Bush -- wistful, defiant, defensive to end

From NBC's Domenico Montanaro
President George W. Bush struck a wistful and, at times, defensive and defiant tone at a press conference he called the "ultimate exit interview."

"I've had my time in the klieg lights," he said. "You might catch me opining" from time to time, but, he added, he wishes his successor, President-elect Obama "all the very best."

In what is believed to be likely Bush's last press conference as president, he discussed a wide range of topics, including the news of the day (Gaza, the impending stimulus package), as well as reflecting on his legacy and mistakes made.

Video: President Bush says he hopes the tone of Washington is different for his successor and forcefully defends his record, arguing the country is safer because of his time in the White House.

The president's ire went up when pressed about the federal government's response to Hurricane Katrina and whether the United States has lost "moral standing" in the world.

"Don't tell me the federal response was slow, when there were 30,000 people pulled up off roofs," Bush said. "That's a pretty quick response."

He added, "There's more that could have been done, sure."

Bush defended, however, the decision not to land Air Force One in the region, because it would have diverted needed police resources, and then the media would have criticized that, he said.

Defending America's 'moral standing'
On America's image in the world, Bush said, "I strongly disagree that our moral standing has been damaged."

He acknowledged that it "may have been damaged among some of the elite" in Europe, but not with the rest of the world. He said to ask Africa, India and China about America -- that they would see it as a place that promotes freedom.

"Those are few countries" that view the U.S. in a poor light, Bush added. "I disagree that people view America in a dim light. I just disagree with the assessment."

He went on, saying that if he wanted to be popular -- in some parts of Europe, in particular -- he would blame Israel for everything in the Middle East, join the International Criminal Court and support Kyoto -- though he called it flawed.

"I wouldn't worry about popularity," Bush said, adding, "I'm concerned about the country."

'Mission Accomplished,' rhetoric, Abu Ghraib, WMD among mistakes, disappointments
He repeated a list of his mistakes, including the "Mission Accomplished" banner and some of his rhetoric. (In the past, he has cited saying "Dead or Alive.") He listed Abu Ghraib and the non-existence of weapons of mass destruction as disappointments. Bush reiterated his stance that history will judge him, but that there is "no short-term history."

'Israel has a right to defend herself'
On the current fighting in Gaza, he repeated his administration's stance that the U.S. is "for a sustainable ceasefire."

But he said there would not be a sustainable ceasefire if Hamas continues firing rockets into Israel. The president identified smuggling from Egypt as one of the biggest problems and said that working with Egypt is key. He also warned against those who provide arms supplies to Hamas.

Bush reiterated that "Israel has a right to defend herself." He did add, though, that he hopes Israel will be mindful of the innocent. Asked why there was not peace in the region, he said, "That's a good question. ... It's been a long time since there's been peace in the Middle East."

Greatest threats
The president said the greatest threat remains one to the "homeland." He identified North Korea as a great threat because of a potential for a "highly enriched uranium program," though he acknowledged that there is a debate in the intelligence community as to how large a threat it actually is.

"They're still dangerous," Bush said, adding that "Iran is still a threat."

GOP can't be anti-immigrant
On how the Republican Party recovers from defeats in the last two election cycles, he said, "This party will come back, but this party's message should be" one of inclusion. He cited immigration as an example, stressing that the problem is "the image that came out is that Republicans don't like immigrants." Bush said the party "has to be compassionate and broad minded."

He then reflected on the 1964 elections when his father lost a bid for the Senate -- downballot of Lyndon B. Johnson. He cited that in 1966 "there was a resurgence" and said it could happen again.

In defense of the bailout
Bush insisted that the $700 billion bailout was necessary and that it has allowed the financial markets to begin to "thaw."

Hoping for different tone
Bush again also lamented the tone of Washington.

"I hope the tone is different for [Obama] than it is for me," said Bush, who also commented that Obama's swearing in will be "amazing." In Washington, Bush said, there's a lot of "needless namecalling."

"The rhetoric got out of control," he said. "Frankly, for the system itself, I hope that when people disagree with Obama they treat him with respect."

Bush added, "No question there will be critics, and there should be. ... I just hope the tone is respectful; he deserves it, and so does the country."

The media "misunderestimated" Bush?
With relation to the media, Bush left it with one more so-called Bushism.

