From NBC's Domenico Montanaro
Michael Steele became the first African American to lead the Republican Party, two months after Barack Obama was elected the first black president of the United States.

Video: Michael Steele makes his acceptance speech as the newly elected RNC Chairman.

It took six rounds, but, in the end, Steele pulled it off, staving off South Carolina Party chair Katon Dawson, by a 91-77 vote. (This means, of the Anuzis votes, Steele picked up 12, Dawson got eight.)

"As a little boy growing up in this town, this is awesome," Steele said. "It is with a great deal of humility and sense of service that I thank all of you ... to serve as the next chairman of our proud ... strong ... and very, very hardworking Republican National Committee. ...

"It's time for something completely different, and we're going to bring it to them. We are going to bring this party to every corner, board room, community....

"For those who want to obstruct," he warned, "get ready to be knocked over."

He vowed to expand the party like never before seen and that he will take the fight to all parts of the country.

"To my friends in the Northeast," he said, "get ready baby, it's time to turn it on. We're going to win in the Northeast, continue to win in the South, win with a new storm in the midwest, and when we get to the west, we're going to win there."

He called this "a new opportunity. I cannot do this by myself."

He vowed to empower the national committeemen and make sure the "values" and "principles  that made us the party of Lincoln" are brought to the forefront.

Palomino (Sent Friday, January 30, 2009 4:50 PM)

Palomino:

Do you truly believe that the good ole white southern leadership boys of this party are going to let Steele have any say as to the direction this party? I think not. Like someone stated above, this is all window dessing. The only thing that Steele will be allowed to knock over is the chair they give him to go in that office far off in the corner down there where no one goes or pays attention.
Sounds like we have a bunch of jealous democrats that cannot grow up.  We have a country to embrace and fix, all of us.  You just make the divide wider by your negative remarks and (mis-spelled) jokes.  Go back to school and learn how to behave.  Give the guy a chance.
"Those about to obstruct, we salute you."

Was that AC/DC or Julius Caesar?
lol!!!!!!!!!!!.....are you kidding me this is pure comedy...get ready for the end of the world...the RNC has a black man in charge....what will you guys come up with next....i guess that 90% black vote got thier attention huh....If you think we're going to fall for this you got another thing coming.....LOL oh stop i cant breathe...LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!
As an ex-(long term)registered Republican I would love to see the Republican Party get their act together and once again offer viable representation for the average American instead of just trying to manipulate public opinion based on their ability to exploit emotions for individual issues that they aren't even sincere about. To accomplish that turn around the best start would be to admit their serious failure to represent the middle-class over the last eight years, not needing to dwell long on the apology but definitely needing to acknowledge the fault, and to then declare a strong and real commitment to change their focus. Moderate conservatism is great but continuing the arrogant and irresponsible total focus on the wealthy, Special Interests and a select few while giving only apathy, the costs and an abundance of subterfuge to the majority is totally obnoxious. They have created a considerable hurdle for themselves to overcome with their persistent strong and stubborn support of the arrogant and irresponsible (likely even criminal) Bush-Cheney administration. To now seriously and foolishly neglect reaching out to the middle-class and honestly addressing the substantial and real problems facing them would be just asking for the wrath of the middle-class to fall upon them. If they adhere to their current belief that all value is found in the satisfaction of the few and continue to depend on trying to deceive the many, then they really deserve to be relegated to lastingly be the minority party or worse. Touting puppet people like Sarah Palin and focusing on politics as usual instead of honestly and responsibly approaching bipartisanship is a sure sign that they just don't get the seriousness of the problems and can't divorce themselves from their self-focus. Appointing an African-American RNC chairperson is commendable but lacks the real substance needed. Let's hope they can get the message.
You can have the Chair, we'll take the HOUSE.
Ask Michael Steele if has he passed the MD bar yet because he failed it so many times. I think that says something about his intelligence.  Steele is a total opportunist. I live in DC and was so happy that he lost the senate race in MD.  He tried to garner AA votes by putting down on the GOP, but they saw through him.  How can he help with minority outreach for others when he could not even do it for himself? Putting a black face on it will not help.  I wish him luck, LOL. And don't call me racist because I am AA female and have been since I was in the womb.
Have the dumbassocrats ever had a Black lead their party in a similar role?  No.  There has never been a Black DNC chairman.  So the title should reflect either he is the first for both parties or not even mention his race.
Congrats, Mr. Steele........I was pulling for you all day long as Fox News reports came in with every ballot.  I've always been interested to hear your thoughts on Fox and I'm convinced you'll help this Party RE-GROUP!
It is shame that so many demoncrat are looking his skin color and envying him because he is chosen for the Chairman of The Republican Party.
Mr. Steele is an American. The thousand of others and I will support Mr. Steele.
Mr. Steele is an honorable man and is fully qualified to be a Chairman of The Republican Party.
Stop that racism! We have only two groups in the USA…a legal and illegal. The demoncrats were not able to have an honorable person for their party…Mr. Obama wouldn’t be a president if he did not buy that position with $668M…now he wants to pay off ACORN with 5.2B for helping him get to that position…frankly, majority of the demoncrats have mental deficiency in recognizing anything without hate and envy or in any decision making.
BTW...demoncrats want to blaim President Bush for their request of $819B...now that is real sick!
The RNC is grasping at straws. This is an obvious attempt to change the negative perception of the Republican party. Inclusion means more than electing an african-american to head the RNC. Try again.
The Republicans are a strong party. Just look at who has dominated the spotlight this week. REPUBLICANS! The Democrats are showing their true colors. Obama was never a true Democrat and neither was Bill Clinton. Why do you think the DNC is so poorly managed? Obama won because he was Obama, not a Democrat. Nancy Pelosi is the person who is going to destroy her own party. I think this week just is shaping up how inclusive our party really is between Sarah Palin, Ron   Paul and now Michael Steele all in the news this week. Olympia Snowe was even on MSNBC this week which is rare. And if Chris Mathews likes Mike Steele, Democrats should start being concerned. Ed Gillespie will help bring our Party back.
The racial divide on here sucks!  I hate it.  I thought it would be over when we elected Obama.  It's sad to read these postings. I voted for Obama not because of the color of his skin, because I felt he was the right person for the job.  I am happy for Steele.  Give the man a chance.  Like I wish people would give Obama a chance.  So far so good.  What I believe in my heart is we are all children of God, and we each have a right to be here.  Times have changed since I was a teen in the 60's living in Los Angeles.  Thank God for that!  Everyone including Palomino! is entitled to their opinion.  I don't have to like it, just except the fact not everyone is going to agree with mine!  Enough!

