First thoughts: The ways of Washington

From Chuck Todd, Mark Murray, and Domenico Montanaro
*** The ways of Washington: When Barack Obama launched his presidential bid in Springfield, IL, here’s what he said: “I know I haven't spent a lot of time learning the ways of Washington. But I've been there long enough to know that the ways of Washington must change.” The irony? The folks that have caused him the most trouble in the last two years have old Washington hands like Jim Johnson, Bill Richardson, and Tom Daschle. If President Obama listened to his own rhetoric, he would have avoided all three embarrassments. He's been making the case of changing the ways Washington did business, and NOT relying on old Washington hands is one of the ways to avoid old mistakes. There is a moment for Obama to turn lemons into lemonade here -- by sending the message to Washington and to Congress (in particular) that he's willing to allow a close ally like Daschle go, then he isn't going to be easily pressured on the political front, maybe. At least that's the message the administration needs to sell.

*** Future of health-care reform: So who will own the big portfolio that is health care? There is a vacuum now. On the Hill, Senate Finance Committee Chairman Max Baucus wants to be at the forefront of the debate, but there are a lot of angry Senate Dems at Baucus this morning (lots of finger-pointing at him today over the Daschle issue). Ted Kennedy's own health may prevent him from taking the role he wants to play, but he could pick a partner and go forward. And then there's Obama. Will he use the same model he had created with Daschle -- give his health-care person both a cabinet post and a West Wing office? If Obama wants a big-name person to take this issue on, he'll have to offer the same structure. An early front-runner is Kansas Gov. Kathleen Sebelius. The idea of a governor, who isn't afraid of the legislative process but isn't a creature of it, may be exactly what the president is looking for. Other names on the list include ex-Oregon Gov. John Kitzhaber (who may truly campaign for it); Howard Dean (who will NEVER get tapped but has plenty of supporters who will force his name on potential candidate lists); and John Podesta (who doesn't have a gig in the Obama administration, but did help put together the transition). Then again, is Podesta going to take heat for any of these early hiccups?

Video: Sen. Olympia Snow discusses whether Daschle's withdrawal is a loss to health care overhaul under the Obama administration.

*** Obama’s salary cap: One reason why Daschle had to go -- he would have potentially contradicted Obama’s message today on executive pay and perks. As the president told NBC's Brian Williams yesterday, "It's important for this administration to send a message that there aren't two sets of rules." Per sources, the president and Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner will announce at 11:00 am ET that they will limit the annual salaries of senior executives for companies receiving large amounts of bailout money to $500,000 per year. Moreover, any additional compensation will be in restricted stock that will not vest until taxpayers have been paid back. And all banks will face tougher restrictions, including restrictions on golden parachutes and “say on pay” shareholder policies to give a voice to average investors about salary structures for top executives. Banks also will face tougher transparency rules, including on expenses such as aviation services, office renovations, entertainment and holiday parties, conferences and events, and golden parachutes. The intended purpose of this rollout: to make it politically easier for Congress to support another financial bailout.

Video: How will Obama's new $500,000 salary cap will affect executives?

*** Here’s bipartisan support for you: Lost in yesterday’s Daschle news, of course, was Obama officially naming New Hampshire Sen. Judd Gregg (R) to serve as Commerce secretary. The Gregg pick is truly astounding when one looks at his ideological place in the GOP. He isn't Jim Jeffords, Lincoln Chafee, or Ray LaHood. Does Gregg's nomination help blunt the talk about a lack of Republican support for Obama’s stimulus plan? It might more than Washington folks think… Will the average voter who is following the Obama administration on issues -- but not keeping partisan score -- notice how many Republicans support Obama's stimulus plan as long as it passes? Won't the picture of Republicans in his cabinet send the longer-term bipartisan message? Probably so. Meanwhile, the Washington Post is reporting that “Senate Democratic leaders conceded yesterday that they do not have the votes to pass the stimulus bill as currently written and said that to gain bipartisan support, they will seek to cut provisions that would not provide an immediate boost to the economy.” Time for the White House and Senate Dems to get to work...

Video: Rachel Maddow explains her thoughts on why Gregg might not be the best choice to head Commerce.

*** Also on Obama’s agenda: In addition to announcing his cap on executive pay, President Obama today will meet with Secretary of State Clinton and George Mitchell in the Oval Office (which is closed to the press); he’ll sign the SCHIP legislation into law (open press); and he’ll meet with Interior Secretary Ken Salazar in the Oval Office (closed press). Tomorrow, per CBN’s Brody, Obama will announce “the creation of a new President's Advisory Council on Faith during this Thursday's National Prayer Breakfast in Washington DC.”