Bush said he disagreed with some stories that were written, but overall he respected the press -- though he thinks the media, at times, "misunderestimated" him.

Eight days and a wake up.

Thanks for the nightmares, Bush.

Obama, You have your work literally CUT OUT for you.
Thank God its nearly over. It can't come quick enough.Did anyone really think GB would say anything different?Hes right about history he will be judged even harsher as our grandchildren continue to pay for his mistakes just like their parents and grandparents did.GB and all of his followers are people you can't confuse with the facts so don't waste your time. As for me and my friends we are having a BLOP thats a Bush leaving office party.
yes we certainly did "misunderestimate" Bushie. Did he really mean to say that?
I have found in my 25 years as a counselor and psychologist that it is very easy to kick a person when things aren't going good, It takes a much bigger person to acknowledge the good that the man has done. There has not been another attack on this country since 9-11 which I believe is a tribute to the president. It is all of this useless namecalling and sarcastic remarks that keep Washington functioning in this riduculous manner. He was our president for eight years and don't forget that it was the people who put him there regardless of all of the nonsense that took place in Florida. As a retired military person I believe that history will judge George Bush in a much more favorable light than some criticisers are willing to do.
Paul P

How many vets have you talked with?  I have I and know the horrors that are not broadcast on the liberal mainstream networks.....our efforts there are saving the lives of countless of women and children who are murdered without remorse simply because of who they are.  We have made a difference and your attitude is disrespectful to the 4,000 brave young men and women who gave their life to this cause....I am product of what we have done in Iraq!  Go talk to some vets and you will find out what I am talking about
Yes, we really did "misunderestimate" him. did he really mean to say that?
First I want to thank President Bush for serving this country for 8 years.  If you like or dislike a president it's still a tough job, and I wish Obama the best luck (I did not vote for him).

To Ed from San Antonio, please get over the race problem everything that goes wrong for a black person in not a white persons falt.  Hell check the crime stats there are MUCH more black on black crime in this country then white on black.  If you look further there is much more black on white crime also, check your facts before you put your big dumb fingers to work on a comment form.

Now to Ted K. from Hyannis, MA  you hit the nail right on the head, the first response to the Katrina victims should have come from the mayor and the governor of the state, hell the feds were on the way.  These two did NOTHING to help their citizens and then blamed it all on Bush, what a crock!

I feel sorry for all you Bush haters, because when things go bad once Obama is in office who are you going to blame?  What I know lets just keep blaming Bush for everything, it will never be Obama's fault...Why you ask well because the media will never bash him because he's 1/2 black.

Finally, Mr. Obama I did not vote for you because of your policy and programs you want to put into place, but I do wish you the best and I really hope you do a great job the country needs some help right now I hope your up to the challange.
Marcus in Chicago: You are absolutely right when you say that Bush did a lot with regards to helping Aids victims in Africa. However, that's it. That is the only thing in the last 8 years that he has done right? Don't you think it's pretty sad.

Look at the state of our military. Look at the state of our economy. Look at the state of our standing in the world.  Look at the state of New Orleans today. Who is helping to restore New Orleans? harry Connick Jr. and Brad Pitt. That's who. Not Bush. Don't you remember old ma Bush and her remark when she visited the victims in the Houston Astrodome. She actually thought they were better off. That's the trouble with the Bushies. They are rich and comfortable. and their friends are rich and comfortable so that's who they take are of. They don't understand the hardships that normal people have to go through day in and day out. And they don't want to understand.

George W. Bush wanted to be the president to show his daddy that he could be. However, he just didn't want to do the job of the president. He left that to his buddy Chaney.
Thank you for keeping us safe, President Bush.  Everyone seems to think it's a total fluke that we've had no more terrorist attacks.
I just have to shake my head in amazement at all the people still defending the biggest idiot to ever hold public office.

It is just their way of coping with voting for a man that never even had the skill set to be an assistant manager at a Jiffy Lube.

The problem with democracy is that these people will still vote against working class American while all the while not understanding what they are doing.

I don't blame the GOP; I blame the people who continue to drink the Kool-Aide and vote for the Rich Man's party.

