First thoughts: Enter Kathleen Sebelius

*** Enter Kathleen Sebelius: The tone of Obama’s health-care week gets set today when the president formally introduces his second choice for HHS secretary: Kansas Gov. Kathleen Sebelius. Expect Obama to talk about her ability to work across party lines (she has a Republican lieutenant governor (CLARIFICATION: Sebelius' lieutenant governor was a Republican, but switched parties in 2006 to run as a Democrat), and her husband’s father was a Republican congressman), as well as her experience dealing with state health-care issues. But what's going to matter most? Her relationship with one man: Finance Committee Chair Max Baucus, who is going to be the single-most important person on the Hill in crafting any health-care legislation. For those wondering if there will still be a desk at the White House for Sebelius -- a la the Daschle arrangement -- don't bet on it. There are a lot of players in the White House who are going to be involved in the details of health care, including Rahm Emanuel (who will get a lot of back channel advice from the non-Hollywood brother); Peter Orszag (who has set the table for health care as a budget crisis); and Larry Summers (whose shop wasn't thrilled with giving up health care to Daschle in the first place). Also, as we’ve written before, a sidebar story to Sebelius' confirmation will be a heated debate over abortion. Look for the pro-life community to start test-driving some of its abortion messages on this confirmation hearing as a prelude to the fight over Obama’s first SCOTUS nomination.

*** The White House gets its sea legs: We shouldn't let last week go without acknowledging how well the Obama White House dominated the messaging of each and every day last week, and also stayed on its chosen message. No outside event disrupted the administration’s day-to-day goals last week -- the fiscal responsibility summit on Monday, the address to Congress on Tuesday, the budget on Thursday, and the Iraq pullout announcement on Friday. It was an impressive feat for those who admire the ability of any political shop to walk and chew gum at the same time. The White House, though, is not trying to be nearly as dominant with its message events this week, given that one issue will dominate more than any other: health care.

*** The budget battle: Meanwhile, the initial battle lines over the president's budget seem to be drawn. It started with Obama’s radio address on Saturday, when he said: "I know these steps won't sit well with the special interests and the lobbyists who are invested in the old way of doing business, and I know they're gearing up for a fight as we speak. My message to them is this: So am I." For their part, Republicans want to define everything Obama is doing through big-government prism. By the way, Rahm Emanuel admitted that Obama will sign the omnibus bill unhappily -- because of the earmarks in it -- but apparently warned Congress not to do it again.

*** The straw-man battle: The two parties seem to be engaged in an interesting competition. The Obama White House and Democrats want to define the Republican Party through Rush Limbaugh -- from paid advertising (via the labor-funded Americans United) to Rahm Emanuel, who did his best on Sunday to "honor" Limbaugh's intellectual leadership of the GOP. Meanwhile, the GOP talking point over the weekend was directed at the president's budget, which Republicans defined as the return of big government and the biggest wealth transfer attempt since LBJ or FDR. (As the New York Times’ Mark Leibovich also noted, Republicans and conservatives have increasingly compared Obama’s actions to socialism and communism. Talk about hyperbole.) Obviously, these straw-men arguments are used as a way to hammer home a message. But who is having more luck right now? Well, it's early, but clearly the White House is ecstatic by how its Limbaugh gambit is working. The talk-show host appeared to have taken the bait by giving the concluding remarks at CPAC. Are any Republicans nervous about having Limbaugh becoming the face of the GOP? RNC chair Michael Steele tried to dismiss Limbaugh over the weekend as nothing more than an "entertainer." We can't wait to hear what Rush thinks of THAT description.

Video: Rush Limbaugh offers his views at CPAC on how Northern Trust managed bailout funds.

*** Mitt’s win: By the way, Mitt Romney finished first in the CPAC presidential-preference straw poll -- his third-straight CPAC victory. Bobby Jindal came in second; Ron Paul and Sarah Palin tied for third; and Newt Gingrich was next, followed by Mike Huckabee. Riddle us this, though: Why does the Romney victory not seem to have a lot of buzz?

