Chu jumps in 'deep end of the pool'

From NBC’s John Yang

Energy Secretary Steven Chu may be a Nobel laureate Ph.D. in physics, but his first forays into energy policy suggest he's a neophyte when it comes to the ways of Washington.

At a forum with reporters on Thursday, the head of the department that has traditionally taken the lead on global oil-market policy, was asked what message the Obama administration had for the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries at its meeting next month.

"I'm not the administration," the Cabinet secretary replied. "I will be speaking and learning more about this in order to figure out what the U.S. position should be and what the president's position is."

Chu, who is still without a deputy, said he feels "like I've been dumped into the deep end of the pool" on oil policy.

The day before, reporters asked him about OPEC output levels after a speech to a group of utility regulators. He responded that the issue was "not in my domain."

Later, in a conference call to reporters, he said his answer reflected "more of my naiveté than anything else."

I feel so much more confident about our future after reading this.

President Obama is definitely on top of things.

NOT!!!!!!!!!!
smart man. he wants to make sure his message is the same as his boss's. i see nothing wrong with that. another person that thinks before he acts. this is a non-story.
Well at least he's honest!

lol

And clearly he is not owned by the oil industry.

Sounds like a winner to me!

P.S. I'll bet someone is going to have some homework this weekend! :)
Great-another administration official with training wheels.

This country may not make it to 2012.
It's only been a month. Give the administration a little time to figure out their policies and positions.

George Bush left this country in quite a mess, don't expect the new administration and departments head to have all the answers on how to fix it.

At least, he's not meeting behind close doors to craft oil policies that would ultimately benefit the oil companies, while sticking it to the less than rich citizens.

Mr. Chu, get with the Department of Interior and work it out, I am sure there is a lot of malarkey where you are, find us some cash. Start with collecting the damn taxes they mist likely negioated in favor of sex and drugs. Better yet, start with the money they gutted from us at the pumps.
Liars over at the Huff and Puff caught doctoring video,  typical of left wing america haters
OPEC doesn't listen to American energy secretaries anyway. This guy is focused on what he needs to do which is to develop green energy and to modernize jour ability to produce and distribute it.
If he's a neophyte in the ways of Washington, does that make him an expert on real life?  And how would the media know?

But isn't that exactly WHY President Obama hired him?  Or did you think that President Obama would (or should) just hire Nobel Laureate and then give him talking points?  Because that way, what's the point?

And given that it took Bush and Co. 8 years to completely wreck our environmental policy, don't you think it's reasonable to give Chu more than a day or two to figure out how to fix it?
If Chu isn't the administration, who is?
This is what happens when you take someone from academia and try to make them have a real job.
Sorry !!

I don't see anything wrong with this position
He needs to know more about the Administration's positions on petroleum

That is probably being formulated now
It's probably part of a larger energy policy

I've got more confidence in Chu than anyone Bush had appointed in any Cabinet position
Anyone but an oil company executive/lobbyist or stooge (hi Dick)

It's a clever ploy, to demonize OPEC
(Dirty Arabs)
It's THEIR OIL
They can sell it for whatever the market can bear

In 2001 (under Bush/Cheney) the Energy companies ROBBED CALIFORNIA BLIND !!
It wasn't Arabs that did this
It was Enron and Dynergy and Dick Cheney

Likewise, when oil prices rose to $4/gallon
It probably WASN'T the doing of OPEC as much as it was Chevron, Mobil, the oil oligopoly and commodity traders

But, people are trained to hate Arabs and Iranians and other 'furriners'

There are no so blind as those who WILL NOT SEE
"Another administration official with training wheels", unlike the supremely-knowledgeable Sarah Palin, who, had she been Veep, would've hit the ground running from Day One. Just don'task her about Africa.
Weren't the Obama butt-sniffers telling us Obama was going to hit the ground running when he came into office? Looks like Obama hit the ground all right. And went splat!
As far as the housing project goes, I heard a very interesting proposal from the "Mad Money" guy (can't for the life of me remember his name right now) on Chris Matthews last night.

