First thoughts: The big, fat O

*** The big, fat O: Despite Obama traveling to Capitol Hill to meet with them in private, despite including one of their former members (Ray LaHood) in his cabinet, and despite inviting their leaders over for cocktails last night at the White House, not a single House Republican voted for the stimulus package, which cleared the House yesterday by a 244-188 vote. Predicting that GOP outcome before the vote, the Washington Post notes, House Republican Leader John Boehner put his finger and thumb together to signal the big, fat "O" -- zero. House GOP leaders seemed to go out of their way to make sure reporters knew the message they were sending was directed at Speaker Pelosi, not the president. (As one snarkily noted to First Read, the president met with House Republicans on the stimulus bill more times than Pelosi did.) But how closely does the American public follow congressional politics? Won't this look like they are snubbing a president who just days ago reached out to them? Republicans are taking a risk by looking so defiant, especially if this package ends up working. The last thing Republicans need is another "O" -- obstructionist” -- being tagged to them.

*** Another Obama olive branch: That said, in his statement last night, Obama said that he wants “to strengthen” the stimulus plan before it gets to his desk. It was an interesting word choice and yet another olive branch to House Republicans. (And get this -- Obama didn’t include the words “Democrat” or “Democratic” in his statement.) There are a number of Democrats scratching their heads at the House GOP goose egg; we even learned that LaHood was calling his fellow House Republicans asking for them to support the legislation. After all, the president has a 70% job approval rating and the package itself has the support of a majority of Americans, who in general appear to believe they want government to do something -- rather than nothing -- when it comes to the economy. Interestingly, the president may have his own issues to deal with in his own party. The more defiant Democrats are thinking, "I told you so," when it comes his GOP outreach efforts. In addition, we've been hearing chatter from congressional Democrats that they'd like the president to act as concerned about winning their support as he acts when it comes to the Republicans. Meanwhile, a coalition of liberal groups is launching a new ad campaign that urges moderate Republican senators to support the economic stimulus.

*** The state of the GOP: Given last night's House Republican vote, as well as tomorrow's RNC chair contest and even the recent GOP fealty to Rush Limbaugh, it's worth pointing out that the Republican Party is about as unpopular now as the president who just left office. In addition to December's NBC/WSJ poll, which showed that only 27% of the country viewed the GOP favorably (versus 49% who said that about the Dem Party), a new Gallup analysis of the 350,000 interviews it conducted in 2008 finds the Democratic Party leading in every state in the nation except in Alabama, Kansas, Nebraska, Alaska, Idaho, Wyoming, and Utah. (That’s right, even in some states McCain carried like Texas and Georgia, voters identify more with the Dem Party than the GOP.) Gallup summed up it up this way: “The political landscape of the United States has clearly shifted in the Democratic direction… As recently as 2002, a majority of states were Republican in orientation. By 2005, movement in the Democratic direction was becoming apparent, and this continued in 2006. That dramatic turnaround is clearly an outgrowth of Americans' dissatisfaction with the way the Republicans (in particular, President George W. Bush) governed the country.”

*** (Don’t) run away, run away from the pain: Minority Leader Mitch McConnell will talk about this very topic -- the Republican Party’s political standing -- when he gives the keynote address at 2:30 pm ET today at the RNC winter meeting. "The first task, in my view, is to find the voters who’ve left the party,” McConnell is expected to say, according to excerpts his office emailed First Read. “As we do this, the temptation for some will be to run from our principles or to dilute our message. I think that’s a temptation we need to resist. These people were Republican for a reason. You don’t get them back by pretending to be something else. And you certainly don’t gain voters by running away from the ones that are most loyal."

