*** One month down: Today marks exactly one month since Obama was inaugurated. The country, and the world frankly, is engaged on pretty much anything this president does. The Blackberry-clutching candidate Obama joked on the campaign that a president needs to multi task. Well, he’s gotten his shot at that so far. It’s been a month of successes: passing the largest economic stimulus bill in the history of the country while retaining high approval numbers. And pitfalls: losing the spin war at the outset of the stimulus, Daschle (and other nominee) tax problems, lobbying exceptions, the Commerce Department (just in general -- what a mess), Geithner’s TARP II rollout. And there’s a whole lot more to come: Housing, health care, climate change, the labor-business fight, Afghanistan, Iraq, Iran, North Korea, Israel-Hamas, and on. Republicans have been unimpressed. In an e-mail blasted out (twice) to reporters this morning, they stress this has been a “disappointing month,” one “marked by wasteful spending, failed bipartisanship, and questionable ethics.” Ask yourself this, what will be more remembered -- Nancy Killefer’s taxes, field mice and Bill Lynn’s lobbying? Or that Obama got a more than $700 billion bill through Congress in less than a month -- and most importantly, to both Democrats and Republicans, whether it works at all?

*** The great challenge that this White House is dealing with is the 24/7 nature of the Twittering media that no other president has ever dealt with on the policy front. It's the natural evolution, considering that campaigns have gotten this kind of coverage for years. Still, this environment of incremental up-down rulings by the punditocracy (most notably business pundits, see yesterday) on Obama's first month of policy, is quite the message handling challenge for this White House. Right now, it’s chosen to deal with it by flooding the zone; instead of pushing one storyline a week, they go ahead and try and sell multiple messages. Can they keep up the pace?

Video: GOP governors split over stimulus. Gov. Tim Pawlenty, R-Minn., discusses.

*** The governors are coming: After a furious week (including Obama signing the stimulus into law, unveiling his home-foreclosure plan, and traveling to Canada), all eyes are now turning to Tuesday’s big address to Congress. But before then, the governors are coming to town for the National Governors Association conference. Some events: Saturday kicks off with a press conference with Govs. Ed Rendell (D) and Jim Douglas (R) at 10:00 am ET, as well as with a panel on energy and infrastructure (with T. Boone Pickens and Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger). Schwarzenegger and Rendell will debate at 3:00 pm ET on what the nation’s priorities should be. On Sunday, President Obama hosts a black-tie dinner for the governors at 7:30 pm. And on Monday, there's a governors-only meeting with Obama at 9:30 am ET. There are two obvious storylines: The first is the economy and the stimulus plan, which provides quite a bit of money to the states to help balance their budgets. Some prominent Republican governors, all potential 2012 presidential candidates, (Bobby Jindal, Haley Barbour, Rick Perry, Sarah Palin, Mark Sanford) have not only been outspoken against the stimulus, they've also said they might reject the funds intended for their states. Recently, however, both Perry and Sanford have now signaled they'll probably take the money. It's also worth noting that other Republican governors like Schwarzenegger and Charlie Crist have supported the stimulus.

*** Showcase showdown: The other storyline is 2012, given that the NGA will most definitely be a showcase for GOP governors who might run for president: Palin, Jindal, Crist, Tim Pawlenty and possibly Sanford. Palin's office, though, told First Read that she WILL NOT be attending. (They’ll have to change the program, since Palin’s still listed as hosting a “natural resources” panel.) Wonder what the temperature will be like when Sanford and Crist pass in the hall… just sayin’. With no Palin, it'll be Jindal who may get the most "Is he the future of the party?" coverage. He gets the prime spot on Tuesday, the Republican response to President Obama's joint session speech, but before Tuesday, he'll be on "Meet the Press" -- a place quite a few presidential wannabes have begun their invisible campaigns.

*** The Dems: Don’t forget the potentially news-making Democratic governors expected to attend, like, New Jersey's Jon Corzine (who's up for re-election in 2009 and dealing with poor poll numbers), New York's David Paterson (still under fire after the badly executed Senate appointment), Illinois' Pat Quinn (who might have to make his own Senate appointment, if Roland Burris resigns -- fat chance, right?), Kansas' Kathleen Sebelius (headed to HHS?), and Michigan's Jennifer Granholm (who leads a prime auto manufacturing state facing tough economic times).

