Obama: 'I screwed up'

From NBC's Mark Murray and Domenico Montanaro
In his interview with NBC's Brian Williams, which will air this evening on Nightly News, President Obama discussed the withdrawal of Tom Daschle's nomination, the economic stimulus, and the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Video: In an interview with NBC's Brian Williams, Obama talks about making mistakes and trying to usher in an "era of responsibility."

Obama said he was "angry and disappointed" to lose Daschle and Nancy Killefer, who also withdrew her nomination today over a failure to pay some taxes. And the president also took part of the blame. "I appointed these folks. I think they are outstanding people. I think Tom Daschle as an example could have led this health-care effort ... better than just about anybody," the president remarked. "But as he acknowledged, this was a mistake. I don't think it was intentional on his part but it was a serious mistake. He owned up to it and ultimately made a decision that we couldn't afford the distraction, and I've got to own up to my mistake which is that, ultimately, it's important for this administration to send a message that there aren't two sets of rules -- you know, one for prominent people and one for ordinary folks who have to pay their taxes."

Obama later added, "I'm here on television saying I screwed up, and that's part of the era of responsibility. It's not never making mistakes; it's owning up to them and trying to make sure you never repeat them and that's what we intend to do." He also offered one more mea culpa: "[S]o, did I screw up in this situation? Absolutely and I'm willing to take my lumps, you know that's part of the job here. But I think it's important not to paint a broad brush here, because overall, not only have we gotten in place a -- functioning government in record time -- but overall the quality of [the other appointments] are outstanding."

On the economy and his stimulus plan, Obama told Williams, "I'm waking up everyday thinking, 'How do I make sure that ordinary families are able to survive, thrive, send their kids to college, keep their homes, keep their jobs?' And there's no magic bullet. We dug a deep hole for ourselves, and because of some bad decisions that we made, we have the worst economy since the Great Depression."

And Obama also spoke about his consultations with the joint chiefs on Iraq and Afghanistan: "The encouraging thing is that there's actually I think a convergence between myself and the joint chiefs and my national security team about what we have to do. I think there's a general view that we've got to drawdown our troops from Iraq; that we've got to do it responsibly; that we've got to do it carefully. I think the timeframe is closer than it may have appeared during the campaign. I think there's also a shared view that Afghanistan is getting worse, not getting better. And that we have to have a comprehensive strategy that not only deals with the military side but also the diplomacy."

When asked in a news conference after 7 years of being President to name just one mistake he made in the last 7 years GWB could not or would not recall one. That is the difference between an honest and self-evaluating President (Obama) and a narrow-minded and I am always right President (Bush).
Eh. Spare me, Mr. President. (By the way: FIX THE DAMN ECONOMY!!!!!!!)
Thank you, President Obama, for your honesty and forthrightness. We all have high expectations for you, which often means expecting perfection. Despite early critism that you've already begun to "break your promises", this proves one critical point that escaped G.W. Bush for 8 years: Tell us what needs to be told, when it needs to be told, not necessarily what's "easiest" to tell us, or what you think we want to hear or can absorb. I beleive your word is "Transparency". Bush thought the American people were stupid or ignorant. You know better.
Are all of these interviews going to be the reporters breathlessly obsessing over the gossip of the day instead of talking about the stimulus package on which WE NEED INFORMATION - come on guys... I mean, yes, the Daschle withdrawal is news...but jeez how much ink / airtime does it need?? I guess I will reserve judgment until I see the interviews - but judging from the headlines...I'm not too optimistic.
EVERYBODY makes mistakes. I would rather have a President that admits a mistake and learns from it than one who denies any wrongdoing.
Bittersweet. But the bar stays high. Sometimes you lose what you want for the larger principle. Pres. Obama has lived up to his standards. This is exactly
what is needed to lead by example. Turn off the critics in glass houses.
(I have to ask: Aren't there any good ACCOUNTANTS
   in D.C.? )
At least he admits it. Bush would never admit to making a mistake. He was the decider and the decision was made so if you aren't with him your are against him. Period!!!!!

Since we have only had one President who had experience as President when he took the oath of office for a new Administration. That was Grover Cleveland the 22 and 24 President. Even ol' Grover was a rooky the first time. They will all make mistakes. The mistakes made by Obama are miniscule compared to those made by Bush. Obama learns from his mistakes and grows from the lesson learned. Bush never did either, learn nor grow.
Change in culture cannot happen over night. Sacrifices will be necessary to make it happen. Take the time to get the right people in with the right tone and philosophy.  Then get to work and progress can be made.
Get used to hearing it. It's going to happen a LOT!
I think paying your TAXES like everyone else is absolutely required. But ANY of us, even with accountants, if our returns over the years were gone over to vet for a cabinet position, phew boy, you know there would be things we unintentionally missed depending on the complexity of our jobs and income.
Most of this I believe is oversight and the contradictory and totally forshizzle nature of the tax code.
Anyway, frankly, if Atilla the Hun had the answer to the economy and health care, hire him.
Mr President you did screw up, but recognizing that fact and hopefully learning from it then all is not lost.  Mr Daschel, whom I have always admired, bears the bigger burden in this fiasco.