*** RNC chair count: Our latest numbers on the RNC chair race that takes place tomorrow: Duncan 44, Steele 30, Dawson 18, Blackwell and Anuzis 16 each, Saltsman 1, Undecided/Not Reached 43. The Web site, YourRNC.com, which also has been tracking this race, updated its numbers as well: Duncan 36, Dawson 20, Steele 18, Anuzis 17, Blackwell 13, Saltsman 0. (Per a list provided by the Steele campaign, it claims 18 publicly pledged, but 12 others private for our total of 30.) In a conference call yesterday, the Duncan team boldly proclaimed, per NBC's Claire Luke, “We expect it to be a very interesting day on Friday, but no matter how many ballots it goes to, we expect Duncan to be the winner." Interestingly, the debate over the president's stimulus package is coming in the same week as the party’s chairman race. And the GOP has been going through an identity crisis of sorts. Is it a low-tax, low-spending, less-government, personal responsibility party? Well, it's what many in the House GOP caucus want to be but that isn't what the party has been these last six years and while the base of the GOP may be responding to this new redefining of what the party wants to be, is it believable to the vast middle of the electorate who shifted toward the Democrats in droves over the last two years and

*** Blago’s last day as governor? After saying that he wouldn’t testify at his impeachment trial, Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich (D) will now make an appearance after all, when he delivers a closing argument of sorts at the trial at noon ET. And those could very well be his final words as governor. After his remarks, the state Senate will vote to remove him from office. To do that will require a vote from 41 out of the state’s 59 senators, and it if happens Lt. Gov. Pat Quinn (D) will become the state’s 41st governor.

*** Obama’s day: Obama today will sign his first bill into law -- the Lilly Ledbetter bill, which eliminates the statute of limitations when women and others can sue for workplace discrimination. After that, Obama will stop by a reception (which is closed to the press) where Ledbetter and Michelle Obama will speak. Later today, Obama and Biden will meet in the Oval Office with Treasury Secretary Geithner, and then Obama will hold another Oval Office meeting with Secretary of State Clinton. Also today, the House GOP caucus begins its annual retreat in Hot Springs, VA.

The stimulus is less of a battle between Republicans and Democrats then it is an internal struggle with the GOP. They need to decide whether they'll be the obstructionist party of "no" that they slammed the Dems for back in the Delay era, or or if they're willing to compromise on things other than a strict conservative agenda.

Unfortunately for Obama, no amount of cocktail parties will get him more GOP votes.

http://www.political-buzz.com/
Mr. Obama, when you try to reach across the aisle for votes, you need to bring a little more then your smile and sparkling personality.
This is George Bush's fault.
The political landscape of the United States has clearly shifted in the Democratic direction...
****************************************************

I've been saying it for some time now... the GOP needs to get new leadership with fresh ideas.  Back away from the divisive 'culture war' mentality and become a party of inclusion.  A grassroots movement in true conservatism is the only way that the Republican party can make a comeback.

http://thepajamapundit.com/
The republicans in the House clearly knew what they were doing, because they know that the version of the Bill that passed the House last night, will not become law, as the Senate version will clearly be more to their liking as the 60 vote rule will require more components favorable to republicans in order to get something passed there.  The version that will eventually be worked out between the House and Senate will most likely garner more republican support.
So, because Obama hosted them for cocktail parties and luncheons, the GOP was supposed to capitulate to him?  And as far as the Dems who voted against this bill, will the liberals on here be excoriating them too, or is their contempt reserved only for Republicans?
It's amusing to watch Obma's first week in office. First he appeases terrorists by closing Gitmo (in a year, or so, maybe, he'll at least try), then he goes on Arab TV to appease all Arabs. There was more Arab butt kissing in a week by Obama then since Jimmy Carter was around.

But who does Obama pick his first fight with? Who does he point out that is a threat to America? Who does he say in being un-American and should mind his business? Rush Limbaugh.

