Gingrich: Socialism vs. free enterprise

From NBC's Mark Murray
WASHINGTON -- A conservative movement that currently finds itself out of power turned its attention here to the man who last led them out of the political wilderness 15 years ago: Newt Gingrich.

The former Republican speaker entered the ballroom here at the Conservative Political Action Conference to Survivor's "Eye of the Tiger," with the packed crowd standing and clapping to the song's beat. And in the first few moment of his remarks, Gingrich immediately criticized the month-old Obama administration.

He chastised Attorney General Eric Holder's recent speech that the U.S. was a nation of cowards when it comes to the issue of race.

"I welcome an opportunity to have a dialogue with you about cowardice anywhere, anytime," he said in comments directed at Holder. Then, turning to President Obama's Tuesday address to Congress and his budget, Gingrich called them "the boldest effort to create a European socialist government we have seen."

He also lambasted Obama for opposing earmarks -- and then tolerating them in the appropriations bill that Congress has drafted.

"I was looking for change we can believe in," he said.

Despite spending the first part of his speech criticizing the Obama administration, Gingrich said opposition wasn't enough to returning to power in future elections; conservatives, he said, also need to come up with positive solutions. Some of his ideas: cutting the capital gains tax to zero and slashing the corporate tax rate.

Even though the Bush administration championed tax cuts at every opportunity, Gingrich linked the former Republican president with Obama to argue how spending had gotten out of control -- among both Democrats and Republicans. "We have a Bush-Obama spending plan that was bipartisan," he said.

Near the end of his speech, Gingrich cast the political debate as between "European socialism" and "American free enterprise"; he railed against the union-backed Employee Free Choice Act, calling it the "greatest threat to freedom in the workplace"; and he encouraged the conservatives in the audience to donate money to the Republican congressional candidate running to replace Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand in New York.

And finally, after referencing Ronald Reagan (again) and the upcoming 2010 and 2012 elections, he concluded his remarks -- this time as Queen's "We will rock you" almost drowned out the applause.

FACT - CHECKING

David Gregory is no Tim Russert in fact he is no Keith Olbermann, David Shuster, Rachel Maddow, Tamron Hall, Norah O’Donnell, Contessa Brewer or even the weather man.

Who man the decision that David Gregory is worth listening to. I now watch ABC on Sundays because the quality of work now produced by Meet the Press is an absolute embarrassment; it's no wonder Obama made his last interview on this show with Tom Brokaw and not this idiot David Gregory.

Was David Gregory all you could find.
Gingrich nails it again. He may be the smartest man in politics today. Too bad he's not black, otherwise he could be President.
Isn't Newt Gingrich gay?? How can he then be with CPAC?
"I welcome an opportunity to have a dialogue with you about cowardice anywhere, anytime,"

yes I imagine he would be an expert on cowardice. Here is his life from Media Matters.

Here's a summary of Gingrich's family life: 1) Gingrich marries his high school teacher, Jackie, who was seven years his senior; 2) Jackie puts Gingrich through college and she works hard to get him elected to the House in 1978 (Gingrich won partly because his campaign claimed that his Democratic opponent would neglect her family if elected -- at that time it was common knowledge that Gingrich was straying); 3) Shortly after being elected, Gingrich separated from his wife -- announcing the separation in the hospital room where Jackie was recovering from cancer surgery (the divorce was final in 1981); Jackie Gingrich and her children had to depend on alms from her church because Gingrich didn't pay any child support; 3) Six months after the divorce, Gingrich, then 38, married Marianne Ginther, 30; 4) "In May 1999, however, Gingrich [55] called Marianne [48] at her mother's home. After wishing the 84-year-old matriarch happy birthday, he told Marianne that he wanted a divorce." This was eight months after Marianne was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis; 5) In 2000, Gingrich, 57, married ex-congressional aide Callista Bisek, 34, with whom he was having a relationship while married to Marianne.

From WashingtonMonthly:

‘…IS THIS 'BEYOND CUTTING-EDGE'?.... Following up on Hilzoy's item from earlier, I want to offer the Republican Party some simple and friendly advice: stop trying so hard to be cool. It's backfiring.

The catalyst for all of this is Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.) telling RNC Chairman Michael Steele last night, "Michael Steele! You be da man! You be da man."

Of course, this followed Steele's speech to the CPAC banquet, during which he told the far-right crowd:

"What a house tonight. Are there any conservatives in the house tonight?"