*** Focus on the evangelical movement: James Dobson’s resignation as head of Focus on the Family was yet another reminder of the aging leadership of the evangelical movement. Pat Robertson and Dobson are now both semi-retired and in their 70s. Jerry Falwell's recent death also left a bully-pulpit vacancy. So who speaks for this very important constituency group? Is it Tony Perkins? Huckabee? Sarah Palin? Rick Warren? There's no go-to person right now. We've always wondered what would have happened had Huckabee chosen to stay in the religious side of the evangelical movement rather than move into elective politics. Our guess: He'd be the go-to voice of the movement. He still may be, but he clearly has the presidential bug to get out of his system. In the meantime, all the names above will have some say over the next few years.

*** A diplomatic answer: Was there a more fascinating moment over the weekend than watching Defense Secretary Robert Gates answer David Gregory's question comparing working for Obama and Bush? First, Gates’ silence was, well, deafening. It took him a while to formulate his answer. He finally went the "analytical" route with Obama, which only plays into the stereotype some have for Dubya “I think that … probably President Obama is, is somewhat more analytical, and, and, he makes sure he hears from everybody in the room on an issue,” he said. Gates' response should keep liberal columnists in business for the next few days. Given the difficult question to answer, we admire Gates’ diplomatic response. Heck, maybe Gates has another job in mind after his stint at DOD is done: Secretary of State. (That's a joke Madame Secretary!)

Video: Robert Gates discusses a potential end date for his term and the differing leadership styles of Obama and Bush.

*** Obama and Afghanistan: We hate looking back so much on a Monday: But we urge folks to take another look at Obama's Iraq speech from Friday. It had everything -- the actual new mission accomplishment, the attempt to politically win over the military community, an outline of how Obama will use the military during his tenure, and a clue as to what's coming next in Afghanistan. It was a rich speech and maybe more memorable than the address he gave to Congress. Specifically on Afghanistan, we want to point folks to this section: "We have learned that America must go to war with clearly defined goals, which is why I've ordered a review of our policy in Afghanistan. We have learned that we must always weigh the costs of action, and communicate those costs candidly to the American people.” A few minutes after delivering that speech, Obama said this to PBS’ Jim Lehrer: "Now, I can articulate some very clear, minimal goals in Afghanistan, and that is that we make sure that it's not a safe haven for al-Qaida, they are not able to launch attacks of the sort that happened on 9/11 against the American homeland or American interest. How we achieve that initial goal, what kinds of strategies and tactics we need to put in place, I don't think that we've thought it through… Obviously, we haven't been thinking regionally, recognizing that Afghanistan is actually an Afghanistan/Pakistan problem, because right now the militants, the extremists who are attacking U.S. troops are often times coming over the border from Pakistan." Now read between the lines here: Is Obama setting up the possibility that we won't surge into Afghanistan militarily as some might expect? And could our Afghanistan strategy simply be defined by Pakistan, meaning that Pakistan's stability becomes the driving reason behind sticking it out in Afghanistan?

So what is the message the Obama Administration is sending? They continue to criticize all businesses big and small, including corporations and small businesses. Anyone that makes money off of investments is also 'evil' and needs to be taxed more and more.

Why does Obama continue to criticize successful people? These are same people that start businesses and hire people to work for them. But in Obama's eyes, these people are the ones that should be scorned. Obama is not really making much sense. He's a populist, and that has a certain appeal to the non-thinkers of the country (which we seem to be getting more and more of lately), but at some point the  people that work hard in this country need to be given some positive spin, and not this gloom and doom treatment Obama is throwing at them.
Oh My God! What Happened?  What I Dreaded Most, A Real Idiot Is In Charge Of The RNC." What Happened To Steele? What Happened To The Hip-Hop Out Reach? FR: (That's a joke Madame Secretary!)

Madame Secretary is a joke, so it fits.
Pat Boston MA;  Keep warm and keep writing. I enjoy your comments. It will stop snowing....tomorrow.

