Congress: Mr. Burris goes to DC

The man embattled Gov. Rod Blagojevich chose to succeed Obama in the Senate -- Roland Burris -- today heads to Washington. Yesterday, the Chicago Tribune writes, Burris “sought spiritual and political sustenance tonight at a church on Chicago's South Side. Warm words of support and prayers for Roland Burris at New Covenant Church contrasted with the frigid reactions from Senate leaders, many of whom say his appointment by embattled Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich is so badly stained that Burris shouldn't be seated when the new Congress convenes this week.”

“Burris took the church stage to a crescendo of drums, organ music and applause from hundreds of supporters, including black leaders and ministers. ‘The appointment is legal,’ he said, thanking those gathered at the prayer service. ‘That is all there is. I don't know what all the confusion is about.’ Before the service, Burris supporter U.S. Rep. Bobby Rush (D-Ill.) and about 60 ministers condemned Senate Democratic leaders for rejecting Burris. Rush, a Chicago Democrat, called the U.S. Senate ‘the last bastion of plantation politics.’ ‘We are just faced with a hard-headed room of people in the Senate who want to keep an African-American out of the Senate,’ Rush said.”

“Senate Majority Leader Harry M. Reid defended his right to block the Senate appointment of former Illinois attorney general Roland W. Burris, but he didn't close the door entirely to Burris eventually getting the job,” the Washington Post notes.

Here’s what Reid said on Meet:
MR. GREGORY: But are you willing to go to the mat on this to deny Roland Burris, if it requires going to the Supreme Court? Is it worth that effort?
SEN. REID: The state of Illinois deserves a vote in the United States Senate, and the people of the state of Illinois, the fifth most populous state in the union, deserve that vote. It's too bad Blagojevich has diverted attention from the real issue. And we'll--we're--as I've indicated, we're going to come--I'm going to meet with Senator McConnell, my Republican counterpart. I hope to do that Monday evening. I think it's around 6:00 or something like that. We'll talk about this. I hope we can solve this issue on a bipartisan basis.
MR. GREGORY: But there sounds to me like there may be some room here to negotiate and actually seat Burris?
SEN. REID: Hey, listen, David, I'm an old trial lawyer. There's always room to negotiate.
MR. GREGORY: All right, so you're not saying no completely that he won't serve?
SEN. REID: That's right

How would the logistics work if Democrats tried to block Burris from the Senate seat? "Senate officials involved in the tangle of legal and logistical planning said yesterday that a Democrat will object to Burris being duly sworn with the rest of his class, and propose that his credentials be reviewed by the Rules Committee," the AP reports. "The only way Burris will be allowed on the floor is if he possesses a certification of appointment signed personally by his embattled patron, Blagojevich, and Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White, who has refused to sign. Burris would then be treated as a senator-elect, which by tradition means he'll be allowed on the Senate floor without voting or speaking privileges -- and he wouldn't be granted a desk, according to the officials."

The New York Times: “Aides to Mr. Burris, a former Illinois attorney general who seemed to end his political career years ago after several defeats in his efforts to become governor of Illinois, have indicated that they were trying to talk to Senate leaders privately and wanted to avoid any public showdown.”

Here are some of the dates for the upcoming Senate confirmation hearings:
-- Thursday, Jan. 8, 10:00 am ET: HHS: Tom Daschle (Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee)
-- Friday, Jan. 9, 9:30 am ET: Rep. Hilda Solis (HELP Committee)
-- Tuesday, Jan. 13, 10:00 am ET: Education: Arne Duncan (HELP Committee)
-- Jan. 13: Energy Secretary: Steven Chu (Energy and Natural Resources Committee)
-- Jan. 14: Veteran Affairs: Gen. Eric Shinseki (Veterans' Affairs Committee)
-- Jan. 15: Interior: Senator Ken Salazar (Energy and Natural Resources Committee)
-- Jan. 15: Attorney General: Eric Holder (Judiciary Committee)

The New York Times has a fascinating profile of Nancy Pelosi as she prepares to play second fiddle Dem to Obama. "Aides and advisers say Ms. Pelosi is more than willing to follow Mr. Obama’s lead and has already demonstrated a willingness to defer to him even on an issue of high import to her. While Ms. Pelosi has said she would prefer a quick legislative repeal of the Bush administration’s restrictions on embryonic stem cell research, she indicated that she would go along if Mr. Obama chooses to act more quickly through executive order.”

“Yet tensions with the White House — even a White House run by one’s own party — are inevitable as situations arise where the administration and members of Congress have conflicting priorities. Congressional Democrats and President Bill Clinton struggled at times during the two years that Democrats controlled Congress in the Clinton years. Even President Bush and Congressional Republicans clashed despite the willingness of those on Capitol Hill to give way regularly to the administration."

Rangel Watch: Charlie Rangel is still defending himself from allegations of fundraising improprieties. Given the Blagojevich situation and now the Richardson chatter, is Rangel even in more trouble? Will he have to temporarily give up his Ways and Means gavel at this critical time?

