Fitzgerald asks for extension to indict

Posted: Wednesday, December 31, 2008 12:15 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC's Domenico Montanaro
U.S. Attorney Patrick Fitzgerald has asked for an extension to indict Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich, AP reports.

The extension would give Fitzgerald another 90 days, and would take this into April.

That can't be helpful for Senate leadership looking to block Blagojevich's appointment of Roland Burris to fill the vacant Illinois Senate seat. It would have been a lot easier to say this was the appointment made by a governor under "indictment" rather than a "cloud of suspicion."

Personally, I findnothing wrongwith Burris, whoever names him.  He seems to be solid and reputable.I think the Senate should take him.
It appears to me that Fitz has a really weak case, unless ones freedom of speech is now a crime. It's rather interesting that someone can be arrested for what they said over the phone.Unless they find proof he took anything or gained anything I think this witch hunt is about over.Of coarse as long as Fitz works for the justice dept, and his boss is still GWB they will continue to try to slam this guy.If he's guilty throw the book at him,if he's not, get out your check book because I'm sure he will sue the government.
Yesterday I watched Michelle Bernard interview Mr Burris.  Go Michelle!!! Good interview.  I hope MSNBC will give Michelle more interviews.  Mika, I can do without.  Seems to want to start gossip all the time.  Don't watch Joe & Mika.  Michelle is a classy woman, who I feel deserves more air time!!!  Just my opinion!!!!
Pity Fitzgerald wasn't fired when W got rid of the really good attorneys!  Speaks volumns as far as I'm concerned.

NO extension Fitzgerald!  Get on with it!  Either you have proof, or you DON"T!

Blago loves it, and is calling the bluff!  Who will blink?
Shocking...last command from the Bush DOJ is too run this issue out as long as possible...Barry should fire Fitzgerald on January 21st along with the other 92 clowns shrub appointed...
We're walking in a winter wonderland up here.

CA, to add to your earlier post talking about election night; last weekend I googled "Election Night Coverage" or something like that and spent a few hours looking at all the different anchors who were on air that night.

And without a doubt, MSNBC's coverage was truly stellar. Listen to Chris Matthews just before the election was finally called for Barack Obama. He was mesmerizing. Eugene Robinson, Pat Buchanan, Rachel Maddow - and David Gregory - when @ 11:00 pm he handed it over to Keith to call it for Obama - man, we waited so long for that moment and Keith & Co. I have to say rose to the occasion. It was a very special night.

2009 is now upon us. We will have a new President before we know who the Super Bowl Champion is. And a great many of us will have for the first time in our lives, a president who is younger than we are.

Time goes on. Happy New Year everyone!
I just can't understand why anyone would accept the  senate seat from Blago.  Regardless of how clean your record is, it can't look good.  Not to mention the fact that it was stated prior to the Rogue Governor filling the vacant seat, that his appointee, would not be seated.  My final point.  KNOWING that his appointee would not be seated, ...how can race now become an issue??  I mean seriously... Clearly it was stated repeatedly that any appointment made by Blago would not be recognized prior to him choosing Burris.  Now someone pulls out the race card.  I am so over the race card issue.  Certainly it is something that will never go away in my lifetime.  IT is so overplayed.  Before anyone reads more into this post other than its actual intent, I voted for Obama...
This means only one thing: Fitz is losing control of the case. Either he and his team jumped the gun and went for the kill before the legal stuff was finished as to whether the wiretaps were good to use in the case, or someone who promised to talk to Fitz suddenly decided to shut up.

On second thought.....

Maybe the Senate should accept Burris
He does have a clean record
He seems qualified
Nobody's come up with been any dirt on him

Maybe let Blago 'win' this one

Burris seems otherwise qualified
(if over ambitious)

Why wouldn't they? It's the Chicago and Illinois way. Corrupt is as corrupt does. In fact, it appears the only one doing their job in Illinois is Blagojevich. The Illinois state House was going to take the appointment power away from Blagojevich by passing a veto proof majority bill that would have let the voters decide. The House quit on that bill early though because the Democrats in Illinois didn't want to risk that the People of Illinois might vote in a Republican. The state of Illinois AG wanted to have Blagojevich removed from office, but failed in her efforts in the Illinois SC. Impeachment hearings are stalled in the Illinois House. The House probably doesn't have the votes to impeach Blagojevich anyway. Honor among Thieves.

So the only one left that appears to be doing his job is Blagojevich.

That's the thing with Democrats. With all their moral relativism, they can justify anything. Just need to keep parsing it down until it all makes sense. They learned that from Billy C.
Give him the extension he wants.