Dubya and his bunch have been the most corrupt and irresponsible people to ever hold office in my life time, 50 Years, but if you would have done some research before the 2000 election you would have known what was going to happen.
To Karen, Florence, SC.  I realize the education down South is lacking, but surely even YOU must realize that the nonsense on the White House site you mention was written by the Bush apologists.  And, trust me, they have much to apologize for.

This utter rot about Shrubbie keeping America safe since 9/11 is laughable!  Whose watch was 9/11 on, and who sat there like a dummy for a full nine minutes in dopey silence when informed that 9/11 happened. And then who ran in fear on Air Force One while New York City burned?

As to keeping Americans safe... do you forget the 4000+ that have died as a result of Shrubbies war in Iraq?  The people that died horrific deaths in Katrina?  Or don't they count?

I hope that if the new govt. refuses to hold Shrub accountable for his actions, that the World Court will.  They have the jurisdiction with the torture that Shrubbie thought was just a keen idea.

And for all of you who cannot see beyond the Republican brand on Bush's hind end I sign myself one more time...
You all are idiots.  Try to show the President some respect.  I think you fools are more interested in attacking him than being open minded to see what good he has done.
AMAZING! AS I SIT AND STRUGGLE WHAT BILLS TO PAY.I GET
AN E-MAIL TO CONTRIBUTE TO OBAMA'S INNAUGURATION.I READ WHERE LAURA BUSH SPENDS $400.000 FOR NEW CHINA IN THE WHITE HOUSE. WHEN WILL THIS SH-T END? STIMULUS
PACKAGE WHICH WILL BE AVAILABLE FOR BUSINESS AND I WILL GET $500 OH WAIT I WON'T GET THAT SINCE I AM STILL PAYING THE IRS FOR MONEY OWED. I REALLY THOUGHT THINGS WOULD CHANGE BUT I SEE JUST THE FACES ARE CHANGING THATS IT.
I saw the press conference. I finally felt I undertstood his motives. I thought he was very passionate about his country and did do what he thought was best with the knowledge he had and how effected he was by 9-11. The rest of us were impacted but have lost loved ones from needless violance, accidents, and lack of medical expertise or coverage.  Maybe we are fortunate there have been no new attacks and that is better than all the other changes we now live with everyday because of that over-riding goal. Americans die in all kinds of ways everyday, but it is with dignity when you die standing for something rather than live by perpertrating violance on others or just allowing substandard lives for others because so much is spent in defense of a way a life not shared by all Americans. I wish he could have talked with that compassion more often instead of what often sounded like arrogance and lack of concern for what others were experiencing from his decisions. Maybe he would have been even able to open his mind and heart to what Obama and many, many Americans are saying. What we all will die for is ideals, freedom and each other, not for money, oil and to spare some Americans while others die.
It's funny in an ironic sort of way. Folks I know in Southern Africa told me how much they loved Bush because he helped provide HIV drugs at low cost. I told them it was one of the few success stories that the Bushies could point to and most folks I knew could not stand him. They wondered whether he did it to win black votes or whether Laura told him it would be the right thing to do. Bet the pharmaceutical companies still made a bundle off the deal. Good riddance George. May some Texas brush slap you in the face when you least expect it.
"you can not ignore the fact that some of his policies and leadership decisions have kept our country safe since 9/11. "

Yup - just one disasterous attack on HIS watch and a totally screwed response to it. And did you forget a-n-t-h-r-a-x? That was after 9/11.

Everytime I can almost forgive and forget and let Bush go, the idiot gets on TV and tells me what a good president he's been (or Laura, or Chicken Dick).
if the SOB (son of a bush)wanted to spread democracy he could have tried any inner cities in the
US for his expierment,he invaded a country that had nothing to do with 9-11,had his deck of cards,a senile old fart rumsfield and cheney for advice.what a team he has destroyed this country.i look into his eyes and see a idiot.
To all of you illiterate I believe everything I read and see in a most slanted media (Keith Oberman, et al) you should just shut up, read a little more and be thankful that you still have your beer, you still have your cigarettes, your crack, your pot, etc, and no one has bombed you out of your home, your job, your wasted pathetic existance and you have and maintain your RIGHT to bitch.  George W. Bush didn't always get it right, but at least he didn't mealy mouth his way around it, he stuck to his viewpoint, had the mental fortitude to do what he thought was best and he HAS kept our homeland safe, not one single significant event transpired after 9/11, yet MANY attempts were thwarted because of the diligent efforts of so many.  Think about that then next time an unintelligent remark springs from your fingers.  I simply cannot believe there are that many dumbazz's living in this country.  You all should be ashamed.  What did Barack Obama ever do for anyone, other than himself? Riddle me that Batman.......