Unbelieveable!
[Obama said that he wants “to strengthen” the stimulus plan before it gets to his desk]

Not enough pork in bill Barack?
It is possible that the Repukes are just plain mad that we the people voted for someone who is willing to try to work across the isle.  The serious problem with these people is that they never once balked while at the helm of driving this country into the ditch and now they want to be fiscally responsible?  Come on lets get real here, people are losing their jobs every damn day and all these idiots can do is be spoiled damn brats and be the problem not the solution this country needs.  I don't like the situation we are in but damn it these idiots need to be fired because they still represent the problem with this country, they don't want to work with the other party.  If the two party system is to work they have to be willing to work with each other, and as we have seen, at least President Obama is seeking their advise and ideas but what do they do in return, be the party of blocking solutions.
First Read: Obama: to strengthen the stimulus plan before it gets to his desk. It was an interesting word choice and yet another olive branch to House Republicans.

So, what's the olive branch? This is just meaningless rhetoric, a real core value of Obama's way of doing business.
Republicans are not needed to pass anything Obama wants to at this point. They have the right to vote against, keep their position of non-support in place so that they can not be tied or linked to the results of this Porkulus Bill many tax payers are against.

The real question on this should be Why there were Dems who voted against it? How can that be explained?
What were they concerned about? Don't focus on the party who in unity voted against it.
The big fat 0 (Zero) says a lot.  It will hurt those republicans in Ohio, Indiana, Michigan who voted no...unless they change their mind when they get a second change to vote on the final version. The GOP is a party of No (ideas).  It is into obstructionism.  And their new leader, whoever it is, is clueless also.

What is worthy of comment is Dick Armey's comments to Joan Walsh on Hardball.  I wonder why the producer did not scream in Chris's ear, "Intervene, Stop this!" I could tell on Chris's face he wasn't too happy, but did not immediately say anything. Kukdos to the fellow who did say that Armey did owe Joan an apology, Hardball an apology, and the viewers an apology.  I would hope that viewers would send Armey a bunch of emails saying how outrageous he was.  This may be a statement of how confused the GOP is. They are stuck to their ideology, will not compromise, will not say I'm sorry.  Old Chinese Proverb:  When you resort to emotional attack, you have abandon wisdom and logic.
'...hey were sending was directed at Speaker Pelosi, not the president. (As one snarkily noted to First Read, the president met with House Republicans on the stimulus bill more times than Pelosi did)...'

Whne the Boner was in charge, how many times did he met with Democrats to craft legislation ?
A big fat ZERO

The tables have turned, to quote Pres. Bush:
'Electins have consequences'

It IS a Democratic package
Make it a Democratic package
Remove some of those tax cuts and apply the money to Mass Transit
Remove some of those tax cuts and apply the money to infrastructure
Remove some of those tax cuts and apply the money to Education

THAT'S CHANGE I CAN BELIEVE IN !!
STMULUS BILL PROPOSED BY OBAMA WHITE HOUSE IS JUST A LEFTWING CARE PACKAGE --- THAT WILL DO VERY LITTLE TO STIMULATE OUR ECONOMY ===

WE NEED A STIMULUS BUT NOT A BILL THAT PROVIDES MILLIONS OF DOLLARS TO THE INFAMOUS "ACORN" ORGANIZATION ===

REPUBLICANS MUST FIGHT THIS OBAMA SHAM.
It pisses me off to watch Repugs complain about this package.  Watched Barney Frank take on Senator Blackburn last night.  Enjoyed that one on CNN.  She was another word changer republican.  That seems to be their IM.  I'm hoping they will pay attention to McConnell.
Even if this stimulus package does not end up working, the Republicans will still look like nothing more than partisan hacks who had only their party's interest, and not the interest of the American people (their bosses), in mind when they voted.  Furthermore, if the stimulus fails, I for one will not be blaming President Obama or those who voted for it - they at least tried - but the Bush administration and the last eight years of leadership malpractice (i.e., the Republicans), for ushering in this horrible, horrible economic era.