To Chuck Todd: Sabelius to the President Obama's HHS. OK, Good, but what is the back story?  What was the issue for the falling out between President Obama and Howard Dean?  There have been several times now that Dean has been passed over. Why? Did Dean kick snow on Obama's shoes?  Did Dean allow the primaries to go too long?  What is your take on what happened?
President Obama is doing an awesome job!  He has many challenges and has managed to move quickly on them, which is difficult to do in Washington.  It is great to see that the GOP's onslaught of negativity is not working.  It is sad that they could not be more open to working for solutions for our country at this time.  I guess they have nothing to add so they choose to be the nay-sayers.
Obama: I know these steps won't sit well with the special interests and the lobbyists who are invested in the old way of doing business, and I know they're gearing up for a fight as we speak. My message to them is this: So am I."

So, what special interest groups is Obama talking about? Looks to me that he's setting up some sort of a straw-man agrument more then anything else. His stimulus bill was nothing more then a lobbyists dream that was written by Pelosi with most of the input coming from lobbyists. Obama has lobbyists on his staff, and would have had more if he could have jammed Daschle though the confirmation process. The only problem lobbyists may have with Obama's plan is that they are not big enough. They see a President that is willing to spend the country to the Poor Farm, so they may just try to add in as much as they can knowing Obama will sign it without question.

So again, what special interests are "fighting" Obama?
Rush Limbaugh is a self-loathing, drug addicted, loud mouthed fat slob; And he should be committed.  Just look at him,  "what a pathetic mess he is."
So who won the CPAC beauty contest?  Nobody!! Yes, Romney received 20% of the vote, but it didn't help him in the last two elections.  Nobody won because there are no beauties.  The struggle within the Republican party has been there for decades. The conservatives have always won over the moderates.  The conservatives are the base, and a moderate cannot stray too far from home base.  Even if President Obama's plans for the economy are slow to materialize, the conservatives have nothing to offer.
“I am boycotting CNBC because of their far right political tirades.  I suggest others do the same.  They are not living on the same planet with there rest of us.”  Joan, Minneapolis (Sent Friday, February 27, 2009 12:15 PM) Joan, I like to think there is an NBC for everyone.  MSNBC is for Main Street, CNBC is for Conservatives, and NBC is for those still kicking it “Old School”.  (Although I really like Brian Williams – he was hysterical on Daily Show last Thursday night.)

Joe Don, Topeka, KS –

Wow, you guys kicked our butts yesterday.  Home field advantage prevails and March Madness begins.  Okay, so how do YOU feel about Sebelius taking a cabinet post?  I really thought she would have a shot at the Senate seat.  Do you know much about Carol Marinovich?  She certainly has a great following (for a Democrat) in the Eastern part of your state.  Just don’t know if she could garner statewide support.
^^^^
Hey FR – this is hysterical imagery:  “…It was an impressive feat for those who admire the ability of any political shop to walk and chew gum at the same time….” Something the Repubs arguably cannot muster.  I am constantly cheered by the fact that each time the current Repubs think they have been so clever and cohesive; they highlight how completely out of touch with Main Street they really are.  If they think their convention of 8,000 faithful was a stellar success and the face of their future has only 20% of that group; then yeah – I want to celebrate their ‘victory’ with them.  Pat Buchanan used to at least be honest and say things like, “it’s all they’ve got!” which at least made sense.  What I find so striking is how they continue to double down on stupid rhetoric.

^^^^^^^^^^^
Another great quote from my President, "I know these steps won't sit well with the special interests and the lobbyists who are invested in the old way of doing business, and I know they're gearing up for a fight as we speak. My message to them is this: So am I."  I hope they go a few with a Knock Out in the fourth.  I will be supremely ticked off if the Republicans manage to succeed in framing the budget as ‘big’ government.  Given that dozens of things were left out of previous budgets by both Repubs and Dems that Obama in good faith is trying to keep in is one of many steps needed to get our government back on track to full disclosure and ultimately full transparency.  Until we know the extent of our spending, we can’t honestly approach making tough choices about where to cut.  It’s kind of like a spouse hiding the credit card and pretending there is extra money in the house.
"Is Obama setting up the possibility that we won't surge into Afghanistan militarily as some might expect? And could our Afghanistan strategy simply be defined by Pakistan, meaning that Pakistan's stability becomes the driving reason behind sticking it out in Afghanistan?"