*** Wanna bet this makes news today? In an interview with Politico, Dick Cheney -- sounding just like he finished watching the latest “24” episode -- “warned that there is a ‘high probability’ that terrorists will attempt a catastrophic nuclear or biological attack in coming years, and said he fears the Obama administration’s policies will make it more likely the attempt will succeed.”

*** Show Me a race: Yesterday, Missouri Secretary of State Robin Carnahan -- the daughter of the state’s late governor (Mel) and former U.S. senator (Jean) -- announced that she’s running for the Senate seat being vacated next year by Republican Sen. Kit Bond. Carnahan is a BIG recruit for the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee. With a possible GOP primary between Rep. Roy Blunt and ex-Sen. Jim Talent, the Missouri Senate contest will have it all next year: big-name candidates, lots of money, and all in presidential battleground state. Political reporters, start booking your 2010 travel to Missouri ASAP…

*** An end of an (Iowa) era: Speaking of political reporters, the dean of Iowa politics -- the Des Moines Register’s David Yepsen -- is expected to leave the paper to become the director of the Paul Simon Public Policy Institute at Southern Illinois University. Who will fill Yepsen’s shoes in 2012? (Hat tip: our former colleague Carrie Dann, who now works at CongressDaily.)

*** The never-ending recount: And in case you forgot, that Coleman-Franken recount in Minnesota still isn’t over. (Sigh.) Yesterday, a three-judge panel ruled that Coleman could bring evidence to trial that as many as 4,800 absentee ballots were improperly rejected. As the Minneapolis Star Tribune writes, the ruling keeps alive Coleman’s hopes of erasing Franken’s 225-vote lead by potentially putting more ballots into play. But the decision doesn’t mean that these ballots were wrongly rejected or, if they were, whether they’d actually benefit Coleman.

The most likely match-up for Missouri Republicans would oppose Blunt to Treasurer Sarah Steelman, and now THAT would be a bruising primary the state GOP might not survive from. While Blunt is reportedly talking to Talent about the latter not running in 10, Steelman is already taking shots at Blunt, calling him an "insider." (http://campaigndiaries.com/2009/02/03/missouris-robin-carnahan-announces-senate-run/)
It's refreshing to have a president that admits he's an idiot.
Without a doubt Obama has defined the highest standards ever. But that just means he violates his standards more.

The practice doesn't support the theory I guess. Not even close.
I watched snippets of the Obama interviews last night. I really like our new President. He's honest, straight forward, and very, very intelligent. What ever he does, its cool with me! CHeney, isn't he dead yet?
What could go wrong with the government setting pay scales on businesses they support? Then all those  businesses will be run like say, the Post Office and the Department of Motor Vehicals. I for one look forward to the changes.
Republicans don't support the stimulus package because it's not a stimulus package. It's a bloated government giveaway to Democratic causes. It creates no jobs, and expands entitlement spending. It's a bill that reflects what Nancy Pelosi's biggest wet-dream would look like.
Obama is making a big mistake nominating a complete idiot like Judd Gregg to run the Commerce Department he tried to eliminate last decade.  Not to mention he's one of the disgusting extremist repugnant ones who will work against him.  That's not the change I voted for.

Speaking of Judd's I really love Ashley Judd taking on the Wasilla Hillbilly for her support of the cowardly aerial hunting of wolves.  Only lazy cowards would hunt wolves or any aniimal by helicopter and the Wasilla Hillbilly has proven she is lazy and cowardly.  Compared to gorgeous Ashley Judd the Wasilla Hag needs a big bag to put over her face.

Impeach Palin!
First Read:  Someone explain to us why you think Dean will "NEVER" be nominated.
This is going to be a CRAZY news day, isn't it? :)
Fox actually didn't kiss Obama's butt, and asked him if he would continue to support Daschle if Daschle didn't withdraw. Obama answered 'Yes'! You have got to be kidding! Obama supports tax cheats in his administration! Then Obama started the standard Washington dodge to the question, "I don't want to answer hypothetical questions." What loser this man is.
I hope that Obama will find a good replacement for HHS so that we can get universal health care.  I'm sick and tired of the broken health care system we have where the insurance companies rip us off for big payments then deny paying the bills when they come due.  We can't trust big business to take care of us, just their bottom line.

Another bad idea is creating a idiotic faith council.  The evangelical christian lunatiuc fringe has been wrecking our country for the past 30 years ever since they started sticking their ignorant noses in to politics.  If they want to play politics then the churches should start paying taxes.  Look how much money they recently wasted on prop hate here in CA instead of using that money to help poor people like they claim they do.

