10,000+ troops to Afghanistan

Posted: Tuesday, February 17, 2009 2:50 PM by Domenico Montanaro
Filed Under: ,

From NBC’s Jim Miklaszewski and Courtney Kube
The White House is expected to announce the deployment of more than 10,000 additional U.S. forces to Afghanistan "within the hour," according to Pentagon officials. The Pentagon will follow with details on numbers and identification of troops to be deployed.

The troop deployment to Afghanistan will be announced as a "remissioning," meaning many, if not most, of the forces were already scheduled to deploy to Iraq but will now be diverted to Afghanistan.

That will reportedly include two Marine combat battalions and one Army combat brigade. According to one Pentagon official, because this "remissioning" will, in fact, redirect troops from Iraq to Afghanistan, it will be politically characterized as a "drawdown" of U.S. military forces in Iraq, permitting the White House to claim in this one announcement that President Obama is making good on two campaign promises -- withdrawing forces from Iraq and sending additional forces to Afghanistan.

If he hasn't already, Defense Secretary Gates is expected to sign the deployment order today to send the more than 10,000 U.S. Marines and soldiers to Afghanistan in the spring.

*** UPDATE *** According to senior Pentagon and military officials, President Obama today authorized the deployment of 17,000 additional forces to Afghanistan. Defense Secretary Gates, however, either has or will sign the actual deployment order for 12,000 forces, 8,000 Marines and 4,000 soldiers for Aghanistan.

The deployment order for the additional 4,000, most support personnel, will be signed at a later date when those individual units and troops are identified. The 17,000 number was in one of the earlier orders that was sent up chain of command then back down again a couple weeks ago.

Here's a chance for the remaining chickenhawks like lush limpjaw who haven't had a chance to fight and die war to suit up and go fight...the nation is waiting..waiting...waiting...
Very interested to see if this is in the budget or whether it will be a supplemental bill.  I did read one op-ed in the WP today that stated if Al-Queda is designated as a civilian but criminal organization then President Obama is already guilty of war crimes because of the "civilians" targeted and killed in the last week.
Finally we are going after those who ACTUALLY attacked us on 9/11 instead of some two bit dictator that was no real threat to us.
Does it matter to liberals if the body bags come back to the US from Iraq or from Afghanistan?
Woo. My President! Let's go get it done! Knock some Afghanie heads around and make the world a safer place. What ever it takes to get it done, lets do it!

I knew we voted for the right guy. This Obama is going to make Bush look like a dove!
Hillary take on any sniper fire while in Japan?

The politicians, Clinton, Gore, Gramm, Bush, McConJob and the Boner ended effective regulation or the banks
Merge and cmombine as much as you want, jack up interest rates, create 'junk mortgages', eliminate truth in lending

THAT'S THE PROBELM
De-REGULATION
The old conservative mantra

Notice that your pets are dying and your children are getting sick ?

Finally we are going after those who ACTUALLY attacked us on 9/11 instead of some two bit dictator that was no real threat to us.

Ever think that maybe they've moved around since then?
Or do you think they've been waiting for us there all this time?
Thank you Obama for bringing our troops home!!!

How is Obama paying for this needless war?
Can you say 'BOMB SHELL' ???

'...SPRINGFIELD, Ill. — U.S. Sen. Roland Burris has acknowledged trying to raise money for ousted Gov. Rod Blagojevich before being appointed to the Senate.

According to a transcript posted on the Chicago Tribune's Web site, Burris told reporters Monday night in Peoria that after the ex-governor's brother called him, he talked to some friends about putting together a fundraiser.

Burris says he told Rob Blagojevich shortly after the November election that he couldn't get anyone to contribute.

Burris testified to a committee that recommended impeaching the governor that he had told only one Blagojevich associate he was interested in being senator and never offered anything in return.

But he released an affidavit over the weekend indicating he had spoken to four others, and that he was asked for fundraising help...'

