Gallup poll: Obama approval at 63%

From NBC's Mark Murray and Chuck Todd
According to the latest Gallup poll, President Obama's approval rating is now at 63%, which is down five percentage points from his initial rating in January. Also, his disapproval number has doubled from 12% in January to 24% now.

But be careful if you're trying to draw a dramatic conclusion about this slight downward tick. The only group of voters that has moved away from Obama are Republicans, who went from 41% approval in January to 30% now. However, Democrats' approval has remained steady (88% then, 89% now). And -- perhaps most importantly -- so has approval among independents (63% then, 63% now).

Kind of like the Stock Market.

not in the least bit surprising.
How long until Jimmy Carter Phase II has Jimmy Carter approval numbers?  Six months?
It just means the Republicans are coming out of the wood work

They're hoping nobody notices that THEY got us into this MESS

63% is higher than his victory margin in November

Imagine what this country would be like under Joihn McCain !!

(sorry, sorry I won't do that again)
To get these numbers, it helps to just poll unemployed slacker liberals and illegal aliens.
WOW!  LET'S ALL WATCH AS THE RIGHTIES DANCE WITH ORGASMIC BLISS AT THIS SHINY OBJECT!

>>>Would one of you brilliant left-wingers please explain to this ignorant Conservative how a man whose father was a Kenyan national and a British subject who was VISITING in Hawaii can qualify as "natural born"?  At best, he was born with dual loyalties and at worst with dual citizenship - both of which were the target of Section II, Article 1 of the Constitution.

Please be specific and give cites so I can learn the truth.

==========
Assuming that you are actually interested in learning the truth (I doubt that you are), here is some information for you.  First off, until you or someone else digs up the mythical Kenyan birth certificate that you righties have been questing for, you'll have to accept as fact that Obama was born in the USA, as his Hawaiian birth certificate has been deemed authentic by numerous fact checking sources.  That being established, this is an excerpt from the Keynan constitution.

>>>A person who, upon the attainment of the age of twenty-one years, is a citizen of Kenya and also a citizen of some country other than Kenya shall, subject to subsection (7), cease to be a citizen of Kenya upon the specified date unless he has renounced his citizenship of that other country, taken the oath of allegiance and, in the case of a person who was born outside Kenya, made and registered such declaration of his intentions concerning residence as may be prescribed by or under an Act of Parliament.<<<

In other words, upon turning 21, a Kenyan holding duel citizenship must either renounce his foreign citizenship, or cease being a citizen of Kenya.  Barack Obama has never renounced his US citizenship, and therefore ceased to be a Kenyan citizen and has since held only one citizenship, that of a United States citizen.

I am certainly glad you guys at FR - elaborated on this BS 63% non - sense.

No need to pretend President Obama is not popular and well like - now is it?

Thank you and GOD BLESS AMERICA
How much longer can the Republcan Party refuse to face reality? Will the media continue to treat them as a credible party even though ever other word out of their mouths is lies?

P.S. When does Alan Keye's treason trial start?

Dear Red Lines:

Please don't let the facts interfere with your fear-of-minorities fueled fantasy:

http://www.businessweek.com/investing/insights/blog/archives/2008/09/community_reinv.html

Key excerpt:
"Fresh off the false and politicized attack on Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, today we’re hearing the know-nothings blame the subprime crisis on the Community Reinvestment Act — a 30-year-old law that was actually weakened by the Bush administration just as the worst lending wave began. This is even more ridiculous than blaming Freddie and Fannie.

The Community Reinvestment Act, passed in 1977, requires banks to lend in the low-income neighborhoods where they take deposits. Just the idea that a lending crisis created from 2004 to 2007 was caused by a 1977 law is silly. But it’s even more ridiculous when you consider that most subprime loans were made by firms that aren’t subject to the CRA. . .  Not surprisingly given the higher degree of supervision, loans made under the CRA program were made in a more responsible way than other subprime loans. CRA loans carried lower rates than other subprime loans and were less likely to end up securitized into the mortgage-backed securities that have caused so many losses, according to a recent study by the law firm Traiger & Hinckley (PDF file here).

Finally, keep in mind that the Bush administration has been weakening CRA enforcement and the law’s reach since the day it took office. The CRA was at its strongest in the 1990s, under the Clinton administration, a period when subprime loans performed quite well. It was only after the Bush administration cut back on CRA enforcement that problems arose, a timing issue which should stop those blaming the law dead in their tracks. The Federal Reserve, too, did nothing but encourage the wild west of lending in recent years. It wasn’t until the middle of 2007 that the Fed decided it was time to crack down on abusive pratices in the subprime lending market. Oops. "

Educate yourself BEFORE you spew lies on the "internets" please.

