Romney, full-throated conservative

From NBC's Mark Murray
WASHINGTON -- At the beginning of the 2008 presidential contest, conservatives were suspicious about Mitt Romney. He had supported abortion rights, had once championed embryonic stem-cell research, and had even voted for Paul Tsongas in the 1992 Democratic primary.

But by the end of the GOP primary season, more and more conservatives had embraced the former Massachusetts governor. In fact, when he withdrew from the primary race at last year's Conservative Political Action Conference, he did so to loud gasps and shouts of "No!"

Well, Romney today returned to same conference where he ended his '08 presidential bid. And he did so to a thunderous applause.

When he addressed the confab here, he wasn't the moderate governor from a Northeast state. Rather, he was a full-throated conservative. He whacked the spending from the month-old Obama administration. "America voted for change," he said. "America did not vote for a boat-load of new government spending programs."

On his governing philosophy: "Conservative principles are absolutely essential to keeping America strong."

On Iraq: "It is in spite of Barack Obama's stance on Iraq -- not because of it -- that American troops are coming home to victory."

"full-throated" is a political term that needs to fall by the wayside.

Also, I don't trust Romney (he appealed to me for awhile), imaging that?
Romney and those other cons would be hilarious if they weren't so pitiful. Let them rant. The more they do the sillier they look.

Just remember that in today's Internet world so much can be recorded and saved for later. When they are crowing about how good things are because of their conservative views keeping spending down from the mean ol' nasty Socialists people will simply laugh to themselves and shake their heads at how sad they all will look. People will know that the 8+ years the cons had control headed us to where we are today and that it is Obama and the Democrats (liberals, if you like) that actually got the country back on a sound footing. New regulations will keep it that way.

Just like in the early part of the last Century Republicans Harding, Coolidge and Hoover had policies, conservative policies that were all for the robber barons, that helped cause the great depression. Now we see similar things happening. The New Deal of FDR and the policies of President Obama will, once again, save this nation from financial collapse and ruin through policies geared toward the middle class instead of the uberrich.
The Gingrich thread is hilarious! Must be Friday.
David Gregory is no Tim Russert and that is why Meet the Press is no longer worth watching. I think David Shuster would have been worth taking over this spot at least he doesn’t work off of Republican talking points.

Shuster????Are you ignorant? Shuster is one of the biggest partisans on MSNBC besides Maddow, Olberman, Matthews. 3 or commentators, 1 is a journalist but a biased one.

***********************

Your dislike for is for no other reason than the fact that he calls out the republicans for their lies. And the fact that you think this i is unfair makes you the ignorant one. David Gregory maybe ok with you but your in the minority along with the rest of your obtrustionist party. David Gregory was a poor example to replace Tim Russert a very poor example. NBC miss the mark on that one.
Mitt Romney the Mechanic Man
The Republicans are the most cry baby, sore losers I ever seen. Instead of being good Americans and Bipartisan to help President Obama and his administration solve our problems they are doing all they can to help America fail. Which side are they on? Al-Qaida? Americans are not stupid, we can see through their bullcrap and that's why they lost and will keep losing unless they care for the America people first.
The Dow is off 19.5% for the year, its worst two-month start on record; the S&P is off 18.6%, its worst two-month start since 1933.

The Dow finished the day down 119 points, or 1.7%, to 7,063, its lowest close since May 1997.

Thank goodness for President Obama.

Romney will either be the 2012 sacrificial lamb like McCain was, or he will be a serious contender.  The stage is now set and it's called "the economy".

For the sake of my pocketbook, I hope he's the sacrificial lamb.

So far, Obama is 100% of what I expected.  Not one single deviation.
On a completely random note:

The rich do not have enough money to pay for the stimulus and the budget.  Be prepared for reinstatement of higher tax rates on moderate and lower incomes, sometime.

Max Baucus is already targeting employer plans that allow tax deferral on medical premiums paid by employees through payroll deductions.
Another Conservative following other sheep wandering aimlessly destined to fall off a very high cliff. One less good-for-nothing Republican, there are many more. Have a nice fall!
Pete... Obama was very clear.. Americans will have to make sacrifices. It is going to take trillions to fix 8 years of Bush disastrous policies, no way around it, sorry. I guess anyone who were fool enough to vote for Bush got what they asked for ! that will teach them ! Never, ever vote for the republican party !

elisabeth schneider, France

Now that's what I'm talking about. Thank you!

Don't forget to Blame Your Bush, each and every day!

Feb 27 2009, Did you Blame Your Bush today?

Keep the Bush Alive! I love it!

(What else can you say??? Makes Dem's look weak)
If Obama keeps spending like there's no tomorrow, Romney will win in 2012 in a landslide.
Can you imagine where the Stock Market and Economy would be if Obamanation had not taken out the big credit loans for all of us?

One thing is clear.......

The youth who were behind Obamanation are starting to realize what he is doing to their future and they are not liking the way he is crippling them.

Maybe their disgust will finally lead to the formation of a strong third party option to finally break the backs of the Demo and Repub juggernauts that continue to flap their traps and screw our nation.

Enough is enough. Blaming each other for all the problems. Two kids on the playground. Really Silly.

