'Twas the seventh week of recount...

Posted: Monday, December 22, 2008 4:46 PM by Carrie Dann

From NBC's Carrie Dann, Mark Murray, and Domenico Montanaro
The holiday week may have visions of sugarplums filling many people's minds, but it's still rejected absentee votes and challenged ballot count spreadsheets dancing in the heads of Minnesota's politicos. Here's a quick briefing on where things stand in the recount that hits the seven-weeks-past-Election-Day mark tomorrow:

Q: Who is ahead?
A: As of Friday afternoon, the Minneapolis Star-Tribune count gives Franken a 251-vote advantage going into tomorrow’s meeting of the state canvassing board to review challenged ballots withdrawn by both candidates during the recount.  Franken's team predicts that, coming out of that meeting, they will still hold a lead of 35-50 votes.  That number is based on their internal count of withdrawn challenges, which are in the process of being reallocated into the respective piles of the candidate for whom each ballot was originally cast.  The Coleman team did not comment today on how they expect tomorrow's count to shake out, but they are reserving hope that two outstanding disputes -- over ballots that may have been counted twice and over mistakenly rejected absentee ballots -- will be resolved in their favor to give them the upper hand.

Q: How many ballots are left to count?
A: After tomorrow's meeting of the state canvassing board, assuming that no unplanned disputes arise over the spreadsheet of reallocated withdrawn challenged ballots, every ballot cast on election day will have been counted.  But there are still an additional 1,600 mistakenly rejected absentee ballots that have not been included, and the Minnesota Supreme Court set December 31 as the deadline for all parties to jointly determine how to count these absentee ballots. (There is some doubt that the Coleman and Franken camps will be able to come together on this, although both sides have publicly pledged to honor the court's order that they act "in good faith" on the shared agreement; if they don’t, they could be subject to sanctions, though it remains unclear exactly what those sanctions would be.)

Q: So what happens tomorrow?
A: Two things:  One, the state canvassing board reviews a spreadsheet of reallocated withdrawn ballot challenges and -- hopefully -- releases a final tally of the counted votes. That's the number that the Franken campaign expects to see +35-50 votes in their favor.  Also tomorrow, the state's Supreme Court meets to consider the issue of about 100 votes that the Coleman team believes were accidentally counted twice.

Q: When is the election certified? Who certifies?
A: We have an easy answer to the second question: The state canvassing board certifies. But we don't have an answer to the first of when the election is certified. "It's up in the air," the secretary of state's office tells NBC News. The earliest possible date? If there are no further lawsuits or disputes, the count could technically be final by December 31st, the deadline by which both campaigns must agree on how to handle the accidentally rejected absentee ballots.

Q: How likely is that?
A: Keep in mind that the back-and-forth in Minnesota has now gone on over a week longer than the Florida recount, which concluded on December 13, 2000.

Bottom line: don’t nix your New Years’ Eve party plans to watch the news, just yet.

Why not just flip a coin at this point? It would be cheaper than a new election and far less of a problem with challanges etc. The incumbant calls it. If he calls heads and it comes up heads Coleman wins but if it comes up tails than Frankin wins.
The Florida Recount was halted by the judgement of the "Nine Wisemen" in Washington DC without the obligation of having every vote counted; the State of Minnesota has committed to having every legally submitted vote counted, so it's taking a bit longer.
I'd love to see Al in the Senate in time for the start of the Bush Administration War Crimes Trial.
FRANKEN IS GOING TO WIN THIS THING SO MR COLEMAN STOP TRING TO PULL A FAST ONE BY CHEATING, THE REPUBLICAN PARTY HAS CHEATED AMERICANS ENOUGH FOR THE PAST EIGHT YEARS, JUST PLEASE EXIT GRACEFULLY MR. COLEMAN
As the Democrats slowly steal yet another election (see Washington State governors race for reference). The real disenfranchisement is the Democrats putting up frauds like Franken to run and having governors like Blagojevich and Paterson appoint more frauds to fill other Senate seats. The Senate on the Democratic side is filled with dopes, so having three more dopes in that room won't make much of a difference.
It's time to flip a coin or let everyone vote over again. This is ridiculous.
It's nice to see the Republicans being stopped from stealing another election. Think about it, Coleman was publicly ridiculing Franken for wanting a recount of an election that he appears to have lost.