Tax the Church!
" GONZO-GATE " ... STAY TUNED FOR FURTHER UPDATES.
FR: Yesterday, Missouri Secretary of State Robin Carnahan -- the daughter of the state’s late governor (Mel) and former U.S. senator (Jean) --

Missouri politics isn't much different then Illinois politics I see. Nepotism on top of nepotism. At least on the Democratic side. Must be something in the Mississippi River water.
Dick Cheney -- sounding just like he finished watching the latest “24” episode -- “warned that there is a ‘high probability’ that terrorists will attempt a catastrophic nuclear or biological attack in coming years...
------------------------------------------------------
I would recommend that some tenacious journalist (do you still have those, MSNBC?) do a little digging and follow former VP Cheney's most recent investments.  He has profited more than almost anyone from military and defense spending.
Sebelius might be a good choice.  I lived in Oregon when Kitzhaber was Governor and don't recall him doing much of anything in that position.
How come every bill Obama has signed so far makes the American taxpayer have a larger burden to carry?
I wonder how many Democrats are running around today paying the taxes they have owed, but avoided, for the last decade. I think we're going to see a real spike in revenues collected at the IRS. Only holdout seems to be Charlie Rangle.
'...Howard Dean (who will NEVER get tapped but has plenty of supporters who will force his name on potential candidate lists)...'

HUH ??
Why NEVER ?
I've read that Rahm Emmanuel doesn't want him
Is THAT the reason ?

Dean is a fine man

'...you forgot, that Coleman-Franken recount in Minnesota still isn’t over. (Sigh.) Yesterday, a three-judge panel ruled that Coleman could ...'

Coleman is one step above Blago only because he gets better media coverage

He IS a grifter, tapping supporters for Free Rent, Free Clothes and a Job for his wife

How is THAT different from Blago  ??

It's OVER Norm !!
Give it UP
Go AWAY and Take Dick Cheney with you !!
President Obama, like all members of our government, is human. Humans are not perfect.

As we gleefully cover all the warts and contradictions that we find, let us also set aside equal time for the actual policies.

Other than taking responsibility for the faulty vetting of several of his cabinet selections (so proud of our President), the part of President Obama's interview that was most surprising to me was the fact that all the "pork" that the Republican Party and the media has been hyperventilating about for two weeks now represents less than 1% of the stimulus bill passed by the house.

Got that?

One percent of the bill is getting 100% of the media coverage.

The rest of the bill has been largely undiscussed.

Why is that?

Is there anyone in the media who can LEAD the pack instead of just follow it?
Obama Administration - Worst Start Ever!!
And why is creepy Cheney still on the loose?  SCARE TACTICS is all he knows.

Wait until AG Holder gets to him?  Why doesn't he just go away?  He is just trying to cloud issues!
Are those training wheels I see that have been put on the Oval Office?
David M:  I will gladly shoulder more taxation to ensure that the poor and needy children in this country receive adequate medical care.  They are our future and our greatest investment.

Dr Seuss had a book 'Put me in the Zoo'

Dick Cheney's book should be 'Put me in the Hague'

A War Criminal !!
You noted that Howard Dean would "NEVER" get tapped for HHS, but you didn't bother to explain your rationale for such a damning statement.  Praytell, why?  (I think I know, intials R.E., but let's see you put that out there OFFICIALLY!)
Why are Liberals so afraid of a radio talk show host?
Coleman is one step above Blago only because he gets better media coverage

He IS a grifter, tapping supporters for Free Rent, Free Clothes and a Job for his wife

How is THAT different from Blago  ??

-----------------------------------------------
And Franken owed back taxes in 17 states until last summer.  Quite a pillar of decency.   How is that different from Daschle, Geithner, and Charlie Rangel?
Speaking of Judd's I really love Ashley Judd taking on the Wasilla Hillbilly for her support of the cowardly aerial hunting of wolves.  Only lazy cowards would hunt wolves or any aniimal by helicopter and the Wasilla Hillbilly has proven she is lazy and cowardly.  Compared to gorgeous Ashley Judd the Wasilla Hag needs a big bag to put over her face
-------------------------------------------------
I love these clueless celebrities.  This isn't about caring for the wolves, it's about hammering Sarah Palin.  If someone truly cared about the animals, they'd be thrilled that hunting wolves are encouraged because those wolves decimate the deer and moose populations in Alaska.
Obama has enough goodwill built up that saying 'I made a mistake' once will work for him.  But he can't keep making mistakes without starting to really wonder what we elected.  And heading off to an elementary school because 'he had to get out of the White House' ?  Please.
I just hope Pres. Obama does not cave in too much to the GOP. They are the reason the country is in this predicament in the first place. The Dems need to step up and improve the bill for the betterment of our country. As for McConnel and the other Reps. while they might have a point on this Stimulus bill, I get the feeling they are just playing politics as usual instead of looking out for the country.  I still trust the president over these partisans.
Senate Democratic leaders conceded yesterday that they do not have the votes to pass the stimulus bill as currently written and said that to gain bipartisan support, they will seek to cut provisions that would not provide an immediate boost to the economy.” Time for the White House and Senate Dems to get to work…
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ Only because  Extreme partisans like big, fat, idiotic, windbag, Rush Limbaugh a.k.a. Head of Republicans who lack  moral identity and reason along with that stupid, puppet, Hannity, bone-headed Boehner, rock star Cantor, and ya’ll know the rest of them  want  President Obama’s stimulus plan, as well as, President Obama’s administration to  fail. If they really value this Country they would not be so divisive.