I think that we're going to be looking as much at a Pakistan strategy as an Afghanistan strategy.  The Pakistani side of the border area seems to be where the root of the problem lies.  We just don't know yet how our Afghanistan/Pakistan military involvement is going to develop.  Be prepared for anything.

Good insight, First Read.
It is reassuring to know that the Republicans have a crystal ball that they consult, they know for certain that President Obama's plans for America's future will fail. Why didn't the crystal ball tell them what a disaster President Bush's invasion of Iraq would be? If the Republicans have a better idea for America let's hear it if not then just shut up.
Curious as to why MSNBC is not picking up on the evidence that CNBC's Rick Santelli is a right wing plant. (As I recall, you guys washed your hands of the Pain AIP connection, too.) This is news, guys-unlike utterly predictable and irrelevant Ann Coulter drivel, or the snore-inducing news that Mitt Romney is a flip-flopper. Hey, Chuck, I thought you were hot to ask the people's questions for us! Is a sister network using it's on-air people to push an agenda? THAT'S a question I want to see asked!!!!
It is with a huge sigh of relief that I learn of James Dobson's resignation as head of FOTF. This man and his band of fanatics misued and abused their power in the 2000 & 2004 elections to make every Democrat appear to be baby killers and gay rights advocats. The moral authority that the Religious Right proclaimed was vacant on both counts. The were neither moral nor an authority on anything but keeping the rich richer and the poor poorer. The aftermath of their rants has been catastrophic in helping to secure the election of GWB the second time around. What a different world it would be if Bush had never been sworn in as President.
The numerous problems out there are enormous.
This has to be a time that the politicians unite to
get our country back on it's feet. The survival of
our country depends on working together but, so far,
all we hear are lies, distortions, hypocrasy, and party
first politics. What are these politicians thinking?
The new budget takes on lobbyists, self interests and big business. It will be fought with all the swift boating the republicans can muster. We must let them know we have had enough. Call, e-mail, send letters
telling them that middle class American is now in charge of our country.
Leave Roland Burris alone. He is a vote well needed in the rancor only obstructionist Republicans can create.
There is no provision in the race for Roland Burris to be put on the ballot. It would cost $500 million. This state doesn't need this expenditure. The Republicans dreamed up a way to get the coveted seat.

Obstructionist Republicans, forget about it.
Meanwhile, the GOP talking point over the weekend was directed at the president's budget, which Republicans defined as the return of big government and the biggest wealth transfer attempt since LBJ or FDR.

Even though these points are made by the GOP.  Which one would be classified as untrue?

I for one am getting sick of the straw man arguments.  To justify a 3.6 trillion dollar budget by using the fiscal excesses of the previous administration is a deceitful.  To say that the alternative to this budget is the eight years we have just lived through is intellectually dishonest.  Is the argument that we can only have Republican overspending as the alternative to Democratic overspending?

Lets just say two wrongs to make a right.
What about Santelli's BOGUS rant?????? We want some reaction from you at msnbc.
So it's obvious Obama create no jobs last week. How many did he save?
I'm glad that the Obama admin is taking on the Rush master. He thinks he is the Lord of the wingers, and the rightys love there Rush,so if he's all that then he specks for them. They take there orders from the Rush man,and they flex when he enters the room. They are scared of him,he makes them GOPERS jump when he says jump. When will MSNBC pull the plug on David Gregory ,or is it that ratings don't mean anything.I don;t know anybody that watches his program.
The conservatives love to put President Obama and socialism in the same sentence. With just a little bit of analysis, it is clear that President Obama is trying to PRESERVE Capitalism by introducing regulations that should have been put in place years ago.  Once the banking and housing industries are stabilized, the government can continue with their regulation function and withdraw from their "owning" function.  Four years from now the voters will be better informed and less subject to Conservative rants and raves.