"Tonight we tell the American people: We know, in the past, that we did wrong. My bad."

"Young people in the house stand up! Young people in the house stand up!"

This comes a day after Steele told ABC News that he sends "some slum love out to my buddy, Gov. Bobby Jindal." Steele added that Jindal is "doing a friggin' awesome job in his state."

We've heard about "bling, bling." We've been promised a Republican Party that's "off the hook." We've been told the GOP will mount a comeback "with the Twittering." We've seen candidates for the RNC chairmanship argue over who has more Facebook friends. The Republican Party, rumor has it, is going to go "beyond cutting edge."…’

Gingrich is correct. Obama is looking to make the US a socialist country. That is not the American way. It's actually quite unpatriotic.

I think what they saw was a one-eyed tiger and it was leaving not entering.
NEWT !!!

Quotes:

"We had oral sex. He prefers that modus operandi because then he can say, 'I never slept with her.'" - Anne Manning (who was also married at the time.)

"We would have won in 1974 if we could have kept him out of the office, screwing her [a young volunteer] on the desk." - Dot Crews, his campaign scheduler at the time

[In the book] "Men Who Hate Women and the Women Who Love Them", [I] "found frightening pieces that related to my own life." - Newt.

"I think you can write a psychological profile of me that says I found a way to immerse my insecurities in a cause large enough to justify whatever I wanted it to" - Newt, speaking to Gail Sheehy.

"She isn't young enough or pretty enough to be the President's wife." - Newt, on his first wife.

Freddy Mercury must be rolling over in his grave.

If the Republicans can show me a plan for "leveling the playing field" for all Americans - with children living in trailer parks in the South and families living on Indian reservations having the same opportunities as children growing up in Boston's Beacon Hill and New York's Upper East Side - then maybe I'll start to listen to them.

Otherwise, all the talk is just hot air.
I think Obamanation said he'd fix the economy.

Newt's NEW IDEA  Christian adultery !!

Adultery:
Sex on the Desk - Oral Sex is More Easily Denied
Several newspapers are now reporting that Newt Gingrich is dating and basically living with Callista Bisek, a "willowy blond Congressional aide 23 years his junior." Biske, 33, has been spending nights at Gingrich's apartment near the Capitol and has her own key. In an amazing act of hypocrisy, Gingrich was apparently dating Bisek all during Clinton-Lewinsky adultery scandal, even as he proclaimed family values and bitterly criticized the President for his adultery.

Reporters and other Washington insiders have known about this relationship since 1994, even before Gingrich became Speaker of the House, but did not have any solid proof to report. In 1995, Vanity Fair magazine described Bisek as Gingrich's "frequent breakfast companion." Gingrich was married to Marianne Gingrich during all of that time, and just filed for divorce in August 1999.

Newt is apparently trying to create a new hybrid form, Christian adultery. According to MSNBC, Bisek sings in the National Shrine Choir, and Newt would often wait for her at the Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, listening to her sing while he read the Bible.

Gingrich is right.

MSierra confirms it every day.

If that is the case we had better start nuking now.  Turn the whole damn place into a radioactive playground.    No you have to understand what they hate about us then work with it.  If that does not work the good news is radioactive oil will still drive our cars.
Gingrich is one scary guy.  The one-eyed man in the land of the blind.  He will try to create a debate between European socialism and American free enterprise. But this too is political nonsense.  He does not want to face the facts that American would not be taking a stake in the banks if there had been regulations to prevent the bankers greed.  He does not want to face the facts that GM management 1)could not compete with Japanese comment to quality 2) did not look to the future for electric cars. Newt will try these political arguments, but he now lives in a very small tent...and has no ideas how to make it inclusive or bigger.
To Newt: You can whip-up the conservatives in the room, but the moderate Americans are not buying what you are selling. It will take a long time to forget what Bush 43 has done to us.

GOPAC sleaze:
Taxpayer subsidies for his partisan campaign course.

Newt in his poltical career was the king of using tax-payer subsidized donations for his personal and political purposes. He stooped so low as to hijack not one but two charities for poor inner city kids and use their donations for his personal goals.
GOPAC, Newt's longtime political action committee, was the centerpiece of a complex network of non-profit, and mostly tax exempt organizations that Newt has used to support himself and other conservative candidates. In an act of incredible hypocrisy, this crusader against taxes obtained taxpayer subsidies for his personal and political goals, by misusuing these tax-exempt groups.