*** Against the stimulus before they were for it: We clipped a few items yesterday that mentioned House Republicans who now are for at least parts of the stimulus after they voted against it. Look at this list of House Republicans that the DCCC has tracked:
-- Michigan’s Pete Hoekstra’s Twitter boasting the $8,000 home rebate (which was a Republican idea, we should say);
-- Leonard Lance (NJ) hoping for money for a local project
-- Greg Walden (OR) advocating for taking the funds for his district
-- Blaine Luetkemeyer (MO) touting “shovel-ready” as well as educational benefits of the bill;
-- Don Young claiming he “won a victory for the Alaska Native contracting program and other Alaska small business owners” in the stimulus;
-- Ken Calvert (CA) saying he’d take what money he can; and
-- John Mica (FL), who we mentioned yesterday, lauding Obama’s dedication to high-speed rail.

Huh? This is going to be a tight rope for these GOPers to walk. It’s why we thought they’d given themselves cover to vote for it on the second go round when $100 billion had been stripped out. But they were all whipped into voting against, and if these statements are any indication, could be problematic at home.

*** You don't know Jack: AP does a roundup of all the ethically challenged Democrats, included in the roundup is just one line about the mess involving Democratic Rep. Jack Murtha.

It involves illegal contributions from a defense contractor, among other things; of course, Murtha's always had a very cozy relationship with the defense industry, thanks to the prominence of his brother, the defense lobbyist. But keep an eye on this one: it could to be ugly. First, Murtha himself, seems to walk the ethical line regularly, starting with his involvement in ABSCAM in the early '80s to now. Second, he's close to Speaker Nancy Pelosi, will he end up muddying her up, even if it's unsuspecting? DId she turn too much of a blind eye toward him, simply because she goes out of her way to respect the House's seniority system? Murtha was a cause celeb for about six months in '06 when he became the party's anti-war spokesperson; quite a few unaware Democrats sidled up to Murtha and may now find out they made a mistake.

*** Obama today: While the governors will be getting Obama's attention over the weekend, today he meets with mayors. Obama, Vice President Biden, Energy Secretary Steven Chu, HUD Secretary Shaun Donovan, Education Secretary Arne Duncan, Attorney General Eric Holder, EPA administrator Lisa Jackson and Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood attend a meeting at the White House at 10:30 am ET with the U.S. Conference of Mayors to discuss the stimulus bill. If there's been one group that has embraced the stimulus, it's been this one, but Obama, per NBC’s Savannah Guthrie, will also issue a bit of a warning: Spend the money on good projects; don’t be wasteful or you’ll have to come back to the White House to answer for it. Afterward, the president meets with senior advisers and then lunches with Biden. Obama’s schedule also has him looking at next week. In the afternoon, he works on his Tuesday address to Congress.

*** BCS meet Capitol Hill: After an undefeated season, Utah finished sixth in the BCS and was eliminated from contention for a potential national championship. (Of course, other teams, like Texas -- no specific reason for mentioning them -- had even better claims to the title game.) And today, the commissioner of Utah’s Mountain West Athletic Conference pitches Congressional staffers on his proposed reforms to the Bowl Championship Series. (There will be more details on his proposal in a couple of weeks. Generally, he wants to make it more of a “performance-based system” -- was all we could get from his folks.) The system is broken; we’ve oft-advocated on this page for an eight-team college playoff solution. ’Horns spring practice starts later this month. Let’s get this done.

A huge storyline that progressed yesterday is New York Governor's David Paterson's incredible collapse. Just a few days had passed since a Q-pac poll (cited here, I believe) found Paterson trailing Cuomo by 33% (!!), and now a new SUSA poll finds Paterson's approval rating collapsing by 51% in just one month: http://campaigndiaries.com/2009/02/19/paterson-burr/

This is truly unheard of, and has fascinating consequences for 2010. Can the GOP actually contest this seat?
You know what I find entertaining? The media created “backlash” against President Obama’s mortgage plan . . . David Gregory used that word this morning on Morning Joe-ke.

You get one CNBC reporter ranting and raving like a loon on the trading floor (being cheered on by the same greedy SOB’s who helped to create this whole sorry mess), and some cherry picked interviews with folks who “don’t wanna pay their neighbors mortgage”  (they all use the exact same phrasing – it’s like they’re reading a script or something – strange), and you have an instant, media created backlash!

Well, manufactured backlash or no, something has to be done.