Crawl on your belly like a reptile ... Sebelius.
The media, the GOP, the Clintons, and McCain all still have no clue as to what a man President Obama is; all have underestimated him.  He is a wolf in sheeps clothing and very intelligent.  That's why the media nit picks over every word and every policy trying to figure out what he is going to do before his does it.  The GOP distract us with hate filled rhetoric and lies about policy, giving us no ideas of their own.  Hoping the President fails.  Those are examples of foolish men and the President will and can use it to his advantage.  The President has not been in office 6 months and its the end of America as we know it.  I see the posts on here and laugh because they are drunk with the wine of foolishness.  Our President is working for us and has good intentions whether you want to believe it or not.  That's why he won.  That's why we need to support him.  We tried it they're way.  I DIDN'T WORK!!!  How quickly we forget that.  Finally, I question the GOP intentions.  Why?  Aren't they the ones who will have to pay more taxes? Like the President I welcome they're oppostions, as a matter of fact, I expect them. If you cared about no one but self wouldn't you try to fight from paying more in taxes.  EDUCATION, HEALTH CARE AND ALTERNATIVE ENERGY IS NOT WASTEFUL SPENDIND IT IS AN INVESTMENT.
The first hundred days:  a bill with more than 9000 earmakrs-despite Obama's campaign promise to fight to keep them out of bills;

double-talk on Afghanistan-are we fighting to win, or are we going to let Al Quida regroup?  We'll have to wait and see, because what our great leader says, and what he does, are tow different things;

the economy-don't get me started.  Today, the DOW is tanking, showing how much faith business leaders have in The Great and Powerful O;

the budget-over six hundred BILLION dollars for a health plan that does not yet exist.  Rising taxes on electricity, natural gas, home heating oil, gasoline, (and probably a tax to exhale-or don't most of you recognize that CO2 is carbone dioxide, NOT carbon monoxide?).  So, federal tqaxes on ALL of these things are projected to add $500per month per family to the cost of living, to be offset by the $13.00 per week generously provided by taxing other people to pay for it.  You do the math;

When people voted for 'hope for change', I'm pretty sure that they were actually voting for hope for IMPROVEMENT.  Well, they got what the Big O promosed-CHANGE.  Not for the better, mind you, but change, none the less.

Within six months, most people are going to be calling him the big zero.

But you dems keep running against Rush Limbaugh, who ISN'T RUNNING FOR ANYTHING.

Cluelesser and clulesser.

Now tell me that Kathleen Sebelius wouldn't make a great mother-figure to Bill Clinton.

She must remind Obama of his own mom.
>> Heck, maybe Gates has another job in mind after his stint at DOD is done: Secretary of State. (That's a joke Madame Secretary!) <<

That's a pretty POOR joke, First Read.  Almost at the level of neo-conservative humor.  But, at least no chicken bones were harmed in the formation of that joke.  ;)
Lots of goodies this morning and I thank you.  In this time of economic and foreign turmoil, the Republican party continues to be a source of amusement as they bumble their way attempting to define their relevance to the current world.

True, Rush Limbaugh is, at heart, an entertainer but one with a message. Anyone got a shoe to throw?
I saw Gates on Meet The Press, I liked his answers, to me his appointment to sec. of defense was a key moment forward in Iraq. Rumsfeld was a disaster, Bush was too blind and stubborn to change course, or admit mistakes.
I like the strategy to make Rush the repubs leader!!
This guy has all the answers, so how can they ignore him, just do as he says, and all the pieces will come together for them....LMAO!!!!
I feel he will split the party of 40% into two groups of 20...yes!!!!
He certainly seems to be able to whip up the base at CPAC. These guys are clueless, and should be the minority party until the democrats completely screw up, so lets just act like the adults while they act like spoiled children throwing a fit.
We have seen their idea of leading forward, the transfer of wealth they keep speaking about has been going on a long time, only from the poor, and middle class to the rich, and greedy. It's high time the 95% of people in this country run this country again, not the top 2% with 25% of the wealth.
I would be glad to be one of the people making 250K PLUS so I could pay more taxes, please sign me up!!
Stop the whining, taxes are going back to Clinton levels when everyone prospered!!!
Rush Limbaugh is now in charge. A former drug user right wing whack job leading the Republican party, it doesn't get any better than this! Obama/Biden 2012 is now a lock. Thank you CPAC, the gift that keeps on giving!!!!!!!!

