Obama frustrated by Blago speculation

Posted: Wednesday, December 17, 2008 1:27 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC’s Athena Jones

Obama told reporters he was frustrated at being unable to correct speculation in the media about conversations members of his transition team may have had with the office of Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich, who is facing corruption charges that include an allegation that he sought to trade the president-elect’s vacated Senate seat for personal gain.

Video: President-elect Obama says he's abiding by a request from the U.S. Attorney not to speak about the Blagojevich investigation, but expects to release more information as soon as next week.

“It's a little bit frustrating. There's been a lot of speculation in the press that I would love to correct immediately,” Obama said when asked “how difficult” it was to have to wait to release an internal review his team has completed regarding contacts staffers had with the governor’s office.

“We are abiding by the request of the U.S. attorney's office,” he continued. “But it's not going to be that long. By next week you guys will have the answers to all your questions.”

It’s the fifth time the president-elect has addressed the Blagojevich matter before the press since the governor was arrested last week.

Though he has refused to go into detail about the who on his team may have had contact with the governor’s office -- citing a desire to cooperate with the ongoing federal investigation -- Obama has repeatedly said that he had no contact with Blagojevich or his office and that no members of his team had engaged in any improper contact with the governor’s office.

Frustrated or not, the issue is not likely to go away until several questions are answered, among them: which members of Obama's team spoke with Blagojevich’s staff about the Senate seat, the extent of that contact and whether anyone on the president-elect’s team knew of any illegal attempt by the governor to trade the vacated seat.

Obama used his 11th press conference since being elected to announce Colorado Sen. Ken Salazar as his choice to head the Interior Department and former Iowa Gov. Tom Vilsack for secretary of agriculture.

In their remarks, Obama and his designees focused on the importance of promoting clean energy and biofuels, reducing the country's dependence of foreign oil and expanding opportunities in rural areas.

Salazar, who wore a cowboy hat to the press conference, is the second Latino to be named to the Cabinet, following New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson who was Obama’s pick for commerce secretary.

Vilsack is the fourth former contender for the Democratic nomination in this year’s election to join Obama’s team, following Joe Biden, Hillary Clinton and Richardson.

NBC’s Abby Livingston
adds that on Salazar wearing his cowboy hat indoors, First Read consulted David Courtney, who writes a Texas Monthly column that is a cross between Emily Post and the New York Times' Ethicist.

He agrees with NBC's Pete Williams, who writes that “real cowboys don't wear their hats indoors, unless they're at a square dance or maybe an indoor livestock auction.”

"It's more accepted now,” Courtney said, “but his mother probably would have told him not to do that."

As a moderate Democrat I think this is a story that is being trumped up by your news director to get ratings and to try and show some spine. Nobody that I talk to at work or elsewhere sees a connection between Blago and the President elect. Fitzgerald said that Obama was in the clear and thaqt he asked or directed Obama to wait until next week. So instead of making up conjecture and brewing a tempest in a teapot why not wait and report the news when it is really news. This story is not much better than gossip.
I was born and raised in New York in a time that said "no hats indoors." I now live in a cowboy state and it makes me nuts to be in a restaurant (and I don't mean McDonald's although, in my book, it wouldn't be proper there either) and have men sitting around with their hats on. I have even refused to sit at a table with my family until my son and/or son-in-law removed their hat. Good manners never go out of style unless you live in a state where good manners were never taught.
Is he getting worried about what blog and Jackson will say or is he concerned over what the FBI has on those tapes ??????
Blago is fascinating...but such a distraction.  How about coming up with some real questions such as how is Obama going to square the circle between Stephen Chu and Vilsack?  There are serious issues that Obama and his government are involved with.  Blago is not one of them.
Obama should tell the press to shove off....Obama has no obligation to answer every little bone headed question some cub reporter or chickenhawk can come up with...none

Go ask Bush why he is responsible for the deaths of 10's of thousands of innocent people in Iraq...thats a question worth asking
Cowboys and Indians. The Civil War.

Keith Olbermann put MSNBC on the map with his tenacity surrounding the Bush Administration. He's the reason we started watching MSNBC. The ONLY reason.

You can smear him all you want. He told the truth. When the rest of the on air media DID NOT. Keith is intelligent. He reads history and is not afraid of anyone. He needs no talking points as he obviously can think for himself, unlike the entire Republican Party. When Limbaugh and Rove speak, Scarborough listens. Still.

Scarborough and his party have ruined everything they have touched politically. They are miserable and don't want to see Barack Obama succeed.

Well this isn't about Barack Obama. It's about America. Something the GOP knows nothing about. They can't survive unless they tear someone down. Or exploit someone.

It's back to slave labor for them. That should tell you all you need to know about them.

And they think they won the culture war. And we're a center right country.

Oh brother.

They haven't gotten anything right, beginning with Nixon, and certainly since Ronald Reagan.

As Thom Hartman said, what we're witnessing now is the results of Reaganomics.

