First thoughts: Obama's war?

*** Obama’s war? USA Today’s front page must have been quite the eye-opener for President Obama this morning, since it's the one paper he most likely read while on the road in Phoenix to deliver his home foreclosure plan. The headline: "Obama's War." Despite no presidential verbal statement about the troop increase to Afghanistan and despite the fact the president is here in Phoenix today to talk housing, it's the issue of Afghanistan that dominates America's hotel paper of record. After all, the addition of 17,000 troops by the summer is a 50% increase in the U.S. commitment. This headline is another reminder to an Obama team that may be thinking about the following question: How many times during this presidency will Afghanistan step on planned policy and political rollouts (like today's home foreclosure plan)? What’s more, the announcement of the 50% troop increase came without any presidential explanation or new policy announcement. And that's got some anti-war advocates very upset. But remember, Obama's rhetoric on Afghanistan was always as a response to Iraq questions. It was always the "right" war vs. Iraq as the "wrong" war.

Video: The Obama administration's "remissioning" of more than 10,000 troops to Afghanistan could be the first of several deployments.

*** Obama’s home loan: As we mentioned above, President Obama unveils his plan to address home foreclosures at an event in Phoenix at 12:15 pm ET. According to sources, the main goal of the plan is simple: prevent avoidable foreclosures by first helping homeowners who owe more than their house is now worth, and who currently can’t refinance. The Obama plan will allow homeowners to either refinance at a lower interest rate or extend the life of their loan. The government will subsidize mortgage companies who work with these so-called underwater homeowners. But if private lenders won’t help, the Obama plan would turn to government-sponsored mortgage giants Fannie Mae or Freddie Mac. The plan also tries to help homeowners who have mortgages too large for their income. The initial cost of this plan: a little more than $50 billion, taken from the second $350 billion in TARP funds. Unlike last week's bank bailout -- or even the various explanations for the just-passed stimulus plan -- housing is a much easier issue for the public to grasp. And unlike the bank bailout, the administration is using its best spokesman to unveil the plan: Obama. Some questions include: Will $50 billion be enough? How are good borrowers rewarded in this system? And can the government get in the game of re-valuing properties?

Video: The president is expected to unveil a plan today that could help homeowners.

*** The ideas race: With the stimulus now signed into law, here’s our question of the day: When will the GOP begin being an idea factory the way they've become an opposition factory? (This morning alone, the RNC has blasted out five newspaper clips that raise questions about Obama and his administration.) During the fight over the stimulus, we heard Republicans champion more tax cuts, fiscal discipline, and a laissez-faire economic philosophy. The problem: Those ideas aren’t necessarily new, and the Bush years in particular damaged the GOP brand on fiscal discipline. So what are the Republicans’ ideas moving forwards? Ironically, since becoming RNC chair, Michael Steele has scrapped a fledgling in-house think tank, the Center for Republican Renewal, that ex-chair Mike Duncan had established. The Republicans are doing a great job on the political war front, but they are going to have to offer up counter-proposals that are hyped up in the same way the party hypes up Obama missteps.

*** Dead pol walking? Meanwhile, it now seems like Roland Burris’ decision whether or not he'll run in 2010 has become the least of his worries. The Senate Ethics Committee has opened a preliminary investigation into Burris’ changing stories about his contacts and conversations with Blagojevich associates, and a downstate Illinois prosecutor is investigating whether the U.S. senator committed perjury. What’s more, Burris’ hometown paper -- the Chicago Tribune -- is now calling for resignation (“There's only one honorable action for Burris: resign”). As is the Washington Post (“The people of Illinois have suffered enough. Mr. Burris should resign”). Harry Reid has to be muttering, "I told you so.” Who will be the first senator to threaten expulsion?

Video: Burris is being asked to step down after admitting to fundraising efforts for Blagojevich.

*** Paging Tom Kean and Lee Hamilton: Here's an idea that will catch like WILDFIRE with members of Congress. JP Morgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon is calling for a 9/11-style commission to investigate Wall Street and the financial mess. Now here's a fun game this morning: Try and come up with a competent list of panelists who don't have potential conflicts of interest?