I watched Meet The Press this Sunday. I wish all political leaders were as rational and level headed as Gates. The silence after Gregory asked him the difference between Bush and Obama was the longest I've ever seen on TV. It must be hard for career executives like Gates to deal with political leaders. I'm sure Obama is sharper than Bush was, but still, every pragmatic move has to be vetted by the political types, must be frustrating.
Rush must be doing a good job if Obama and the democrats are so afraid of him.  It's like free advertising for Rush.  He has more fans than ever, thanks to the democrats.
aof   s a nation we couldalot of trouble  by simplybuying  the poppy   crop in afganistan and thus cutting the money ssource of the taliban.we could make pain killing drugs and give to poor nations medical facilities.this would a cheaper way  handle the war.

'...Tom DeLay, Rick Santorum, and Michelle Malkin have joined the Limbaugh-inspired group of conservatives who are publicly hoping that President Obama fails...'

Can you say 'DEADENDERS' ??

The Lunatic Right ....

From WashingtonMonthly.com:

'...THE EVER-GROWING ROOT-FOR-FAILURE CAUCUS....
The list just keeps getting bigger.

Over the last few days, Tom DeLay, Rick Santorum, and Michelle Malkin have joined the Limbaugh-inspired group of conservatives who are publicly hoping that President Obama fails. Yesterday afternoon, RedState's Erick Erickson kept the ball rolling with an item headlined, "I Too Want Barack Obama to Fail," encouraging other conservatives to rally behind the campaign to undermine the president.

Join the RedState Army of Activists and lets [sic] work to make sure Barack Obama fails at destroying liberty and freedom:

I want Barack Obama to fail and I want to help ensure he does.

If Barack Obama is successful in implementing his stated agenda, America will fail and the American dream will die for millions.

We already know Barack Obama's economic policy will fail, but it will hurt millions of hard working Americans.

I will join the RedState Army of Activists and fight for freedom by working to undermine Barack Obama's agenda and helping him fail.Thank [sic] you for your interest in the I WANT BARACK OBAMA TO FAIL.

Let's put aside how ironic it is to hear those who believe they're patriotic actively rooting against the nation's elected leadership. And by all means, let's certainly overlook the kind of response this would have elicited if, in the midst of multiple international crises, the left put together an organized campaign encouraging Americans to "help" George W. Bush "fail."

Instead, let's note the politics. Ben Smith, highlighting Erickson's post, said, "[S]omewhere, Brad Woodhouse and Rahm Emanuel are smiling."...'

It is fascinating that the media devoted so much time and space to CPAC so that we could learn absolutely nothing new coming from hatemongers: Limbaugh, Coulter, etc.

If they want the Obama administration to fail they have to recognize that the country they purport to love will also fail. What a bunch of morons!! I don't care what Rush Limbaugh thinks because he is a drug addict who encouraged his housekeeper to break the law to purchase his drugs. What an immoral hypocrit!

President Obama has said on several occasions that the economy was likely to get worse before it got better and we needed to brace ourselves for the ride.

Why is everybody acting like the bottom fell out of the economy on January 20, 2009? This mess occured over several years and Obama was not in charge. That would have been a Republican congress and a Republican President! The one that Secretary Gates had a hard time trying to characterize in response to David Gregory's question about differences between Bush and Obama. We all know the answer even though Gates was trying to be diplomatic. Bush is intellectually challenged maybe even short-bus material.

Since it was corporate greed that got us here it is only fitting and proper that these same corporations suffer. Unfortunately, they are taking everybody down with them. However, we are still the greatest country in the world and we will rise again as long as everybody is willing to pay their fair share. That includes wealthy people who keep screaming about tax breaks. What did they do with the last tax cuts under Bush? Lie, steal and  cheat us into the worst recession in over 30 years. I can't wait the see the list of cheats who squirrled their tax cuts in Swiss banks, RBS. That should be delicious!
" There's no go-to person right now"

That's really funny. Is that a journalist thing or a liberal thinking thing? It's the kind of mindset that makes clowns like Sharpton or Jesse "someone" when they're not. Now everyone get in your group and STFU. We'll pick who speaks for you, We are the Liberal Media.
REALLY  ??