Modern-day Republicans don't "get it," and their behavior on this bill is stunning proof.  They deserve to fall into history's dustbin.  John Boehner, your little hand signal was a perfect self-description.
Well, Boner, a big fat zero will be the votes you get in the next election!  hahahahahah!  Funny, isn't it?
The Tory Traitor repugnant ones are doing everything they can to sabotage Obama for their own political gain.  They have been lying about how tax cuts spur the economy, even citing CBO numbers that don't exist.  As always it's their Idiot Ideology first and the country last.  They want tax cuts because they want to bribe the voters into voting for them instead of looking at what our economy really needs for recovery.  Their tax cuts for the rich and greedy have bankrupted our country and wrecked our economy and now they want more.

I hope that the repugnant ones allow Lush Limburger take over their losing party.  The Obese Obtuse One is the biggest idiot of all time and anyone who believes his pack of lies is braindead and hates our secular democracy.

In Lush We Bust!
Blame George: '... This is George Bush's fault...'

Wasn't Bush in charge for 8 years ?
Wasn't he in control of the economy ?
Didn't he squander money on tax cuts for the rich ?
Didn't Bush squander our money on the Iraq War ?
Didn't Bush spit on working people ?

Wasn't America's defense HIS RESPONSIBILITY when 9/11 happened ?
I am very pleased with the republican party for voting against this "pork"package. It is against all conservative principle and although they may not be able to stop these liberal crooks at least the republican party can let them fail on there own. This whole idea of shaming the republican party for not getting the "unity" memo is ridiculous, were was this great rally for unity for Bush? Oh its just when it's "there guy" should the world lie down, other wise they act like bitter loser, lieing and discrediting our president, gotcha. What is truly amazing is that people actually buy into this garbage! Where have you ever in your life thought "I am broke, lets spend a lot of money on meaningless things, maybe will get back in the green" bunch of cronies you all are!!!!
Rachel Maddow did a great piece last night exposing the lie of tax cuts spurring the economy better than spending.  The fact is that when we shop it's the Chinese who get the new jobs.  Government spending is what we need now to spur the private sector back into hiring new workers.  We saw proof positive that the tax rebate of last year was nothing but a political bribe to vote for the repugnant ones, it did nothing to spur the economy or create new jobs here.

I see that "Blamey Whinehouse" Palin is setting up a PAC.  She's setting up "ScumPAC" to fleece her clueless faithful into sending her money to waste on expensive designer clothes and grossly overpaid makeup artists and hair stylists.  I hope the voters of Alaska send her packing as they need to realize she is not doing her job that they're paying her for.

Impeach Palin!
I am so proud of the House Republicans to stand up for what they believe.  They did not "snub" anyone.  They know the Pork Package is a sham and are trying to do the best for america.  I'm glad they did not just roll over and do what Obama says.
Molly Anna ~

Mocking me is one thing.  Mocking me to mock C A is another thing altogether.  But exploiting the Beatles to mock us both? ... priceless.

In fact, I do believe that's a page right out of the Advanced Liberal Manual.

Go to the head of the class.
President Obama is just being nice to those Pathetic Greedy Repubs because he does't want to lower himself to their level..
Oops!  I meant MO!  I too hope Rush or Silly Sarah takes over their party.  That would be to funny and also a guaranteed win for Democrats.
Why do the Democrats even care if the Republicans vote for this pig or not? The only reason the Democrats could possibly want Republicans votes is so they (the Democrats) can be critical of the Republicans when this piece of cr*p bill goes up in a ball of flames.
I so enjoy seeing MSNBC become more popular over the years.  They do a much better job of telling the truth compared to the liars of Fox like Billo the Clown and Sean Insanity.  I am so laughing that the repugnant ones are allowing the Obese Obtuse One, Lush Limburger, to run their party into the sewer.  They are so stupid that they don't see how these propaganda liars are destroying their party, but that's a good thing as soon there will be no party of repugnant ones.