Using class warfare, pork, and touting tax cuts is so-o-o-o tired. These Republicans lie (d) about the Stimulus Plan by saying our tax dollars are being used for illegals, welfare recipients, arts, ACORN, and sex.  After 8 years, plus the Reagan years no matter what class you’re in the effect of this dire economy has taken its toll. Didn't President Obama  say honestly it would not be easy? At least he apologized for his mistake. It’s more apologizing than Republicans have given  for their reluctance to put country instead of party first. I may be wrong; but, I neither remember John McCain apologizing for not paying his taxes for his multiple houses for 5 year nor the war hawks or ex-president Bush for lying about false weapons of mass destruction, Katrina. Those type of republicans will do anything  to see this economy falter even more. Then they can say President Obama failed.

Silly republicans the healthcare industry needs jobs too. I think Paul Krugman explains it best in his piece in the NYT called…

Bad Faith Economics …
"Conservatives really, really don’t want to see a
second New Deal, and they certainly don’t want to see government activism vindicated. So they are reaching for any stick they can find with which to beat proposals for increased government spending."

Btw: Cheney -- sounding be more cornered about Eric Holder's Justice and the Hague instead of  terrorists bringing a catastrophic nuclear or biological attack in coming years. That would be a better use of his scare tactics than his fears of Presidenet Obama administration’s policies  making it more likely the attempt will succeed.

I see the President Obama haters are out in force today. Look, the President told us early and often that he would never lie to us and that he would make some mistakes. He has been diligent on both fronts and when he took responsibility for the Daschle misstep, I was proud of him for being honest and speaking candidly and honestly about the situation.

Changing Washington is not going to be easy but the President has the guts to step up to the plate and try.

Oh, and Dick Cheney---you weren't relevant then and you are not relevant now. Keep your wishful thinking to yourself. You, your former boss, and Karl Rove should all be wearing orange jumpsuits and picking up litter along the highways.
OBAMA'S FOREIGN POLICY WILL BE ANOTHER "I am sorry, I made a mistake" === but it will be a very, very costly mistake.

OBAMA IS RETURNING TO THE BILL CLINTON FOREIGN POLICY THAT ALLOWED AL-QAEADA TO FLOURISH AND ATTACK AMERICA!

DOES OBAMA REALLY BELIEVE THAT HE CAN WOO THE SO-CALLED 'MODERATE' ARABS & MUSLIMS AND THAT THEY CAN PREVENT THE TERRORISSTS FROM ATTACKING US?

OBAMA'S ENDING "THE WAR ON TERROR" TERMINOLOGY SHOWS HOW IGNORANT HE REALLY IS OF WORLD AFFAIRS.   SCARY!
I wouldn't say the start of this administration has gone splat. That's your opinion. Now as to fact, no  President before Obama has had to follow GWB and what he left behind for Obama and this country
------------------------------------------------------
C A in Tuscaloosa, come on.  You're not really going to blame George Bush for Obama's vetting problems and his less than ethical choices so far, are you?
Alaskan - Speaking of Judd's I really love Ashley Judd.

It's always good to listen to mindless Hollywood types. They do bring a unique perspective (the Idiot perspective) on the issues of the day.
If anyone in Washington D.C. says they can't be replaced..

LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi Nashville fan:

That means that the Republican Party must approve of the other 99% since they have not bitched and moaned about it!

*******************************************************

I think the President is doing great. Just think of all of the people he has put in place so far with no problem.

It is time for us Americans to concentrate on the positives and stop following the media's habit of creating havoc.

I really think that folks that do not want healthcare fixed were behind this Daschle mess. He screwed up— but the bigger picture got lost in the details.