No Supreme Court to help steal this one, at least not yet.  But, we know from expierence these people will do anything to gain power.  Keep your powder dry boys!
.... and all through the house .... all the cheaters will stirring .... their hopes to arouse.

Get this friggin' thing over with by Easter.
If Franken weren't such a clown, Norm Coleman would have lost by 5% or so election night.
instead of spending $$$ on lawyers and dragging this thing out I agree with other posters it is time for both to man up and flip a coin. the margin of error is great than the difference in votes that separate them. The money could be better spent.
Obama's Report on Blago:

Why the big deal on Obama's report coming out (and when) regarding the Blago controversy. Obama has already stated that none of his staff were involved in any form of corruption or deals with Blago. What makes anyone think the report will say anything different? Why would it after Obama has already stated that nothing new or controversial will come of it? Yet the media makes it sound like a new version of the Bible has been discovered and it will be out in print tomorrow, and they are salivating about this report. But when it comes out and everyone is bored and it states nothing that would implicate any of Obama's staff the media will look like their normal silly selves awaiting like lap dogs for the next possible controversy to arise.
As a minnesotan,i'm more than willing to wait for the secratary of state to determine a winner. This will be a fair recount no matter who wins.Without the third party candidate involved Coleman would have been beaten soundly.Either way the ethics investigation into Colemans antics should be interesting.
So why in the world does Barney Frank keep coming out from under his rock to make stpuid comments? First he blamed the housing bubble burst on the Republicans - not true Barney, you and Dodd had more to do with it. Now he's blasting Obama for having Warren on the stage with him. Who made this low-life back-bench idiot the judge of all in the land?
It is really interesting how both democrats and republicans are always "stealing" elections, at the same time. Point is, we have no idea who actually won, because it is within the realm of statistical error. It is time for a revote!

Eagle, they aren't having a new election, they are counting all ballots pursuant to Minnesota law.
Al Franken?  Are you kidding.  An embarrassment to the Party and a humiliation to the State.

Darnell Walkers, Atlanta GA (Sent Monday, December 22, 2008 5:19
_________

And how does someone who lives in Georgia have such inside information to know about the electorate in Washington State?  Or do you just regurgitate everything Limbaugh and Hannity tell you?

I always love this "thinking" from the Right.  bush wins in 2000, but Gregoire steals one...such hypocracy...is it any wonder your party is in shambles?
To Darnell Walkers - you state that the democrats slowly steal another election, but you totally overlook the fact that your guy, the famous shrub, was appointed by the supreme court in 2000, and he was not elected by the voters, even though Gore had the most votes. Now I ask you honestly, how did that work out??? Two endless and unecessary wars, civil rights gone, spying on our citizens, and the worst economy since Hoover. Thanks for your input, it is totally wrong in so many ways, but it was input.
If the incumbant is ever close that this he should loose. The advantive is with the incumbant (money, name recognition etc.) and the challanger has an uphill climb.
Go Mr. Funnyguy Franken! We love your persistence and think you will make a great US Senator. Please tell Coleman not to let the door hit him in the fanny on the way out...he may not have bandaid insurance.
Another hypocritical Republican troll here trying to say some Democrat is trying to steal an election just by making sure the votes are counted and trying to point out a couple Democrats that are frauds when we already know about these Republicans criminals and frauds: Bush, Cheney, Rove, Gonzales, Rumsfeld, Sen Craig, Congressman Foley, Senator Stevens, former governor of IL George Ryan, former Commissioner of the FDA Lester Crawford, US Director of Foreign Assistance Randall Tobias, Congressman Duke Cunningham, Tom DeLay, John Doolittle, Rick Renzi, Former Deputy Interior Secretary Steven Griles, former CIA Executive Director Dusty Foggo, etc, etc, etc....  For more, check out "You Don't Know Me: A Citizen's Guide to Republican Family Values" by Win McCormack.
As good ol' Charlie Brown might say .......