Please,  no more of these inexcusable situations in naming people to your Cabinet and administration, otherwise, you open yourself and your supporters to ridicule from those who wish you and the country ill.
How's it feel America? How's it feel to have an admitted failure in the big chair?

Listen, I know for you liberals that an apology always makes everything all better for you. Whereas an apology is always nice, it still doesn't excuse the behavior. I know you liberals stick together and like to dismiss all the failures like Obama is making in his first 2 weeks in office, but there are some serious problems with this man. It started with his Executive Orders, went to his appointments, and now he's pushing this massive bankrupcy bill he's calling stimulus. Then he makes friends with the terrorists, but tells us Rush Limbaugh is the biggest threat to America. The man is lost.

We made a mistake America. We elected someone that doesn't have a clue.
What kind of moral compass does a man have when he gets information from his own vetting team that his appointees are tax cheats, and he ignores the data?
Republicans kept their powder dry on this one. Democrats ate their own.
ANYWAY
by Kent Keith
People are often unreasonable, irrational, and self-centered.  Forgive them anyway.

If you are kind, people may accuse you of selfish, ulterior motives.  Be kind anyway.

If you are successful, you will win some unfaithful friends and some genuine enemies.  Succeed anyway.

If you are honest and sincere people may deceive you.  Be honest and sincere anyway.

What you spend years creating, others could destroy overnight.  Create anyway.

If you find serenity and happiness, some may be jealous.  Be happy anyway.

The good you do today, will often be forgotten.  Do good anyway.

Give the best you have, and it will never be enough.  Give your best anyway.

In the final analysis..., it was never between you and them anyway.
And this is why I cast my vote for a grown up man who is the very essence of such simply because he can take responsibility for his mistakes not refer to 8 years of he and his administration raping and robbing this country blind as "a few disappointments". We living in the real world of accountability do not see President Obama as a savior, messiah or man with ALL the answers but someone who at least cares enough about the regular folk to try and free us from the holier than thou, NEVER take responsibility for their actions ill gotten gained brats who sit on their azzes and point fingers but offer no solutions just the same ignorant intolerant smarmy garbage that has us where we are and the irrational supporters of this ilk expecting President Obama to save and/or preserve their way of life while they look for the part of his back they have yet to stick blade in. Men like President Obama are worth 1,000 of those other kind.
How refreshing...  "I screwed up"...

It frightens me a newspaper like the NY Times has this much power...  They must be proud...
Just goes to show that Mr. Obama is a puppet.  But as long as you apologize, that makes everything all right.  Now, if only he would admit that he's an idiot!
Obama said he screwed up but also said that he thought Daschle's mistakes were "honest."
All these Obama picks that have tax problems were "honest" mistakes. Bulls***!

It looks to me like Obama doesn't know an honest man from a crook, someone who is trying to get away with something. Obama is a real bad judge of character.
Yeah, real bad.
Whatever! Obama's mistake is that he has no spine. the dems are in charge? Why is he kissing republican a$$?? Get a clue, Obama, or start packing. 4 years is too long with this gutless clown. Can't wait for Hillay to run!
Obama knows what 'news' outlet to run to when he doesn't want the tough questions, and wants to get his propaganda out to the masses.
Is the President wearing a hearing aid?  What was in his left ear during the interview?
I feel bad for both nominees who realized their withdrawal is necessary. However, all of Congress should have their tax records checked, I'm sure the findings would be  shocking,,!!!!!
12 - 22

No one is happy about this except the GOP - whatever will they do with an honest man? faint?
I thinks Obama is playing with his old Lincoln Logs toy while he makes these sad and demeaning cabinet picks. Clearly he doesn't have his mind on it.

We need a real president. Obama is one big excuse after another.
Gingerbread, I did not vote for Obama and I question his ability to lead this country and the descisions he makes but I do not wish him or my country ill. I hope that my country rebounds and is once again the leader of the free world, it will not happen with him at the wheel.
                 TESTING HIS METAL

CAN PRESIDENT OBAMA STAND THE TEST?

President Obama is not perfect!!  Who among us is?

I still hold him in high esteem.  I'm pray for him and wish his a successful admininstration.

A chief executive -- Presidnet Obama, to be specific -- must be able to weather storms.  If he can endure this kind of test now, at the beginning of his term, there a good chance he can last the remainder.