He is going to propose nationalizing ALL MORTGAGES. "Give everyone a 4% rate, on a 40 year fixed plan! Everyone, the homeowners in trouble, and the Homeowners who are not."

This seems to be a great Idea. No one would then be asking "why do I have to subsidize irresponsible borrowers?" EVERONE BENIFITS. People who are in trouble could stay in thier homes, people who are stable would have more money in thier pockets, home values would stabalize resulting in a major source of the recession being mute.

The government would have to shell out a crapload of money upfront, but would get a respectable return on the investment. Hell, after the housing market stabalizes, and getting these bad mortgages off of the banks books, that would go a long way to stem the banking issues as well. after that the government could sell the mortgages back at a profit. EVERYONE WINS.

Now, I wonder how many Repubs. /Cons. will be bashing this idea vs. those that love it (because it will positivley affect them) even though it goes against conservative principals. I hope Obama at least gives it some thought. I'm just a regular guy (read: no economist), but this seems to be good for everyone.
He's not the Administration? Dr. Chu, I have news for you....You are part of the Administration. Cabinet posts are part of any administration. Being new to Washington you have a few things to learn. I am sure you will become better educated on such things very soon. Meanwhile get together what the Administration's policies are regarding energy and present them in a clear and concise manner.
When the lead dog (Obama) is in training pants, you can hardly expect the people that work for him to know what to do. Judd Gregg sure figured that out in a hurry.
Applications Due Today For IRS Openings

The application deadline is today for Internal Revenue Service (IRS) Revenue Officer positions in Greenwood, Indianapolis and Lafayette. Officers are trained in both tax law and collection techniques. Starting salaries range between $38,000 - $45,000.

Here comes some stimulus spending money at you.
Picture the scene at the cabinet meeting.  President Obama turns to his energy secretary and asks for a response on OPEC actions.  The energy secretary replies " I'm not the administration.  What do you think it should be Mr President?".

Heck of of a job Chuie!

How is this different from the incompetence of the last administration?  If a cabinet secretary is not the administration what is he?  Is this another blast from Dick Cheney land where you are a fourth branch of goverment?
HAAA SOOO - you media folks, think that just because someone doesn’t answer your questions when you want them to - there's a problem?

Get over you BS egos - will ya!!!!

Thank you and GOD BLESS AMERICA
First of all, Diane is very witting

Beverly, what does it mean to be 'witting' ?
Wondering (Sent Friday, February 20, 2009 12:06 PM)

I think the illiterate one meant "witty". As in "Nit-witty.
I don't mean to be so snarky, but some of this stuff really rattles my cage. This man was an excellent pick. He is just being truthful and not answering questions pulled out of the air. i am still buzzing about our old budget figures.
Another incompetent in Obama's administration.
What some people see as gaffes, I see as refreshing honesty in Biden and other administration people.  It is good to know that there is not a set agenda in the tank for the oil people like there has been.

Give these guys a chance.  We want change and they have inherited a bigger sack of trouble than any of our others.  They are actually taking time to THINK and got the stimulus going first, which is appreciated by all of the people going to work each day wondering if the pink slip is coming that day and those who already received one.
He may be a smart man, probably is if he is a Nobel Prize winner.  His only mistake so far is leaving the office early and talking to reporters.  It happens that scientists make poor administrators.  It's a light news day so Mr. Chu needs to get a secretary to keep the media away until he has something to say.
People send me emails and people post here outrageous lies and distortions that they get from Fox, Limbaugh, Drudge, etc.   I and the other reality-based posters are expected to debunk them.  They don't seem to feel a responsibility to fact check what they pass along. Their goal seems to be to keep us busy rebutting their outrageous claims and keep us from substantial discussions and of course to get the gullible to believe the lie repeated often enough. I would like to play their game in return but I have not been able to find any liberal or progressive sites that put out lies and distortions. I guess if they did they would not be liberal or progressive by definition.  Can someone help me out.  In the meantime I found that tabloids can be a good source of nonsense to fight the nonsense.