The fact that Conservatives have anything to do with Romney-is a clear statement as to their desperation...They would be better off with nobody....being patient-and someone will emerge..
Never trusted him, can't imagine I ever will.
John McCain and George Bush were not what the republican party needed. Both were good men, but neither had the power to accomplish much. Obama needs all the help he can get and I am willing to lend him my support. However, the man this country really needs is Mitt Romney. Go Governor!
My dear Richard (from a previous thread) ~

I was thinking of conceding the argument, if only to return the favor of the “small pleasure,” but your entire last post proves my point.  The specific events you point to occurred either around the 2006 elections or afterward, when the political pressure on Bush was inescapable. And of course Bush said there would be responsible withdrawal when the time was right; what else would you expect him to say?  However, at the time that al-Maliki made HIS statements about a timeline, he was reacting to Obama’s timeline.  In fact, the only timeline on the table was Obama’s.  Both Bush and McCain were still taking the position that a specific timetable for withdrawal was not reasonable. Obama clearly drove that bus, however you may want to spin it.

As for the “O,” Richard, it’s all in the mind … all in the mind.

And thanks.  I needed that.  ;)

Conservative Principles? We just saw 8 years of those, incompetence, deceipt, and failure. Romney exemplifies this, along with the rest of the pathetic GOP "leaders"
Romney proved again today that Palin and Huckabee can't compete with him in 2012. He not only articulates conservatism better than they do, but he has the substance, intellect and record of success in both business and government to inspire the confidence of the American people. Neither Palin or Huck come close to Romney's competence.
Romney is a man of strong principles--until it appears that republican voters disagree.  Then he is a man of shifting principles.  He keeps shifting until he finds what his party's constituents want to hear and then he is a "full-throated" conservative or centrist or whatever you want him to be.  How many times has this clown changed with the political winds?
Mitt is still so full of sh**...he stood silently by while the republicans spent us into deficits and debt until they were kicked out in 2006 and then all of the sudden he like many others turn back into so called conservatives...I wouldn't trust republicans with my used rubbers let alone our nation
Lets talk about the Iraq war
Romney's claims (and those of other Republicans) that somehow the economy is all Obama's and the Democrats' fault and any success in Iraq is, of course, Bush's and the Republicans' doing - would be laughable because it is so completely and utterly ridiculous and devoid of any kind of logic whatsoever - It would be laughable were it not for the fact that so many people will actually accept this rewritten version of history as fact.

I think it's becoming pretty obvious why the Republicans / Conservatives (and yes, despite what they would like to claim after the last 8 years - most conservatives are Republicans and vice-versa) have become so anti-intellectual in their rhetoric. They get into trouble when people start thinking.
He has no shame, has he?
Still a mormon, never to be accepted by the evangelicals.
I think it is about time Romney became "full-throated" or whatever the equivelant venacular is.  It is time for all of us to be clear where we stand.
Mitt did one good thing while gov. of MA - mandatory health insurance.
Othewise, he was a mean and vindictive seeker of national office who does whatever he can to achieve his goal. A typical Republican, he has no real policy for the governance of our country other than to cut taxes on the rich and rely on unregulated capitalism -exactly what got us into the deprression we're in now.
You can't trust Mormons any farther than you can throw their magic underwear. Romney is also a used car salesman. If the Republicans are to succeed as a political party they need to keep away from cultists like Romney, bigots like Boehner and Lindsey G., brain dead nerds like Cantor, and anything having to do with the Bush dictatorship. The left and the right need to either merge or go AWAY. I have seen both moderate Republicans and Democrats in my lifetime and it's a winning combination for us, the people of the United States. The Religious Right and the Bra Burning Left need to fade away.
"Full Throttle" is more like it.

Mitt's the Man in 2012.....He will take down the Fist Bump and Idiot Joe
The conservatives have discovered that their choices for 2012 are coming down to a couple of loonies like Sarah Palin or Michael Steele.  I guess if I were in their shoes I would pretend Romney was a conservative too!
Romney is the most politically expedient of the political expedients.  He truly says whatever the moment or in this case, the movement, calls for.  Was there ever a more ambitious and less principled man or woman of either party?
Right on Romney !!  He's our man!  Romney + Palin (unleashed) = Victory
As a Mormon and a former conservative I am disappointed with Mitt Romney.  If he truly understood that this country is progressing (with or without the republican party) then he would still be the same person he was as the Massachusetts governor.