'...Republicans Concede Budget Is Hard To Block

Republican congressional leaders ramped up criticism of President Barack Obama's budget proposal, even as they conceded that they likely won't be able to block it....

the Boner: '...CURSES, Foiled again !...'

But, what about the Senate ??
Can Obama get his budget through there ?
What has happened to our economy!  “GREED”

To the rich, being rich is not good enough! They need to be richer and richer and richer! They are getting richer off of the hard labor of the “working” middle class, while the middle class is getting poorer and poorer. What I would like to know more than anything else is just how rich do you have to be, how many millions do you need to have a good life!?!

Here is how I see it - let me try to draw you a picture if I can:

There is a manufacturing industry in your community with say 5,000 employee’s total (100 in top management – 4,900 in laborers, office staff etc.)

1. The top management makes top pay with top benefits – say $10 million a year plus big bonuses ($2 to 5 mil) each year (even during bad times for the company). The rest of the employees have a pay average of $30,000 a year. Now say that the pay for the 4,900 has been frozen or cut (because business has been bad) for the past 6 to 7 years while the cost of living, the cost of their insurance, gas, etc.  has gone up. These 4,900 employees once could afford to buy that new car, take that family vacation, remodel their kitchen, buy that new living room suite or big screen TV, etc. Now they are doing good if they can manage to keep that old car running, replace the washer when it breaks down, repair that leaking roof, etc.  (These are the ones that are lucky enough still have a job.)

2. The top management still makes top pay with top benefits – say $7 million a year plus bonuses ($1 mil max) each year that the company does good. The rest of the employees have a pay average of $50,000 a year. They got raises to keep up with the cost of living and say the company also shared the profits with these employees with bonuses. (After all where would the company be if not for the hard work of all of the employees?) The CEO’s alone do not make a company successful. This company has been fair with all of it’s employees, they can afford that new car, that vacation, that big screen TV, etc. (Maybe we wouldn’t be in the shape we are in today if more businesses had operated this way!?!)

Say you own a car dealership, furniture store, restaurant, etc. Which situation would be best for you business?

1. A community where say maybe 200 to 300 people (customers) can afford to buy you merchandise

2. A community where say at least 3,500 people (customers) can afford to buy you merchandise

I have worked for both types of companies – I know of what I speak! The greed, over the last several years, at the top of many industries, businesses, banks, etc. has played a large roll in bringing this great country down. The greedy have cut off their own noses to spite their faces, now we all suffer.

The middle to lower class is America’s largest part of the population. This is America’s consumer base. Which is best for the economy – a small consumer base or a large consumer base? When the middle to lower class (say 4000 people instead of 100 people) can afford to spend money everyone does well. If we (the largest part of America) cannot afford to buy your merchandise than you cannot get any richer – now can you!
You scratch my back .....

I'll make you RICH !!

Boring Orrin ???

From the Moonie-cult owned Washington Times:

EXCLUSIVE: Sen. Hatch's secret drug firm links
Drugmaker money to Utah senator's charity escaped disclosure

EXCLUSIVE:

The pharmaceutical industry that long has benefited from Sen. Orrin G. Hatch´s legislative efforts has directed large sums of money to a charity he helped found - and still raises money for - while also hiring the Republican lawmaker's son as a lobbyist.

Though Congress boasts that it is more transparent after passing new disclosure rules, Americans have had no way of knowing about the drugmakers' largesse to the charity, Utah Families Foundation. No way, that is, until a normally confidential tax filing was mistakenly released by the Internal Revenue Service to a nonprofit database last year.

The tax form, obtained by The Washington Times, shows that five pharmaceutical companies and the industry's main lobbying group wrote checks in 2007 to the Utah Families Foundation - some as large as $40,000 - that far exceed what they could give publicly to Mr. Hatch´s campaigns.

RELATED STORY: Many legislators' charities toe fuzzy line

The donations, $172,500 in all, came at the same time that the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America (PhRMA) was paying one of Mr. Hatch's sons, Scott, to be its lobbyist in Congress.

