Financial bailout vs. auto bailout

Posted: Friday, December 12, 2008 2:47 PM by Mark Murray

From NBC's Mark Murray
Twenty-one senators (18 Republicans and 3 Democrats) voted FOR the financial bailout back in October, but voted AGAINST the auto bailout.

Republicans: Bennett (UT), Burr (NC), Chambliss (GA), Coburn (OK), Coleman (MN), Corker (TN), Ensign (NV), Grassley (IA), Gregg (NH), Hatch (UT), Hutchison (TX), Isakson (GA), Kyl (AZ), Martinez (FL), McCain (AZ), McConnell (KY), Murkowski (AK), Thune (SD)

Democrats: Baucus (MT), Lincoln (AR), Reid (NV).
NOTE: Reid voted against on procedural grounds to be able to bring up bill again

What's more, 13 of these 21 are up for re-election in 2010 (or their seats are up): Lincoln, Reid, Martinez (retiring), Vitter, Coburn, Murkowski, McCain, Isakson, Grassley, Gregg, Burr, Thune, Bennett. Another one -- Hutchison -- clearly has her eyes on running for governor in 2010.

*** UPDATE *** MSNBC.com's Tom Curry did a piece on Wednesday previewing these vote-switchers.

And your point is what . . . . . ?
If they let GM go under, I think their pensions should go under as well.
Point is that 2/3 of the senators who voted for the financial bailout but against the auto bailout are up for re-election or possibly running for another office in 2010...
The Republican's blocking of the auto bailout reeks of conflict of interest.  Not only do they want to harpoon the US auto industry to help the  constituent foreign auto makers in their states (Shelby, Sessions, Corker, McConnell...you know who you are), but they would like to bust the UAW.  By making the union irrelevant, they hope to destroy the political army that has been helping to defeat them solidly (of late) in the Northeast and Midwest.  I think this is going to backfire on them in a big way.

The hypocrisy of helping the financial giants without demanding compensation and benefit cuts from their white collar employees while demanding these concessions from the blue collar workers of the auto industry, simply astrounds me.  Is there a better way for them to re-iterate that they are the party of the rich...the party of moneyed interests.  It's time that all working people wake up to the fact that the Republicans never have been and never will be on their side.  Face it, if it weren't for the wrapping of themselves in social issues (which becomes less important in times like these) those Republicans would go the way of their forebearers...the Whigs...and here's to hoping that they will.

Maybe GWB will have an epiphany and enact something to counter the impossibly horrible legacy that he will leave behind.  Maybe as a final act of courage he will use some of the TARP money for the 14 billion dollar bridge loan to keep the auto industry afloat.  Look, you can't blame a guy for hoping.
Obama/Biden for a better America
It'll cost MUCH MORE than the $39 Billion if Detroit fails

Look at the Stock Market, today
We'll lose more than $14B !!

The Republicans just want to bust a union !!

It's a wake up call !!
Time to end the rule allowing filibusters
If we don't the Republicans will sabotage Obama's agenda
They'll try to extort concessions from him
(Iand make Balogjevich look like a piker)

Thanks for showing your hand, McConnell
Time for a pre-emptive strike
So what you're saying is, is if Senators don't give money away (money they don't even have) to dead end companies, they shouldn't be elected next time around?
Is this silly season again, its ok to bail out the banks(rich wall street goofs) after they made stupid decisions requarding the morgages but now they say no to the blue collar american because they happen to work for a unionized company.
lets face it. the reason why they need the help is because of the health benifits that are paid to the workers and retired workers, the reason why honda, toyota and the forgien car makers are not crying broke like the big three are is that THEY DO NOT PROVIDE HEALTH CARE FOR THERE WORKERS, THEY GOVERNMENTs DO. so if the big three spends 75.00 per hour, well at least 20 of it is for the health care costs. so lets make the playing field even, and provide government health care for american workers, take the burden off the american companies and in 10 years we will see how well the big three will be off.
its not about the unions, or waste, jets, or fuel effenciy, its about the over head that american companies are on the hook for, health care, unemployment insurance. it we had only listioned to hillary and bill 16 years ago and passed a health care system that gives the american company a chance to compete on the world market.
by the way, construction labor rates are much higher than it is to build a car, 73.00 per hour is not all that much. but we can not import office building and condo building, they have to be built be american workers, here in the united states.
They better hope there's re-election funds that were included in the 700 billion, because we lose 3 million jobs...the only people voting for them in 2010 are themselves!
Looks like the auto companies were just late getting to the party. By the time they got to the head of the line, all the goodies had already been passed out.

Maybe they should go talk to Blagojevich. He's seems pretty astute at raising money.
Here's another good reason to end the filibuster:

'...MANUFACTURED OUTRAGE WATCH.... It's not just Arlen Specter; congressional Republicans in general are inclined to fight Barack Obama on at least one cabinet nomination, and they're getting closer to going to war over Eric Holder, Obama's choice to be the next attorney general.