*** What happened to that fastest transition in history? Here's also a story the GOP might jump on today: the lack of staff at various administration departments to implement the stimulus bill. "The once efficient Obama transition has ground to a near standstill after tax problems bedeviled several of his nominees, leaving the top echelon of his government largely unassembled. Three cabinet jobs remain unfilled, only 2 of the 15 cabinet departments have deputy secretaries confirmed, and the vast majority of lower-level political jobs remain vacant."

*** Sarah smile?
It isn’t easy running for president after being your party’s defeated VP nominee. (See: John Edwards and Joe Lieberman.) And, for Sarah Palin, it doesn’t become any easier when you find that your day job in Alaska isn’t the same as it was before you became your party’s running mate. Under the headline, “Back Home in Alaska, Palin Finds Cold Comfort,” today’s Washington Post writes: “A number of factors seem to have contributed to the bumpy homecoming: a residual anger among Democrats for the attack-dog role Palin assumed in the McCain campaign, lingering resentment from Republicans for the part she may have played in McCain's defeat, and a suspicion crossing party lines that the concerns of Alaska, at a time of economic crisis, will now be secondary to her future in national politics. Nearly every move that Palin makes or does not make, acknowledges Joe Balash, one of her closest aides, is analyzed through a new political prism, scrutinized for its effect on a possible 2012 presidential candidacy. ‘There's nothing we can do to stop it,’ he said. ‘People wonder why she's doing something or not doing something.’”

*** The NHL has some work to do with the First Fan: And speaking of America’s most famous hockey mom, did anyone else catch Obama’s revelation to the CBC that he’s never attended a hockey game? He never attended a Blackhawks game?

Stuck On Stupid.

How disingenuous exactly is the media in this country? I see crawlers across my tv saying “Obama carrying out same Bush policies”. What do they want? President Obama always spoke of keeping the fight in Afghanistan and NOT in Iraq. He was the only candidate at the time talking about going after Osama Bin Laden. How is it that all of a sudden his policies are the same as President Bush’s policies? If anything, President Bush acted on Barack Obama’s policies when it came to Afghanistan.

We have soldiers about to be deployed to Afghanistan. Some of them are in their early 20’s, which means they were children when September 11th happened. Millions have either been killed or displaced in Iraq. And yet Osama Bin Laden is still free.

I am so tired of the Republicans on tv questioning Barack Obama’s policies as if he was some sort of war monger. Have they forgotten what happened in NY and Washington and PA? Have they forgotten who carried this out?

Look at the so-called economists they have on as guests. They’re not credible, but continue to show up on tv day in, day out, as if they actually know something. They don’t.

And while I realize it’s popular to attack President Obama on every front, please let’s keep this is mind. President Obama did not create these problems. He is just attempting to undo them. And he is working very hard to accomplish this, something President Bush failed to do. These jacka$$es on tv should either join the military or shut up. Or better yet. Get a real job. Where using their brains is required.

Because right now they’re hurting this country, not helping it. Very very stupid people. And they are all over the place. They’re now in Rush Limbaugh territory. Just like the jacka$$es in the GOP up on the Hill.

I’m a Democrat who supported Barack Obama because he got it right on Iraq. And he got it right on Afghanistan. And he should go after Osama Bin Laden and al-Qaeda. And this is a Bush policy? No it isn’t. Why is this so difficult to understand?
I sure hope you anti-war-liberals are happy with your president today. For a guy that spent much of his campaign telling us that he'd bring the troops home, then he turns around and INCREASES the troops in Afghanistan by 50% with no explanation. You anti-war libs must be really pleased with your vote.
If we sit back and allow the Taliban to take over Afghanistan AND Pakistan, what would we have really accomplished over the past 6 years?

It is unfortunate that the Bush Administrations misadventure in Iraq has left us very close to where we started in Afghanistan, but ignoring the problem will not make it go away.

I applaud President Obama for putting our nation's security ahead of "political concerns". Nobody wants to go to war, but the difference is Afganistan and Pakistan represent a "clear and present danger" to our country. They cannot be allowed to become a safe haven for terrorists again.

