A Specter-Toomey rematch?

From NBC's Mark Murray
Pat Toomey, the head of the conservative Club for Growth who almost ousted Pennsylvania Sen. Arlen Specter in a 2004 GOP primary, appears to be eyeing a rematch.

Toomey released this statement today: "As this disastrous recession worsens, I have become increasingly concerned about the future of our state and national economy. Unfortunately, the recent extraordinary response of the federal government - more corporate bailouts, unprecedented spending and debt, higher taxes - is likely to make things worse. I think we are on a dangerously wrong path. Pennsylvanians want a US Senator focused on real and sustainable job creation that gets our economy growing again. That is why I am considering becoming a candidate for the US Senate."

Specter, of course, was one of three GOP senators who voted for Obama's stimulus plan. You can bet that vote will be a big issue in a Specter-Toomey primary.

Hey David Gregory, you know you’re in trouble when Mika says you did an amazing job on Meet the Press. Mika has a tendency to coddle those who aren’t doing so well and David, you’re not doing so well.

You Know Meet the Press is going down hill when the only commentators they can find are Joe Scarborough and Harold Ford. I didn’t even watch it this Sunday but all the blogs are talking about what a horrible job David Gregory continues to do. And can any one figure out why Joe Scarborough was brought on for his opinion; I mean seriously, who values Joe Scarborough’s opinions, I mean really can someone points me in that directions other than Mika. Now what would have been fun is for David Shuster to have been on the show along with Joe Scarborough. Joe Scarborough lacks the intellectual ability to keep up with The Shuster in fact so does David Gregory.

But what I did find entertaining this Sunday and what was also the talk of many of the blogs was This Week with George Stephanopoulos round table. Katrina Vanden Heuvel really took Karl Rove down. I don’t think Karl Rove was too prepared for the intellectual butt whooping he received from Katrina Vanden Heuvel. When you sit around fox news personalities and George W. Bush well it’s no wonder you’re not prepared for the real world.

Thanks, Toomey.  "Real and sustainable job creation" is what we need and Obama just doesn't get it.  Specter is an idiot.
American Democracy in action! This will be like watching a comedy of errors. This is going to be a very interesting political fight with tons of political name calling and gossip. Sit back and watch the show America! Time to move forward America!
'...the conservative Club for Growth...'

Tax Cut ans spend
Tax cuts for the rich and for the Corporations

Didn't THAT just FAIL ?
Wasn't THAT what sunk George Bush's FAILED PRESIDENCY ??

FUN FACT for the day:

'...between 1998 and 2005 "about two-thirds of corporations...' Did not pay taxes !!

Talk about 'Business Friendly'
TWO THIRDS ???

From WashingtonMonthly.com:

'...Two-Thirds Of Corporations Did Not Pay Taxes:

According to last month's Government Accountability Office (GAO) report, between 1998 and 2005 "about two-thirds of corporations operating in the United States did not pay taxes" because of a variety of corporate tax loopholes...'

I don’t know if that counts corporations that moved their headquarters ‘off shore’ to COMPLETELY AVOID corporate income taxes
(What’s the famoud tool manufacture with a yellow logo that moved to the Carribean?)

How can you cut taxes ANY MORE for corporations ?
(less than zero?)

And, yes you can blame Clinton, Gore, the DLC  crowd, George Bush, Phil Gramm and their STUPID Republican allies for this

Remember when King Kong broke through that wall (original 1933) and started stepping on and eating all those natives? That scene was deleted for many decades. The Point:

If there's a monkey big enough, I want him to have Arlen Specter for desert. Probably should stay away from the zoo.

Republicans and the 'Big Red Scare' !!!

Wooooo !
Woooooo !!
Socialism is gonna get you !!
Wooooo !!
Wooooo !!
(this is scary !!)

From Washington Monthly.com:

'...DEFINE 'DEMONIZE'....

The AP has an analysis piece today on Republicans' subtle acknowledgement of President Obama's popularity. There's nothing especially wrong with the concept -- it is difficult for a defeated minority party to go up against a president with a high approval rating -- but the AP makes an unfounded assumption.

Congressional Republicans show no desire to demonize President Barack Obama, so they're condemning Democratic leaders instead. [...]

Listen to the No. 2 Republican leader in the House, Rep. Eric Cantor of Virginia. "We want to work with this president," he said Sunday. "We want people to regain their confidence in Washington. And what people are looking for is results."