For example, one GOPAC document said that its goal for the 1990s was "to both create and disseminate the doctrine of a majority Republican party." In another GOPAC document, titled "Key Factors in a House GOP Majority," Gingrich wrote "It is more powerful and more effective to develop a reform movement parallel to the official Republican party", instead of using the party structure, because it would get more attention and be more credible. Shortly thereafter, GOPAC paid for a television program promoting a "grassroots" movement to reform government; publicly they claimed it was nonpartisan, but private internal documents made its partisan goals clear.

After it got expensive, Gingrich transferred the program to the "Abraham Lincoln Opportunity Foundation," a tax-exempt group controlled by a GOPAC official named Bo Callaway. It had been set up years earlier to help inner city kids, which is why it was tax exempt. The group spent $260,000 on the television program in 1990. That same year, Newt started another tax-exempt group that paid poor students for reading books. He bragged of this in many a political speech. But after the first two years, most of this foundation's money went to Mel Steely, a former Gingrich aide who is now Newt's official biographer.

The best known effort was a college course (titled "Renewing American Civilization") at a third-rate college that Gingrich nakedly used to recruit and organize conservative candidates, and to feed them his carefully constructed ideology and political slogans.

Of course, using tax-exempt educational or charitable donations for partisan purposes is illegal, and several ethics complaints were filed against Gingrich. He agreed to pay a $300,000 fine for misleading the committee during the investigation, and in the process dodged conviction on the actual charges through a combination of finessing some legal definitions, sheer self-confidence and raw political power (as Speaker of the House at the time of the complaints, he appointed the ethics committee. Furthermore, GOPAC had one ethics committee member on its roster last session, and gave money to another.)

The Ethics Committee dropped its final charges against Gingrich not long before he resigned as speaker, despite finding that Gingrich had in fact violated one rule by repeatedly using a political consultant paid by GOPAC to develop the Republican political agenda, because there was no evidence he was continuing to do so.

The IRS also started an investigation of one group, the Progress and Freedom Foundation, for violating its tax-exempt status by donating to Gingrich's college course. In the investigation, the special counsel found that these activities were "substantially motivated by partisan political goals." The IRS eventually overruled him, and found that the course "was educational and never favored or opposed a candidate for public office.'' It said the foundation ``did not intervene on behalf of candidates of the Republican Party merely by promoting'' themes in the course. This extremely narrow reading of the law basically said "so what if he used the course to recruit, organize and groom candidates; as long as they didn't say 'Vote for Jones', it wasn't partisan." Despite what Gingrich fans argue, this hardly proves his innocence. The IRS has chickened out before in political cases, notably letting the Church of Scientology completely off the hook in its investigation of that group.
Here, here!

Big government forces out private money!

Big government inhibits ambition!

Big government shunts comepetition!

Big government eliminates choice within the econmoy!

Worst of all, Big government restricts Liberty!

Give Me Liberty, Or Give Me Death!
Gotta love that one of the greatest heroes of the conservative movement is almost universally recognized outside their little club as cruel, calculating, manipulative, lying, and generally beneath contempt.  They'll go far with leadership like Newt.
Gingrich might be the man we need. Newt, what a name.
Certainly no worse than Barack Hussein Obama.

And his speech ended with "We Will Rock You" by Queen. I wonder if they got permission for that.
They had their time in the sun, now its ours! I believe Pres. Obama will set us in the right direction. God only knows the Republicans did not shine then and oh boy they sure are not now!!! What is with Steel?
Free market economics and laizze-faire is the surest way to insure that we maintain and are able to expand Liberty!
FR,,,,The time has come for management to step in and stop this. You now are comparing Newt to Moses.Well if that is so did Moses dump his wife while she was recovering from cancer?Of coarse he would have something to say about Holders Comment, after all Newt is a card carrying Klansmen,he as other neo-cons are afraid of the black man, they are scared of the dark. They hide behind there racist roots born in un=educated southerners.I'm glad they have re-runs like Newt to parade out for there spew. Was he and the rest hooded,or hoodless. Can't wait for survivor and Queen to tell these clowns to stop using there music.
Perhaps the GOP is actually the Greatly Out-of-Touch Party?  Since they have no clue what they stand for or where they go from here or even how they got here, let's go back to 15 years ago and see if anyone remembers this old song...

Times have changed.  The people have changed.  It's time to grow up GOP and try coming up with new ideas.  The old ones just don't work anymore.