Why am I not surprised?
OK.Todd,Chuck Dom,Carrie, does Obama have to get out a color crayon,or do you now get it.You guys need to get out of the office more often, been to the rodeo, ever, how about one of these shit kicker bars,I doubt you have to many of those in your town D.C.I for one don't care every minute what Blago is doing or saying or when he goes to the restroom ,quite as much as ya'll,so maybe go ask the Bushwacker and his side kick Dick why they where so bent on war,for profit,or protect there oil buddies interest,to tap our phones,to make all our friends at Blackwater millions, how about the boys at Ciki, another contractor with Bush ties.Have the FR crew looked into all the over charging they have done to the tune of millions?I would like some answers on these topics, could you ask George for me>Thanks!
I'm a bit surprised that Morning Joe was not there shouting questions or throwing his shoes. Seriously, why can't the press/media focus on relevant issues and give Blago a rest.  Why are you not airing on FR Cheney's smoking gun comments that he supported waterboarding? Why are you not airing Bush's daily agenda (nothing on my calendar today) and his attempts to ruin endangered species, the air we breathe, the water we drink?  Why are you not asking Bush whether he will bail out the auto industry.  Why are you not asking when the bail-out money given to banks will trickle down to main street borrowers? Does MSNBC hang back and only report on stories that others write?  Why isn't there any investigating reporting from MSNBC.  Would you just answer at least one of the above quesions?
Bob and weave, hide, talk about something else, but it still won't go away Obama. People of low moral character like you always get caught.
The Blagojevich problem bothers Obama this much? Poor thing. Doesn't look like Obama is thick-skinned enough to be President. At least it will be funny to watch him as he collapses.
The phrase "nothing improper" re Blogojevich sounds a little too Clintonesque, a tap dance around facts. And Emanuel's "I'm a father today" is too precious, sort of get over yourself and don't give red meat to the media.

Say "right now the prosecutor is doing his job and we'll stay out of the way until he does. None of my team is involved in the complaint, whatever other conversations happened will absolutely be explained when the criminal investigation is completed."

That's more direct than all the parsing and the vague "improper." We know Obama is as clean as it's possible to be coming from Chicago and doesn't need a smoke screen. Say what you mean and mean what you say, in simple English. He's usually very good at it, but this time wandered off into legalese.
'...former Iowa Gov. Tom Vilsack for secretary of agriculture...'

Does this mean we're going towards biofuels ?
I think Vilsak was a proponent

Is this really the right direction ?
Doesn't it keep us in 'mono-crop' agriculture ?

Maybe that works, but I'm skeptical

Wind and solar for me....
.... and FORGET Nuclear (higher utility and cancer rates)
If Obama's so frustrated, then he should release all the records to the prosecutor's office NOW, instead of waiting until the 22nd.
While he's at it, he should also release his birth certificate...there's a few people who are "frustrated" because they don't know if the President elect is even eligible to take office.
See, I don't understand why a guy who's supposed to be so squeeky clean, has so many lawyers working to keep personal secrets for him.
I thought it was the big bad Clintons who were supposed to operate that way. (?)
The press obviously does not have enough to do or say these days. How many times does Barack have to say the same thing?. Rod Blago and his lawyer are both crooks and will use all info realeased to the press for reasons of conflict.

Why don't you all calm down and let folks do their jobs!!!
Talk about a death by a thousand cuts! The unwillingness of the press to have patience or accept Obama's answers regarding any contact with Blagojevich, by himself or his staff, is leading them to speculate ad nauseam about any role he had with the current governor's situation or the corruption in Illinois politics. All of this speculation is nothing more than speculation for the sake of ratings. Blagojevich hasn't been INDICTED on anything at this point, so can we move on to more pressing and important matters?

Is there any correlation between the press, livestock and Salazar wearing a cowboy hat during the press conference? It would seem that a case could be made that the press is acting more or less like livestock when it comes to some stories....
Obama takes more questions then Bush. Trouble is, he doesn't answer them.
A question is a terrible thing to waste.
Is this Obama guy so totally insecure that he can't handle any comments against him? I am beginning to look forward to his presidency. He will literally implode when none of his plans work. Probably find him sucking his thumb in the corner of the Oval Office. (Yes, I know ovals don't have a corner. So what, Obama has no experience or leadership skills and yet he still will be president.)
All the haters on this blog need to stop hating.  This country at this time needs to come together.  We're all in this together.... Geez!
---------------------------------------------------
Right on! Republicans, stop hating!  Just follow the lead of the gracious Democrats the last eight years, who were so supportive of President Bush!
Carol Storm...
Did you watch the press conference??? He didn't look bothered to me. Not that he doesn't have every right to be. What part of NO WRONG DOING do you not understand? It was made very clear by Fitzgerald. Assuming you know who Fitzgerald is.
Get used to it Mr. President-elect.

And when you think about it, what better time is there for exploiting Blagojevich than the PE's lame duck period that ends in the third week of January.
Apparently FR all your readers want to hear is about Cheney, waterboarding, war crimes. It seems to me these are issues that are out there that need to be dealt with instead of Blago. Wait for next week for petes sake and talk about the REAL issues. Is there an auto deal or not. Do we have to do your job?
Since he's already clarified they found no 'wrong-doing' what is the problem? What are they going to report on, conversations Emmanuel and Blago had about the weather? Do they think they'll find some evidence of wrong-doing Obama's lawyers just happened to miss? There isn't going to be anything in the review that could possibly interest them. I cannot wait till this thing hops off the news cycle. It's been there a week too long already. Time to get back to stuff that matters.
I'll bet Obama isn't half as frustrated as the MSM and the GOP right now over this. They want to gossip and find any miniscule thing they can bloviate about. Why not cover REAL news and report any happenings with Blogo as they happen. We aren't stupid we catch the news every day. If we miss something we will catch up on it. We don't need a play by play, minute by minute, mouth drooling account of every little thing that happens with Obama or Blogo or any one of those other guys. I know sensatioalism sells ads but good grief enough already find something else and sensationalize it for a while give this a break.
