bush Administration will have to pony up the remaining TARP money.
The party hasn't even started for Obama, and already he has a hangover.

This is nothing Barack. Wait . . . . , just wait.
Couple thoughts today:

1.  I was disappointed to see the attacks yesterday on Christine Todd Whitman.  She stepped down from the EPA when it was apparent Bush held the environment in such disregard.  She then authored a book, "It's My Party, too." where she holds a position that the Republican brand has been co-opted by extremists.  I don't agree with some of her positions; but I think she has been a rare voice against the Bush Administration and doesn't deserve to be lambasted by my friends here.  Just my opinion.
2.  I am disgusted with the Union Busting Republicans in the south.  They have benefitted nicely from the jobs created by the automobile industry.  Especially in Texas, General Motors has had major operations there for years.  The UAW is not the problem here.  The problem is greed and mismanagement in the boardroom, not on the factory floor.  Yes, fair wages and benefits are expensive; but CEO salaries and perks are GLUTTONOUS.  It is a literal embarassment of riches to see the fat cats like Vitter act like they are taking the 'moral' high ground here; but they had no problem lining the coffers on Wall Street two months ago.  The irony is not lost on us.

Much more on this,...later!
The Republican GOP do not care that the taxes and cost of living is higher in the north.  A person can rent an entire 3-bedroom house in the South for less than $600 a month.  My property taxes are more than $600 a month for a 22'x44' house in NY.

Those Rich-Southerns just want to line their own pockets with EGO, Status, and money.
Where is good old General Sherman when we need to teach the stupid south a lesson?  These poorly educated bible-clinging fools...
-----------------------------------------------
Liberals...so kind toward all people.  At least we know Eric in Salinas shares the same disdain for rural Americans that Obama does.
At least the White House will give the automakers their loans. Imagine that; Bush riding to the rescue of those godawful unions...

What's the fallout for the GOP, especially if the TARP money isn't enough or has too many strings? They'll be held responsible for those millions of jobs and a completely wrecked economy.

http://www.political-buzz.com/
Harry Reed was correct. The stock market collapsed this morning after the vote.

Eric Salinas continues to show his inner prejudice, hate and anger. He is a true republican as he describes them. He is the true repugnant one! Mystery finally revealed. Caught, just like Governor Blago.
Hopefully it will be goodbye and good riddance to the UAW and its pin headed leadership. I suppose I should not be surprised that Gittlefinger and the other fat cats that run the UAW are fighting like crazy to keep the status quo so they can collect their enormous salaries and perks. After all where could these union dopes earn the money they do in any other occupation. The Dems in congress are panicky ( just look at the panic on the faces of Obama, Reid, Pelosi and Dodd when on TV) about seeing the UAW trashed by the general public because these auto workers enjoy(ed) a standard of living far exceeding their skill level and far better than Mr average american. Dems are rightly afraid that John Q. Public Taxpayer will catch on to the the next big union scam, Government Employees. Yes Dems know if J.Q. Public becomes aware of how the Dems and their government unionized employee allies have been fleecing the country the reaction could be just as visceral. Without the support of these groups Dems are dead meat as the unions really are the ones who have put the Dems back in power. Unions represent only 12.7 % of american workers and as the average american becomes aware of the outright abuses within  public employee pay and benefits we will hopefully see the Dems tossed out. I know the press will do any thing it can to help the Dems stay in power but it looks as though the country has finally caught on to these scams.
Southern Republicans did not kill Detroit.  Lack of innovation and poor management killed Detroit.  Let's not forget who should take responsibility for the failure of the automobile industry.  Should we save it?  Maybe, but only to protect the employees.  Using the government, and in particular Republican legislators, as a scapegoat for bad management and a refusal to create and manufacture quality, fuel-efficient cars is ridiculous.
Yes its very embarassing to know that my own reprsentatives are willing to kill the American auto
industry, and put 3 to 4 million people out of work, but I am not in the least surprised. Take a drive through S.C., look at how the working man here lives,
and the truth is we are mostley the working poor.
I am disgusted with Jim Demint, Lindsey GRaham, and our really sickening Govenor Mark Sanford. I am 62 years old and I hope to live to see the day when the
people of S.C. realizes they are not republicans. They
dont realize that if your car is 15 years old, and that if you have no health care, and if you have no teeth, and if you are illiterate,YOU CAN NOT BE A REPUBLICAN.
marty
Corker, McConnell, Vitter, and Shelby ought to be ASHAMED OF THEMSELVES, standing up for NON-US companies over US companies, and in the end, NON-US countries over Americans. Repubs like to say they're PRO-BUSINESS, but of course that really means pro-business OWNERS, not pro-workers.