For the most part, the GOP wants to complain incessantly about the 2001 Marc Rich controversy. But as the Washington Post reported this morning, plenty of Republicans realize "the pardon issue alone will not be enough to jeopardize Holder's confirmation." That's especially true if the Democratic caucus has 58 (or 59) members.

So, in the hopes of delaying a vote on Holder, and throwing as much mud as possible at the new administration in the new year, Senate Republicans are gearing up for a kitchen-sink strategy. Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa), in a speech on the Senate floor yesterday afternoon, tried to connect Holder to every conservative complaint about the Clinton Justice Department in the '90s. Grassley then went on try to connect Holder to Rod Blagojevich. (Blagojevich tried to hire Holder for some independent state review a few years back. The governor screwed up the process and Holder left. To argue this reflects poorly on Holder is ridiculous.)...'

The country is on the verge of a MAJOR RECESSION
Instead of working to find economic solutions, Republicans are trying to play games

Hopefully, Obama will see this and push the Democrats to end the filibuster rules

You need a reasonable partner to co-operate with
Clearly, the Republicans ARE NOT REASONABLE

INTERCOURSE REPUBLICANS !!

Anna M: Thanks for the video. Hadn't seen it since the mid 1980's actually until last night. Let's hope President Bush will give a lot of thought to what will happen if the auto workers all have to get in an unemployment line.

As our friend CA and so many others have pointed out, we need the salaries of the workers in the south to go up. I think these Senators have it all backwards. If the corporate heads can afford private jets, then their workers' salaries aren't the problem. Greed is. In other words, bad management.

Cost of living is going through the roof everywhere and none of us can put any money into the economy unless we have some decent wages.

Elementary my dear Watson.

So see ya Republican Party. In the meantime, take a pay cut. You don't do anything worthwhile to earn it. And get rid of your healthcare. It's too expensive.
Democrats scored a big victory in Minnesota where the canvassing board ruled to include the 133 missing ballots even if they have disappeared. This means Franken has 46 extra votes:

And Franken still loses.
The days of the Freeloading Unions is over. And not a moment too soon. Companies having to pay a premium on the work they need to get done to low life and low production workers has just killed the goose that laid the golden egg. No more paying UAW workers tons of money they don't deserve only to have the union take a lot of that money and plow it back into Democratic politicans to buy their votes.

All defense contractors
Probably none could make it in the market place
But tax payers support these LOSERS

You couldn't figure this out Pointless?  I would expect that from someone who is so devoid of character, they can't even sign their name to it.
MSierra,

No, what it's time to do is time to force the obstructionists to actually filibuster!  Let the American people see the obstructionists in action.

The filibuster is a time honored means to stop a small majority from running over the minority.  However, those who threaten it should actually be forced to do it, rather than cry wolf.
The pressure to bail the banks was incredible.  everyone had been convinced that there was no other choice.  That is not the case this time, therefore, the senators are being much more prudent
All defense contractors

MSierra, SF (Sent Friday, December 12, 2008 3:33 PM)

You're right Sierra, lets dump all those companies. By the way, do you know how speak Russian? How about Arabic? And I notice the SF in your signature. California? Most of these companies are in CA. California would wish to be a 3rd world country after they lost all these companies, you know, the companies currently paying all the taxes in California.
MSierra, you need to take your medicine.  Money to the companies you listed goes to actual defense contracts to be used for something.  It's a little different than throwing it down the drain to save a company for 3 months before they have to come back and ask for more.   Trust me, I work for one of those companies, and we work hard on the contracts we get. We don't consider it a 'hand out', as you refer to it, because we do something to earn it.
MSierra - your comment is too ill-informed and ignorant to discuss.
I WAS HAPPY TO SEE THE UNION GO AFTER THE ANTI- USA STATES.ITS ABOUT TIME, MAYBE THE USA PEOPLE WILL VOTE THEM OUT NEXT TIME AROUND, KEEP IT UP AUTO UNION.
I assume that those of you on the left who are talking of Dems getting rid of the fillibuster were similarly outraged when the Dems used the fillibuster (quite frequently) from 2000-2006 when the Reps had control of the Senate.
I love how all the Dems are calling to change the Filibuster when it goes against them.  I'm in favor for Bridge Loans to the Big 3, but we have a process and we have to work with it.  It's funny how the liberal left wants to give MORE power to the Pres and his stallinist party but fought tooth and nail to remove power from the Republicans while in office.  Yup... change, it's a com'n...
Marry Galloway... how is saving 34 Million jobs "...not the case this time..."?!?! Every State in the Union will feel the pain of the US Auto industry.  If you aren't driving a US built car from a US owned company, then you're part of the problem. Be happy you didn't buy American when you cash that unemployement check.