Thanks so much First Read for being the best place on the Web to come to read politics and make comments on the stories.  You people are the BEST!  Kudos to all the Obama supporters here for supporting our hero against the party of Nero Zeroes!

Support MSNBC and First Read!
President Obama is just being nice to those Pathetic Greedy Repubs because he does't want to lower himself to their level..
The stimulas, funding for overseas abortions and Obama's stupid remarks about the Washington Public School System are just a few of the reasons Obama will lose strength in the upcoming months.

More and more people are finding his charismatic personality is flawed. His personal agenda comes first and is not in the best interest of America, morally or financially.

The score: Obama 1 - America 0
The GOP will never learn.  These people are not working for U.S.  They have their own self interest at hand and that is to save the Republican Party, not do the people's work.

These politicians’ forget that they are servants - not members of a club and that's exactly the way in which they are acting.

If they think they can continue to try and not support President Obama without repercussions, they are sadly mistaken.

We the people will not allow this too continue and if they do anything that does not allow this country to move forward

We will know and the politicians will lose their jobs, just like the hundred of thousands of Americans that are currently losing jobs on a daily basis - come 2010.

Thank you and GOD BLESS AMERICA
GOOD NEWS !!!!  GEORGE "WORTHLESS" BUSH IS UN- EMPLOYED.
The republicans clearly stated that they could not pass this bill as it stood. They made it clear to Obama that they were completly shut out of the process, thanks to Pelosi. She even lied to some Republicans and said that 6 of their amendments would be in the final draft and behind their backs it was taken out after 12 hours of work.  You only see one side. If you got rid of Pelosi and Reid I would guarantee there would be harmony on the hill.
You Democrats/Liberals are really obsessed with the Republicans aren't you? You talk more about the Republicans then you do about the contents of the so called stimulus bill that is crawling it's way through Congress. I guess it's easier to be critical of the other party rather then have to confront all of your own faults.
Thank you Nancy Pelosi
Keep up the good work !!

Republicans WON'T cooperate, so cut them out of deliberations

Let's make it a package we can believe in
Make it a Democratic recovery program

More funding for infrastructure, Education and Mass Transit
I like how the pork gets added to this Stimulus bill as it makes its way to Obama's desk. It's like watching someone decorate a Christmas tree.
I guess the Republicans just don't want to vote for all the pork for ACORN.
according to moody's, "Based on Zandi's study, some of the most efficient ways to spend government money are temporarily increasing food stamps (a $1.73 GDP increase per dollar), extending unemployment benefits ($1.63), increasing infrastructure spending ($1.59) and upping direct aid to financially strapped states ($1.38)."

president obama went out of his way to follow through on his campaign promise to "reach across the aisle," to consult and listen to the opposition, to be the president for all americans not just those who voted for him; and for this he got "zero," "zip" "nada." as the republicans have now shown, they are not part of the solution (unless of course like they have become wont to do under gwb's, "my way or the highway", they are the problem! let's hope the senate, rewrites and strengthens (where president obama watered down to appease the non-cooperating republicans) the stimulus bill including less tax cuts and more infrastructure spending!
How low and despicable can the GOP get. What part of the recent CHANGE election did they not get. We the people want both political parties to work together to clean up the exorbitent mess that the GOP allowed/encouraged  by rubberstamping everything the shrub did. Tax cut to the wlthiest 2% and corporations has bankrupted us. It's so pathetic that the GOP CARES ONLY ABOUT PARTISAN POLITICS and being too inflexible. A large majority of American want the stimulus package passed;however; their too busy fawning over the big fat druggy Limbaugh that has become their mouthpiece. Come 2010 their just have to lose more seats. Maybe then their selfish ways and ideology can be buried.
Well, Boner, a big fat zero will be the votes you get in the next election!  hahahahahah!

JoAnn, Moundsville, Wv

Probably the majority.

[[Funny, isn't it?]]

