About those secret prisons

The Department of Defense’s involvement in the CIA’s “ghost” detention program is certain, according to three human rights groups -- Amnesty International USA, the Center for Constitutional Rights and the Center for Human Rights and Global Justice.

They released documents today from the U.S. Department of Defense and U.S. Department of State that, they said, prove the existence of secret prisons at Bagram and in Iraq as well as the Department of Defense cooperation with the CIA ghost detention program. They also said the documents show one case where the Defense sought to delay the release of Guantanamo prisoners.

“JS 43,” a Defense Joint Chief of Staff document, is a report by the International Committee of the Red Cross that contains information about the secret detention facility at the Bagram Air Force Base. Most of the useful information, however, is redacted.

Another document, entitled “JS 986,” affirms that Defense prohibited the Red Cross from visiting the facilities. The document shows that the Defense failed to notify them of the existence of detainees, an action which the Defense, the groups said, recognized to be illegal.

Additionally, Defense did not register detainees with the Red Cross until they had been in custody for up to 14 days and sought authorization to hold some of these individuals for up to 30 days, which documents JS 1026 and 1048 reveal, the groups charged.

But perhaps most notably is an internal e-mail from Feb. 17, 2006, relating to Guantanamo detainees scheduled for release. It recommends to “hold off on return flights for 45 days or so until things die down. Otherwise we are likely to have heroes welcomes awaiting the detainees when they arrive.”

The e-mail also recommends using a smaller, more discrete plane to transport the detainees.

“It is astonishing that the government may have delayed releasing men from Guantánamo in order to avoid bad press,” said Center for Constitutional Rights attorney Gitanjali Gutierrez, who represents many of the men held in Guantánamo and has made 30 trips to the base since 2004. “Proposing to hold men for a month and a half after they were deemed releasable is inexcusable. The Obama administration should avoid repeating this injustice and release the innocent individuals with all due haste.”

This is the first time the Defense Department has provided any documents in response to the 2007 lawsuit based on Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests dating back to 2004, the groups said.

Through their lawsuit, the human rights groups seek the disclosure of government documents that relate to secret detention, extraordinary rendition and torture, they said.

Here are some of the documents, per Ambinder: 1., 2., 3., 4., 5., 6., 7., 8

OK, Obama.  Looks like the ball's in your court now.  Do the right thing here, or it may be done for you (neither Congress or the UN need your permission to begin investigations).

Prosecute Bush/Cheney Now!

Don't forget Area 51 either. Lots of stuff going on there we don't know about.
Amnesty International has never lied to us before. Why are they starting to now?
In other news, Poland has joined the ranks of countries accusing Pakistan of inaction, if not outright complicity in terrorist activity, following the beheading last week of a Polish national by the Pakistani Taliban.

So while AI is worried about whether the US is putting the right kind of candies on the terrorists pillows at Gitmo at night, life goes on (or not) for the terrorists remaining at large in the world.
Why are we so AFRAID to open this can of worms ???
We must be hiding some seriously bad stuff about ourselves for there to be so much footdragging by the politicians and the PRESS on actually demanding investigations of this stuff. Perhaps it all relates to the unproven fact that 9/11 WAS AN INSIDE JOB perpetrated by Jeb Bush, Mayo Shattuck III, Cheney, Rumsfeld, Hayden, and Tenet. It is GUILTY DEMEANOR to oppose these investigations.
They going back into the Clinton years too? Don't kid yourselves either. There will come a time when they capture someone high ranking enough in AQ and won't risk his capture being leaked before they can question him.
National healthcare is not the Antichrist. We're the only industrialized nation that provides virtually nothing for its citizens.

We might be the only country in the world that provides OPPORTUNITY for everything. It's not up to the government to provide us everything we need.

Oh, gosh. Wrong answer Chuck. Now you're in for it. You do know where you're at, right?
Well now that the American public knows, what the world already knew, then our safety is in jeopardy.

I repete, someone is going to jail....what a disgrace for this nation. Makes you real leary about going to sleep at night doesn't it.
Let's say all people in this country are broke. Nobody's rich, poor or anywhere in between.

Then Obama gives everyone 1 million dollars ... no more, no less.

In less than a year some people would be broke because it's their nature to spend, spend, spend.

Other's would invest a part of it and eventually, down the line, be worth millions and millions.

Most would probably be smart enough to find a bank or money market that would pay 4 to 5 percent. That would be 40 to 50 thousand bucks a year for "each" adult and the million is still intact.

My point is that everything seeks it's own level and that's why Obama's "stimulus" will not work.

So we had every adult starting out even and we wind up with a society of rich, upper and lower middle class, and those who would wind up at the poverty level or even living out of garbage cans.

You could say some might have had hard luck or extreme health problems but take that factor out of play and you still have the same damn thing.

People are gonna do what they want, and, fortunately, NOT what the government wants them to do. Government cannot keep people in their place and Pelosi and Obama will one day choke on that.