While we can debate tactics, there is no doubt that something must be done. Of course, the answer does not lie solely in troops. I am confident the President will do everything in his power, militarily, economically, and diplomatically.
It's incredible how much 2012 buzz there already is. Besides that Palin story, Gov. Huntsman of Utah and Charlie Crist of Florida are both raising eyebrows for their willingness to alienate conservatives even though they're both clearly gunning for a national run at some point soon: http://campaigndiaries.com/2009/02/18/2012-huntsman-and-crist/
So Obama's plan to fix the mortgage mess is to continue the policies that led to the mortgage mess? We already know that the people that got in loan trouble had too few assets to buy too much house. Now Obama is going to subsidize those people with lower rates and longer loan terms? What sense does that make? Not much of a downside for those people is there? Now people can buy houses they know they can't afford because they know the government will bail them out when they get in trouble.
Sgt. Joe,

You clearly were not following the campaign very closely. Obama had always said he would increase troops in Iraq, so this is certainly not a surprise to anyone.
How about the automakers? No story on them? The Big 3 showed up in DC for more billions in bailouts. And the automakers plan is to take the billions and lay off tens of thousands of employees. I like that idea. Now the taxpayers are paying the automakers to cut the very jobs Obama said he's trying to save. My guess is they get the bailout money with no questions asked.
It's only a matter of time before consertatives revert to their loathing of 'nation building.' They will find a way to oppose Obama on this.

It takes no skill or creativity whatsoever to hurl criticisms at Pres. Obama.  He's got huge problems he's tyring to deal with and he is a large and easy-to-hit target.  It is amazing to me that the GOP still just doesn't get it.  Their lame and disproven economic principles are, along with other factors, what got us into this mess.  It seems to me that their number one goal now is positioning themselves to be able to say "I told you so" if the economy doesn't turn a corner for the good.  Business as usual.

And the far left needs to back off as well.  This is not "payback time."  It is not a time to load up the Christmas wish list and then whine when those lists are not met.  The economy is on the operating table and we need to stabilize and fix the patient.

We shall see if the GOP and the left can relegate their parochial needs to the back burner and focus on what the country needs.  There is no doubt in my mind that this is what Pres. Obama is tyring to do.......
Now that's funny First Read, the repugnant ones as an idea factory?  Yeah bad ideas but they are too arrogant and ignorant to have any new ideas.  They are Irrelevant Elephants who will become Extinct Elephants because they can't think outside their same old song and dance that has been repudiated by history.  We can see that steele, the closet Democrat, isn't even smart enough to have a think tank to come up with something other than the same old sorry song and dance.  The preugnant ones are just a party of sore losers with their heads stuck in the past and somewhere where the sun doesn't shine!

Um First Read shouldn't you include that the repugnant ones have been slowing down the process of getting Obama's nominees confirmed?  Let's not forget the guilt of the Dopes of Nope!

Irrelevant Elephants will become Extinct Elephants!
I’m a Democrat who supported Barack Obama because he got it right on Iraq. And he got it right on Afghanistan. And he should go after Osama Bin Laden and al-Qaeda. And this is a Bush policy? No it isn’t. Why is this so difficult to understand?

Pat, Boston, MA

1) Many of al-Qaeda were killed or captured in Iraq. So many that al-Qaeda is just a shell organization now. Mission Accomplished.

2) What makes you think Osama Bin Laden is anywhere near Afghanistan? He could be anywhere. South-east Asia, Indonesia. Anywhere. You think he's just been sitting their in Afghanistan waiting for us to come get him?

3) Obama sent troops into Afghanistan without so much of an indication to what the missions goals are. None. He hasn't said a word why he did it.
how quick they want to unload all of the Bush follies on Pres. Obama.  Obama came into office with a country Bancrupt and bled dry by Bush and Cheney and all the rest of their Greedy Billionaire friends. it will be a mircle if Pres. Obama can save this country.
Pretty funny to see the Obama-lovers flip-flopping on their anti-war rants.  All of a sudden it's perfectly OK that Obama has become a warmonger.  Even after he lied about wanting to bring the troops home.
From MoveOn.Org:

'...MoveOn members made a big difference in Washington last week—asking pointed questions of top bank CEOs and successfully pushing to limit executive pay.1 But these Wall Street bankers fundamentally damaged our economy—and there's a lot more work to do to clean up their mess.