The private sector hasn’t stepped up with a plan.

The Bush Administration didn’t have a plan.

The Republican Party doesn’t have a plan.

President Obama has a plan. So don’t start popping off now, it’s a little late in the game for that.

P.S. Also growing weary of the “Wall Street is waiting for a banking plan” story line. When the banking plan is ready to be announced, it will be announced. Good plans take time to create. If Wall Street doesn’t like “uncertainty”, they should have thought of that before they started selling made up derivative products with phony values.

The days of knee jerk governing based on gut feelings and campaign contributions is OVER. I say good riddance.

P.S.S. Making Secretary Geithner the media whipping boy because he is a quiet, thoughtful person, and doesn’t rant and rave like the losers you have working at CNBC is pretty ridiculous. Less than 3 months ago you were all telling us how great he was. He gives one speech you don’t like and now suddenly he’s an idiot. Secretary Geithner hasn’t changed, and apparently the media hasn’t either. Still putting “narratives” ahead of “news”.
So how much more of the taxpayers money is Obama going to spend today?
Harper Valley PTA.

Pat Buchanan decided somewhere along the way that white people are perfect. Their kids don’t take drugs, they’re not alcoholics; when they grow up they don’t cheat on their spouses, they don’t have more than one ex-wife, they don’t pay off their mistresses, they don’t have bank accounts in Swiss banks to avoid paying taxes here.  Heck they don’t cheat on their taxes period. They don’t take corporate welfare. They don’t exploit their employees. They don’t start wars where soldiers die, including African Americans. Well, this isn’t true. White people in government do start wars. They just don’t go and fight in them. Neither do the warmongers in the media.

But evidently all upstanding citizens. Afterall, they go to church.

I thought the Republican Party was going to fashion themselves after the Taliban? Well, it looks like they’re changing their minds again and have instead decided to go hip hop.

I have to say that I can’t wait to see Mitch McConnell, Lindsey Graham, John Boehner, Rush Limbaugh and Michael  Steele, the current leaders of the GOP, in their new over-sized jeans. I wonder if they’ll be wearing a belt. Because if they decide to be really cool and not wear one, I guess we’ll soon know if they wear boxers, briefs or bikini. This is assuming they wear underwear. Let’s hope so. A person can only take so much.

Republicans have to get with the program. They need to look at things as they really are in this country. Or they're never going to win another election. Period. Because right now, they're just plain crazy.
I was rather surprised that Lahood is proposing to raise taxes to raise more money for transportation infrastructure.  I'm not surprised that he's gone with the Big Brother solution of placing computer chips in cars that would rat out how many miles someone drives.  He definitely didn't think through the logistics of getting those chips into older cars.  Rather he should just advocate raising the gas tax but some percentage and make those who waste the most gas pay the most in increased gas taxes.

Raise the Gas Tax!
'...Schwarzenegger and Rendell will debate at 3:00 pm ET on what the nation’s priorities should be. On Sunday,...'

Gon*d the Barbarian needs to stay in California and help reform the budget process

That's HIS PRIORITY !!

We were over 100 days over due in passing our budget
Requiring a 2/3rds majority to raise taxes is madness
Requiring a 2/3rds majority to pass a budget is insane

Time to reform California budgeting

Stop Grandstanding Arnold !

You work for California, Arnold !!

Get to work and help fix California !!
Mr. Obama is almot 10 points under his inaugural approval rating.

America is waking up to the radicalism of Obama.
To Anita, Buringham, Alabama.  Thank you for correcting me regarding Eric Holder. You were right on. I was off base.

It is real easy to be offended these past few days.  I was offended by the NYPost cartoon that was totally tasteless.  I was also offended by the republicans using a picture of Jesus in their anti-stimulus ads. There is no place for that. Period. And I am constantly offended by Pat Buchanan, especially last night. If Pat had the brains of a goose, he would not go on MSNBC if the topic is about race.

A credit to David Schuster for his hypocricy watch. It is amazing to see the republicans who voted against the stimulus bill to lie and say they were for it.  Steele will be no help to the GOP.  They have no leader and no one is on the horizon. No one can put Humpty-Dumpty back together again...in my lifetime.

President Obama has been in office for a month and it is amazing how he has approached our many problems in a cool and somber manner. He's doing a great job and will continue to be supported by the American people. Simple rule, doing something is better than doing nothing.
FR --- And there’s a whole lot more to come: Housing, health care, climate change, the labor-business fight, Afghanistan, Iraq, Iran, North Korea, Israel-Hamas, and on.

