Downballot: Paterson on Caroline

Posted: Friday, January 09, 2009 9:09 AM by Domenico Montanaro

MINNESOTA: "Senate Democratic leaders won't shut the door on the possibility of seating Democrat Al Franken before the state of Minnesota issues a certificate declaring a winner in the race," writes CQ. "Majority Leader Harry Reid on Thursday appeared to back away somewhat from his declaration earlier in the week that Franken's term ‘must begin and will begin soon,’ saying that Democrats would ‘be very patient’ with the legal challenge that Republican Norm Coleman is mounting in the Minnesota courts."

NEW YORK: The longer Gov. David Paterson goes without appointing Caroline Kennedy, the less likely she's the pick, right? Paterson’s public utterance yesterday that her legislative inexperience is an issue can't be a good sign.

The New York Times hints that it's possible Andrew Cuomo did NOT send in the paperwork Paterson has asked of all potential Senate candidates. "The governor stressed in interviews on Thursday that he had not made up his mind and that the race was still wide open. Of course, time is running short for the governor, since Mrs. Clinton’s Senate confirmation hearing is scheduled to begin on Tuesday.”

“‘She has pluses and minuses,’ he said of Ms. Kennedy in an interview on WOR radio, adding that she ‘has a tremendous relationship with the president and that’s certainly a plus. She does not have much legislative experience, which is a minus.’”

“He also told The Buffalo News, ‘The notion that I have to take Caroline is not coming from me,’ adding: ‘To the media, it’s Caroline and the others. To me, it’s there are 10 to 15 good candidates.’”

The AP reports that "Kennedy's bid for the Senate has reignited the 'mommy wars' between mothers with careers and those who take a break from paid employment. Like Kennedy, many women face resentment when they return to the work force after raising kids and doing volunteer work."

Still waiting for little Normie Coleman to explain why he hasn't conceded, which he thought Al Franken should do "for the good of Minnesota."  Any journalists out there going to ask him that question?
The sooner Senator Al Franken gets seated the better for passing bills to move our country forward out of the quagmire the bushwhacker has put it in.  I hope that Patterson makes his decision soon on who will replace Hillary.  While Caroline seems to be losing some support she'd still make a far better Senator than any of the repugnant ones who have stunk up Congress the past 28 years.
Paperwork, schmaperwork.  George Bush first showed that the Constitution is nothing but a piece of paper.  That idea seems to be catching on.
And yet The Gift (Sarah Palin) claims that Kennedy is being handled with kid gloves.  Give me a break.

Harry Reid should keep quite about the senate race in Minn. Just wait until all the legal procedures are done and Mr. Franken has been declared the winner before he seats him, no ifs, ands or buts. Then the Republicans would not have have a leg to stand on. Of course that would not stop some people from believing that the people that recounted the votes, and that would include Republicans, Democrats and Independents, all got together and cheated for Al Franken. Impossible!
I think the MSM has the kid gloves on when it comes to Caroline Kennedy.  They went after Sara Palin’s qualifications and family with a vengeance but haven’t said hardly anything about Caroline’s qualifications and nothing about her family.  Like her father was an adulterer and her uncle had killed someone
Sarah Palin gave ANOTHER inane interview last night. What a joke. She was RIGHT about one thing, though....there is a class difference between her and Caroline. Caroline HAS it, Palin doesn't. The more she opens her mouth, the more I hope she stays in the spotlight; she'll keep Democrats in office for many years to come.
Burris and Frankin should be seated. Governor Paterson should probably pick someone other than Caroline Kennedy Shlossberg. While I think Caroline is qualified there must be someone less controversial that Gov. Paterson can select. If Caroline wants the job than she can run for it when the term is up.