Also WHY IS THE MEDIA HELPING TO KEEP THIS NASTY REPUBLICAN FIGHT GOING BY GIVING THEM CONSTANT BIASED EXPOSURE???!

PRESIDENT OBAMA IS THE PRESIDENT OF ALL OF US.

President Obama admitted he will make mistakes. The fact that he faces them is such an improvement over the previous administration and its followers.
He is intelligent, genuine and capable of leading our country out of the diasters of these last eight years. The republicans, after eight years of one diaster after another, are now the "experts" on economy? Talk about admitting mistakes, they have yet
to acknowledge or try to correct what they have done to our country.
There must be unification for the survival of our country. If they continue to refuse, payback time will come with the next elections.
This is too funny. The Republicans have 41 Senators, and THEY are crafting the stimulus bill!! Obama has already given up on his own party!! His ex-Senate-mates!
You are wrong in the thinking/writing that Daschle is just another hack who should be banned from HHS. He was America's great hope, along with helping the ailing Sen. Kennedy, the American people had of getting Health Care. He knew the subject inside and out, written about it and knew how to get things through the Senate.

This was a concentrated effort by the corporate news media, the powerful Insurance Lobby and the Republicans working behind the scenes to make sure he failed.

I thought better of you, Chuck.  Since the inauguration, all the cable news have lined up one Republican after the other to get on camera to slam Obama. And the Republicans, who are on life support, never met a camera they didn't love.  So, all your buddies have provided the very minority party to get on your shows and spew and spout as though they were important.  When Obama's poll number start to fall, blame yourself.  Don't sit back wide-eyed and say, "who me?"

I hope you all will be satisfied when another 30 years go by and everyone in America will not be able to afford health care.  You all did a bang up job on Daschle and all of you let the rest of the "vestal virgins"in congress get by, ignoring thier dirty hands at the trough of big business and power.

Congratulations.  I hope the scoop was worth it.
David M:  I will gladly shoulder more taxation to ensure that the poor and needy children in this country receive adequate medical care.  They are our future and our greatest investment.
Joe - STL

Nothing is stopping you from sending in a check Joe. Make it out to the 'IRS'. And do you consider 26 year olds "children"?
Here is a question:

If Dick Cheney is so smart, why did he spend George Bush's entire second term hiding, only reappearing for occasional heart checkups?

He wasn't hiding from the law or anything, was he?

How is spending money we don't have on a "wars" with no definable goals keeping us safer?

How is torturing prisoners, and then being dumb enough to photograph it all and email it to friends making us safer?

Even Jack Bauer would tell you that's a dumb plan, and let's not forget, he's a FICTIONAL character (and I for one am glad he is!).

Gee whiz "Dick", retire already.

Which ones? Some radio talk show host are funny. Some appear to be quite intelligent. Then there are those like Limbaugh and Hannity. No one is afraid of them. They just plain suck. Don't you agree?

Here is a question for you Rads. Explain what came first, the chicken or the egg? (I'll use a strategy Hannity uses with guests he disagrees with)...Just answer yes or no, yes or no. Who's next for this dream team?  I hear Blagojevich is looking for a job.  He'd fit in perfectly with this administration.
I really like Obama's idea of capping salaries, so let's start with the Congress and Senate - they are paid with taxpayer money, correct?  Let's cap their unbelievable benefits while we're at it.

Good idea!!
There's gotta be a couple senators that will vote for the stimulus.  There is clearly more risk in running against a democrat if the stimulus is successful and you didn't vote for it then it is to run against a democrat if the stimulus fails but you both voted for it.

Right on, "Alaskan"!  How dare those wolves do what comes naturally by eating deer and moose and caribou!  They have some nerve!

Grow up.
I think all of us have done and said things we regret. President Obama is a human being just like we are. He made some mistakes, he owned up and apologized let's cut him some slack, and move on. Joe Scarborough is not willing to do this, he spent all morning talking about President Obama's remark about "I Won" which was said in a joking manner. Mike Barbacle kept reminding him it was a joke, but Joe would not let go.Should we keep reminding Joe about the day he dropped the F bomb on the air. Like I said we all say things we regret, that applies to Joe as well. Let's move on.

Just sick of their spoon fed no it all BS.
Suburban Mom you are so dead on with your assessment of Cheney. That tid bit from him is just enough to keep people buying the survival kits and crap. Like people did when they thought the world was gonna end in 2000.  To be honest the way that Terror Alerts were used around the Bush re-election I would say that the Bush Press was the biggest terrorist because they used fear to steal oops win an election.  Did you not notice that after he won his second election that the Terror Alerts went away. Cheney is and always will be a War Profiteer. Unless true jutice is served and he is placed under a jail.