"JUST weeks after leaving the White House, depressed and paranoid George Bush is suicidal, insiders fear. In a blockbuster world exclusive, sources tell GLOBE the ex-President is boozing up a storm - and reveal why he is terrified of Barack Obama and his own wife Laura. Don't miss a single word!" -- the Globe tabloid
Obama's stuffed his administration with folks whose only qualification is that they genuflect at the altar of the Church of Global Warming.

And if we don't shout these people down pretty soon, we're all going to have to live with whatever nightmare these deluded crackpots come up with for us.
He will be wise to talk very choppy and slow, like Obama does when not using the teleprompter.

Why would anyone expect him to know anything? I mean seriously. What is he being paid? A lot of us are saying we could give that kind of answers.

After all, Energy is not one of Obama's focus areas, is it. Ooops, my bad, looked at his web-site. IT IS.
At least, he's not meeting behind close doors to craft oil policies that would ultimately benefit the oil companies, while sticking it to the less than rich citizens.

RAH, Seattle, WA

At this point, how could anyone make a stupid speculation like that. You like he, CLUELESS.
Hey Obama:  Let me keep my liberty; you can keep the change!
Ok lefties can we set a date when we stop blaming Bush for all our problems? Obama has 'Heroically" passed the so called stimulus bill and that pretty much sent our markets further south. The "immediate gratification and all star dummy" bailout bill proposed for pinheads that had to have it all was also a hit with the markets as you can see by today's near 200 point dow drop. Chu's stumbling answers and lack of even a basic understanding of what his department is and is not supposed to be doing is sort of emblematic of the Obama administration. Turbo Tax Tim our new Secretary of the Treasury was the only man who could do the job at hand to solve our problems or so we were told. TG looked pathetic in his attempt to explain how the bank bailout will work.
It turns out he has no plan and neither does Obama or anyone else in the administration. I would prepare myself for more of this bumbling because they haven't yet rolled out the "human gaffe machine" on a full time basis. This is really going to be amateur hour and I just hope our enemies don't take advantage of our weakness
Google 'rolling Stone McCain' to see the article about McCain's relentless womanizing

All you Mavericks

MSierra, SF

The woman was purportedly sidelined from her duties after Obama’s wife, Michelle, became convinced that he had developed a personal relationship with her.

The allegations initially appeared in August, just two weeks before the Democratic convention at which Obama finally beat his opponent for the Democratic Party nomination, Hillary Clinton.

The woman, now 33, vigorously denies this as vicious and unsubstantiated gossip.

Google "Obama affairs"

Don't they all!
"We wonder what was going through Prime Minister Stephen Harper's head when thousands showed to Parliament just hoping to catch a glimpse of the American leader."
------------------------------------------------------
Like most career politicians, he was probably thinking: Hmm, how do I capitalize on this guy's mojo and get something out of it for myself?
Suburban Mom paying attention, IL

Did Obama get some cheap duty free smokes while he was up in the Great White North?
Give him a minute - clearly he is a brilliant man -- This is probably more of a reflection of inexperience in dealing with the Washington Press corps than it is a reflection on any kind of lack of expertise, I'm sure he will be fine, once he gets his footing. If he is still saying things like this in a year, then worry.

Are you serious, After W. and friends.  Who's better, Palin who barely got her degree, McCain middle class starts at 250K.  Seriously wait at least a year then talk.  You are acting as if he came into a balance budget like W. did.
At least it's not asinine "drill baby, drill" crap.

Face it, the administration is criticized for savvy insiders like Clinton, and then the administration is criticized for naive outsiders like Chu. Make up your minds what you want, people, because you can't have it both ways.
I bet they are all trying to tape together the Energy Policy that Cheney 'shredded' on his way out the door.  They may be at that for awile.  Just which boxes was he moving when he threw out his back?