And if that weren't enough political intrigue, the tax-exempt charitable foundation, which the senator from Utah helped start in the 1990s and still vigorously supports, has been delinquent for nearly a decade in filing its required annual reports with Utah state officials, a Times review found.

The tale of the Utah Families Foundation provides fresh evidence that the campaign-finance limits and transparency reforms that President Obama demanded and that Congress enacted still leave avenues for interests to route large sums of money to lawmakers' favorite causes without disclosure.

"This could be more common than we know," said Melanie Sloan, a former federal prosecutor who now heads the political watchdog group Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington, which first spotted the errantly released tax form.

"When companies need a member of Congress and they've already donated to their campaigns, they can make very large contributions to members' foundations," she said. "It's another way to curry favor with a member of Congress."...'

Come on, First Read NOBODY neeeds to know this stuff !!
It's jsut scandal rag stories
Let's bury this sotry !!
>>>RNC chair Michael Steele tried to dismiss Limbaugh over the weekend as nothing more than an "entertainer." We can't wait to hear what Rush thinks of THAT description.
==========
Hey Mikey!  Jealous much?  Finally starting to realize that you're just the "Steppin Fetchit" of the RNC and that everyone's really listening to LORD LIMBAUGH.

>>>So who speaks for this very important constituency group [the evangelical movement]...Sarah Palin?
==========
Sure.  She can explain how "abstienence-only" education works for everyone until your daughter gets knocked up by some loser drop-out who has no intenetion of marrying her.  But hey, life happens.

But what's going to matter most? Her relationship with one man: Finance Committee Chair Max Baucus, who is going to be the single-most important person on the Hill in crafting any health-care legislation.

Ah Ha!!!  Obama you crafty President you!  I wanted Howard Dean but what do I know as an armchair pundit.  You are appointing people that can best push through the policy of the administration.

Keep up the good fight for America Mr. President.  Fulfill your promises to root out Lobbyists, provide a new energy economy that the world will follow, and return power truly to the people and not the few plutocrats that believe that 95% of americans are just lazy sit at home do nothings.

Sad thing is, RUSH IS the best they've got.
Interesting how the stronger the lights shine on him, the more he sweats, literally, and the less there is to send a shiver down the collective Conservative leg.

All the fuss about Pres. OBAMA not wearing a jacket in the OVAL, at least he had on a shirt and tie.
RUSH shows up at CPAC, looking like a mafia bouncer, pushing the limits of the slimming effects of BLACK past the possible, and a button too far- unbuttoned.
Nothing like a fat, balding, sweaty, blowhard to give one the vapors!
No BUZZ?
 He has no FIZZ.
Okay, who's the crackpot who criticized FR for delayed postings?  They respond better to POSITIVE reinforcement!

Great job, guys - can we see some postings, please?
Whatever health care plan they come up with, it should be the same for Congress and the President as it is for the rest of America.
What a sad statement for America when the new HHS Secretary will be a pro-choice governor who can't even find the decency to ban partial birth abortion or support parental consent--both positions which put her way out of line with the majority of Americans and clearly reduce abortion.  And then there's her support for the leading late-term abortionist in the land (Mr. Tiller). No matter what her other qualifications, someone who lacks that much conviction on EVER protecting a baby in the womb should never be a candidate for a position that supposedly is designed to promote health and life.  Abortion has hardened America's collective heart and conscience and there's no "health care reform" that can ever make up for that.
Meanwhile, the GOP talking point over the weekend was directed at the president's budget, which Republicans defined as the return of big government and the biggest wealth transfer attempt since LBJ or FDR.

-----------------------------------------------------

Yeah that FDR, what a loser he was huh??  Is the GOP seriously trying to tie the administration to what many consider to be two extremely successful presidential tenures??  Keep on comparing Obama to FDR you guys...at somepoint it becomes a self fulfilling prophecy.

Afghanistan:
Well, the words 'review', 'minimal' and 'American interest' certainly jump out at me.
Looks to me like Rush Limbaugh is becoming a much bigger, fatter idiot.