Instead, he's given up his identity as an honest, progressive conservative for the mantle of the republican party.  A party of fear-mongers, bigots, and sexists. It is that shining example of Mitt Romney's bad judgment that prevents me from ever voting for him.
Our Nation at present facing the worst terrorists are Republicans, they proved it and we, the Humans should understand and eliminate them, otherwise we will be their slaves for ever.
Why does this greasy Uber-rich snob even matter?
Romney tried to run away from his record last year.  The people were not fooled.  But my favorite part of his campaign was "Who let the dogs out".  The current strategy of hip hop Republicans is reminiscent and equally tone deaf.
The Consevative "Con-Man." Also known as "Rip-Off" Romney has no new plans for our nation to move forward productively. He is still from the party of "NO!!" For helping 95% of Americans succeed economically. He is very much full-throated for helping the very rich, and large corporations get richer. Now that is just scary America! The way forward America does not include political "pukes" like rip-off Romney from "CRAP-PAC." His continued "spewing" of his political GOP pollution all over America will solve nothing!
Correct me if I am wrong but wasn't it Rep. Ron Paul that filled the CPAC auditorium to a capacity crowd for his speech at around 4pm Friday? anyone watching on CNN or C-span could see it. Why is there absolutely no mention of Congressman Paul at CPAC by MSNBC, what the heck is going on here?
BLAh BLAH BLAH
Big Gov, Taxes, anything else?????

He's intelligent..I dont't understand his lack of knowledge in how to spell P-A-N-D-E-R.
Mark in Dallas (from an earlier post)

There's a big difference in "wanting" Pelosi or Obama to choke on a chicken bone and "not really caring" if they do.

Tzalaran:

Thank you for your lengthy reply.
We won't see eye to eye on many issues but it seems that we have an understanding of why. I appreciate your point of view.

Palomino
". . .coming home to victory"  seems a bit weird.  What did we win?  Who did we defeat?  What was the final score?

Romney is a multi-millionaire who lives lavishly in multiple homes around the world while seemingly contributing very little to the greater good of society. We need leaders who practice an unselfish and giving life.

The Republican party will suffer until they realize we all share this world and it's responsibilities. Most Republicans seem to be believe, deep down, in "everyman for himself, unless it benefits me".
Yea, we have seen how conservative principles have kept america strong, worst recession in our life time, 2 wars that have weakened our military, and cause us problems overseas.  Bullies don't make us strong, they weaken us as a country.  America did vote for change, and President Obama is implementing those things he campaigned on, conservatives just don't get it, they did not learn anything from this last election.  Finally we are getting something done with a great president, and congress is actually getting things done for the people of america.  They have been very productive, and all I see from conservative republicans is Obstruction and Ridicule, with nothing constructive to say or do.
He is the biggest phony in politics today.
Romney is a political chameleon with no regard for his actual principles - his money and his ever-changing philosophys won't win elections.  He couldn't buy the nomination the last time around, so I guess this time he's trying bogus "full-throated conservatism".  Boy, looking at the line up of hopefuls and the speakers at the CPAC comedyfest, the gop is in really sorry shape.  Maybe if they took a step back and looked at their principles and ideology, rather than trying to run yet another PR campaign (ie. Steeles "hip hop" off the hook stand) they'd be better off.
So the point of this post is that Mitt Romney is a hypocritical shape-shifting hack? We all knew that, even the lunatic fringers. Why is this news?
White speak with forked tongue.

Iraq was a HUGE spending boondoggle, and the conservatives couldn't get there fast enough - then, to ice the cake, it made is weaker, not stronger, so quit lying to us, Grand Old Pimps - it's how you got thrown out of office.
I believe the Republican Party has lost its way and has simply become the party of puppets who irresponsibly patronize and placate a few who pull the strings and then boldly they just give the majority an abundance of subterfuge to hide and rationalize the total neglect and to manipulate public opinion.  There seems no doubt that anyone who is capable of being unbiased and objective would readily recognize the belligerent and totally arrogant gross dishonesty of the last eight years and which actually continues in the Party's current unified and stubborn obstructionist efforts, all without ever offering any solutions or conscience.  Some may wish to ignore the self-indulgent behavior, which is rationalized as being 'conservatism' and concentrates strictly on money, as they feel it actually benefits them and to them, without even dwelling on all of the drastic and significant problems created by this behavior, I emphatically ask the following questions.  Who of us really believes the current Republican Party would ever turn against their powerful and influential patrons and:  Establish the regulations and enforcements needed to check the abuse on Wall Street?; Establish the oversight and control necessary to check the abusive run-away greed, dishonesty and self-indulgence in the financial sector?; Interject to check the run away costs in the medical field and thereby cut Medicare, Insurance and individual expenses?;  Establish the real controls and enforcements needed with polluting industries to check Global Warming and environmental degradation?;  Do anything to discourage the exportation of American jobs and taxes?;  Do the necessary spending to turn around our drastically decaying infrastructure?;  Raise taxes on the very wealthy and close corporate tax loop holes to equitably increase revenue?; Have any real concern for America's lagging educational performance?; Do away with the drastic unproductive government spending established by the Bush administration that favored Special Interests and a select few?; Be transparent, honest and open to sincere bipartisanship in complete contrast to the last eight years?; and more, all to turn things around, benefit the people and avoid the catastrophe we would be heading for when continuing with more of the same?.  If, like me, you see with clarity that the current Republican Party is not apt to do any of that and you really seek the return of a conscience driven and responsible Republican Party, you then recognize that, as voters, we need to completely reject their current behavior and encourage needed drastic change.
A year ago at this time, Romney and Obama were running for their respective party's nomination for president.

Obama survived a spirited challenge from Hillary Clinton and went on to become our "Commander in Chief".

How did things work out for Romney?

Enough said...
