About those 650 Minnesota ballots...

We noted earlier this week that Norm Coleman's campaign hopes to convince state officials to reconsider about 650 additional rejected absentee ballots in the Minnesota recount, citing a lack of uniformity in county-by-county reviews of the ballots. The Coleman team asked the Minnesota Supreme Court on Wednesday to halt the current counting of the ballots throughout the state and restart it in St. Paul under the watch of both campaigns as well as state officials. Both campaigns are still awaiting word on that decision today.

But what are the 650 additional ballots that Team Coleman would like to see added to the pile? A snapshot from the state's most populous county shows that they apppear to swing heavily in the Republicans' favor.

A First Read analysis of the rejected absentee ballots from Hennepin County that the Norm Coleman campaign wants added to a state review found that 83% of them were from areas of the county that Coleman won in November.  Democrat Al Franken won the county by 14 percentage points, 50%-36%.

The Coleman campaign proposed counting 173 additional ballots from Hennepin County, about a quarter of the 650 they want added statewide. But of those 173, 144 are from towns and cities in which Coleman won the majority of votes in the precincts that comprise them.

The Coleman team has repeatedly said that the ballots, which remain sealed, were selected for reconsideration because of inconsistencies in each county's procedure for evaluating rejected absentees.

The Franken campaign also hopes to add a smaller number of rejected absentee ballots to the pile. A spokesperson says that their requested additional ballots -- which originally numbered between 100 and 200 but may have been reduced during the ongoing recount process  -- are backed up by evidence from voters that demonstrates why they were improperly rejected.

** UPDATE ** Coleman spokesman Mark Drake sends this response: “The Franken campaign isn’t interested in counting all lawful votes.  Earlier this week, the Franken campaign admitted they only want to consider the original 1350 rejected absentees because according to Franken attorney Marc Elias, they were ‘confident that if all those were counted we would gain even more votes.’ This is the same campaign that once claimed to want every vote counted, but now that they have an artificial lead is fine with disenfranchising hundreds of Minnesota voters.  We have found hundreds of ballots that were likely rejected improperly, and we are seeking to ensure that the same standards for counting these ballots are applied statewide.”

I am ready to take people like Franken, Coleman,  the Gov. of Illinois, the Dems wishing to block the appointment of Burris, the Republicans leaving Washington during the inaugeration, Pelosi, Reid,  the Republican leadership(if there is any), Congressional members and any members of the media  who continue to report boring stories over and over again, and ship all their a--es off to some far off island where the natives don't mind being inundated with stupidity, arrogance, miscounduct, lack of team play and all those other adjectives that describe people who seem to have a habit of getting on other's nerves.
Just stop playing games and certify the election, already. This has gotten more ridiculous as the days wear on. At this rate they will still be fooling around, counting ballots on New Years Day 2010.
Jeez - will it ever end?  Seems that Minnesota is really having a hard time.  Ya think!!
Looks like Norm got a brand new cherry picker for Xmas.
All we ask are three things.

1. Count them all.
2. Count them once.
3. Count them right.

Thank you.
Looks like Norm got a brand new cherry picker for Xmas.
I hope the MN Supreme Court finds that ALL rejected absentee ballots -- regardless of which counties they came from -- should be re-examined, and any ballots that were rejected erroneously should be added to the count. It's so close that to ignore any ballots taints the "final" count.

SoS' of all 50 states have a big job on their hands fixing our election system. EVERY vote should count, and these recounts call into serious question the validity of any and all cases where the vote was close. Whether or not they actually do anything about it is another matter...
God, I hate Republicans!  Norm Coleman is just the latest example of a liar and a cheat who epitomizes their Party's inherent, rotting, moral bankruptcy.

For the past 30 years--at almost every opportunity--they have violated the principles of our Constitution, gutted our economy, and transformed our democracy into a corporatocracy ruled by the selfish and the greedy.

If you meet one of these traitors on the streets, show them the soles of your shoes.
Don't you just love it when the "righteous" Republicans speak out and knowing how the past eight years have seen the Republican brand being the most unethical and corrupt in modern times. Even after the smashing the Party took in the past election, their despicable ways remain unchanged. It must be an attention deficit deficiency.
Is this a great country or what?? Never a dull moment.
Al Franken is qualified and I hope he wins so we can have some humor in Washington. Laughter helps break down barriers and  brings people closer.  Your never know.....Once we start  laughing together we might start working together.  Or is that joke??
Coleman is trying to add absentee ballots that were rejected because they did not meet the standards for such that exist in state law.  And he has picked out ones in area where he is expected to gain votes.  This is clear fraud.
I think the Minnesota Supreme Court decision on the absentee ballot counting was bizarre and pathetic.  The Court ruled that both the Franken and Coleman campaign must agree on an absentee ballot for it to be counted. That's nonsense  - why should they have to agree for a vote to be counted?  It just inivites partisan nonsense, with each side trying to gain an advantage by refusing to agree to count ballots in areas where they underperformed.

State law in Minnesota is very clear. There are 4 reasons why an absentee ballot can be disqualified.  Otherwise, the ballot should be counted.  The Court should have simply required that local election officials review all the disqualified absentee ballots to ensure that the ballots were properly disqualified and identify which of the 4 reasons the particularly ballot was disqualified for.  They should then count the votes of any ballots that were wrongly disqualified.  End of story.

For the good of this Nation, Coleman should concede.  But since when have Republicans ever done anything for the good of this Nation?
Why should Al Franken get to count the votes he sees fit and not the 650 ballots that the Coleman campaign is inquiring about?

The hope this is over soon.  Come on MN State Supreme Court, tell both these bozos to take the ballots and count them all then leave any disputed ballots for an independant panel to decide (with no mouthing off from Coleman or Franken or their campaigns).
Look, if we can teach a bear how to skate we can recount with all praties present intelligently.  This kind of fighting and confusion and law suits and pissy fights is immature of our leaders and getting boring...come on, figure it out and announce a winner...for crying out loud, enough already.  The GOP of late appear as whiners and complainers...if it is legitimate, count it and move on...if not, fix it so it is fair but do not create hold ups just because...this is a country we are running, not a rehearsal for some play...get serious, take your thumbs out of your mouths and grow up.  Enough.