The Obama administration has laid out a framework for fixing the banking system, but a lot of the important details remain unresolved. A number of prominent economists—including Paul Krugman2, Joseph Stiglitz3, Nouriel Roubini4, Dean Baker5, and Jeffrey Sachs6—have proposed plans, and they all share a fundamental principle: Wall Street shouldn't get any more giveaways at taxpayer expense.

With Congress home from Washington this week, we have a perfect opportunity to make this point clear. And the best way to do that is by flooding local papers with letters to the editor—which lawmakers monitor closely to understand what folks at home are thinking.
...'

Why should we give handouts to banks ?
Why reward irresponsible behavior by banks ?
Why reward greedy, crooked banks ?

Let them die
Anybody remember 'creative destruction' ?
People touting laissez-faire capitalism always mention that phrase

Time for 'creative destruction'
Banks took beig risks..... They failed
LET THEM DIE !!
America will survive with small, community banks

Call, write or email your Senators and your Representative

Why should we fund the life styles of the rich and greedy ??

What are the signs that the Republicans are doing a "great job" on the political war front? What victory have they achieved?

_______________________________________
Why does President Obama need to provide an "explanation for the increased troop levels in Afghanistan?

Osama Bin Laden is alive and well, the Taliban is retaking Kabul AND parts of nuclear armed Pakistan, and the current government of Afghanistan is basically powerless. What other reasons do we need?
_____________________________________
I keep hearing media types like Chris Matthews complaining that Secretary Geithner is not "charismatic enough".

This just in - what makes "good TV" is not necessarily the same as what makes "good government".

I'm not looking for Secretary Geithner to make me swoon, I need him to come up with a workable strategy to save our financial system.

Please stop attacking this man for superficial reasons and give him the opportunity to DO HIS JOB. This is not a made for TV movie folks, this is REAL LIFE. Everything doesn't have to be "sexy". We just need it to WORK.

Say it ain't so, Chuck (& Mark & Domenico):

If it weren't for shiny objects, you guys wouldn't have much to say, for sure.

Sgt. Joe Bob:

Obviously you never listened to his message.  He was clear and consistent that we would take the fight to Afghanistan and the Taliban.  That 'we' had taken our eye of Osama bin Laden with the Iraq distraction.  He said he would end the conflict in Iraq as soon as prudent and based on the general's intel from the ground.  But hopefully a draw down within 16 months.  I know I heard this at least a dozen times.  Keep hating though.  Your position and support have become much like your party, irrelevant.

Very graphic post today.  I loved your metaphor.  I may just have to ‘borrow’ it.  Touché.
Did you ever have to ask yourself . What if there was no bailouts? What if there were no financial recovery plans ?
To Pat in Boston:  If you don't like what's on TV, CHANGE THE CHANNEL.  That's one of the great things about this country.  Freedom of speech and, if you don't like it, freedom of choice.  Instead of berating others and trying to censor what they do, switch to another channel that suits you.
Conventional Wisdom (CW) is sometimes created and always amplified by the media.  For example, with the passage of the stimulus plan, it is now President Obama's economy. At first blush, that sounds reasonable... but is is not correct.  It may be more accurate to say that we all own the economy with some having more ownership than others.  Those showing responsible ownership are working to do something.  So wat about Rush Limbaugh, Eric Canter, John Boehner, most GOP Senators? No, they don't own the exonomy, they expect it to fail, they voted against the jobs bill. So how does the average American view this obstruction? We are for our leaders doing something, rather than doing nothing. President Obama is doing all he can to fix it and will continue to be supported by Americans for his efforts. So before the media makes a key stroke on the computer or fills the air with comments...THINK. Is what I'm communicating accurate or am I spreading false CW.  BTW, Chuck, This is not Obama's war. More on that later.