____________

The simple litmus test...is this country better off now than it was 8 years ago?  If you can look around at the economic issues, the major companies either going belly up or laying off tremendously, the forclosures, the bailouts, etc, and then look at all the CEO's taking their golden parachutes, all the sidestepping on the issues of torture, the shameless refusal to honor subpoenas to his staff...if you can look at all that and still defend the man, then maybe *you* should be the one happy to still have his crack.
Chuck - your name is Chuck - why didn't he call you by name when he called on you for your question - he addressed the first two by name and then didn't for you.  Do you perceive this as a slight?
To Marcus D., yeah, the Aids program has helped.  Still, meds but no (the cheapest and most obvious assistance) condoms.  Sorry.  "W" doesn't believe in that.  He has never learned that it is not "his" beliefs that he represents, it is the countries beliefs.  As for the rest, well, two stinking wars, the economy and markets in shambles, housing and autos in shambles, incredable debt by any standards, no respect internationally, and no jobs.. What a legacy! I'm grateful he only had 8 years.  Nothing more to trash, time to go.  "W" should go quail hunting with Mr. Chaney for "old time's sake".
Yo ... editor ...
Love the "All comments must be approved be fore appearing ..."
Yep, YOU people belive in the First Amendment, don't you!
"All this anti President Bush is crap.  Everything from soup to nuts on him.  Who are you going to blame now that he is gone? "

We could take a page out of the Hypocrite's Bible and blame Clinton? Like "we" did from 2000 to 2006 (when the Democratic Congress became the seat of blame).
If any one who lives in America and feels they can do a better job running for the office of President and putting up with the hounding of the liberal media press, then let them step up to the plate the next time we have a election for the office of the President.  Most of us would fail the first 24 hours in the job....
George W Bush,  went into Iraq when his own father told him not to get into that mess.
This poor schmo doesn't understand human nature.  Doesn't remember history.  Napolean got France into wars which bankrupted the economy of France and was exiled.  Many others have fallen down that well.  this poor schmo thinks that we can force democracy down the throat of any country.  Please,  If they aren't motivated from inside the country are they going to like the good old USA forcing it on them like nasty tasting medicine???  It's nice to know that the US had been the worlds only super power for a short while but forcing anyone to do anything just doesn't work well.  If he came on the TV and asked you if you would support sending trrops to Iraq at a cost of 15 Billion a month fo rthe next 10 to 15 years would you have said let's go for it???  would you have said we like spending our money on a bunch of people who hate us??  Did this solve teh proble in the middle east?? increase trus and understanding?  Are guns and the bombs the only answer?  If they are tehn why didn't we just use our nuclear power?  Nobody fears our nuclear power because we haven't used it in 63 years.  It is dead as a deturrent.    That is like threatening a child with spanking which you never give out.  Our threat now i we will dipose your government and muck about in your countryu for a few years and then leave with our tails between our legs.
how sis George W go into Iraq beat there million man army and then not get those million men jobs??  Didn't any one ask teh question as to what those million guys were going to do?? They are so f'ing narrow thinking that they never aske d that question.  What happens in a country when you put a huge part of it's work force with no job, no income, no prospect for a better life???  who do you thing our proud hard working armed forces have been fighting in Iraq all this time,  those same unemployed Iraqui boys with no jobs.  angry, bored, broke  out of work and nothing better to do then fighting to get the infidels out of thier homeland.

I'm sick of pathetic people in charge of our great country.  I want someone with a brain in there fighting for the great people of the USA.