McConnell is a cocky little putz who barely got re-elected. Corker ran sleezy ads to win against Harold Ford, Jr. 2 years ago, and that puts him in good company with Vitter. And Shelby... well, he's as bad as the rest. I can't wait for the new congress to steamroll over these disgusting guys.

And on the topic of David Gregory on MTP -- as much as I miss Tim Russert, I'm excited to begin a new chapter of MTP. Remember that even Tim didn't start out as good as he became as moderator, so cut David some slack. Please don't just refuse to watch him because he's not Tim.
"So far, Obama has benefited by getting mulligans after an initial response. But what happens when the do-overs stop? At some point, doesn’t Obama have to start getting things right the first time?"
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

Here we go again. This is all a GAME to you in the media.

Obama says: "I reject <fill in the blank>"

MSM: "Oh NO! He ONLY rejected it! But what about DENOUNCING IT?! And repudiating it. And disavowing it? And decrying it?"

It's like the media expects ALL FIVE forms of rejection before they will be happy that Obama disapproves. Anything less than ALL FIVE rejections (and maybe a few more if you have a thesaurus handy) is somehow seen as an ENDORSEMENT of bad actions.

This is the single dumbest thing I've heard in a long while. It's amazing to watch the media react whenever someone does something bad. Everyone holds their breath and looks towards Obama for a strong, emphatic denunciation of whatever just took place. NO MATTER HOW OBVIOUS IT IS TO ANYONE WITH HALF A BRAIN THAT IT WAS BAD! There are certain acts that are SOOOO egregious that it's actually an insult to ask Obama what he thinks (as if you actually think instead he might embrace it and say "I love corruption! Yay!"). Person X could murder person Y, and still people would turn to Obama with bated breath waiting for him to decry it. WHY IS THAT NECESSARY??!?!?!? Is it not OBVIOUS? Does anyone actually think that Obama would approve of what Blago was doing? It was OBAMA's OWN CoS who turned the guy in!!! And Blago was caught on tape cursing the Obama team because whoever they were talking to was not willing to trade favors for the Senate seat. And yet, still, MORONS in the media stop and wait for Obama's denunciation.
I can't wait until January 20, this country is in a big mess. and so much for main street. I don't think the republicans now how much they are truly hurting themselves while trying to hurt Obama, and the democrats. America as we know it is over we now produce nothing. Good luck getting re-elected people are going to remember this for decades to come.
On the bailout, I think the Rs have given the Ds a nice big shiny gift for years to come to insure that blue collar workers don't drift back the voting R.   It will be SO easy to bring up this vote to remind workers whose side the R party is on.   And the Ds should remember they won by a landslide this year; start acting like it and use some of that clout to push "the other side of the story".

With respect to Caroline Kennedy, I find it quite odd that people thought Hillary was qualified, although her ties to politics were through family, she'd never held elected office herself and her main strengths were policy knowledge, time spent practicing law and fundraising abilities.   Yet Caroline's remarkably similar resume is not considered good enough for Senator.

