Obama urges passage of stimulus

At an event today to announce the members of his Economic Recovery Advisory Board, President Obama highlighted the latest jobs numbers and kept up his campaign-style rhetoric Friday, urging quick passage of the stimulus bill.

Echoing a statement his team put out this morning after the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported some 598,000 jobs were lost in January and unemployment rose to 7.6%, Obama said that the data demonstrated the urgency of the situation, and that it was inexcusable and irresponsible for Congress to get bogged down in distraction, delay, or politics as usual at this time.

"The American people did not choose more of the same," he said. "They did not send us to Washington to get stuck in partisan posturing, to try to score political points or to turn back to the same tried and failed approaches that were rejected because we saw the results. They sent us here to make change and the expectation that we would act."

He said that while the bill before Congress was not perfect, it was "absolutely necessary" and would continue to be refined and improved.

The purpose of the advisory board, which Obama announced plans for during his transition, is to offer the president independent advice about how to ensure a strong economic recovery from outside of what the president called the "Washington echo chamber." It will initially have a two-year term.

Paul Volcker will serve as chairman of the board and Austan Goolsbee is its staff director and chief economist. Among the board's members: former SEC Chairman William H. Donaldson; TIAA-CREF President Roger W. Ferguson, Jr.; UBS CEO Robert Wolf; David F. Swensen the CIO of Yale University; Pritzker Realty's Penny Pritzker, who is a close Obama friend from Chicago; General Electric CEO Jeffrey Immelt; Caterpillar CEO Jim Owens; La Opinion Publisher Monica Lozano; Change to Win's Anna Burger; and Laura D'Andrea Tyson, dean of the University of California at Berkeley's Haas School of Business.

Harvard professor Martin Feldstein, an adviser to President Reagan and proponent of supply-side economics, is also on the board. Feldstein wrote an op-ed in the Washington Post last week that was pro-stimulus, but that also criticized the form of the tax cuts in the package. Feldstein said the spending in it would not do enough to boost employment.

"The problem with the current stimulus plan is not that it is too big but that it delivers too little extra employment and income for such a large fiscal deficit. It is worth taking the time to get it right," he wrote.

Feldstein could be seen as a representative of the "failed theories" of the past that Obama railed against on the campaign trail and in his increasingly tough language this week -- proof that the president wants different voices at the table.

"I'm not interested in groupthink, which is why the board reflects a broad cross-section of experience, expertise, and ideology," the president said, adding that the group included Republicans and Democrats, people from government as well as the private sector and advocates of business and labor.

"Not everyone is going to agree with each other, and not all of them are going to agree with me -- and that's precisely the point. Because we want to ensure that our policies have the benefit of independent thought and vigorous debate."

That is the right tone  to sensible people and obstructionist from President Obama.

Don’t confuse new social networking tools and strategies with socialism. To stop draconian slashes in social programs is very un-democratic not socialism. Republicans only want to undermine Obama on his first 100 days. Stupid Hannity has a poster which is supposed to reveal the real Obama. It’s just another obstructive tactic similar to what Limbaugh used for ex-President Clinton, daily, during Clinton’s administration.  And don’t forget Gingrinch holding up Congress on his BS. All this is the same scenario to try and garner defeating Obama in 2012. Some stupid republicans agree that they want him to fail because idiotic Limbaugh said.
What do they have to lose?  They think nothing about sensible reasons as to why they’re already losers I guess if the unemployment goes to double digits; many then, and only then, will they be satisfied. They’re to myopic to see or think about a backlash in 2010.

Reaganomics...like his openion counts...seems that every "expert" in the country has an openion on how to fix something that we've never been in before. This surpasses the great depression because of the population we now have in our country. His openion means nothing to me.
We are quick to pass, the joke, of what is called a  Stimulus Bill , just as fast as the TARP was passed and look at the result of that passage.   Americans lost more than they gained.  Fear mongering = Obama administration!  What does Bee Insurance , stop smoking  and STD teaching have to do with stimulating the Economy?  Stimulus Bill is full of Socialistic earmarks.  NO! EARMARKS, VOICED OBAMA!  WAKE UP, AMERICA.
I am just 'thinking out loud' here, but didn't Bush declare an emergency, wasn't that part of the run up to the war?  Well, my thought is - since the Constitution has been shredded, maybe Obama can just issue an executive order to procedurally change the way they system 'works' (using the term loosely).

Naaahhh, that's something the Republicans would endorse.  Let's stay within the realm of legal.  But boy, it's sure tempting to think about.

Add Robert Reich, Paul Krugman and Joseph Stiglitz to this board

You might want to add some labor and environmental voices to this board

They're outside the Washington 'echo chamber' and they're outside the Wall Street 'Insiders Circle'

How about some progressive voices ??
"Tried and failed" is right! Boy George screwed the pooch so badly believing the laissez-faire Capitalism of Reagan, Gingrich and Gramm would enrich the country; it only enriched the already-super-rich, as it was intended to do.  Enough. Let's move on from failed Bush policies and the damage they and the GOP have wrought.
POTUS said that while the bill before Congress was not perfect, it was "absolutely necessary."