We can no longer tolerate a president who fires experts for disagreeing with him.  A president who grew up so rich that he thinks he shouuld be able to spend 10 years pay of every man woman and child in the country since it is such a small amount to him.  The guy has no clue what is like to pay the rent or mortgage, have to shop for car insurance to save 50 bucks since he always had billions of dollars in the family stock portfolio and all of his billionaire friends never had to balance a check book or save for college tuition.

no more cluless rich guys who think they are entitled to the office of president.
katrina, the econony, 2 wars, wire tapping, ..what a joke!!  The funny thing is many of my friends are republicans and they too think Bush is a bonehead
There is no fool like a wilfully blind one who is filled with hate and an unAmerican plilosophy.  Conservatives have always protected the national welfare by their personal sacrifices, even their blood...President Bush will ultimately be vendicated by those who reach their conclusions through honest intelligent processes.  I personally thank him that we are safer because of his unswerving commitment to our country and opposition to terrorism worldwide.
I feel like I lost IQ points by reading some of these responses.  Like someone else pointed out, who are you going to blame when Bush is gone?  Too many people think that the President is the end all of all things that he can spend money raise taxes lower taxes etc.  Last time I checked the Constitution states that in simplisitc terms that the Excutive branch enforces the law, the Legislative branch makes the laws and the Judicial interprets the laws.  Has Bush made a few mistakes, yes but at the same time for all those stating that he got America into two wars, who gave him the unfettered power to do that?  Last time I checked Congress.  Democrats have controlled Congress for the past two years and they could stopped the war at anytime.  They did not.  Bank deregulation, Congress's doing not Bush's.  Housing crisis, large part of that the foundation was laid before he was elected the first time with Cogngress pushing to have everyone realize the "American Dream" of owning a home.
Yes, George is to blame for everything. The Democrats who've run Congress for the past two years had absolutely NO part in our faltering economy? Oh wait, it was Barney Frank who wrote the legislation in the late 1990s that exploded in the subprime mortgage loans, in fact requiring banks to make risky loans to people who can't afford them (Clinton signed it into law; look it up). But that's Bush's fault. Bush is arrogant and disrespectful? Have you been paying attention to how Hollywood and the media treat any Republican and how kids-gloved they are with Obama? Wow. That's right; Democrats are "inclusive" and Republicans not so. Sure, just don't disagree with the Democrats and you're included. Otherwise, you'll be villified with the gross amount of hatred you see here in the forums for Bush. Bush did a lot of things wrong, but so did Clinton. And so will our saviour Obama.
Why does everyone have to blame Bush for everything that goes wrong?? Were we suppose to turn our cheeks on 9/11? I don't think so. Who ever is president will be in a lose lose situation.Congress is what needs to change.  They think more about themselves and their pocket books than the american people.  Only GOD knows if Obama will be any better.  I do know this, that if he makes just one mistake, no one is going to let him forget it. Bush did the best he could.  Obama will probably atry to do his best, but it will NEVER make EVERYONE happy. If any of you think you can do the job better, you should have ran for president. All we can do is pray that GOD will help Obama make the right decisions for us. Name calling isn't going to help at all.
As a fellow Texan, I would like to give George W. the benefit of the doubt, but just cannot. He was advised a few years ago of the pending financial crises/disaster and as is his character, ignored them.
His stubborness and wrong beliefs just would not allow him to admit or correct mistakes. He surrounded himself with bad or incompetent characters (Cheney, Brown, etc) and his loyalty blinded good judgement. He can be likeable, but somehow just didn't get it.He was suited to be a Governor, but was in way over his head as President.
He took a budget surplus from Clinton and turned it into a massive deficit thru poor decisions and a questionable war. I suspect history will not be kind to him re his legacy. Probably in the bottom 10-20%.

Wow, I can't believe how hateful you Demacrats are.  I suppose it's in part from watching the main news networks who are sooo liberal that even if Bush did everything they wanted, they'd still find fault, simply because he's a republican.

I hope Obama does a good job in office, as compared to the last democrat in there, who did absolutly nothing but spread little globs of his DNA around the office and the clothes of young interns.

But that seems to be what rates as a good president to the demacrats. Who was it that harmed the image of America's morality?

Leave Bush alone already, He's gone in another week.  You should be more concerned about the mess the demacrats on the finance committee have got us into that Obama has to deal with.
Richard Bickford: Did Dubya keep us safe? 9/11 happened on his watch, not Clinton's. Maybe if Bush and his pals had read the intelligence reports, took notice of what they said, and did something about them, maybe the disaster that happened on 9/11 wouldn't have occurred. If you are praising Dubya for preventing any other attacks then you have to hold him responsible for the one that did happen. And if you think 3000 Americans killed on that day is horrific then so is 4000 American soldiers dying in Iraq. Those soldiers died because of a decision that Dubya made. And yes, I hold him responsible for their deaths. I find it amazing how you Bush lovers say that we are there because Saddam was killing his own people but you don't blink an eye when you hear that this war has caused the death of thousands upon thousands of Iraqi civilians.