This brings me to my worst person in the world, Pat Buchanan.  On Hardball Pat railed about the stock market dropping and he attributed the drow to President Obama's economic plan.  He failed, yet failed to recognize that the auto companies report was dismal, seeking billions more dollars.  And tht is the primary reason the stock market dropped. The real question is, "How long will Phil Griffin keep this buffoon on MSNBC?
The Republicans are doing a great job on the political war front, but they are going to have to offer up counter-proposals that are hyped up in the same way the party hypes up Obama missteps.
-------------------------------------------------

Believe it or not, the public does not agree with the First Read's typical corporate media opinion that the Republicans are doing a "great job" in a political war that nobody but the media and the Repubs want to fight.

The polls all show that President Obama's public approval ratings remain very high, the Dems in congress get net positive ratings and the Repub Congress critters now have a NEGATIVE 17% net favorability rating.

As for Obama's unspecified "missteps," the use of such language is an indication which side the media is on in the Republicans' "war." The Repubs' side.
President Obama always said, for two straight years, that he would increase troops in Afghanistan.  Please people, pay attention or be quiet!
Anyone who didn't know we were going to step up our action in Afghanistan must have slept through 2008. Pres. Obama repeatedly promised to do this.
Here's an idea for you First Read.
Compile a list of dates that Obama made this promise. I bet you could find fifty times he talked about it. Of course, that would include actual research on your part. That's something you seem to have forgotten how to do. Try "the googles"
Obama will add troops to Afghanistan not because it is necessarily the right thing to do militarily but because he promised to do so a gazillion times in his campaign speeches. The Dems fell for Obama's ploy that Iraq was the wrong war but Afghanistan is the right war. How one could be fighting Al Qaida in Afghanistan and that's OK but fighting Al Qaida in Iraq but that is wrong is hard to understand from a logic standpoint but the left managed to twist itself into a pretzel to do so. Obama made this right/wrong analogy many times so he could look like a hawk on the war on terror and still undermine the effort in Irag to insure failure there and to seduce enough voters that would not normally have voted for him. Obama is going to go through the motions for a year or two in Afghanistan mostly continuing the Bush policies worked out with Pakistan. If success does not happen (unlikely within 2 or 10 years) he will negotiate a withdrawal and we will be back to Sept 10th, 2001. One thing is for sure: Obama will not stand firm (as Bush did) against public opinion if it becomes too antsy with the Afghan situation and poses a threat to his re-election. Guaranteed!

Geez you people make this so easy it's almost boring.

Obama personally stated in the beginning that Burris should not be seated.  Reid vowed to not seat anyone appointed by Blago.  The entire senate did everything but move heaven and earth to keep Burris out (you recall him being locked out of senate inauguration day).  The Illinois Sec. of State refused to sign necessary documents for him to be seated, and it was only after the state supreme court forced the issue that Burris was seated at all.  I realize that you hate Obama and would use any excuse to bash him, but at least bash him based on facts instead of the voices of Rush Limbaugh that speak to you in your head.

God Help Us - Obama Won't!

Oh, the libs have thrown down their protest signs and have become the warmongers they accused the Republicans of being for years now. They say Obama will "Withdraw from Iraq in 6 months, 8 months, 12 months", what ever. Then Obama increases troops in Afganistan with zero explanation, the libs go "That was the plan all along". Obama is just playing with his idiot liberal voting base.
Why should tax payers subsidize Banks ?
Why should we guarantee Wall Street investments ?

From MoveOn.org:

'...No more giveaways for Wall Street at taxpayers' expense. Any future plan needs to be implemented fairly for taxpayers. If banks made bad investments, then their shareholders need to face the consequences before any taxpayer money is put on the line.

Experts agree on the key principles. Prominent economists, including Paul Krugman, Joseph Stiglitz, Nouriel Roubini, Dean Baker, and Jeffrey Sachs, all agree that the government must get a fair bargain for any money it invests in the banks, even if that means temporarily taking over insolvent banks. Even conservative Republican Senator Lindsey Graham admitted this.7

If taxpayers' money is at risk, then taxpayers should get any potential profits. If taxpayers are going to risk their money to help, then we should get equity just like other stockholders.