It takes TREMENDOUS courage to accept blame and responsibility for one's action.  We've become so accustom to hearing politicians SPIN every sentence that is hard to discern the truth.  I applaud President Obama for his honesty.  I know this makes him vulnerable, and I'm sure there are many who are ready to pounce.

I have a certain confidence that, just as he weathered many storms throughout his campaign, he'll weather these.

WHATEVER CAN'T BE TESTED, CAN'T BE TRUSTED !!

Time will reveal what kind of metal President Obama is made of.  Can he stand the test of time?  I believe he can.  Yes, he can!!
Great, you screwed up, nice to see some candor and humility after the fool that preceded you. Now, unless you want to look like Nero playing the Lyre while Rome burned, get something through Congress to help with this downturn and do whatever it takes to do it. That's your job.
Mr. President:  Don't let it happen again where you have a double standard.  How about the nominee for Undersecreatary of Defense who is a lobbyist?  Just because your Secreatary of Defense Robert Gates wants him is no reason to waive your own ethic rules.  There must be one standard for all because there are many very qualified people who can be appointed to important positions within your administration who support your progressive platform.
I don't know Ted Dawson - you tell me how it feels to have a PROVEN failure sitting in that chair for 8 years.  Go back to your sewer and pout.
To: Can't Figure This One Out,
Ask that same question of your beloved George W Bush!! President Obama to his credit has accepted that it was a mistake and thats proof of his new era of transparency, accountability and wait for it...RESPONSIBILITY! Something that Bush never had.
Look, this was just a ste back, and you're going have many more. THIS ONE IS NOT NEARLY AS SEVERE AS YOUR PREDECESSOR!!! Thank you for your forthrightness in admitting a mistake. That's more than what ANYBODY in the previous administration EVER DID.

Tom Daschle was a loss, so we move on to find some one to replace him and Richardson. That is all you can do.

NOW, GET UP, DUST YOURSELF OFF, AND GET TO WORK FIXING THIS COUNTRY!!!!!
the congressional republicans, after not a one, zip, zero, nada, voted for the country's economic stimulus bill, is now consulting with joe the plumber. these must be the same ones who comment about what a mistake americans made by elected president obama. the republicans put us in this hole and now they have seen the light and have become of champions of small government. geez, maybe we should tell people in kentucky to go ask their republican friends for help.
well at least the president said it,,,,,I havent heard the politicians in washington who increased there office budjet to almost 40 million more and taking a pay raise while american continue to lose there jobs. golly we have to work for years in order to get a pension while you get one after six yrs....that why i want to be a senator i need the money and the spiffs.....remember for eight years you were a do nothing washington so even though i might not be qualified accoding to your standards i could have done your job as good as you.....YOU DID NOTHING AND CREATED A NIGHT MARE....OH I BLAME SOME OF THE DEMOCRATS TO...BUT OVERALL YOUR WERE THE MAJORITY
The concern that most of us have about his failed appointments is they do open the door to criticism, justifiable to the "nth" degree. Better to have that occur now than months from now. What is not "justifiable" is the low lifes that have no intent other than to destroy the President, those that want nothing less than to see him fail. They see the President's current dilemma as prophecy of what we can expect of him. This is mere wishful thinking that is an abnormal reaction by unpatriotic Americans. It happened, he knows how we feel, get over it.
The President misstates the case referring to this as the worst economy since the Great Depression.

I think it behooves the president (No Drama Obama) to state things accurately and not rely on overwrought dramatic cliches.  The campaign is over.

Unemployment peaked at 10.8% in the early 80's recession.  Interest rates were in the 18-20% range, mortgage rates 15-17%. Inflation adjusted gasoline prices were higher, except for the peaks we had this past summer.  Even at the peak, gas prices were only moderately higher after adjusting for inflation.

Unemployment in December, 2008 was 7.2% and probably going higher but may or may not reach 9%, much less 10.8%.

The high unemployment rate in the 1992 recession was 7.8%. We could reach that this month.

The rhetoric almost approaches fear tactics.  And what does it have to do with explaining his "screw-up" with Tom Daschle?

I think the real screw-up here was not telling the New York Times where to put their latest issue, and nutting up and confirming Daschle.

Being a Republican, I've never loved Daschle, but it was Obama's appointment and he would have been appointed unless there was more dirt out there somewhere.  As it was, he might have taken some grief, but confirmation was a sure thing.  Don't understand why they folded up the tent.  Not very decisive and not very confidence building.  I'd rather see you guys fight for the confirmation, especially in these cases where they have only made mistakes.

Same with the Chief Performance Officer.  We need some toughness here.  Look at the threshold that's been set.  Can they confirm anyone from here on out?

Besides Judd Gregg, I mean.

Probably cursed him.