AAAAARRRRGGGGH!!!!!!

Please find a way to get the thing over with!
If the count comes up short for Al don't worry. They can just keep counting them over till he wins.
Republicans never seem to be satisfied if they lose. It just keeps their fantasy conspiracies alive.
Take for an example the 2004 Washington State Governors race. After more than 3 million votes cast the race was too close to call, by Washington State law which requires a mandatory machine recount. In the initial count Dino Rossi, the Republican, won by a scant few hundred votes. This didn't mean he had won, since a recount was required by law. In the machine recount Rossi won again, but by a much smaller margin.
At this point, either candidate has the legal option to pay for a hand recount, which the Democratic candidate opted to do (and the Republican at the time said he would have done too, if the situation was reversed). The hand recount gave the election to the Democrat by 129 votes (an advantage of 0.0043%).
The Republicans naturally called it fraud, and to be fair the Democrats would have too.
It went to court with the Republican party challenging the count by the Election Commission and challenging a number of voters personally. They were thrilled when the case went to the most conservative judge in Washington State, who was also a Republican.
His results were that not only was there no fraud, but the Republican voter challenge was so flawed that he awarded over a hundred more votes to the winner, the Democrat.
The results of the investigation: Election Official's error rate - 0.02% Republican parties error rate - 16%.
Now,can we finally put this to rest!
Question:  With senators missing from Mn and NY, and at least one other senator going, is the filibuster magic number still 60?
Horray to Minnesota.
Democracy should have no timeline or end dates.
Those who have died for our freedom rejoice that those
in Minnesota honor your sacrifices by standing firm behind the ideal of each vote counting.
Let this be the example for all close races to come.
Counting each vote is the only way to ensure there are no "cheaters"
All because a bunch of clowns cannot figure out how to simply fill in an oval on a ballot. A simple and easy to read and understand ballot that any Kindergartener ought to be able to fill out. How embarrassing for MN.
God loves a Democrat
As the Democrats slowly steal yet another election (see Washington State governors race for reference).    I was working ing Seattle for part of this summer and fall, when everyone thought that the rematch would go to the repub Rossi vs the democrat Gregoire would go to Rossi, until everyone really started to look at what a reactionary Rossi is.  This time around Gregoire very handly defeated Rossi - 54% to 46%.  Oh, and this senate seat, held by Wellstone, well, Wellstone defeated Rudy Boschwitz twice, first time relatively closely, second time by a much more comfortable margin.  No repub has had a comfortable election for the senate or the governorship in MN - better than 52% - since Nixon.
no one is stealing this election.  this is simply too close to call with the technology we have to cast and count votes - it is a virtual tie.  flipping a coin would probably be the fairest thing.  anyway, hope franken wins.
Seems that the Coleman camp has been introducing doubt into the process the whole time. First alleging ballots were stored in a car trunk, they were no. Requesting Franken concede without a recount when the law required a recount. Then trying to get lost ballots tossed when marked envelopes and election machine clearly showed the votes had been cast and precidents from previous elections stated if ballots are lost then use machine tallies. Next demanding improperly rejected ballots be invalidated. Now they are circulating a "duplicate ballots" story with no proof just using the usual busy election night  confusion to assert that this somehow caused duplicate ballots. If it did then prove it and deduct the votes but otherwise its just a convenient theory for the losing side. How about we take account all the various ethics issues that Coleman is facing when we consider his duplicate ballots theory
Just fairly count the votes. Then when Al Franken wins it will be just like President Obama's win. The proof is in the votes and the voters have made their choice unlike some.
"The Senate on the Democratic side is filled with dopes"...  Is that right?  Well, the Dope In Chief (R) of all time finally leaves office next month.   How does anyone have ownership of "The Football" for 8 years, and still pronounce it "nucular"?
Responding to Darnell Walkers of Atlanta, the only dopes I can see are in the state of Georgia who elected that fraud, Saxby Chambliss. It is rare that an entire state should be ashamed.  Lester Maddox would be proud.