Perhaps, we, his supporters, need to "encourage" our President to do the right thing here and investigate (and punish) those responsible. He wants to hear from us? So be it! Bush, Cheney and Rumsfled need to be behind bars.
How can we as a nation spawn those who think human rights and the rule of law can be ignored for some and ultimately not all.
GO JADE!!!!
Is Jim Garrison still alive? Maybe he can prove Clay Shaw had something to do with Gitmo, too? Someone get Oliver Stone on the phone!
Nixon..."I am not a crook!"
Rove..."I am not a crook!"
Rumsfeld..."I am not a crook!"
Cheney..."I am not a crook!"
Dubya..."You obviously have not read my version of the Constitution!"
Torture has to be one of the very worst stains on America since slavery (same thing.) Those that are responsible for breaking our laws and international treaties must be held accountable.  They must be investigated, prosecuted and if found guilty, punished.  (I would say the punishment should be the same treatment they authorized against others, but that would be bringing myself down to their level... a place I reject.)
Perhaps more will come out that will finally force someone's hand to get trials going for Rumsfeld, Cheney, Bush, Ashcroft, Rice, Powell and possibly a few others.

Monkberry Moon,,,,,question. If those who are so smart as to invest do so in companies who spend, spend, spend how are they going to make money. The problem we have is that the economy has stopped. That means people aren't spending. They can't get loans to spend. Like it or not Capitalism depends on people spending. That is how companies make money. They make it by selling something. So we need to infuse the economy with money to lend so people can buy houses, cars, big ticket appliances, and so small and medium sized businesses who don't sell stock can get cash to operate. They need to buy inventory to sell so they can make money. Being such an expert in economics (in your own mind) one would think you would understand how it works. If you invest in my company and I invest in your company but neither of us sells anything how are we going to make any money. That would assume everyone invests their money as you propose.
Justice needs to be served, and enforced here big time! President Obama needs to thoroughly investigate this matter very quickly. It is difficult for our nation to move forward. If justice is allowed to fall backwards. Time to move forward America!
How can we as a nation spawn those who think human rights and the rule of law can be ignored for some and ultimately not all.

I don't know but I wish the democrat party would purge itself of the extreme leftist so there would be a viable option when the Republicans need slapping down.
Prosecute ALL the complicit criminals and ALL the active criminals.  And there will be too many democants in jail.  Obama was on the on panel for Afghanastan himself.  I He prosecutes everyone who did wrong, and everyone who knew wrong happened for a fact and did nothing.  DC will be REAL QUIET REAL FAST.  And in fact if he tries to selectively prosecute a few choice people with (R) next to their names, what will he do if they name names?  You will see there CAN BE NO PROSECUTION.  Obama can't risk it, and we all know it at the end of the day.
In each of the major wars we've fought there have been prisoners, and we had prisoner of war camp where they were kept till the war was over.  That's how it's done.  In the past when we've dealt with "combatants" that don't wear uniforms they were shot as spies or saboteurs.  A Hague Convention finding back in the 80's stated that terrorist were not soldiers, that they were like pirates, fair game for the military of any nation.  The people in question are not US citizens, any crimes or acts of violence they committed were outside the united states, and when they were captured it was also outside of the United States.  Under the RULE OF LAW some people are crying about, they have no place in the our prisons or our courts.

I'm curious, is Amnesty International, and the UN seeking to stop killing by Hesbola, and other terrorist groups, or is the US their only focus?
These 3 organizations and the American Civil Liberties Union are more concerned about the rights of our enemies than American citizens. They have and are always giving aid and comfort to the enemy. That is called treason. Aren't we at war now with our enemies? Why do they have a legitimate voice? The terrorists have been released and most are back with Al Qaeda training for more attacks against Americans. We need CIA prisons and effective persuasion tactics.
Does it not occur to any of you who are so hell bent on extending "human rights" to these people, that perhaps there is a reason that President Obama is not acting on this?  Just maybe he gets information that we don't see everyday that has convinced him to maintain many of Bush's policies in regards to national security.  At some point, we need to drop the Bush hating and consider the fact that Bush did and Obama is doing what's in the best interest of the country...and ignoring all the chatter about "war crimes investigations" and "full disclosure".

Grow up people...there are people out there that want to see us dead...and they won't hesitate for a second to violate our "human rights".
Ask yourself this...would you rather have the terrorists on American soil, roaming free to plot against innocent civilians (becuase they always go after military targets, right?), or on an island at a US Navy Base?  I'm not saying the treatment there was ethical nor even legal, but I'd be very afraid to have them, reformed or not, living side by side with the rest of Americans.
Nice.  Reveal all our military secrets to the world.  Decrease our military.  Show how weak we are.  The terrorists laugh at us and there's another attack far worse than 9/11.

And Obama says,"I don't blame you. I am ashamed of my country. Please don't do it again"
The follow up is up to us, the citizens of the country. Keep the issues in the courts, keep your congressional delegation focused on the issue and keep the issue in the presee - all forms. As more "stuff" becomes public, the administration will have to act.

A note: Obama seems to be following the Lincoln position toward those who had challenged the constitution. Forgive. But now as then, there are many of us who don't support that position.