Why do all the items on this list cost the American Taxpayer more and more money?
And what about those delusional Dems who were FOR the STIMULUS before they even read it. Crooked to the max.
I'm glad that Obama keeps reaching out to differrent groups, like today mayors.  Unlike some repugnant one governors who talk tough about not accepting money, which they will anyway, the mayors are far more practical about receiving money to help their cities keep up the services they provide.  There should have been more money for helping out states and cities going under financially in order to keep more people employed.

We can see how hypocritical the repugnant ones are as they voted against the stimulus package and now crow about how they got money for their constituents.  It's really pitiful to see the repugnant ones whine about rats and ACORN or health czars that are just flat out lies, but then the repugnant ones never bother with the facts or the truth.

Investigate the bushwhacker administration!
Well I sure hope the goobers from the red states don't come to town with hat in hand...the rest of us have transferred enough welfare to these states over the decades...alabamy and miserablesippi are still third world states even after billions in tax transfers...you just can't help the deliberately ignorant and poorly educated...
What a difference a month makes as Obama has shown us more success in a month than Clueless George showed in 8 years.  Obama has shown he is the leader we need now and we are in much better hands now than the past 8 years.

Thanks First Read for being such a great site to come to to read good political stories and make comments on them.  Keep up the great work!

From Huff Post:

'Iseman drops lawsuit against Times

Vicki Iseman has dropped her $27 million lawsuit against The New York Times, according to a staff memo obtained by Politico.

The memo, from Washington bureau chief Dean Baquet, is below.

   To the staff,

Vicki Iseman has dropped her lawsuit against The Times, just weeks after it was filed. We paid no money. We did not apologize. We did not retract one word of the story, which was a compelling chapter in the tale of Senator John McCain and his political rise.

The story stands as a powerful examination of a presidential candidate who cast himself as an ethics reformer and scourge of special interests, yet seemed blind at times over the course of his career to appearances of conflicts of interest.

The article was the result of deep reporting, dozens of interviews and an abundance of caution. I am as proud now of the work of the reporters -- David Kirkpatrick, Jim Rutenberg, Stephen Labaton, and Marilyn Thompson -- as I was the day it ran...'

Not worth the trouble, huh ?

Google 'rolling Stone McCain' to see the article about McCain's relentless womanizing

All you Mavericks

Dissapointing first month is an understatement! We would be so much better off if Mccain and Palin were in office instead of this democrap and all his corrupt Chicago buddies. They're quickly taking this country straight to hell. Hopefully the republican minority can keep us from totally going to S H I T. and if we survive these next 4 years it will only be becuase of them!

Impeach Obama
"Palin's office, though, told First Read that she WILL NOT be attending [the NGA]".

Sarah has got a few problems to take care of, back home- before she can get back to being a "Rising Star" in the GOP.
------------------------------------------------------
From the Washington Post:  Here is Sarah sitting down with the Alaska state legislature-

"She looked ill at ease, more defensive than we've been accustomed to seeing her," said one legislator who was there and spoke on the condition of anonymity because he said he might need to work with Palin.
-----------------------------------------------------

When a fellow Republican at the meeting asked her if she'd like to share her thoughts on upcoming plans for governing their state- she complained that they were "putting her on the spot".  HELLO!  Sarah- you are the Governor, ya know?!

It's not like they asked you what you read, or anything super-scary like that, also, too.
Against the stimulus before being for it -- having your cake and eating it, too.  Partying like France in 1789.  Off with their heads, too.
Obama has managed to carry on his campaign luck and remain politically and popularly strong despite the myriad gaffes that plagued his first month.

Even better for Obama, the very same Republicans who railed against his "socialist" stimulus are now touting the many benefits the plan will shower upon their states and districts, with the GOPers gleefully counting up the jobs and revenue to be created.

Whatever incoherent psycho-babble you're blogging this morning, I disagree with it.
"Today marks exactly one month since Obama was inaugurated. The country, and the world frankly, is engaged on pretty much anything this president does. "
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
Despite the intense scrutiny he is under, President Obama is making confident and steady progress towards the goals he has set for our nation.

I have full confidence in his ability to lead our country through the stormy waters ahead.

I have heard many in the media comment that the President is being too negative in his assessment of our country's future. However, I find his honesty about the challenges that we face refreshing.