We know all too well that Wall Street isn't going to police itself. The people who got us into this mess are looking out for themselves, so our elected representatives need to be looking out for us. They need to hear from us that we're counting on them and that we won't stand for any more freebies for Wall Street....'

DUMP THE CHUMPS !!

Let the greedy banks DIE !!!
It's getting a little difficult to take the Wash. Post's Palin's articles seriously.  Every single one of them is negative.  So two questions-why the obsession, and can you really not find anything positive to say about her leadership in Alaska?  It's a bit of a stretch to think there's not one thing she's done for the residents of her state.
NICE.  The very institutions that helped us get into this "mortgage crisis," Fannie and Freddie, will now be counted on to make more loans.

MORE OF THE SAME.  Where is the change????  I'm still "hoping."
President Obama is doing what is necessary to salvage the Afghan was that Dubya f*****up with the misadventure in Iraq. Afghanistan is clearly a difficult environment with a weak central government and very little infrastructure. It is also where the evil doers from 911 started out and near where they still are.

So I agree strongly with Pat fr Boston, that the chattering class is short sighted and thinking ratings first as usual. I am not sure they could get real job, however, as their skill is primarly oral diarea ad nauseum.

As for the anti-war folks, we must finish the job that we started after 911 else there WILL be another major attack here. Accept reality, folks. War is not pretty but we have no choice. Nash is right as well. To not finish the job means all the flag drapped coffins from both wars AND the people who died on 911 will have died in vein.

Ideas and GOPers, now there is an oxymoron. The GOPers only have the tax-cut fiscal conservative mantra that they DID NOT pursue for 8 years. Why exactly should we have any faith in them now. Eric Cantor may be telegenic but he is a TWIT berift of any coherent ideas.

Roland Burris? NEXT! Time to move on and get past the Blago fiasco. Do the right thing senator, else they will probably run you out on a rail. Burris is a Zombie!

Please keep covering Palin. Yesterday her daughter admitted that absitinence was not workable. I have a great idea; have all the teeny boppers get their tubes tied until they are married. Oh, I forgot, birth control is verboten.
I'm not a big fan of Chris Matthews, but he made a observation yesterday that is very true: Obama, by reaching out to the Republicans, has shown he has class. The Repubs, by acting like spoiled brats (my words, not Matthews') have shown they don't have any class. And the public approval ratings prove it.

I wonder if Matthews' corporate media membership card will be revoked by saying something that is as true as it is politically incorrect by corporate media's Repub-friendly standards.
'the main goal of the plan is simple: prevent avoidable foreclosures by first helping homeowners who owe more than their house is now worth'

Sorry folks, but being upside down on your mortgage doesn't constitute a 'crisis' that requires government intervention.  Foreclosure is another thing, but owing more than your house is worth is part of the economic cycle that was very predictable when things were booming a few years ago.  If you're living in your home, don't need to sell it, and can pay your mortgage each month, you don't need government assistance.  We're going way too far here.
FR Mark,Here is a little info that the dems have been keeping from you and some other msm,.Obama has from the first day I heard him speck that he would address Afghanistan. It was not rhetoric,as you have now seen. And" we the people" already know who got us into the mess, and his name is George W Bush.Along with the help of is faithful VP Dick Chaney, who has been drawing a lot of attention lately.Seems Dick has a case of the jitters, knowing that if Scooter talks he may be doing time. Why is there always a question about when the republicans will come up with a new plan? How about never, they are stuck on the reagan plan and for the last 29 years have been clinging to a idea that if they say it will work it will. This is not the land of OZ and you have to do more then click your heals. But i'm sure you will be there, to hear there hashed over out dated plans. You have one true fact as to the mess on wall street and the banking industry, way to many washington politican's are tied to the ones who they now want to regulate?Boy you have to wonder about the Family Values party, that Palin is now telling that, teen pregnancy is okee dokee to her.Must have had a change of heart while she holds her own one year old and her weeks old grandson at the same time. Here is some news that may not have been of the radar for you beltway bullhorns, the brothers don't dig hockey.where do you guys live,in caves?
Honestly - I am disgusted with the mainstream news media.  I love my country and it's politics - but it's becoming harder and harder for me to watch - news commenter’s, on all stations.