You can say and think what you like but for most people in this country and the world, George W. Bush is the worst president EVER and we can't wait for him to get out of our lives.
Bush only cares about himself and the cronies that hang around him.
When we complain about outsourcing hr cries out protectionism.....he has been pitching protection for 88 long years after 9/11 (from al qaeda) conviently blaming Clinton for the attack on his watch.
I guess taking your job sending it to China or India where they can make everything for nothing bringing the goods back tarriff free and selling them to us while we are in the unemployment line.
Doesn't matter that these countries have slave labor and no pollution laws.
Not to mention the insourcing they've done by letting 10 million mexicans take our jobs with no border security.

Yeah history will remember GW.Bush the military deserter the war criminal the silver spoon fed fancy lad that lived on his fathers doorstep, and screwed the american people at every minute of his concious day.
good riddance
Someone said President-Elect Obama won by a mandate!!! Are they for real?
Remember that many (most) states have changed the way electoral ballots are cast - now, if someone wins a majority, however slight, they get the whole ball of wax.
Then-Senator Obama did not win by a mandate of the popular vote - and, if you look at a county-by-county vote in the 2008 presidential election, you would SWEAR that Senator McCain won the election.

That poster should look up "mandate", should do some research, and should see if he can find a doctor to do something about his cranial-rectal inversionitis.
I am deeply concerned about those who speak ill of our President. If we could turn back to the day our President was first elected in to office and change the outcome to that of Gore rather then Bush how do you think 911 would have been handled?  Our President has taken on more ridicule then any one person should be expected to receive given the circumstances that were thrown in his lap when he took office.  Who of you critics could have done any better?  I am a Republican however; I am also a supporter of our President regardless of what party he represents. I will support President-Elect Obama as I have President Bush, and I will thank God that he has allowed me to live in a country where I am not asked to support a Dictatorship form of Government.  Unless the critics are willing to take on the tremedous role and task of President of the greatest nation in the world I would suggest they support the person who is elected to this "Thankless" and highly critical position.
Bush's legacy is like the opposite of good wine: It gets nastier with time. In fact, it turns to vinegar. Just add water and you'll have the concoction that best describes the worst president ever's reputation around the world.
George W. pretty much sized things up with his comments regarding: "Mission Accomplished", his tough cowboy language, Abu Ghraib, WMD among his "mistakes".  If he can call these mistakes now then he certainly knows he has been wrong about many things.  He sounds like a bitter, resentful man.  He is right, we all need to wish President Obama the very best - he certainly has inherited a mess on all fronts.
Bush's legacy as our worst person ever was cemented the day he allowed the Geneva Convention to be ignored and gave Cheney the power to play God. It will take our soldiers decades to live down the fact that what we promote as "the greatest nation on earth" allowed sinful torture to be carried out for self-serving reasons. Shameful.
Born again liar or just too stupid to realize what is happening outside of his millionaire circle. Eight years ago I was saying to myself 'what is this guy gonna do to this country'. Today the people are saying 'look at what this guy has done to this country. Worst president ever!
The disrespect for our President is disgusting.  No matter what you may think, he kept our country safe and I thank President Bush for his service.

What???Where is America's respect? I hold that everyone should be charged with treason. What other civilized country would allow such sludge to their leader. So maybe he wasn't the best, but he did get elected for two terms. He must have shown some sence to be elected twice. I should think people would not want to broadcast all that hate to the whole world. Don't like him,it's your decision but please==show a little respect for our country and it's leaders.
Since when did not admitting mistakes, not listening to the critics, and believe you are the only person know the best is a good thing????????????

