Richardson withdraws name for cabinet

Posted: Sunday, January 04, 2009 3:18 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC’s Domenico Montanaro
Bill Richardson
has withdrawn his name from nomination for Commerce Secretary, citing an ongoing grand jury investigation in his home state. (See statement obtained first by NBC's Andrea Mitchell below.)

NBC’s Lisa Myers reported last month: “The allegations now being investigated by a federal grand jury involve whether Richardson as governor steered state bond business to a firm whose founder made substantial contributions to Richardson's political action committee. Two former state officials involved in the bond deals told NBC News that they testified before a grand jury in Albuquerque last week. One official says prosecutors focused on whether Richardson or staff pushed to give business to CDR Financial Products. It specifically asked about what's called pay to play.”

Lisa Myers on NBC's Nightly News: Donor to Richardson under investigation

President-elect Obama announced Richardson as his pick for Commerce Secretary on Dec. 3rd, but news of the investigation surfaced a couple of weeks later.

This marks the first real bump in Obama’s transition. Up to this point, appointments have gone almost flawlessly -- despite hand wringing from liberal interest groups that Obama’s cabinet doesn’t have enough of this or that.

Obama put out a statement expressing “deep regret” at Richardson’s decision. He calls him “an outstanding public servant” and credits him with wanting to “put the nation first” by removing his name. He also expresses a measure of confidence in Richardson’s innocence in saying that he looks “forward to future service to our country and in my administration.”

Richardson put out a lengthier statement and avows his innocence: “Let me say unequivocally that I and my Administration have acted properly in all matters and that this investigation will bear out that fact. But I have concluded that the ongoing investigation also would have forced an untenable delay in the confirmation process. Given the gravity of the economic situation the nation is facing, I could not in good conscience ask the President-elect and his Administration to delay for one day the important work that needs to be done.”

Full statement from Obama:
It is with deep regret that I accept Governor Bill Richardson's decision to withdraw his name for nomination as the next Secretary of Commerce. Governor Richardson is an outstanding public servant and would have brought to the job of Commerce Secretary and our economic team great insights accumulated through an extraordinary career in federal and state office. It is a measure of his willingness to put the nation first that he has removed himself as a candidate for the Cabinet in order to avoid any delay in filling this important economic post at this critical time. Although we must move quickly to fill the void left by Governor Richardson's decision, I look forward to his future service to our country and in my administration.

Full statement from Richardson:
“For nearly three decades, I have been honored to serve my state and our nation in Congress, at the U.N., as Secretary of Energy and as governor.  So when the President-elect asked me to serve as Secretary of Commerce, I felt a duty to answer the call. I felt that duty particularly because America is facing such extraordinary economic challenges. The Department of Commerce must play an important role in solving them by helping to grow the new jobs and businesses America so badly needs.

“It is also because of that sense of urgency about the work of the Commerce Department that I have asked the President-elect not to move forward with my nomination at this time. I do so with great sorrow. But a pending investigation of a company that has done business with New Mexico state government promises to extend for several weeks or, perhaps, even months.

“Let me say unequivocally that I and my Administration have acted properly in all matters and that this investigation will bear out that fact. But I have concluded that the ongoing investigation also would have forced an untenable delay in the confirmation process.Given the gravity of the economic situation the nation is facing, I could not in good conscience ask the President-elect and his Administration to delay for one day the important work that needs to be done.

“So, for now, I will remain in the job I love, Governor of New Mexico, and will continue to work every day, with Lieutenant Governor Diane Denish, to make a positive difference in the lives of New Mexicans. I believe she will be a terrific governor in the future. I appreciate the confidence President-elect Obama has shown in me, and value our friendship and working partnership. I told him that I am eager to serve in the future in any way he deems useful. And like all Americans, I pray for his success and the success of our beloved country.”

Ha!!  This shows it does not pay to be an opportunistic Weasel!  What goes around.......
Thank you Governor Richardson for your consideration of our dear country.

I wish you well and hope things work out for you.!!!!
The corruption in the Democrat party is over whelming
If he won't/can't serve as Sec. of Commerce, why doesn't he resign the Governorship of NM??
BILL RICHARDSON WITHDRAWS HIS NOMINATION UNDER A GRAND JURY INVESTIGATION.
IS OBAMA'S DREAM TEAM CABINET STARTING TO CRUMBLE EVEN BEFORE HIS INAUGURATION?
IT DIDN'T TAKE THE DEMOCRATS LONG TO DISPLAY THERE CRUDE --- AND THE REPUBS HAVE HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH IT!

TOMORROW IN THE SENATE WE WILL SEE THE SPECTACLE OF BURRIS TRYING TO ENTER THE U.S. SENATE THROUGH THE SEWER SYSTEM CALLED "BLAGO."

ARE WE IN FOR 4 YEARS OF A POLITICAL CIRCUS?
we now need Hilary Clinton to pull out, due to her support of the "green bonds" while her husband got $100,000 for his foundation !
MMMMMM Sweet sweet revenge.
At least we have an elected official that is honest
UMMMMMMM Whers the change?  Looks like same old bullcrap.
Crooked S O B - always bad mouthing others. Hope they indict him.
Of course he says he acted properly! Have you ever heard a politician admit guilt when first accused of corrupt political practices?
You doo you mean censorship, not approval, of people's opinions right?
ANd he had the gall to criticize Dick Cheney. There is not an honest polititian.
see you can't trust a democrat for anything
I love all this CHANGE.
Et Tu Bill?

It's certainly the the right thing to do, withdrawing from the nomination.  PE Obama can move on to select someone else.