It's hard to see how he could hold on to his deat

No Justin Long...It does matter.  We are stuck in Iraq now and I agree with that, but the body bags coming home are going to "hurt just as bad" to the family who lost their child in Iraq or Afghanistan.  With a step-son in Northern Iraq right now, and his wife somewhere in Afghanistan, your sarcasm is not lost on me.  Just sign me a Liberal who does believe in our Military but feels the War in Iraq was more about Oil, than WMD.

We were kind of hoping that known Hawk Barack H. Obama would put the uniform on and lead our troops into battle. I know Barack has to learn how to salute yet, but that shouldn't take more then another month or so for a smart guy like him to master. We'll put Barack on top of the lead tank, kind of like Patton.
i thought he would bring troops home ASAP and in turn save us billions and trillions of dollars to be spent here at home.spin it like you stole it!

I'm a progressive and I hate to see body bags coming home from anywhere in the world, but there is some unfinished business with Al Queda and the Taliban.  9/11 is about Bin Ladin and it is time to put an end to his influence.

To Alan, NJ: This is not a budget issue, it is a "doing the right thing" issue. President Obams will fight (and kill) our enemies and extend the hand of peace to those who wish no harm to Americans.

We are returning to acting like Americans.  Wonder what John Boehner and the House republicans think about this.

The Liberals won't be happy until we have Meter Maids issuing tickets to terrorists on the battle field. They'll drive around in those little golf carts writing up the tickets with 'Orders to Appear in Terrorist Court'. Fines for terrorism will be between $50-$300.
The whole problem with Afghanistan is that there is no Afghanistan.  There's just a bunch of tribes living in a place on the map collectively referred to as Afghanistan.  As we saw in Iraq, tribal leaders are the key to making anything happen -- good or bad.  I understand our collective need for getting Bin Laden and his sidekick Al -- but how many more lives and dollars do we throw at salving our psyche and national pride?

No foreign/occupying power has EVER succeeded in the long term in Afghanistan --- EVER!  And we will surely follow suit.  And it won't be the military's fault, it will be the fault of those who don't understand history.

On the other hand, this recent move in Pakistan to cede territory to the Taliban is pretty interesting. It would be nice to get all these murderous thugs in the same target area where one nuke could blow them all away!
It is where the troops should have gone in the first place.  I hope that the troops can do some good in training the Afghan forces (police and soldiers).  The question about this move; is this too little too late especially given what is going on in Pakistan?

It didn't/doesn't seem to matter to the conservatives as they're defending the IRAQ war and chanting "USA, USA, USA".

Wow. Gonna deploy 10,000 troops within the hour. That's a pretty fast deployment.

Thanks for making that clear. By the way I served in Nam. Just because I opposed one war doesn't mean I oppose all wars. I did my duty in an unpopular war and fortunately came home in one piece. In the current situation. There are people in regions of Afghanistan/Pakistan that actually did harm to our country and our people. Instead of going after them we went after a two bit dictator whose ragime was in the first stages of crumbling but who made an idle threat against Dubya's daddy and who was sitting on the 2nd largest pool of oil on the planet. That was wrong. I gave Bush benefit of the doubt when he was first elected but when he took us to war in Iraq that ended any trust I had in him.
We are returning to acting like Americans.  Wonder what John Boehner and the House republicans think about this.

Ron Indiana

I for one am looking forward to Harry Reid again standing on the Senate floor, as he did for Iraq,  telling the world "We lost the war."
OMG, AM I READING THIS RIGHT, OR JUST HALUCINATING?  Are all of you pro-Bushies who were so for going into and keeping us in Iraq actually CRITICIZING Obama for sending troops into Afghanistan?  I mean WTF!  I'm usually ok with you criticizing Obama for just about everything else, as you're going to anyway.  But this smacks of hypocrisy of the worse kind.  BUSH sends our troops to the wrong war, in the wrong reason, chasing the wrong man for no good reason and it's a GOOD thing because "he's keeping us safe".  OBAMA sends troops to find the man who ACTUALLY ATTACKED us on 9/11 and it's a bad thing because...?

WHERE ARE ALL OF THE CHANTS OF "USA, USA, USA" NOW?!

