Blago continues fight -- with friends

Posted: Friday, January 09, 2009 3:32 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC's Domenico Montanaro
Women,  minorities, crying babies and a man in a wheelchair served as the backdrop on stage at a news conferenece with embattled Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich, who the Illinois House voted to impeach today, 114-1.

Blagojevich continued to show a defiant confidence in his innocence.

He called the House's decision to impeach him not a surprise.

"This is not something that came as a complete surprise to me," he said, since the state House considered the idea in 2007.

He quoted The Golden Rule ("Do unto others as you would want done onto you") as well as yet another British poet, Tennyson. ("That which we are, we are," he said, quoting Ulysses.)

He discussed how he has pushed the House, for "real and meaningful" housing, for cancer screenings and other policy initiatives.

"Is that an impeachable act?" Blagojevich asked.

He then introduced the constituents standing behind him.

"I have a job to do for the people... they hired me to fight for them."

*** UPDATE *** NBC's Lauren Appelbaum adds that Blagojevich insisted the House had wanted to impeach in 2007 after he called the House into a special session to work on a failed budget.

"Let me say, to begin with, that the House's action today was, of course, not a surprise," he said. "It was a foregone conclusion. So this is not something that came as a complete surprise to me. It happened kind of fast. But, again, kind of expected, and part of the process that has essentially been the dynamic in Illinois, since I was reelected governor in November of 2006."

The governor focused on times where he and the House disagreed on issues, such as healthcare, and repeated that the House's vote of impeachment was because of what he has done "to fight for families." He asserted his work done for the families behind him should not be impeachable acts.

"So we're going to move forward," he said. "And I'm going to continue to fight every step of the way. Let me reassert to all of you, once more, that I am not guilty of any criminal wrongdoing. That issue will be dealt with on a separate course, in an appropriate forum, a federal court. And I'm confident that, at the end of the day, I will be properly exonerated."

He continued, "In the meantime, I have a job to do for the people. They hired me to not just to say that I'm for things that could help them, but they hired me to fight for them. And I'm going to fight for them every step of the way, because if I didn't fight for them, the results that we've provided for people would not have happened."

But Lt. Gov. Pat Quinn said Blagojevich missed the real reason for the impeachment.

"I wish he had resigned today and I think it is unfortunate he did not resign," Quinn said in a press conference less than a half hour after Blagojevich's ended. "There are times in one's life where you have to put your country first, and I think this is time for Blagojevich to reflect on that and do what is best for the common good and not himself."

The House charges don't appear to rise to the level of an impeachable offense. From all accounts the Governor has done an effective job for the people of Illinois.  The touch talk was a little over the top and now the embrassed House sees an opportunity to get rip of him.  The House should get tough on helping the people of Illinois instead of impeaching the Governor.  Blagojevich your initiatives rock! I vote term limits for the House members minus 1
The democrat soilder? Isn't that a oxy moron ?
Why does Illinois continue to elect this kind of person? Don'tcha think they would have learned by now to research candidates and not just go eeenie meenie miney mo? What crook are they going to replace Blago with? What crook will replace Burris on the Illinois scene? Lincoln continues to spin in his grave with such people coming from his home state.
Blago chose the wrong Tennyson. Much better would have been:
The leaves decay, the leaves decay and fall
The vapors weep their burthen to the ground
Man comes and tills the field and lies beneath
And after many a summer dies the swan
People, all of you, Rod Blagojevich is not the problem, he is in a broken system.  If any of you are naive enough to think that Quid PRO Politics does not happen, and he is the first to want a favor in return for an appointment, please just look at Washington DC.  The people driving to impeach him are the same people who want his job.  The Man has not even been charged with a crime, and his opponents are the ones who worked to bag him.  What gets me angry is the people after him think we are stupid enough not to see past their own motivations, what have THEY done for anyone in Illinois.  Thinking of doing something, and actually doing it are two separate matters, he did nothing wrong at all here.  Blagojevich probably did not appoint who everyone in his party was pressuring him to appoint, in this case, I think Lisa Madigan wanted it.  The Attorney General now has her daddy leading the charge to get him out of office so he can pave the way for her to run for Governor.  The fact these people think we are not smart enough to see through all of this sickens me more than anything.  From the statute of the law, The Governor, even if he wanted a political favor, never carried out such an act, therefore, by the law, he committed no crime.  Stop, think, and listen to what is going on, there is more to this than 20 second sound bytes.
He's a joke.  But he joins a growing crowd of nutjob politicos including Larry Craig, Jim McGreevey, and NY's former governor.  His press conference was hilarious.  He sounds like the cartoon mayor on The Simpsons.  Does he have any realization how stupid and arrogant he sounds?
Does anyone else think this is a narcissist with a bipolar disorder deluding himself into thinking he is above all laws and decency?  I think he needs therapy and some good medication. Most ethical people who believe they have been wrongly accused would have resigned and let the truth speak for itself.  I lived in Chicago for 3 mos.... and you know what it just felt like there was an evil undercurrent in the city... now I know I was not imagining it- I am happy to be back in Atlanta where our senators insult Washington D.C. security and claim racism.... long live Politics!!! Lol....

Blago is making his case for an insanity plea.  That was his purpose for the rambling speech today.  People in IL will be glad to finally get rid of Blago.
BURRIS IS COUNTING ON THE "RACE CARD" WINNING FOR HIM!
Govonor Rod was arrested one day After he forced The Bank of America to pay union workers . Why has not anyone has recognized the connection There has not been a Govonor since Altgelt that hascaused the weathy and the Federal Government so much grief . The Fed has brought a  rather weak case against Governor Rod.That is why they are refusing to bring all of their evidance.