Very much. It will be a riot.
So from some of the comments on here, many of you are more than happy to flush your tax dollars down the drain to support a number of ridiculous, irresponsible projects, but you're pissed off at a bunch of Republicans who are trying to prevent the waste of YOUR money.  Makes perfect sense to me.
    * * * SORE LOSER SYNDROME * * *

The Republicans recent conduct reminds me of the 'sore loser' antics I experienced in grade school.  When another team won, the losers would dog out the winners, seemingly, endlessly.

The losers of one event failed to realize that they had other opportunities to get back in the game and demonstrate what they can do.

Is this all Republicans can do -- be contrary?  What is their game plan for success?  I guess all we can expect from them now is what we see.  What you see is what you get.
GOOD NEWS !!!!  GEORGE "WORTHLESS" BUSH IS UN- EMPLOYED.

==================

With Stimulus package just passed, I hear GWB is getting a million dollar tax credit. Good for him.
President Obama's governing philosopy has always been "disagree without being disagreeable".

The change he is seeking is in the TONE of the debate, not necessarily the outcome.

When we reflect back a few short months ago to all the sad displays put on by the Republican Party ("pallin' around with terrorists", "unpatriotic", "flag pin flap", etc.), we can already see an improved TONE in Washington.

At the very least, let the disagreements be civil, take the votes, and move on without all the inflammatory and unnecessary rhetoric that has become a hallmark of Washington D.C.

And to all the Deomocratic members of Congress bellyaching about the President reaching out to the other side, please keep your eyes on the big picture and not on your own personal feelings. The President's term is FOUR YEARS, there will be plenty of time to make each and every member of Congress feel "special". Geez.

P.S. Because the media always needs a bad guy (or gal), the "demonize Nancy Pelosi" meme is now a favorite of the GOP and the media. Stop it. Speaker Pelosi is not perfect, but she is not the problem. Disingenuous Republicans looking out for their own job security instead of the nation's best interest is the problem. (Would any of you by a used car from Boehner? That guy just creeps me out.)
Can you Dems really be that scared of Rush when you control both the House and the Senate?

Why is Rush your main objective when you have the failing economy to think about? Yeah, right.

Maybe because deep down you all know Rush is right .... and heard on over 600 radio stations.

Enter Hannity, who also keeps the politically insane in their proper place.

Hey libs, who you gonna call ... Ghostbusters?

I say let them continue to worship Lord Limbaugh.  Maybe Obama can grant them a piece of land in the south (or Alaska) they can use to establish their own little fifedom where they can govern how they please.  I can see it now.  President Rush Limbaugh and VP Sarah Palin of the United State of Asinine.  Liberals, cocktail conservatives, foreigners, and those with an education above 10th grade need not enter.

Shame on you Chris Mathews for not jumping in to reprimand Dick Armey for his comments to Joan Walsh.  You didn't say anything about his personal attack on Joan until "after" commercial break.  Armey reminded me of a Plantation Owner just giggling when Joan spoak and then attacking her personally.  So typical of the Republicans.  When they have nothing of value to say they just giggle as if they are too good to be listening to the other person talk.  I give Joan credit for not attacking him back.  But shame on you Chris for having to be told - probably by your producer - after your next guest said that Armey owed Joan an appology.  Yeah - now I believe you voted for Bush twice.  You fit in with them.  The only good thing you did was bring us David Schuster.  He is a breath of fresh air and is not afraid to put it to these idiots.  David wouldn't have let Armey get away with what he did. Shame on you Chris!

Oh, be nice now. Just cause you like it being done to you doesn't mean everyone else does. Might want to talk to someone about the anger problem of yours too.
This house vote was basically a free vote for republican's, the Senate and Obama himself said that this is a process and changes will be made on the Senate side.  So, I don't have a problem with republican's voting no on the house bill and let's face it, there was some pork in there.

However, this bill needs to pass and get signed as soon as possible.