Now there's a good idea. Setting off nuclear weapons in Pakistan. What could go wrong with that?
Reminds me of a song ~ It must have been the right war, but it must have been the wrong time.

To Pete from Salinas and others, a question:  Were you calling Afghanistan Barack Obama's war in 2001 or 2002?  No?  Why not?  Because he didn't start it, that's why.  The timing may be awful but he didn't choose it.

If McCain had been elected, I'm willing to bet you wouldn't be criticizing HIM for putting more troops in Afghanistan -- that is, if he even knows where it is or who lives there.  Is it Taliban?  Is it Al Qaeda?  Is it tribal warlords?  Let's ask McCain and see if he knows, any better than Bush knew the difference between Sunni and Shia in the weeks before he gave the order to invade Iraq.

Republican critics should be more mindful of where we've been before you criticize where we're going.  At least President Obama reads the intelligence briefings and has the courage to do what George Bush and all the other republican chickenhawks should have done.
Wasn't questioning the morality Ron, Indiana, just wondering if this administration will continue the duplicity of the last one by hiding the cost of the war.  Understand that we have to borrow for this one as well, and I don't see legions of allies coming over the hill to help.  OSB's objective was to destroy the US economically, how do you think he's doing?
S.B. Stein E.B. NJ - It is where the troops should have gone in the first place. - S.B. Stein E.B. NJ

They DID go there in the first place. You knew that though, right? Right?
Another broken promise from Obama.  He promised to bring the troops home.  What a LIAR and WARMONGER.

I hope you are joking.....Please say you are.  If not you might want to not post you thoughts to the public.  Obama has only been in for 28 days.... you act as if he is taking over a balanced budget...lol... like W.
listen people, our country is still in denial about this war, and bush told us every year that we had a sound economy-for 8 years. and the people that voted for him twice believed every thing he said.americans need to do their history class over, you cannot go to war and and stay in war for 8 eight years and believe- our economy is sound?? the troops have been being screwed over, being told they have to extend their service, they've been electricuted, and come home and commit suicide.this war was a scam from the beginning, wake up america, every country is always at the threat of another country, terrorist are always a threat to every country, will be now and 30 years from now.religion is a scam all across the board. humans have no business being on this planet!!

You and the rest of your NON-SERVING liberal friends piss me off with all of your anti-war BS. I have lost several friends and many soldiers in IRAQ and AFGHANISTAN. While you were back here like a little wussy typing on the computer screen; we were in the thick of things. You have no frikken idea of war is. Probably most of the idiots in here have no idea. I served for 24 yrs under both parties in the whitehouse. I received 2 Purple Hearts, 3 Bronze Stars and many more accolades so that MF like you can sit back here and complain about what is going on 6000 miles away. While you and all of your Liberal friends are back here bashing the military (that is what it is when you bash our leader), we still continue on. you may as well spit in our faces too. (probably get the she-i-t beat out of you today) if you choose that route. Show some damn respect for people who have laid their lives down for this country; THAT IS THE ULTIMATE SACRIFICE< Not your keyboard sticking................

Oh get off it now your blaming obama for the two wars we're in...this is STUPID SOME OF YOU PEOPLE ARE JUST PLAIN STUPID!!!!He inherited these wars now you want to write dumb stuff like today its his war!?What knid of lame brained thinking is that all republicans cant be this damned brain washed
"Meet the new boss, same as the old boss."
What is unclear about stopping the damm wars in the middle east and bringing the troops home? We have nothing to gain. All they have is opium and that is not good for people. Why do we always have to be killing someone? Truely Darwin was correct in postulating that we evolved from lower animals.
From one bad war to another.  This time America is going to be different...not like the British, the Soviets or any of the other people who got involved in drawn out, guerilla wars in Afghanistan!!! MISSION ACCOMPLISHED.
I agree with sending more troops to finish the job.

Its a shame that Obama had to lie about it to get elected.

I hope that he wont be "transparent" in the deployment of our troops.  Surprise is one of the strongest weapons available.

Attack Obama Attack - Obama the Hawk - Who would have thought?