President Obama is trying to rebuild not only confidence in our financial markets, but more importantly, confidence that we can TRUST our government.

I would rather hear the truth than the sanitized propaganda that we have been subjected to over the past 8 years.

How do you go from a fundamentally sound economy to the brink of economic collapse?

How do you go from "Mission Accomplished" to a six year quagmire?

You do it with spin and lies. The American people deserve better. President Obama is treating us like responsible adults. The American people can't help rebuild a country that we are being told is not broken.
PRESIDENT OBAMA GOT MORE DONE IN ONE MONTH, THAN GEROGE BUSH GOT DONE IN 8 YEARS. THE PROBLEM WAS THAT BUSH THOUGHT HE WAS A KING.
Can they keep up this pace? The question should be Can the press keep up?It seems that a whole lot of people have lost faith in how the press has chosen to spin the news to make it more appealing.Giving opinion's instead of sticking to reporting, you know, you get a story, you research it,you ask questions, you put together the facts, you reveal your source and we form an opinion. The BCS is a joke,Controlled by a few, more interested in ratings and who's team travels with more fans,it;s that simple. So how do we get a real champion,A play off, small schools are being shut out of the big payday bowls, not because they are not good enough,Just ask the Oklahoma.I tired on the same schools getting in because of there name .
I LOVE THE WAY THE REPUBLICANS ARE TALKING ABOUT WORKING WITH THE PRESIDENT WHEN IN FACT THAT HAVENT WORKE WITH HIM AT ALL.

THEY CAN KEEP ACTING LIKE SPOILED CHILDREN AND GET DEFETED IN 2010. IM STILL TRYING TO FIGUR THEM OUT. THEY WANT THE PRESIDENT TO WORK WITH THEM AND WHAT DO THEY DO THEY STICK IT TOO HIM AT HIS EVERY MOVE. ITS TIME THE REPUBLICANS IN THE HOUSE AND SENATE TO GROW UP AND ACT LIKE ADULTS AND WORK WITH THE PRESIDENT.
Rick Santelli is more disappointing and should realize how idiotic his farce was yesterday. Ponzi schemes, elevated unemployment, tarp bailouts, and he want to grandstand. One day he may need help.
Can they keep up the pace?
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
Can the republicans keep up their foolishness? They have a base to report to. T. Boone Pickens has a monopoly on the water to promote his wind power a.k.a. Republican hot air.
Republican governors Schwarzenegger and Charlie Crist have supported the stimulus because they understand Change.

Roland Burris will not resign. Did Craig resign. His function despite the exceeded or lack of limit is to help pass legislature.
Ponzi schemes, elevated unemployment, yet Pat Buchanan was very sardonic on The Chris Matthews show, does Pat Buchanan seriously think that institutional racism is over? Pat Buchanan you still have the KKK and the confederate flag to be proud of. Yes, Pat Buchanan you are a coward. You are afraid of educated self- determined African Americans, as well as other Americans who have chosen to not maintain the status quo. So why not be honest to redistribute the pain. We are taking responsibility for our community Mike Barnicle pick up a history book so can learn how the Black family was deliberately separated due to fear of slave insurrections. That did   not happen in the West Indies because the Portuguese and Spanish kept the structure of slave families together.  You and Pat Buchanan need to read a conservative Thomas Sowell’s book “Race and Economics” before you go shooting your mouths off about the collapse of the Black families. Pat Buchanan, as long as you espouse obstructionism, you’ll all be afraid of educated minorities. Illiteracy, wedlock, crime are first of are remnants of slavery you, and your ancestors espoused.

Thank you, Pat Buchanan, for not going into your diatribe about saving Blacks, bringing us to America and giving us programs.

The main beneficiaries of those programs were whites. These were part of the War on Poverty and most of the poor were, and are, white.
Pat Buchanan, is not unaware that from 1789 to the 1980s in the U.S. that white applicants were routinely advanced over black applicants no matter how well qualified those black applicants were?

So Mike Barnicle and Pat B put a sock in it.

The Repubs are in such a state of shock and awe at this President, they don't know what message they want to convey to their base. When Michael Steele, the counterfeit Obama, released his plans to get the Repub party back on track, I could only clap my hands in glee. He thinks the hip-hop, urban spin will be a winning combination to pull this sinking ship out of the quick sand.