Let's all say it together. "Indict, indict, indict."

Hey, way back when they would have hung this guy in about 3 days.

And Tatter Nelson in MN, 1:28 PM: Great reply!
*Patti Lewis, Chicago*

I guess I question Burris accepting the position knowing that chances are strong he may be "unseated".  So why waste your time.   Not to mention, the majority of people will look at him (burris) and automatically think "Check Cleared".  Lastly...If personal honor and integrity matter, & Burris is as squeaky clean as everyone says...why align yourself with someone whom clearly doesn't know the definition of these words.
Asking for a 90-day extension doesn't necessarily mean Fitz has a weak case. Just the opposite. It probably means he has so much evidence of corruption (documents, wiretaps, interviews, etc.) he hardly knows what to do with it all.

As almost anyone who lives in Illinois -- and particularly those who work for the state or know people who do -- can tell you, the Senate seat "auction" is just the tip of the iceberg. People have been coming out of the woodwork in droves since his arrest to tell the feds what's really going on, and it's going to take time to sort it all out.

I believe that when the indictment comes, it is likely to be massive... dozens of counts carrying (theoretically) hundreds of years of potential prison time.  And the indictments are not going to be just against Blago but very likely against his wife (for questionable real estate deals) and several of his aides.
Just let Mayor Daily appoint the seat. He runs the state anyway.  A Daily will be the Chicago Mayor for as long as he and his sons want the Job.
Hey, let the appointment of Burris go through.  He meets all of the qualifications and the governor is still innocent until proven guilty.  Why is he still sitting?  Until he is removed he should do his job.  The spectacle should not have been made by arresting him until evidence for indictment was available.
Everybody is presumed innocent untill proven guilty. Under this premace Blago was correct in appointing who he did. Not to mention everybody is assured of a speedy trial. Looks like the government bungled one more issue before their term expired. Move on, obviously there is no case against Blago.
PLEASE,find a better place to report from in Hawaii then the BEACH,like the shed in Crawford that made a wonderful bqackdrop and I wasn't afraid of what I might see walking past the camera. The beach scene is a terrible distraction from the news being reported.
wow first post some person writes: " Personally, I findnothing wrongwith Burris, whoever names him.  He seems to be solid and reputable.I think the Senate should take him. "

Guy know so little about him that he doesn't even know his name and yet is confident that he's " solid and reputable "

Need I even ask who this person voted for during the Presidential election?

So very sad.

Having read quite a few of these MSNBC First Read posts, I see it is little more than a sounding board for Obamapologists who externalize the blame for all misdeeds, perceived or real, that may be connected with Obama. The so-called open minded, inclusive, non-judgmental, politically correct Democrats on this site are as hate filled as any skinhead. I am bracing myself for four years of fingerpointing where every unfulfilled promise and failure of Obama is quickly dismissed as 1) All Bush’s fault or 2) The vast right wing racist conspiracy against Obama.  The gutless media will always walk on eggshells before criticizing any minority, especially one they helped to elect to assuage their closet-racist guilt. Keep these facts in mind Obama lovers: the state of Illinois is the most politically corrupt in the nation. There has not been a Republican  Chicago mayor in over 75 years thanks to the rigged jobs-for-votes patronage system run by the Cook (Crook) County Democratic Machine. If you don’t believe it exists look up the indicted assistant to Chicago’s corrupt Democratic Mayor Daley, Robert Sorich, caught with a list of almost 5,000 names of political hires. Remember lefty libs, liberalism contains the seeds of its own destruction. When the true hardcore leftists take over, you loudmouth activists, trial lawyers, academics, media talking heads, and professional protesters are the first ones they round up for the re-education camps.

Squeeky clean! I thought he was good friends with Blago infact didn't he donate $15k to Blago campaign
Thats not clean.
Chuck my man, Happy New Year!
Keith great guy, Happy new Year!
Rachael Madow , Happy New Year
Mika,Happy new year
Joe, I hope you change for the best!
No Extension! Everybody is presumed innocent until proven guilty as well as a speedy trial. Unfortunatly Blago has already been tried and convicted in the press and public. Why do government officials feel they "must" circumvent established proceedure/law when ever it suits them. Let Blago alone, you already blew it.
To Jesse in St. Paul! Fitsgerald is an honorable man and actually does not care who the president is. Have you forgotten the Scotter Libby case..Vice president Cheneys man who put Valerie Plane in danger? Read up about Fitzgerald and see who all he prosecuted. I hope this man gets to stay at the job, we need more man like him to put the bad guys away!