I just can't understand how these Bush - fan thinks, yes... a leader does let his action dictated by the opposition, but how would you feel if your boss never listens to your suggestions and only does what he thinks is right? (and run the company to the ground in the process)

and if anyone wants to credit Bush kept us safe for the last seven years. He/She MUST blame him for the failure of 9/11, for both happened in his watch. In case you bushies didn't know, WTC was bombed once before in 1993 (During the first Clinton Term. Let me heard the republicans know... "It's Clinton is fault). By the same logic of W. kept us safe for the last seven years, Clinton also kept us safe for seven some years and Bush let it happen again... I guess people who loves W. is like him after all, never admit mistakes, never listens to others, and always blame others for your own mistakes...

If it was so bad why did you all vote him back in? The most futile of people are usually the loudest as has been demonstrated on this blog.

May we all be saved from you liberals that will have us at the will of Chavez, then you can all sing the praise of your socialist delusion.

Wake up people. No that Obama has heard the real story (Terrorism), he will act more like Bush than you ever thought.
Easy everyone.  Your man won - let's see how he does.  Bush will not go down as the worst President.  That honor will go to Mr. Carter.  Lets see - 18 1/2 - 22 % mortgage rates, 17 1/2 % unemployment, hostages held for 400+ days and he stood by impotent.  A military second to everyones and was falling apart thanks to his misguidance.  All this at the time he left office.  Talk about good riddance.  Hmmmm...  Bush doesn't appear to have been THAT bad.  Thank God(you do remember him - don't you?) for Ronald Reagans' cleanup or we would have all be speaking Russian.  How soon we forget.
The country is safer....good job for 7.5 years but if I am not mistaken 911 happened on your watch.  VP Cheney thinks you inherited 911 so obviously you guys are in denial.  But really the worst attack on American soil happened during your Presidential term...sorry to break the news.  Good by sir and you wont' be missed!
I hope the American image can be polished up a bit in the world's eyes.  I've seen it everywhere I've gone, especially in the last three years, and it's heartbreaking.  I'm looking forward to the day when I can look stop apologizing to people that learn that I'm from America.  But I'll always smile when I recall this comment: "Your president and vice-president are so arrogant, you are not, surely you did not vote for him?"  (Right on!)
President Bush , you are a great man. you never stooped to the lowness of your detracters. It is easy to sit and criticize others but you just went on doing your very best for our nation. One can tell a good tree by its fruit, I think you have kept our nation safe. God bless you. I pray that President Obama will also choose the high road. In the end God will judge all of us. God bless the peacemakers.
"I hope the tone is different for [Obama] than it is for me,"...

it was different for you sir because (for one instance) you acused americans who did not support your war in iraq of "not supporting the troops".

when one acuses their fellow americans of (in effect)being traitors, when they are merely expressing their dissent with regards to your poilicies, one should not be suprised when a negative tone develops.

that you are suprised that a negative tone developed tends to reiniforce the feeling of detachment many americans have been picking up from their president for the last seven years.

we did not require any reiniforcement sir, you already managed to convince 80% of us.
Those of you jumping to criticize Bush.  Get off of your self righteous soap box, and think about how you felt on September 11th.  George Bush's reactions were appropriate, heroic, comforting, unprecidented, intelligent, and effective.  You may not know all you think you do.  Obama was sure spouting a number of things he was going to do differently until his private meeting with Bush, then his tune change.  I guess until you have the inside track, you may not know exactly what you are talking about.  I believe Bush is a good man who has made the best decisions he can with what he's been faced with.  Notice we have not had one single attack since 911 on our soil.  Sure, he has his downfalls, but he isnt the outright embarassment of a President that Bill Clinton was.  Do you know what one person has helped Africa more than anyone else in the world?  Nelson Mandella?  NO, GEORGE BUSH!  I believe he is a fine person and fine president.  Also, if you're dissatisfied with the person WE elect for president, you do have the option to move to another country who's leader is perfect.  I cannot believe the lack of eduction the posters show when criticizing Mr. Bush.
I hope that all of you Dems (I am so registered) will stay as active while Obama is in charge. I am a conservative, middle road Dem., and I worry that Obama's support is for a VERY liberal/socialist/communist agenda. I did not vote for him for this reason. I still believe that we can make better decisions & use of our own money than the govt. No Nanny-state for me. But I am willing to see what he does. If he governs close to center, fine. But I definitely do not trust the "coasters"; left coast or the eastern/elitist media, who seem to think they're
better at making decisions for us!