The hipocrisy of the Repubs is stunning. They rant and rail against the Stim Pkg but are waiting with outstretched hands for the money. Their principals are shaky to say the least and oh so easily bought.
I just don't get it! If there are so many smart Republicans and they know how to fix the economy, the housing and bank mess, then how did they let America get in the mess we are in now. Everybody now has a cure for what ills american but did not have a cure eight years ago before we got sick.  THIS IS SHAMEFUL!

I'm glad President Obama is not feeding the American people a lot of lies about what's going on. President Obama continue to be truthful to the American people because the truth will always win in the end.

Everybody also want their 15 minutes of fame like joe the plummer but really don't have solutions for the problem. SHAMEFUL!
President Obama will always be noted for:

1. the unheard of record amount of taxpayer dollars he authorized to be spent during his first month of office.

2. the number of nominees he provided with legal/tax problems.

3. the lack of making an appearance in Kentucky during the ice natural disaster that occured there.

4. the escalation of American involvement in Afghanistan.

5. the campaign promises he broke so early on in his presidency that angered those who supported him.

Under the circumstances and challenges we are facing as a nation, so far he is doing a good job. No matter what he does there will always be some that won't be pleased with anything he does. Case and point, the stimulas bill. Republicans didn't vote on the bill, some taking credit for the bill, won't take the money in the bill, hopeing and complaing that the bill fails or will fail (which means our nation fails) for political reasons.

The capitialist on wall street yelling like an idiot, not to mention disrespectful and angry because money hasn't been thrown to wall street. They have gotten comfortable with their sleezy deal making, the same deal making that has gotten this country into this mess. He should be helping the homeowners that he is pretending to be concerned about find out where/who they sold the mortgages to.
"You can please some of the people some of the time, but you "can't please all of the prople all of the time."
And Heath Shuler who voted against the stimulus is now in NC talking it up.  Why are only Republicans mentioned in your article?
The bill President Obama signed this week directs more than $350 million to oversight, virtually guaranteeing boom times in the field of government.

The first hiring spree to result from the $787 billion stimulus plan might not involve construction workers or teachers but government auditors, investigators and lawyers.

The stakes, financially and politically, are huge. Republicans who criticized the stimulus plan as a bloated spending bill have already announced a “stimulus watch” program, intended to seize on any signs of waste or mismanagement and turning them into ammunition for the 2010 elections.

The government might now need auditors for its auditors and new overseers for inspectors general, who typically answer directly to Congress.

The $350 million for oversight dwarfs the $50 million that Congress provided last fall to create a special inspector general’s office to oversee the $700 billion financial system bailout. The new stimulus package includes roughly $253 million for inspectors general, $84 million for the transparency board, and an additional $25 million for the Government Accountability Office.

Can we all agree that Government has just taken a giant step in getting bigger and a lot of white collar folks will be the ones getting a nice chunk of the stimulus cash first?

I don’t think that’s what we had in mind when the votes were being cast for this bill. Ultimately, who is paying for all this added government build up?
Why would the AP do a roundup of Ethically challenged DEMOCRATS? There are just as many (if not more) ethically challenged REPUBLICANS (Norm Coleman, David Vitter, the whole of the Bush administration...)!! Why not include both...oh, I see, they are creating the story on which they want to report. "Ethically challenged Democrats" *sigh* here we go.
Stock Market does not like Obama plan.

Market may drop below 7000 today before close.

Obama preaching fear is destroying the American spirit to win. A sad period in our history that a president is not more positive about our abilities, our will and our determination.
Every day Obama has been in office, I, and many, many others, have become poorer. Whether it's from the pending higher taxes we will pay, our investments being destroyed, or are jobs being in jeopardy because of the extra burdens Obama's government is putting on our employers.

Obama is so out of touch with Main Street America.

Politics, politics, politics, while our country teeters on the brink of a major economic depression caused by eight years of a destructive party of "Yes", now want to stand with their hands out. This is rich indeed... who will help me plant yhe harvest?, to who will help me eat the food. Now they want to reap the benefits.
So the banking plan takes time, thought and consideration because "Good plans take time to create", but the stimulus plans couldn't be delayed in a committee for a moment.  Actually there's a thought.  Instead of congress rushing of to Rome on the taxpayers dime, why are they not holding some committee hearings on the bank bailout plan.  Why is Geithner formulating this plan in secret? Seems very Dick Cheney to me.  Who is helping formulate this plan and when are they holding meetings?  Why do we accept this secrecy by the goverment?
To Pat, Boston:

Thank you so much for your post - I too saw Pat Buchanan ranting and raving about "black people" last night, but I chose to ignore him.