The wine stains just won't come out of the carpet.  Like the Obama Hating Whiners on this site, they will live on forever.
This Diane from Illinois thing is getting fairly uninteresting. Talk about living in a vacuum, that's Diane. If she toned it down a level, she'd still be ranting. It's gotten to the point where you just skip by that person's posts because there is never anything useful or informative in them. It's either a note praising Obama, or a rant ripping someone that doesn't praise Obama. Boring.
Dr. Chu really understands that he doesn't understand everything on energy policy as of this moment.  He shows he is thinking and doesn't want to be overturned by his boss like Christie Whitman was when she was the EPA administrator.
Horse from Young Frankenstein (from another post)

Touche! Good one.
As long as the guy can come up with a comprehensive, feasible, efficient, sustainable energy plan, I'll be happy.

If this country doesn't make an about-face on corn, though, we're screwed.
There are more then just Muslim terrorists in the world... Irish terrorists just to name one other, also was it not a terrorist who blow up the FBI biulding in Kansass City was he not an American and a Christen..... It is a shame that Muslims are getting such a Raw deal... People start look in your own back yards before you deside to put down the whole Muslim People. There are good and bad in all people....

==================================================
Stephen, you are very correct!!  After all OBAMA'S BUDDY, Ayers, is a terrorist from America.  Don't think he's Christian, though.
Hey, we had a president on training wheels, and pedaling in the wrong direction!, for 8 years.  I think we can give the new folks time to unpack and locate the cafeteria before expecting them to know everything --- and also give them kudos for honesty!  I know it sounds strange, but it's just that we've gotten so unaccustomed to it.
I have been reading all the posts and am amazed that people expected on day one RESULTS. Even on day 30? I will give him at least 1 year. Why so long (is it really?) because we should have an idea by then if any of his policies will work. Gee didn't we give Bush a long time? And the same people post over and over again - doesn't anyone work?
Republicans are unimpressed....?

I must ask after reading the many negative Obama posts.... Where have all you geniuses been for the last 8 years? To read your drivel, one would think Obama got us in to this mess. NEWSFLASH: He is trying to get us OUT of this mess that he inherited, which by all accounts will need bold government intervention.

Obviously the mere scope of what he has proposed lends itself to easy, relatively small targets to rail against within each plan - but give the man credit for working his ass off to try to address these issues head on with urgency. No the plans aren't perfect, but we cannot let perfection be the enemy of the essential.....

I crack up at you clowns whining about the size of government after what has happened over the last 8 years.

I hope the Republicans continue to obstruct and vote against everything Obama is proposing despite the fact Obama has agressively reached out to them. I hope they continue to loudly oppose him every step of the way. They will be rewarded with another thumping in 2010........Good luck with your ever shrinking party folks.

My only critisim thus far would be that he needs to reel in Pelosi and Reid. The House Dems didn't help him any on the stim bill....

Reasonable Democrat
"The woman, now 33, vigorously denies this as vicious and unsubstantiated gossip."

ROFLMAO, so that's reason *enough* for you to try to spread it, right?

I can't get over how green and desperate the right wing is becoming. They're getting beaten at EVERY TURN, so they respond with the one thing they do well-smears.

As long as the guy can come up with a comprehensive, feasible, efficient, sustainable energy plan, I'll be happy.

If this country doesn't make an about-face on corn, though, we're screwed.
Mark, Adelphi, Md.

If that plan includes producing 60% or more of our electricity with nuclear plants, I'll vote Democrat the next election.

And you're right about the corn. What a huge boondoggle that has turned into.
Good grief! - - Just like Obama, making it up as he goes along!
Where do these "right wing" posts originate - North Korea?

I refuse to believe Americans - even Bush supporters - can be so anti-American and relentlessly stupid.
Anita from Birmingham Alabama: "I don't mean to be so snarky, but....."

AH HA HA HA !!!!!!  That's *ALL* you are - snarky!  Well, that and mean and racist.

And why to you have to copy and paste the whole FR article in your responses when we can clearly read it at the top of the posts??