I'm 95% serious here.  Grow some spine, Mr. President.
Daschle led the same type of Lobbyist, corrupt life after office as all those that Obama likes to criticize.
Because he didn't register as one, makes no difference.
The tax issue is peanuts compared to the stink of insider collusion that Obama overlooked to support Daschle.
If this tax issue didn't come up, Obama would have this lobbyist in his cabinet, in charge of regulating an industry he has smelly ties with.
This is outrage from congress that confirmed Attorney Generals with evasive answers and allowed them to lie about torture and violated the Constitution and did nothing about it?
Nope. A war in Afghanistan. But seeing it's Obama's war, you're for that one, right?

Willie Detz (Sent Tuesday, February 03, 2009 2:17 PM)

A war to get the guys that ACTUALLY did harm to us is just. One to revenge a statement by some two bit dictator that he was gonna get Dubya's daddy is quite another. It has nothing to do with Obama but everything to do with the very poor decisions of Bush.

for Democrat Soldier - glad to help

You know, it's just a thought, but maybe these terrorist fellows might have moved around since 2001? What in the world makes you think "the ones responsible" are in Afghanistan?

And, at last look, a lot of them showed up to fight in Iraq, and either got captured (good) or lost their little lives (best). Some are still at Gitmo. That's called being productive, at least to most of the people in America it is. Not sure where you sit on that issue.

Ok fine a mistake has been made but if there is one out there in the political world who has not let them speak now.... WHAT..No one??? Ok let's put the focus back on the true issues shall we!!!!
Ted Dawson, NH,

You are obviously an idiot and you are the one without the clue. Utterly stupid and narrow minded liars like you are one of the greatest threats to this country. You are part of the problem, not the solution. This country has enough problems without backstabbing anti-American gutter trash like you walking around wasting air. I pray you didn't breed.

This outrage is from a congress that confirmed Attorney Generals with evasive answers and lied about torture and think that the constitution is irrelevant and did nothing aboout it?
"Then he makes friends with the terrorists"

I did not know he was friends with G. Gordon Libby, thought he was McCain's buddy.
I appreciate that fact that Presidient Obama admitted he made a mistake; we all have and will probably make more before all is said and done.  I too had an accountant that made a mistake on my taxes.  Unfortunately by the time the IRS discovered it my accountant and passed away and I could not really explain what he had done.  I wound up paying through  my you know what.  So I do understand how these things can happen.  I also feel the people who did the vetting for the President needs to step up to the plate.
This is way more than admitting your wrong, Daschle was just another of his unvetted picks, Remember Richardson had to bow out too- Whose doing the vetting for your Mr. President, MSNBC!!!!!
Anyone remember the last time they heard a President admit failure, or take full responsibility for it?  Didn't think so.

Thank you Mr. President.
To you Ted Dawson, Bush had no experince in congress or the senate before he becaome Pres, he was also a 1 Term Gov and a failed business man in oil.

What's your point, Pres Obama has more common sense the Pre Bush ever had and at least he can own up and admit that he made a mistake.  There are few people in this country who hasn't had to pay back taxes or have had tax problems. If the man was the best person for the job and could fix the overall ecomony of this nation let him fix it!!

Have you not made mistakes on your job and your life and you haven't been given the benefit of the doubt.  I think not, and you better be glad or your life could be a lot different.

We as Amercians don't know all the in's and out's of what is going on in Washington, so we really don't have the complete understanding to judge.
OMG - a President that actually ADMITS a mistake when it happens?!?!  Sounds kind of like "taking personal responsibility...."

Imagine that, an example a Republican should be proud of, but probably won't, because that's just a talking point for them, not something meant to be applied to themselves.

They're better at assigning blame than taking responsibility, since they've had lots of practice doing the former and almost none of the latter.
At least it's three words that we have not heard in 8 years, although it was the previous administration that should have said them to the American public on a nightly basis. You rightwing nuts and dumbie-cons on this board truly sicken me. To think that in this country is a faction of utter idiots who cling to your hopes for the President's failure so that the ship goes down... Oh wait a minute-- wouldn't you then also perish? Talk about cutting off noses to spite your faces.
Who in their right mind would want to be President in such a situation as there is in America right now. Worst economy since depression, millions out of work, amount rising daily, homelessness on the increase in the country which is supposed to be the leader of the free world, 2 expensive wars, a million dollar jail in Iraq that hs no occupants-wow, how USA could use those trillions of dollars now, that were wasted trying to find WMD's which they all knew were non-existent. and yet, the GOP quibbling over less money in a stimulus plan and behaving like jilted lovers or errant schoolboys. WHI IN HIS RIGHT MIND WOULD WANT TO BE PRESIDENT INTHIS MESS. Presiden Obama, you are a brave man. My prayers are with you. It's going to be all right.