Go Steelers!!!!!!!!!!!
It is amazing how President Obama has shaken up the GOP.  First, they pick a clueless woman to run with John McCain, now they appoint Mr. Steele as chairman of the GOP.  I am happy for Mr. Steele but he was choosen only due to his skin color, not for his abilities.  Would Sarah Palin or Mr. Steele have been considered by the GOP if it wasn't for Barack Obama?  I think not!
A black man in a party of White supremacists. Well, good luck brother. You ain't going anywhere.
nICE TO SEE ALL THESE HISTORICAL AFRICANS HELPING WHITE PEOPLE IN THE USA RUN THINGS, BUT I WONDER WHEN WE WILL SEE AN HISTORICAL WHITE FIGURE RUNNING AFRICAN OR ASIAN OR JAPANESE NATIONS. OOPS THIS ALREADY TOOK PLACE EVEN IN A SMALL NATION OF ALL AFRICAN WHITES COULD NOT REMAIN RULING AND NOW THEY'RE BEING KILLED OFF. I WONDER WHY IT IS EVERY RACE CAN BE RACIAL TRIBAL BUT WHITES?

WHO IS IT IN THIS NATION THAT IS RIGGING OUR ELECTIONS AND USING OUR OWN FEDERAL GOVERNMENT AS AN ANTI-WHITE ANTI-CHRIST MECCA TO DESTROY THIS ONCE GREAT WHITE CHRISTIAN CULTURED CONSTITUIONAL MAJORITY RULE NATION?

WHO IS IT THAT HATES WHITES AND CHRISTIANITY SO MUCH THEY WOULD IGNORE THE FACT THAT ILLEGAL FREE TRADE AND CIVIL RIGHTS FOR ALL BUT WHITES, IS THE PROBLEM AND THE CURE IS TO REVERSE THEM.
Cograulation Mr. Steele, you just won the Darwin award for an uncle tom and ignorance.
Any minority, any poor person, any working class person, any female that supports the republican party has a real problem thinking.

The republicans are against any thing that might help minorityies, union workers, increasing of minimum wage, poor people and females, for twelve years the republicans refused to raise the minium wage, but raised their salaries nine times, congraulation mr Sreele you just became a member of the klux klan of politics. You must be one of the rich boys,I cant wait to see what kind of a super negro Rush calls you.
Can someone PLEASE explain to me how the Republicans are to blame for Hurricane Katrina?????? Does anyone want to blame the inept and corrupt politicians who were "trying" to run the city of New Orleans. They are to blame 100%!!! My goodness......look at the disasters in Iowa with the massive flooding,  and in Texas with Hurricane Ike. The leaders in these communities actually knew what they were doing and worked toward keeping the citizens safe.People who fall into both "R" and "D" affiliations worked hand in hand doing their job. Imagine that!!!!!!
And while those of you who say you would never be associated with a party that is filled with "racist/ hateful" people I ask you to look in the mirror. Your comments reflect a genuine hate for people who might have a different opinion than yourself. Your words are mean spirited and very hateful.
Mr. Steele is indeed a very articulate and educated man who was selected for his ability to act and not react to the challenges facing the GOP. There is such a double standard in our culture today - so obvious.
Finally, have any of you heard of the great billionare Mr. Madeoff???? He is a card carrying democrat who got tons of money from his friends in the democratic party - namely Chuck Schumer. Have you ever heard of him? Another democrat.
So remember............look in the mirror. You might actually see the real problem.