It may be time to revisit Harry Reids pay-to-play dealings where he made a cool million dollars in a  land deal in the late '90s back in Nevada. Once we do that, then Mr. Reid may not be so pompus in putting down the corrupt pols coming out of Illinois.
What a clown show we're going to be treated to this week by the Democrats. It will be so much fun watching the all white Senate Democrats blocking a black man from entering their sacred chamber. You just know all the reverend/politicians from Illinois are getting their plane tickets to come out to Washington to protest for Burris's entrance at the Senate door. Maybe we'll see Harry Reid turn the fire house on Burris and company?
Rush, a Chicago Democrat, called the U.S. Senate ‘the last bastion of plantation politics.’ ‘We are just faced with a hard-headed room of people in the Senate who want to keep an African-American out of the Senate,’ Rush said.”
now lets remember bobby rush was a black panther, he is using a platform that should not be used any more, bobby, we will have a black president, so the last bastion of plantation politics was the president of the united states. bobby, i'm glad you have survived the cancer and you are healthy now, but you need to shut the HELL up on this kind of racial crap.
now a little history
Barack ran for congress against bobby rush.
bobby rush once call barack a educated fool and said he was not black enough.
bobby rush endorsed barack's senate opponent in the primary back in 2004(a white man) now bobby, you did not think the great need for a black man in the senate back in 2004, why the hell do you care if a black man is in the senate now. you did not care back in 2004.
the governer has pimped the black folks in this one. he is using burris to draw blacks to want only a black to keep that seat against any white or hispanic
as a black man this is wrong, and stupid for burris, rush, and the other black goofs to be pulled in to this garbage.
they should know better
First of all, Bobby Rush, a former Black Panther, supported Barack Obama's challenger in 2004 who just happens to be a caucasian.  At that time, there was no African American in the Senate either.  Considering he has pledged to "fight for African American causes" why did he support the caucasian canidate.

I am Multi-Racial and believe that since Mr Rush, injected Race into the discussion, he should be asked this question.  What was different in 2004 that caused you to support a caucasian running for the sentate in 2004 when a African-American (although Bi-racial) candidate was running in the Senate race?

Chuck Todd and Andrea Mitchell should be professional enought to have this congressman answer that question rather than allow him to falsely inject race into the Blago appointment. OBVIOUSLY, it was not a concern to him in 2004.  Make him explain himself.
We can nitpick this whole thing all we want, and while we do, it's just one less vote in the Senate for the democrats.  Keep your eyes on the prize, everyone.
It amazes me the level of flip-flopping on this issue on this board.  Two weeks ago everyone was saying "DON'T SEAT ANYONE BLAGO APPOINTS!" and cheering for his impeachment, not to mention his head.  Now all of a sudden, we're supposed to ignore this and seat a person in a position that he would not otherwise have gotten on his own.  And why?  Because he's BLACK?!  And now all of a sudden (thanks largely to MSM sensationalism) this is a RACIAL issue?!  People, I'm dissapointed.  This is PRECISELY the kind of racial politicking that we're supposed to be moving beyond, and the reason I initially supported Hillary in the primary (just because I'm black doesn't mean I have to vote that way).  The IL SoS is black and is refusing to sign onto this.  Obama has called for this man not to be seated.  I don't see why this is a RACIAL issue simply because some who are still looking for the "Whites Only" signs (I'm talking to you, Bobby Rush) choose to play old school racial politics for their own gains.

I'm not saying that Burris isn't qualified.  But that he would take this appointment begs the question of what exactly happened between him and Blago, especially since Burris was calling for his impeachment along with the rest of the Illinois legislature (including Rush).  Bottom line is that there are questions regarding this appointment that should not be simply ignored because some choose to interject race into the equation.

HAPPY NEW YEAR AND WELCOME BACK FOLKS!

15 Days and counting until Inauguration Day!

I don't care what people have said about what an upstanding person Roland Burris is........there's something just not right about him accepting this appointment from a Governor under investigation. WHY would he? Power hungry? He should NOT be seated, although I don't think legally they can stop it.
the governer has pimped the black folks in this one.

jeff D Evanston IL

No, the governor has rewarded the black folks for their loyality to the Democratic party. There are many black folks in Illinois today saying that Blagojevich is a good guy for selecting Burris as Obama's replacement. It may just save Blagojevich's white butt.
Good-Luck Senator Burris. Guilt by association is a nasty rapp to be stuck with.
Of all the political stories going around this season, this one is my favorite.  I just laugh and laugh when I hear about it from the various news sources.  Mr. Burris is correct.  He is legally the junior senator from Illinois.  The govenor has full authority at this time to name Burris as the senator.  What I find hilarous is there isn't a more vetted, exceptional and able candidate than Burris.

Govenor F-word's attorney's made sure of that!

Charges will be hard to stick to the gov. with the excellent choice of senator in Burris.
Burris should wait to take the seat until the Il. governor issue has been resolved (resigns, impeached, or convicted).  If there is some way for Reid and Durbin to come to an understanding with Burris as to when he comes in as well as including the Lt. governor because he would most likely be in charge after this is resolved.
Burris isn't going anywhere. Another atempt by the Dems to use the race card to get someone into office. Political affirmative action by crook Blagojevich.
