From NBC's John Yang

Because of the gathering of top officials in one spot during the inaugural -- much like at the State of the Union -- there will be a designated successor tomorrow, a person in the line of succession who will not attend and will be in an undisclosed secure location.

The Bush administration and the incoming Obama team have agreed that the person will be Defense Secretary Robert Gates.

Hmmm! I just got a flashback from the last two inaugurations! Didn't GW place his hand on the same Bible as all other President elects? Seems to me like he lied those 2 days, didn't he? He lied to all of us. Don't let the door hit you on the a _ s on the way out Bush!  To Obama....I am behind you all the way!
Whoever wants Pelosi to be the designate is just beyond me.  How dumb and petty.  Let’s put someone there who has never really led anything anywhere.  In the past two years what has she really accomplished in the House? Allot of Talk - Hot Air? Would she be willing to wage war if it was nessisary?  I personally don't think so. Obama on the other hand, if something happened on the magnitude of 9-11 he wouldn't hesitate to wage war.  Although he is all prim and proper, he did work the Chicago landscape for quite a while, and I think it would bring out a fighting madman.  It's too funny how people are so quick to ridicule Bush for his tenure as or Commander in Chief.  Did he do everything right, heck no, but he did keep us from having another large scale attack on our soil.  He did cause that millions of people now have the right to vote for their governments.  We enjoyed that right this past November.  He also made it possible for millions of young ladies and women to have some life outside the rule of the Taliban.  Wow, I wish I can have that great of an impact on Humanity.  I Voted for Obama because I thought he had a greater oportunity to change some of the problems that have plagued our Nation and that he by his support will have the ability to accomplish more.  But if some terrorist wack-job were to take out the Capital, I would want someone like Gates on the side-line ready to pick up the pieces and take the war to the enemy.  I don't think that will happen because today our Nation is secure enough to have a transition of power without that threat.  It is safe enough because someone and their administration made it so, and although there are many other areas that did not meet the same success, this area did.  I believe keeping America safe is primary on the Presidents responsibilities, is it not?  How bout the other elements, can't the housing scandel be traced back to the House of Representitves and thier lack of oversight.  How bout the collapse of Walstreet?  Bernie Maddof?  What have they done of substance?   Some of the writers on here are so partisan and Bitter, but count your blessings that you are free to complain without the threat of death at your dissention or lifetime imprisonment.  Be thankful that we have a country were you can vote in a new Commander in Chief.  And be thankful that He has the common sense to put someone as his designate that has the capacity to react swiftly if the need arises.  Stop being bitter and be thankful.
We all need to pray for the new President and his top officials.  With God, color does not matter.  Obama is going to be our new President and we all need to be behind him.  I did not vote for him but he is our President and as a nation we need to be strong and support him.  It is our system and what makes us a great nation.  God bless America.

Hey Ladies and Gents,

Some of you make me sick with yourn dumb coments about
Hillary and Nancy.

The fact remains that we(The USofA)have both internal and external enemies that would love to disrupt a 250 year old trandition of a peaceful change of government.

The new President has a massive job ahead. This country was led by a bunch money hungary bums that allowed industries to run amok and screw the American people.

Our comeback will take time....it took Bush/Cheney eight years to ruin us.
To be in the line of succession, one must be appointed to the office and then confirmed by the senate prior to the death of the president.  To my knowledge, no one in Obama's cabinet has been confirmed yet except for Robert Gates (confirmed in the previous administration).
As for putting "the guy in charge of the military" instead of a "civilian" in charge ... Robert Gates IS the civilian in charge of the military.  The highest ranking military officer is the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
As long as the successor can continue this show of shows and make preparations for the daily TV show --- Obamanite Power Rangers. I can't wait for Obama to receive his Oscar and Emmy for the best perforance of the year. But why not Buffet? After all, what's good for Buffet is good for America.
Opinions do not make a good or bad president, neither
color, nor party affiliation do either.
Bias sometimes steer people in the wrong direction.
I am a registered Independent voter, and check out
the voting records of candidates on both parties. I
then vote for the person who votes for all of the
people, all of the time.
I don't vote for the big mouth, but the person who
works for the good of my Country first, and himself
last.
God Bless America, and guide our new
                 President Obama