This country really needs a three party system to keep any one from too much power, but at least keep two parties.  You are doing your best to self-destruct and that is not good for anyone.
No where man
If Newt wants to see free market enterprise at work, all he needs to do is study the San Francisco gold rush. It happen when there were no market rules or oversight. Sure, people got rich, but the rich prospered off the backs of the miners. It was a boon to Bust scenario.
Gingrich cast the political debate as between "European socialism" and "American free enterprise"

Food for thought.
Theoretical arguments aside, European socialism seems to be working out better in the real world than free enterprise.  Unrequlated free enterprise seems to lead to the wholesale fleecing and economic enslavement of people.  Weren't company towns and company stores the result of unfettered capitalism and big business monopolies?  Things were pretty good here pre Ronald Reagan before enterprise got a little too free.
Newt. There is a reason why he has no public position at this time and why he quit as Speaker of The House, He is a lying little weasel who abandon his sick wife. Sound familar? Mr.Magoo has the same endearing qualities. Did I say trophy wife? Eye of the Tiger you say. More like butt of the lizard.
With enough luck "Uncle Milty" (Friedman) will spin in his grave until he's dust
One would expect nothing less than what Mr. G. spouted at a group in total agreement with him and each other. In the broad spectrum and the real world the former Speaker may have a more difficult time convincing people, at least those paying attention, that we are anywhere near European Socialism and that tax cuts are the panicea to all that ails us. When Gingrich shut down the government due to his disagreement with President Clinton on a budget because he didn't get his way we know that Gingrich lost the fight. This contributed to a budget surplus at the end of the Clinton Administration. So I wouldn't count much on what the Newt has to say regarding the economy. He didn't know much then and he obviously doesn't know any more now.

It was Gingrich's own party that virtually expelled him from the speaker's chair because he lost to Clinton but to save face and not be a mere Congressman instead of Speaker he resigned.

I don't put much stock in his speech it is like speaking to the choir. They all agree and holler amen at just the right places.
""I welcome an opportunity to have a dialogue with you about cowardice anywhere, anytime,"

How about the cancer ward where you abandoned your wife, you filthy piece of distended rectum?
Old ideas, this is a new day!
Nobody cares what you repubs think !!!!!!!!
You all are a bunch of dopes, and everybody knows it.
Go away and hide.
The fascists don't like Barack, I'm shocked. It's fitting that they closed with Queen though, considering their recent problems with Larry Craig and Mark Foley.
It would be the greatest threat to freedom in the workplace, if the "Employee Free Choice Act" is not allowed. Jobs will be lost, insurance will not be available, etc. So it would good if Newt allows the American people and worker to come together as one to avoid suffering. And that is not socialism.

After what Obama has spent in a few weeks, there is no way he can be called or considered "responsible".

Would you take out additional credit cards if you were alreay buried in debt at your house? Would you try to spend more than you have, even if it wasn't absolutely necessary? If your Mom or Dad did it and told you that you'd be paying for it, well, you might get a bit upset, like many young people are beginning to.

No, Obama is a lot of things, but responsible is not one of them.
===============================================
Marcus D., Chicago
No. I would not; if my parents did it. First of all, my parents have always given rational reasons for their actions; just like our President does.
Yes, it true. Debt is never a good thing; but history is on our side here. We've carried a lot more debt than this in the past and survived. World investors are still flocking to buy U.S. bonds despite, inflation; they're getting slightly negative interest rates, which mean they're effectively paying us to use their money. To be that is an indication there is faith in our economy. President Obama has it and so do I, as well as other American according to the polls, and he  is very bright, catches on quick, and has brilliant minds around him.
Of course there are other factors, but I'll save the space for other posters.

Our President’s ideas are as a straight and to the point as an arrow; but to the obstructionist, Republicans their target is to score a miss.

Republican’s just can’t get it. Marcus you and your posse are in error.

Cowardice? How can he stand there and debate on cowardice? This is the same man who was preaching from the pulpit to impeach Clinton on perjury (infidelity) charges while he was doing the very same thing at the exact same time. I'm sorry, but all of the mightier than thou has been proven to be hypocrites. No credibility at all.
When you place yourself higher than everyone else you have farther to fall.
Since the Republicans have lost and lost big, they have been acting extremely surly.  They cannot or refuse learn why they are out of favor.  Me thinks they are mental midgets incapable of learning or even doing the math about any issue.