Everyone has their "senior" moments . . . sometimes I think Pat is MSNBC's loveable but deranged uncle from Candidate Obama's race speech! lol

You know what I think? I think the Attorney General chose his words poorly. I know what he meant to say, and I'm sure that the media does too. But the AG has to take his lumps, and then we all get to move on.

P.S. Also thanks for the picture you painted of the "hip hop" GOP . . . here's hoping Saturday Night Live was listening! lol

These folks' constituents are going to be forced to pay for the spendulus bill, so why shouldn't they now support it?  It's not much different than a Hillary backer during the primaries throwing their support to Obama once he got the nomination.  They fought a principled fight against it, and then accepted the fate of the majority.  They'd be fools not to support something their constituents ultimately will be footing the bill for.

Lay-offs at MSNBC prompt slower and fewer posts for those out of work with nothing better to do but argue and complain and point fingers.

Well, I got to get going to punch the old time clock.
Good day to you all.
So how much more of the taxpayers money is Obama going to spend today?

Were you asking about Presidential spending when monoey was being sent to Iraq hand over fist, to the tune of $1 Trillion?  If we had that trillion now, we wouldn't have needed a stimulus package, would we?  Seems to me we should have been just as worried about protecting our country's infrastructure as we were about protecting our oil interests overseas.
I hope to see the republican governors actually turn the money down, republicans are always big on conviction, absolutes on abortion, guns, gays, taxes,etc...
Time to put up, or shut up!!
I will admire them for doing this, that their conviction is that strong, after all murder is wrong right!! Killing innocent people is wrong, right!?
What happens when say a bomb falls on the wrong house and kills a bunch of innocent civilians, as it has in Iraq, and Afghanistan, and Pakistan, if these people are your relatives, and friends are you pleased?
Probably not, you may think an injustice has been done, and might join an insurgent group to oppose the group that wronged you.
I have an idea, why don't we take all the politicians  from both the senate, and the house, put them on a very leaky ship, with engine problems that will sink if nothing gets done, tow them into the middle of the ocean, and cut them loose!
Whats happening now is one group is trying to repair the leaks, and one group is being critical about how the repairs are being done without helping to repair anything. The ship will sink if everyone doesn't put their differences aside and pitch in to fix the ship.
The last 8 years one side has spent us into a ship full of holes, (MAYBE WE SHOULD SPEND OUR MONEY ON REBUILDING THIS COUNTRY INSTEAD OF IRAQ).
We need to see that working together we can fix whats wrong, stop the bickering, and get it done before we do sink our country!!!
Mr. Obama is almot 10 points under his inaugural approval rating.

America is waking up to the radicalism of Obama.

A 10% drop shows that, does it?  How does that drop stack up against the change in approval ratings of Bush Jr, Clinton, Bush Sr, or Reagan 1 month after taking the oath of office.  See, you need to make comparisons to prove points.  If his decline was less than the rest, you have no story.  If his decline was more than the rest, you *might* have something.

But all you have right now is nothing but partisan rhetoric.
And what about those delusional Dems who were FOR the STIMULUS before they even read it. Crooked to the max.

And what about all those Republicans who were against it without reading it, and decided to play politics and vote based on what they perceive is the need of their party to do to regain power, rather than what their individual states may need?  Funny how you fail to discuss that side of the equation.

Also funny how the GOP voted against it, but now certain GOP are touting the successes they managed to get put into it, and how some who originally said they might not take the money, are now taking it.

Games games games...
Against the stimulus before being for it -- having your cake and eating it, too.  Partying like France in 1789.  Off with their heads, too.