Fox, I gave up on them years ago - but now it's like since President Obama and the Democratic Party have won and are now in charge of our country's policies.

The Republicans are doing all they can to undermine them and the media is doing all they can to help.

I used to watch Chris Matthews - last night I couldn't bear it - seeing Pat Buchanan and hearing him be so pessimistic about President's Obama agenda and somehow trying to set the stage for failure; by trying to associate the "stock market" with President Obama's future success - is outrageous.

I, for the first time; since 2004 - stopped looking at any and all political talk shows - because that's what they have become, last night.

I feel I am opened minded and think like most Americans and I can feel the disappointment we are having with our media coverage and it’s dictative  and persuasive approach is beginning to turn us off .

We will just stop watching, reading, and listening to you guys and just focus on the White House Web site to get our information and make our own minds.

We will continue to support President Obama by our means and just let you media folks and the Republican sore loser - play your blame games, people like Pat Buchanan will then leave the show and go back to his clan - because people like him will damage your ratings - guaranteed, he was good doing George Bush times – but he is OLD NEWS now..

I will continue to read the blogs - you guys at FR do have good information, although you do try to interject your opinions - for the most part it great information. SO, I will keep an eye on what the media and Republicans are doing by reading FR blogs.

Thank you and GOD BLESS AMERICA

Let me just say that one of your comments may have highlighted one of the problems we are having right now.  I am one of those "good borrowers" you talk about, but I'm not wondering how I'll be rewarded.  Maybe that's part of the problem in all of this, too many people/institutions are wondering what's in it for me.  Let's face it, there are people who are hurting and need help.

This plan aims to help those who need it most.  If greedy people can get past their own benefit, maybe we could give these plans the time and space to work.  Finally, those complaining about the lack of help for those who don't need it are the same ones who'd be up in arms if the plan asked for more money to cover the non-essential parties.
I sure hope you anti-war-liberals are happy with your president today. For a guy that spent much of his campaign telling us that he'd bring the troops home, then he turns around and INCREASES the troops in Afghanistan by 50% with no explanation. You anti-war libs must be really pleased with your vote.

Absolutely thrilled that we are finally going after the one who ATTACKED us instead of some two bit dictator that was no threat to anyone outside his own country. I believe most liberals aren't anti-war but were and are anti-Iraq war. Bush blew it no matter how you look at it. He knows it and has admitted it. Oh well, what's a few thousand brave souls lost and a trillion or two dollars between enemies. OOPS! Georgie you messed up again. Wrong war Georgie.
I know I heard this at least a dozen times.  Keep hating though.  Your position and support have become much like your party, irrelevant.

=============

Will the sons and daughters of America that die running around the moutains of Afghanistan looking for bin Laden (who is probably not even there) be "irrelevant" too. Why don't you pick up a gun and go help them root through all the booby-trapped caves?

You and your ilk will be irrelevant soon enough too.
Maybe the GOP is using "old" ideas because they are the ones we should be following. We got into this crisis by overspending and accumulating debt, now we are going to ask the government to do the same?
A year ago during the primary season I read something that said the Republicans secretly were hoping to lost the presidency so that the Democrats would have to fix all the messes of the Bush/Cheney administration, allowing the Republicans to sit on the sidelines and take shots at the Democrats as they governed.  The patriot in me didn't want to believe this but the cynic in me now does.  Everything on President Obama's agenda to date is addressing the disasters of the last 8 years--who knows when he'll get to his own ideas?
When did lies, distortions, and perverting the truth become acceptable in this society?
Our society has fallen into decadence, which is always the precursor to a democracy failing.
We became apathetic, lazy, self serving, and sold our collective souls to credit default swaps and big business to pad our 401k accounts.

This country is falling into a second class nation, and yet political parties as solely focused on "we're right and you're wrong" and playing political games with the future of this country.

conservatives, you might fundamentally disagree with the president, but that doesn't mean you have to be disagreeable.
Liberals, you might have cause for disagreeing with  republican philosophy, but that doesn't mean that name calling and second grade shenanigans.