Big government telling us what to do,how to feel, etc. Just wonderful. The mass victim society has reached its pinnacle. Why don't you bleating sheep stand on your own two feet for a change and quit being a drain on society. I hope B.O is what we need and I hope that I am voting for him the next election. However why don't you lefties GIVE IT A REST !!!!!! You got what you wanted now please SHUT UP and lets move forward.
Hopefully partisan politics will be still on this historic day. The rhetoric surronding the dissatisfaction of the past eight years has no place on in the conversation of the day. Today is a day for celebration and hope for our collective future as a united nation; whether republican or democrat, black or white.

In parting, I would like to thank Mr. Bush for keeping us safe. International terrorism of 9-11 defined his presidency, unrest in the Middle East compounded the trials and tribulations confronting him, a natual disater, Katrina, stretched the resources of our nation and a global economic collapse, long in the making through unscrupulous business practices since the 1980's, unjustifiably tarnished his efforts. None of these events were of his making by either act or ommision. Farewell Mr. President. May history look kinder on your efforts.
Robert Gates is the only person in the designated line of succession that will be in both cabinets.  The designated line of succession adheres to the constitution.  Only an ignorant person would even suggest that Gates might drop a drop on the event. Only the president has the codes that would allow for deploying nuclear weapons.  After the swearing in of the new president, Barrack Obama then controls the codes.

I didn't vote for Obama but now that he is elected, I pray for him & his family & wish him Godspeed.  It is time for the democrats to get over the hate of George Bush & the uninformed opinions they have based on media & not on facts.  If we speak against policy, that is not hate.  If we disagree with a preident's opinion we can do so without hate.  We are a government of laws not mob rule.
In response to some of the comments that have been made... racism has been kept alive by all nationalities. Do we have Caucasion colleges? NO. Do we have African American colleges? Yes. Do we have Indian reservations? Yes. Is there a reservation for Caucasions? There are more programs out there for any other nationality than there are for the caucasion male. Has my family been in need? Yes. But because I am a married caucasion woman there is nothing available to me and my family. Bill Cosby, Will Smith and Oprah Winfrey all have more money than I can ever dream of having... I say we all make of it what it is. There are choices and sometimes you make the wrong one, but you pick yourself up, dust yourself off and keep moving. I am tired of hearing about racism. If you want it to go away then you have to let it go. Maybe get some councelling. We could have had an African American president a decade ago but the choices weren't very good ones. I seriously would have voted for Bill Cosby a decade ago. One smart man! I also would have voted for Arnold Schwarzenegger, another smart man. To be honest I would have voted for either one of them before any of our candidates in this election. More life experience... and both have a bigger clue about the "mess" we have ourselves in right now. I truly do believe that this election was based on race and if Obama was not African American he would not have won. By doing this we have now kept racism alive. Nice job... And regarding this article in this day and age and how bad things are it probably wasn't a bad idea to pick the secretary of defense...
I was born in the 60's, I served the USAF in the 80's, My ancestors from 1600's, served in the Revoultionary war so all Americans could be free to choose.  I am so glad to see Obama in the White House, and estatic Bush is out! I never liked the weasel. I pray "We shall overcome" the crap Bush left and move forward together.. United! as in
..."GOD BLESS THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA"
IN CASE SOMETHING CATASTROPHIC WERE TO HAPPEN, GATES IS THE RIGHT PERSON, I BELIEVE. I AM EXCITED AND ENTHUSIASTIC AT THE FACT THAT OUR NEW PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA IS IN, LET'S HELP OUR NEW LEADER GET THIS COUNTRY BACK ON TOP.
Considering this is the most expensive inauguration in history - by 4 TIMES the previous most expensive - I don't see how anyone can call this "hope" or "change".  Maybe change for the worse.  Well at least you all can see that he's already backing down on some of his campaign promises!!!!!  Just a matter of finally getting more information so he can't do everything he promised!