Exactly.  It brings to mind the campaign against John Kerry, when they kept playing that sound bite over and over of him saying he was originally for something before he was against it, and all the accusations of flip flopping.  Well, now the flip flops are on the other feet, and the hypocrites are singing a totally different tune about it, aren't they?  Guess it is only ok when they do it!
After watching Pat Buchannan on Chris Mattews last night – I was left thanking God that not all White people share his views on Black people (and most likely  anyone else non-White).  He went on such a racist rant I’m surprised MSNBC is doing some apologizing this morning.  I was embarrassed for him and totally surprised that Mr. Barnicle seemed in agreement with him.  His debate with Prof Dyson mostly one sided because there was a “technical” difficulty every time Prof Dyson spoke.  This hate Pat spewed was all because Eric Holder said we are a nation of cowards when it comes to racism in this country. Mr. Holder never said “a nation of white cowards”, yet Barnicle and Buchannan reacted as if Mr. Holder spoke of them personally. (Guess there is such a thing as Whtie guilt)  When I first read the articles the very first thought that came to mind in regards “cowardice” was the KKK.  Is there anyone reading this think that that group of people are anything other than cowards?  Yet Buchannan goes off on a tangent about Black culture that was so stereotypical and with some outrageous untruths.  What in the world does Black teenage pregnancies, Black on Black crime have to do with the racism that experienced by non-whites on any given day?
Why would Republicans send out an email (twice) bringing attention to how badly they've failed the bipartisanship test and that they still have ethics problems?  I guess it proves that they STILL don't get it.

These are the people that have a pulse on the people and neighborhoods in all of the cities in our nation. I can't recall a President (correct me if I'm wrong) ever meeting with mayors. Too many times state governors get funds intended for city projects and the money never make it them.

In order to correct problems, you have to properly address the problems where they will be most effective. It is a good thing to be a "community organizer" after all, isn't it.

Richard, Washington State: '...Could you bless us with some examples of what benefits the theory of evolution has actually produced?...'

Richard, it's not a question of 'benefits' there are to science

Science is an attempt to understand our world
To understand how it works

Our ancestors didn't knwo about germs or nutrition a few hundred years ago
Now, we do
Now, we can prevent disease with public sanitation and personal hygiene
That's a benefit, isn't it ?

With science we have reached the moon, plumbed the seas and begun understanding our earth

We know enough now to try to stop polluting our Earth and over fishing our seas

Are those 'benefits' ?

I just saw an article about finding culprits for Alzheimers.
Presumably we could 'cure' or at least 'prevent' Alzheimers

Would we have learned about genetics without evolution ?
We’ve learned about evolution and that led to the discovery of DNA
That leads to us understanding how heredity (ergo: DNA) is involved in some diseases
In the future this makes ‘cures’ or ‘therapies’ possible
Stem cell research might find a cure for diabetes or spinal injuries

Science and technology are vital to our economic competitiveness
Notice that all our personal electronics come from Japan ?
We might want to maintain our edge in biotech with scientific research

Let's not rely on hairy Thunderers or witch doctors (sorry, Sarah) or even the astral projections (sorry, Ronnie Ray Gun) to make our critical decisions

Come on Richard, you know this stuff

N_f: You get one CNBC reporter ranting and raving like a loon on the trading floor (being cheered on by the same greedy SOB’s who helped to create this whole sorry mess),

"Greedy SOBs"? Gee, I would think the greedy SOBs are the people that bought too much house that they could afford, lied on their loan applications, and got interest only loans with the idea that they'll flip the house in a couple of years. These are are the "Greedy SOBs". And these are the very same people Obama wants to bailout with money taken by people that were honest in their intentions when they purchases their homes.

You Obama lovers really live in an alternative reality.

From Huff Post:

‘Alberto Gonzales: I’ll Cooperate with Leahy Truth Commission
Former Attorney General Alberto Gonzales appeared at a forum on Republicans and the Hispanic vote at the Capitol Hill Club this morning, getting a standing ovation from the crowd when he was pointed out by the moderator. As Gonzales left, I asked him whether he would participate in a “truth commission,” as proposed by Sen. Pat Leahy (D-Vt.), to look into alleged lawbreaking by the Bush administration.
“My view has always been to be as cooperative as possible,” said Gonzales, “and that’s what I’ve been with respect to everything. As far as I’m concerned I’ve got nothing to hide and I’ll cooperate. Every time I’ve been asked to cooperate, I’ve cooperated. In terms of what happens in the future, I’m not going to comment on that, but that is what I’ve done in the past.”
Gonzales went further: “I think only a fool would be unconcerned about any kind of commission or investigation in this political town and in this political climate. Having said that, again, because I feel like I’ve got nothing to hide and I’ve done nothing wrong, I’m not worried about the truth, so long as what we’re talking about is the truth and things don’t become politicized.”…’

Sorry Bert, we’re gonna have to water board you !!!