In Washington State Govenors race rematch, 4 years later, the Democrat won by a larger margin. And the second time there had been extensive review and purging of the voter registrations because of Republican complaints. Looks like the Republicans lost fairly.
Why is NBC not questioning some of the standards that the canvassing board is using in deciding who the voter intended to vote for.  This thing is a joke on so many levels.
Another fraud the Democrats are pulling is in NY. What is with this Kennedy woman? We obviously know that she’s quite wealthy, but beyond that, we don’t know much about where she gets her income, how she’s invested, whether she has followed her own principles in her investing activities, and so forth.

Kennedy has said no to all requests for this infomration.

Sounds like she wants her cake, and to eat it too.
Republicans or Democrats, put them in a paper bag, add a bunch of taxpayer money, shake them up and when you pour them out, they are hugging and kissing one another. When will the real public servants appear?
Both sides are acting in good faith now, but Greg you are really just a little slow, and Larry there will be no War Trials are you kidding?  Why do I actually read any of your comments.
I find it hard to understand that "BALLETS" that were found in the trunk of somebodies car trunk a week AFTER the election (and never verified cast on election day) would actually be concidered legitimate let alone legal. AL FRANKEN is just AL GORE with glasses. I guess guys named AL are just really bad LOSERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
If Franken wins, the recount is justifiable.  I'm not necessarily for Franken but in close elections, great effort should be exerted to count every vote.  If one vote is not properly counted, how can we be certain our indvidual vote was properly counted?
Republicans will try to steal ANY office, no matter how small.  It DOES help to have a brother in power in the state in question, and I am not sure that Coleman has that.  Another good thing to have is no conscience and a leaning toward criminality (see George W. Bush).  We as a nation have all seen who tries to steal elections, and it ain't Democrats.  If all votes were counted in the beginning, Franken would have been in the lead.  I feel that Minnesota will do this thing as fairly as it can be done and that it will work out no matter who wins.  It would have been nice if Florida would have had the propensity for honesty and detail that Minnesota has.  It would have saved us a lot of money.
Darrell Walker is mad the Democrats are stealing another one....

Greg Remmington and MikeBarr are convinced the Rebuplicans are trying to cheat...

Don't you people have anything better to do than sit around and hate another group of Americans who hold slightly different views of each other.

I guess this is social progress... instead of discriminating based on race, religion and sex, we still hate just as before. We just find other ways to classify people.

Get a life...
It's amusing how whiny Dems complain for years about the Reps 'stealing elections' but they are just fine and dandy when one of their own does it... Just shows it's about one of their own winning and not about anything remotely resembling integrity on their parts. Of course 'integrity' isn't usually in most Democrat's vocabulary anyways so that not exactly a surprise...
The Ral Issue to be addressed, who authorized the Excu's $1,6 billion freebie hand out. How far and how much depth is this corruption going to be allowed to continue? The scam and scum bags now taking food and homes away from the people, Yet no one or group Voice their rage. The tax dollar is the peoples money! This is the height of shame, this is nothing more than rewarding a criminal.
I will hope that all Washington self serving useless paper hangers rot in hell!!!!!!!!!
Why is it that Democrats insist on recounting until they get the results they want?
Seriously, are you moronic liberals really so stupid that you are going to still believe that 1) Bush will be tried for War Crimes and 2) that Franken is not a moron?

Al Franken is not funny, but he IS a joke. A joke on the election process (I personally know out-of-state voters who voted for that moron...yes, the people I personally know are morons as well), a joke as a senator, and a joke to the people of Minnesota and the USA.  If there is a god (and there isn't), he would get an aggressive form of cancer and be dead in a year.
I would consider Franken a joke if he weren't such a hateful creep. We can only hope that he is stopped from joining the United States Senate where he could do more damage to the American image of truth than he already has.  He's nothing but a lying, sleazy jerk! If they do elect him, then they deserve what they get.  I mean...first Jesse Venture, now Al.  Get serious for a change.
democrats will stop at nothing to create votes where they don't exist...who are the real cheaters? who REALLY steal elections? do your  homework people!...read the facts!....don't be naive...democrats have stolen several elections in the last forty years. whine, whine, whine, and blame bush for everything and hide under that mantle - you merely come across as ignorant and cynical. merry christmas.