GOP opposes caps on execs salaries while simultaneously opposing help for the poor.
They cut billions of dollars in food stamps out of the stimulus bill.

And they call themselves Christians.

Nothing new here. This is typical of the morally bankrupt GOP, but what gets me is that that Obama, the Dems AND the corporate media are all giving them legitimacy AND concessions that they don't deserve rather than calling them out again and again and again.....

At this rate, the Dems will be out of power by the next election and Obama will be a one termer.

WHY DOES OBAMA THINK THAT HIS ELECTION GAVE HIM A MANDATE --- TO SPEND OUR TAXPAYER MONEY AS FOOLISHLY AS HE WISHES TO?

>   ELIMINATE THE "PORK" AND "EARMARKS" FROM OBAMA'S SIMULUS BILL --- THEN PASS IT!

OBAMA NEEDS TO GET OFF HIS HORSE "ARROGANCE" --- AND START WORKING FOR THE PEOPLE.
America - A T T E N T I O N, we must be prepared to mobilize.

Republicans are proving to be our enemy, not representatives of our government,

It appears they shall be force to abide by our constitution and dissolved their bias and evil ways.

If republicans in our government won’t help save our country – then we must help President Obama in every way, at any and all cost.

We await your Order Sir!!

Thank you and GOD BLESS AMERICA

Mycroft, Chicago, Illinois - do you happen to have a copy of their Stimulus proposal?

If so give me the link I would like to read it.

If not STFU.

Thank you and GOD BLESS AMERICA
All Democrats, including the solider are a bunch of weak non-motivated hand out artist, following the DO AS I SAY NOT AS I DO policy insituted by their master...the Obamainator.

Fight, fight army of willing socialist to turn this country over to the government and it's leaders.

Taxpayers revolt and say "NO"!

CHARGE!!!!!!!!!!!!

Obama's mandate -- was not to spend our money foolishly ! (Sent Friday, February 06, 2009 4:01 PM)

I agree that we must get the bill passed for the people. As for a high horse Mr. Bush seemed to have one of those and look what it got him. I believe if a high horse does exist for President Obama he'll fall off once and learn from it. He'll cut that horse down to size in a New York second.

Now, just what is in the bill YOU consider pork? I have my ideas and have expressed them not just on blogs but to my reps. For example the Hollywood provision, and while I enjoy the arts this is no stimulus to give money for the National Endowment for the Arts. However cutting food stamps is stupid. Where are those people going to get food? They don't have jobs and therefore no money. Are they supposed to sell their first born to some slave owner just so the rest of the family can eat? Typical Republican philosophy. They have no concept at all of what it is like to be poor or temporarilly unable to pay for things due to no fault of their own but because of some high powered muckety mucks in Washington that are looking out for their own interests and those of their rich friends. The GOP will pay dearly for their obstruction. The real pork is obvious when one ACTUALLY READS the bill. Whack it out and pass it. How hard can it be unless one is planning on grandstanding for the folks back home?

Obstruction of the people's will is much of what cost the GOP in 2008 and if they continue it will cost more each subsequent election until they learn or they are no more.

Govern from the center and cut out the tricle down failed economic policies and the GOP will survive. Continue what they have been doing and perish they will.
Mycroft, Chicago, Illinois - do you have their stimulus proposal so we can look at it?

Just give us the link and we can read it ourselves.

If not then - STFU

Thank you and GOD BLESS AMERICA
@Obama's Mandate: Its surprising, after so many house calls, so many 1:1 with Repub senators, within 3 weeks of his taking office, extending hands to clenched fists, you call that arrogance, having experienced 8 years of Bush?
REPUBLICANS WE WILL NOT STAND FOR YOUR EVIL DOINGS ANYMORE BECAUSE THE AMERICAN PEOPLE HAVE THE POWER TO VOTE YOU OUT OF OFFICE IF YOU DO NOTHING FOR THEM, SO GO AHEAD AND KEEP ON OPPOSING EVERYTHING THAT MAKES SENSE TO HELP PEOPLE, THE MORE YOU OPPOSE THE FASTER YOUR TERM WILL END INN THE SENATE AND THE HOUSE, SO PLEASE OPPOSE OPPOSE OPPOSE! THAT WAY WE CAN GET MORE DEMOCRATS INTO POWER, AND TO THOSE THAT SUPPORT THE GOP WONT YOU JUST LOVE IT WHEN THE GOP IN YOUR AREA IS VOTED OUT AND A DEMOCRAT IS IN POWER!!!HA HA HA THE REPUBLICANS THE GIFT THAT KEEPS GIVING TO DEMOCRATS LIKE MYSELF