I know many who are totally ignorant about the long history behind the crisis in the Middle East (it started back in the days of The Crusades and the Inquistion)
Mr. Gingrich should know that Europe is a continent, with many countries and many different types of government.  Exactly which one is it that he objects to?  If he had the courage to explain that, people could respond appropriately.  Perhaps Mr. Gingrich could also explain the difference between Christianity and socialism.
Obama is change that you CAN'T believe in. In fact, what the hell is this crazed lunatic doing in office?

Oh yeah, the gullibles put him in there, hoping to move up the ladder with free monies from the rich and upper middle class.

Obama forgot the trickle down effect. He's gonna cost more jobs and strife than any one person since ... I can't print it. I know the moderator won't allow it.
I'm sure Freddie Mercury is rolling over in his grave considering that this group of people would never give someone with his lifestyle a shot at equality. (yes i know he swung both ways)

And I love how this branding is taking place.  Free enterprise in the GOP mindset is "free to screw over your neighbor if he'll let you" or "free to pay the lowest wage possible to those who don't have the ability to negotiate" or "free to set up offshore accounts to dodge those pesky taxes"...

why don't you tell the investors that got scammed by madoff "buyer beware" after they were told by the SEC that there was "nobody better".

It's going to take more than rallying the miniscule troops you have to recover...one must realize that we've had a number of political parties of the past.  The way things are going, we'll see the GOP go the way of the whigs

Oh Newt...  Again with your tired, false dichotomy?  As if there is any such thing as pure socialism or pure capitalism in this country, or ever was...  WE HAVE A MIXED ECONOMY!  If anything, enterprise has been a little too "free" these past several years, and we're all paying for it.  I've never met a Republican who is remotely capable of acknowledging nuance or forming a nuanced opinion.  In fact, nuance aside, I've never met a working-class Republican who can adequately explain how their interests were ever served by Republicans.  The modern conservative movement is a joke, which is why they have jokes (like Gingrich and Bachmann) as their mouthpieces.  It all leads me to the conclusion that Joe the Plumber is perfectly suited (perhaps even over-qualified) to join the ranks of House Republicans.
Marcus D., Chicago
No. I would not; if parents did it. First of all, my parents have always given rational reasons for their actions; just like same as our President does.
President Obama has it and so do I, as well as other American according to the polls, and he very bright, catches on quick, and has brilliant minds around him.
Ronald Reagan came into office with a national debt of less than $1 trillion. Mostly by cutting taxes on the rich, he grew that debt to $2.6 trillion. Both Bushs did the same; so that was proven to be wrong.
Our President’s ideas are as a straight and to the point as an arrow; but to the obstructionist, Republicans their target is to score a miss.

Republican’s just can’t get it. Marcus you and your posse are in error.

"And finally, after referencing Ronald Reagan "

Ahhh, yes, the traitor that started the class war with his "piss on you" economics; supplied right wing death squads; made a deal with the Iranian terrorists to keep the embassy staff prisoners until his half-witted followers saw to his election - great guy. Should exhumed and hung.
Nobody cares what you repubs think !!!!!!!!
You all are a bunch of dopes, and everybody knows it.
Go away and hide.
Note to Newt: The capital gains tax currently IS zero - as there have been NO CAPITAL GAINS available to TAX (thanks to repugs)!!!

Also please note: Since Obama's inaugeration, Ronald Reagan is finally in his resting place - so get over it!
This speech is another fine example of the morass the "pubs" continue to wallow in.  Instead of siezing the opportunity to dialogue about race in an intellectual way, Newt chose to take the low road and go after the "button pusher" word - cowardice.  Same old, same old.

In addition, before badmouthing the European system of business, he might want to take note of how well they were doing compared to us until our banking system dumped all over them.
Aonther dinosaur, Reaganism is over and will never be ressurected. The country is just there anymore and they are still spouting the same policies that got us into the mess we are in. If the administration creates jobs like the Clinton one did (22 million) there will be plenty of revenue to paid for every program and still make a down payment on the rising debt. Furthermore, there will also be great savings in becoming energy efficient as a nation and save a ton of money by getting out of the God awful war that should never been waged. We will definitely have to continue fighting terorism and paying the price to be safe but we cannot return to the foolishness of all for one and none for all. We need to become a nation of shared ability and prosperity so that all can have a piece of the pie as long as each does his part to share in it.
I think Obamanation said he'd fix the economy.
