First 100 days: The Iraq withdrawal

NBC’s Jim Miklaszewski and Courtney Kube reported yesterday, “U.S. military and administration officials tell NBC News that President Obama is expected to announce that more than half of the American troops will be withdrawn from Iraq within 19 months. The plan, expected to be announced later this week, would draw down the number of forces from the current 142,000 to around 50,000.”

More: “Although the plan falls short of Obama's campaign pledge to withdraw all U.S. combat forces from Iraq within 16 months, one senior military official said, ‘It's close.’ The official also points out, however, that the remaining force of 50,000 would still contain a sizeable ‘combat element’ to provide rapid reaction assistance to Iraqi combat forces and force protection for the remaining American troops and U.S. government civilians. The sources say the 19-month timetable was one of three options presented to President Obama for the withdrawal of forces – 16-, 19- and 23-month withdrawal plans. A senior military official said that it was up to President Obama to weigh the risks in withdrawal and ‘the shorter the timetable the greater the risk,’ to U.S. forces and Iraqi security.”

The Washington Post on the troop withdrawal: “Obama has not made a final decision on the matter, but it could come during a trip to give a speech in North Carolina on Friday, the officials said.”

The New York Times: “Mr. Obama’s advisers said they believed they had reached an accommodation that would satisfy both the military and a public eager to get out of Iraq, while relieving the strain on the armed forces and freeing up resources for Afghanistan.”

A Treasury official tells First Read that Secretary Geithner today will announce that first-time homebuyers can start applying for the expanded $8,000 tax credit made available in the stimulus law.

The AP: “President Barack Obama intends to nominate former Washington Gov. Gary Locke to be commerce secretary on Wednesday in his third try to fill the job.”

First Obama said he'd withdraw from Iraq as soon as he got in office, then it was late 2009, early 2010, now in later in 2010. Shades of Vietnam.
50,000 is a population about the size of Sarasota FL, or Battle Creek, MI or Elkhart, IN or Charleston, WV.

That's not a lot is it?

Give me a break.
Any withdrawal is good.  Support our troops---bring 'em home! Unfortunately, there are still 50,000 Americans  in harm's way for a people that doesn't really give a rat's ass about their own freedom, often preferring tyranical mullahs and violence. We need to let those people either sink or swim. Also, Obama may play a shell game by moving troops from the Iraq war zone to the Afghani war zone. At least we're fighting the right people now. Obama has also quietly endorsed imprisonment-forever-without-due-process and extraordinary kidnapping. Obama needs to stick to his principles andhis promises.
President Obama said he would begin withdrawing troops within 16 months. Now he's saying 19 months. He has had more intelligence briefings since becoming POTUS and has to make decisions based on these briefings. I can cut him some slack on this one. I voted for him to make sound decisions and he hasn't shown me yet that he isn't doing that. A 3 month difference isn't big enough deal to quarrel about.
No surprise that it will take longer to extricate ourselves from that idiot war in Iraq that Clueless George got us into while taking his eye off the prize of getting Osama bin Laden and putting Al Qaeda out of existence.  Still Obama will get us out a lot quicker than McNasty would have.
Is he just eating bananas in the oval office or his he getting things he promised done.

This comment is beyond the pale. Obama doesn't eat bananas. He smokes them.

Get it right next time!
Sometimes it is hard to estimate the exact number of troops should be withdrawn or put into a combat situation. Although not exactly as President Obama said in the campaign it comes close enough for now. As things continue to improve with the political solutions in Iraq more and more troops can be withdrawn from there. All we will eventually need is a group to guard the embassy in Baghdad.

Unfortunately many of those slated for Iraq will need to be diverted to Afghanistan/Pakistan to fight the Taliban and Al Qaeda (Remember them? They are the ones that ACTUALLY attacked us).
The left is saying that the Iraq withdrawal is to long and the right is saying it's too quick. The 19 month plan must be just right then. The president said that he would listen to the generals on the ground when it came to withdrawal, even though the goal would be 16 month. I am willing to give Obama an extra 3 months in order to get this right.
Do you have the correct link to the WP article on the first-time homebuyer tax credit?  The current hyperlink links to a WP article on Locke.
While those of us on the LEFT are snarling, "but he said 16 months," we may want to keep in mind that he also said that he would be open to changes as the situation warrants, and he supported a "responsible withdrawal" of troops.  True, this isn't as quickly as some of us wanted (like, yesterday), but it's movement in the right direction.  Besides, we DO need to be concerned about the region destablizing when our troops are gone.  I'd rather he take as much time as he needs to do this right instead of catering to the fringes.

Also, McCain said 100 years in Iraq "would be fine with me."  Let's see: 19 months vs. 100 YEARS.  Hmmm.

"Oh God!"

Something New:
I have thought for a long time that we will end up in Iraq, like we have in South Korea, Japan and Germany. We will be there for a long time. Whne the pottery was broken, we bought the shop.
AHHHHHHHH I hope he goes to Ft. Bragg on Friday and not here to Camp Lejeune... I DETEST that man!