We all know that the Repukes will jump on this and try to make political hay.  No way are the Democrats as currupt as the Repukes who have been in power for so many years!  Can't wait until the scabs are pulled off of all the Repukes.

Good Luck Gov!
Thank you Governor Richardson for your show of character. I am praying that all things will work together for the good of our country. I wish you well and pray for your strength as you go through this season of controversy.  This too shall pass.
Why the rush to judgement?  Let's wait until the facts are made public and then make a decision/  Governor Richardson is among the top govenors so we must allow the investigation to be concluded and the fact to be born out.
You need to find out about Mrs Clinton under the table dealing
I think this is a treand that is going to happen to Obama a lot. Get Used to it!!
You need to find out about Mrs Clinton under the table dealing
Just another dishonest creep
This comes not long after the former Majority Leader of the New Mexico State Senate plead guilty to bribery. It is further indication that our state government badly needs strong ethics reform legislation, - which our state legislature has been reluctant even to consider in previous sessions.
It would seem that Governor Richardson is a man of honor and principals, I hope it works out well for him.
Love all this CHANGE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Perhaps President-Elect Obama will have the foresight and the courage to re-examine "Quid Pro Quo" laws and discover what we (taxpayers) all know.  That is that financial authorizations are made and contributions are made day in and day out based on the rules of "Pay-to-Play".  Just the opposite of "QPQ" laws in order to get around the law.  The simple fact remains that these transactions are nothing more than payoffs to politicians.  Afterall, money, power and influence is far more desirable than values, eithics, integrity and protecting the public's pocketbook.  Just look at the current economic mess that we, our children and grand children will be paying for well into the future.  All becuase of semantics over "QPQ".
What goes up must come down. This is the nature's law of gravity. Richardson tried to become Secretary of State by back stabbing Hillary Clinton. Time has now come to send him to jail for his "pay to play" games.
YEP! Nixon, Clinton, the Governor of Illinois, the Mayor of Detroit and a host of other Government officals all claim "I didn't do it, I am not guilty".
Greed,Greed,Greed...vote them all out of office!
It's best to let the investigation handle the situation; whether or not the end results is positive or negative.  However, I commend Governor Bill Richardson for placing the Country first before his nomination.  The Country comes first, regardless!

Already this administration has, as did the presidential race (cf. Ayers, Dorn, Blagoyavic et al), criminality imbedded within it.  How promising!  How sad for America!
Just another bad seed ripped up before the harvest that has become "Obama's America" How long is the list of questionable servants to our great nation. Left, right  and center. As a past military (honored) servant myself I am sick, and find it hard to trust the leaders of these United States
Now that Richardson was forced to withdraw for alleged misdeeds, could Hillary be next?  If the answer is yes, then maybe we might get some true progressives and not Clinton retreads in positions of power.

For those who thought that Obama might lose support in the Hispanic community for bypassing Richardson for Secretary of State, I guess that concern is now out the window.
Our Government seems to be embroiled in a "Culture of Corruption" which transcends political party affiliation.
Of coure the hate mongers will like this, but I am willing to wait and see what happens.  Nothing must deter Obama from his course.

It is the Clinton machine working again. It is       just the firt there is more .......
If, as Obama says "Richardson is an outstanding public servant" then why is he being investigated by a federal jury? Sounds like the song, Another One Bites The Dust.
I think if they dig deeper into Richardson there is more! Pay to play is hudge in the southwest and it knows no one party.
Tough luck for us New Mexicans just when we thought he was leaving the state.  This type of politics moved to a new level under his governorship and I thought he was going to get away with it.  Thanks to federal officials for looking into his activities, someone up there takes integrity seriously.
Well that sucks but I understand his reasons. I think it's rather patriotic that he would bow out of the position rather than impede the administration.

For all you freeptards that are about to post how delighted that the Obama administration's corruption has been exposed and how Bill Richardson is a crook, Go crawl back into your cave, cling to your bibles and guns, crack open a six-pack and tune into Rush Limbaugh. Maybe you'll feel better about yourselves.
New Mexico is like Illinois when it comes to politics. It's ashame Richardson got caught up in it to but it was expected.  And whomever thinks that political contributions aren't pay to play needs to lay off the tequila.  Wake up America...we are corrupt period!

If our president elect nominated you, then stand strong and defend yourself
I hope for everyones sake, this is the only trouble this cabinet has.  Our country cannot afford any ill wishes for this administration!  Let us work to put this country together. Let us not tear it apart.
Was only a matter of time... Richardson couldn't get out of New Mexico fast enough before getting his hand caught in the cookie jar. Just like the state treasurer and state senate leader and a lot of other corrupt New Mexico state officials.
Well, as a Dem he tried to act like a RINO and make loot for New Mex...must of got a good look at how much he made.

How'd that last stint working for Ol'Bubba work out for you Billy?
I think Denise, in Missouri City, Texas should check herself.  Name calling is not needed and instead of putting someone else down for being forthright, look at our country and the state it is in and try to help find a way out of this mess.

Governor Richardson may or may not be guilty of the crimes he is charged with.  Modern day politicians usually forget that they are roll models.  When they do something that appears to be wrong even if it can be justified as legal under the law, they should not do it.  The American people already have very low opinions of those we place in government to represent us.  The problem is that they behave differently after they are elected than as candidates asking for your vote!
It's ironic that even before this president is sworn into office he is suffering collatoral damage from the Democrat's own and longstanding "Culture of Corruption" (Thanks Ms Pollosi for failing to look in the mirror). I personally think the governor is a good man, but the party has been corrupt for decades. Sadly, the Republicans did a far too successful imitation in their short era of control. No one's honest anymore.
you can say that again obama your next to go away. you were the worst pick of the litter so far