To me the whole Caroline controversy sounds like complaints from people who have a dog in this fight and are using it as an excuse to advance their chosen candidates.
I wish I could articulate myself as well as Nashville_fan. I feel like I have a second job now, trying to hold the press accountable for their bogus narratives. Yesterday I was reading on other news sites all this commentary on how the scandal in Illinois will taint Obama, and they failed to mention the quote from the Attorney General saying Obama was not implicated. Does the general public get that? Apparently not, half the comments on those blogs are from people questioning Obama's involvement, assuming the other shoe will drop and Obama won't even be inaugurated. Maybe I just need to stop following the news. I am really scared about the economy and exhausted by sifting through the news, looking for somebody to trust.
Union busting is bad for the economy the same as the civil war devastating for5 the economy. Shame on those bureaucrats. Unemployment, foreclosures, health care, education, environment means nothing unless it benefits the banks, Lehman Brothers, and Aig. That comfortable   environment is only made possible by the people who make their vehicles, who in turn support the other segments of society.
Let's take a closer look at these hourly worker wages that the Republicans and some southern Dems appear to want reduced as part of a bail out package.

The reported $70/hourly wage for northern auto plant workers we all know includes benefits and other add-ons and is not the actual take home hourly wage. The average take home hourly wage is around $28/hour. Minus any overtime that comes to an annual salary of $58,240.

Now let's look at the average take home salary of auto workers in southern plants which is around $14/hour. Minus any overtime that comes to an annual salary of $29,120.

Now let's reflect as to the average Amercian home consisting of 2 adults and 2 children (4 people), and consider all that is required to maintain a decent living that would include housing, transportation, food, utilities, co-pays on health insurance, gas money, school supplies, child care, clothes, and other necessities as well as a few bucks each month for miscellaneous expenditures.

My question is this? Is an annual income of 58,000 a year ($4,833/month) too high for a family of four where Congress can legitimately ask the Union to voluntaryily agree to cut back worker's wages, or is an annual income of $29,120 ($2,426/month) ridiculously low for a family of four.

Perhaps what we should be doing is asking each of the senators who voted against the bailout and who want to realign those wages paid in the north with those wages paid in the south to live on and support a family of four on an annual salary of $29,120 at current prices for housing, transportation, utilities and other necessities.

And then, perhaps then, everyone might begin to understand that unless the cost of living decreases the issue is not that hourly workers in the North make too much. The issue is that hourly workers in the South make too little.

It would apear to me that what the Senators are asking is for those workers in Northern plants to agree to work for what might be considered slave wages that are paid to those workers in the south.

Personally, I know well trained, experienced, certified, electricans, plumbers, machinist and other trades persons in the South making between $10 and $13 an hour. Is this what we want all such folks to try and live on with the current cost of living expenses in the future? We do? Ok, tehn lets lower the Senators salaries to also reflect such parity.
“[T]he last thing I want to do is get involved in New York politics. I've got enough trouble in terms of Illinois politics.” What did Obama mean?
------------------
Uh, maybe that he's just a tad busy getting ready to be the leader of the free world while the economy is tanking and the climate changing and we're fighting three wars, etc. ...... and he's being distracted enough with endless questions about the Illinois appointment so the last thing he wants to do is stick his nose in the NY appointment situation and have to answer endless questions on that. In other words, he meant pretty much what he said.  What did YOU think he meant?
And the lesson the Senate GOP caucus is going to learn from this fight is that by sticking together, they can hold up Obama's agenda.

So much for putting country first. Is this what we have to look forward to? What's next? Health Care? Environment? America is hurting badly and the GOP cares more about making Obama look bad. As a Republican who voted for Obama, I am appalled and thinking about changing to an Independent. Don't blame the unions for this one. The GOP never asked a Wall Street Exec. to take a pay cut, give up a multi-million bonus. Instead, they warn to strong arm middle class workers who just want to provide for their families.
Guys, this may be off mark but could you really not do better than David Gregory?  I think this will be the end of the dominance of MTP in the ratings.  I know I will not watch.  Obviously you don't give a creep what viewers think, however I believe you could've done better.