All this has shown me is that perhaps the Greatness of America is just a myth, when all its citizens are still learning how to act more mature than my 8 year old son...

not all of us are like this, and you know who you are.

to the rest of the country, grow up or the United States of America will be read about in history books like greece and Rome; model civilizations who couldn't stop their own self destruction.
MSNBC.com, you have outrated CNN for several months, the main reasons you haven't pushed Palin, Rove, Joe the plumber etc down our throats. Do not start now!
Although you show negativity in EVERYTHING our President does, you do not go completely overboard.
Why is not the fact that Cornyn, the rightous, antiAmerican republican is not in the headlines for accepting a $7000 plus trip from Stanford who is accused of bilking people out of billions of dollars?
If this had been a Democrat it would be repeated over and over. Chuck, you need to balance out more. Stick to facts, ask rational questions, point out discrepancies, on both sides, and be the commentator you are supposed to be.
OK! YOU WANNA GO TO WAR?!? OK, WE GO TO WAR! YOU F WITH ME, YOU F'ING WITH THE BESS!....

F! BIN LADIN & AL'QAIEDA! F! THE TALIBAN! I BURRY THOSE COCKAROACHES!...

SAY HELLO TO MY NEW PRESIDENT & 10,000 MORE DEVIL DOGS...HOORAH AND SEMPER FI!!!
The NHL has some work to do with the First Fan: And speaking of America’s most famous hockey mom, did anyone else catch Obama’s revelation to the CBC that he’s never attended a hockey game? He never attended a Blackhawks game?

So nice to see that you guys have your eye on the ball...er, puck...today!
Not to worry First Read, Palin will be alright. She's got more honesty, integrity and character than anyone Obama has chosen for his cabinet. The media assassination she faced was expected, as was Obama's "I screwed up" remark after he actually did more than screw up.

Palin's political career is far from over and it's always nice to know that First Read will keep us informed on any triviality in her daily life just like FR does in Obama's daily life. Right?
The Repukes need to "OWN THEIR MISTAKES", then perhaps bipartisanship can be a reality.

If they never admit they did everything wrong, they will stay with their old positions. From Iraq to Afghanistan to the Housing Crisis, Wall Street Crisis, Auto Crisis, and general GREED and mismanagement of everything!

Note to the party of NO!:  OWN YOUR MISTAKES!!!!
If you are going to post at least get the story straight.

Sgt Joe Bob and God Help us:

President Obama, while campaigning, never advocated bringing troops home from Afghanistan. He always stated that Iraq was the wrong war and would bring the troops home from there in a responsible manner. He stated Afghanistan was the war we should have been fighting with more troops.

Try not to let your hatred of President Obama cloud your thinking before spewing your false accusations here.
I sure hope you anti-war-liberals are happy with your president today. For a guy that spent much of his campaign telling us that he'd bring the troops home, then he turns around and INCREASES the troops in Afghanistan by 50% with no explanation. I, for one, am damn proud that we finally have a President who seems to remember who it was who actually DID attack us.

Remember bin Laden?  W didn't seem to remember him!
Pretty funny to see the Obama-lovers flip-flopping on their anti-war rants.  All of a sudden it's perfectly OK that Obama has become a warmonger.  Even after he lied about wanting to bring the troops home.
God Help Us - Obama Won't! (Sent Wednesday, February 18, 2009 9:45 AM)

Obama has NEVER said he would bring troops home from Afghanistan but did say he would reduce the troop force in Iraq. These are two different wars and two different countries. When are you people going to realize that. Warmongers fight wars just to do it. Obama is not fighting a war for no reason like we did in Iraq. He is going after the ones responsible for killing thousands of people in New York, Virgina, and Pennsylvania when we were savagely attacked on September 11, 2001.

I know it is hard for you jingoists to distinguish one war from another. They are all delightful to you but President Obama and the liberals can tell the difference.

If John hits Mike we shouldn't go after Bob. That is what happened and now President Obama is trying to fix that. He has a huge mess to clean up and he is off to a good start.