Thank you.
My personal approval rating of President Obama right now is 99%.  No one should be shocked about the reduction in republican approval.  Those morons will think whatever the right-wing propaganda machine wants them to think: and right now they want them to think "Obama Bad, Liberals Bad, Kool-Aid GOOD!"
Wait tell the Indies and the Democrats find out that yes, they too will be paying the bill for the massive government bailout spending. Then lets look at the numbers.
Polls do not mean a thing in political reality. It is the people who come out ot vote. In the elections that make the real difference in a democracy. Poll numbers can change so quickly over time. That no  accurate number is given. Time to move forward Ameica!
Is it a surprise that the wagon riders (aka democrats) are pleased with Obama.  Its simple.

A government which robs Peter to pay Paul can always depend on the support of Paul.
> - George Bernard Shaw

Paul supports a president that is "promising" them more.  I say promising because he is only using smoke and mirors to make the mentally weak think that they are going to get something.  The only businesses that are creating jobs now - the federal government.  However, the problem with this is the federal government produces NOTHING they are only parasites that feed off of the working class

Not really surprising. The Republicans have gone out of their way to shore up the base and try to divide the country by trashing anything that the President proposes. Obviously it will further marginalize the Republican Party. That "Big Tent" philosophy is rapidly turning into a "Pup Tent".
When the federal government MANDATES money be spent by the states it is the federal government's responsibility to reimeurse the states for what they spend on those madates. Most states are still waiting for what they spent on their National Guard troops used by the federal government to fight Bush's war.
moir

States are still waiting for the federal money from when Clinton mandated a 100,000 new police on streets.
Wow, big surprise there.  Who cares if he has support of the repugs.  Don't need them.  The rest of us care about this country and are so impressed how hard our new President is working to fix the mess Bush left us in.  Watching the repugs "spin" is like witnessing an exorcism!!  Keep on keeping on Mr. President.  We are wtih you!  It gives me such pleasure beyond belief that Americans overwhelmingly elected an African American with the middle name "Hussein".  God, payback is glorious!!!
Go figure, the Republican's that voted for him are not sure what they believe in. Why did they vote across party lines...the same as being the party of "NO", from the party of "YES".

There are pink rabbits and yellow dollars too....
"Ever notice that private corporations lay people off, but the government never does?"

Riverside County (a government) is laying off 10% of workers, that includes fire and police.  So perhaps the federal government doesn't do layoffs (but I have heard they have cut some jobs and plan on cutting more), State and Local most certainly do.
Julie, Palm Desert, CA (Sent Monday, February 23, 2009 1:20 PM)

Thanks Julie. Just looked up Riversside County. Staff cuts are 1% with 150-200 staff losing their jobs. No mention of police or fire. This is called attrition in the corporate world. Just don't hire for a year or so, and that takes care of the budget shortfall.

This as opposed to a place like GM, that lays off 20,000 at a time.

I'll stand by me claim that governments don't lay anyone off.
Of course the GOP Fear Uncertainty and Doubt machine will be all over your first paragraph, and ignore the second.
John Q Public: "Can I please have money I didn't earn!"

Democrats: "YES!"

John Q Public: "And make the 'Rich' pay for it!"

Democrats: "YES!"
You know how I love your polls, First Read, but this little poll actually does say a lot about the number of people who identify themselves as republicans these days.  If 70 percent of republicans do not approve of President Obama, and that 70 percent represents only a fraction of the 24 percent of the country overall that does not approve, then the number of people actually willing to admit they are republicans is pretty darn small.  That's VERY sweet music to my liberal ears.

And even less reason than before as to why anyone should pay any attention to them.
Can't quarrel with Gallup's numbers or Chuck's interpretation. These approval numbers are still excellent. Actually the decline in Republican numbers tells me that the President is making progress on his agenda.  It is not surprising that Conservative Republicans do not like his stimulus bill, his position on Gitmo, his plans for health care, his plans to scalle back in Iraq.  His Republican support may further decline. But his support among independents and Democrats will stay high, well beyond his first hundred days.

Educate yourself BEFORE you spew lies on the "internets" please.

Thank you.

Ahh, but this was greatly increased and rules further relaxed in the '90s under Clinton, and then even more under Bush.

Facts is facts dumb-dumb. Clinton turned the trickle into a raging river. Bush tried to stop the flow, but was turned back by the likes of Schumer and Frank. We see the results.

Selectively cutting-and-pasting isn't helping your cause.