But what of the $787 billion economic recovery legislation that not a single Republican in the House supported? That, Cantor said, was "Speaker (Nancy) Pelosi's stimulus bill." [...]

The Republican goal is to separate Obama from his policies and go after congressional Democrats, who fare much more poorly in public approval.

Sure, that makes sense. In fact, it's not even a bad idea for Republicans -- sidestep a fight with a popular White House, co-opt the president's rhetoric about cooperation, target congressional Dems as inflexible partisans, and try to drive a wedge between the Democratic administration and Democratic Congress.

The problem, though, is assuming that Republicans "show no desire to demonize" the president. The rhetoric from the GOP base has been extraordinarily unhinged towards Obama, and more to the point, Matt Corley noted that several leading Republican lawmakers, including both the House Minority Leader and Senate Minority Leader, have been going after Obama, accusing him of pursuing "socialism."

Does a "red scare" not count as "demonizing" anymore?....''

Wooooooo !!
Wooooooo !!

Be Afraid, America !!

(no ! No ! Don't look at that lazy FATASS Moma's boy, Limbaugh)

Think about Communism !!!

Are the democrats still thinking about running Chris Mathews for that seat?
Perfect, Toomey and Specter; the democrat, whoever it will be, will win!

Now Mikey and the rest of you so worried about socialzing health care. Don't be driving on those socialized highways and interstates, keep your children out of those socialized schools and libraries, and if you are being robbed or your house is on fire don't call the socialized police of fire departments. After all, why would you use any socialized services if you are so adamently against socialization? You have been brainwashed, okay?

The republican way did not work. Get it? It won't work. How many years of it not working will it take for you to see it or will you just continue to be in complete denial? Why should we continue to try the policies and ideas of the republicans when they have certainly been in power long enough to prove that none of it works and it won't ever work and in fact, their policies and ideas are what has caused the mess we are in. Wake up Mikey and the rest of you right wing nuts.
This is awesome.  I can't wait for Toomey to primary Specter so we can vote a Democratic Senator in the fall.  This blue state needs a progressive partner for Bob Casey in DC.
Mr. Toomey, your solution, your suggestion is????? Don't say tax cuts because that hasn't worked. There has to be more to it than that? Cut services to those who can afford it least? That would be a GOP conservative position, I suppose but why not something where everyone has a little pain but all benefit in the end? No, you wounld go for that as it would sound too much Democratic.  We have to continue to broaden the space between the haves and the have nots don't we?
Okay Mr. Toomey start creatin' those jobs NOW! Or shut up.
from Wikipedia:
"On September 19, 2005, the Federal Election Commission filed suit against the Club for Growth for violations of the Federal Election Campaign Act for failing to register as a political action committee in the 2000, 2002, and 2004 congressional elections.[1] In September, 2007 the Club for Growth agreed to pay $350,000 in civil penalties. The agreement, if approved by a federal judge, would mark the end of the lawsuit."

Nice
A club is a dangerous weapon.

Saw it and loved it.  I haven't been able to watch MTP since Gregory took over.  I occassionally will read the transcript online if a guest piques my interest.  I find his style sophomoric and lacking in substance.  He seems to roll through a rote copy of questions and doesn't do much pressing or probing "out of the box".  I miss Tim!

And I was one of those staunch Obama fans who swore off ABC after that debate with Charlie and George.  However, I have found the panel on ABC too compelling lately.  I subscribe to Newsweek, so I always enjoy George Will's take on things and he really down shifted into major moderate towards the end of the campaign.  But even more fascinating is Donna Brazille and Katrina Vanden Heuvel, whenever they are scheduled to be on I am tremendously pleased with the outcome.

A lot can happen in a year.  With the passing of Tim Russert, I no longer absorb an NBC news.  He used to be the first one into the office in the morning (Morning Joe) and the last one shutting off the lights at night.  I can't believe what a large part of my life he became.  I agree with many of the conservatives that post here.  MSNBC's Keith O and Rachel M are not really journalists; but I love their vantage point.  I've been a fan of Rachel's for a couple of years on Air America, so was thrilled she got the call.  I sort of thought Chuck T. might have a shot at the MTP desk; but his 'reporting' lately has seemed more snarky and sensational, so I'm not sure what to make of it.  I think MJ was trying to amp up and manufacture interest in MTP.  But again, Gregory's style does not probe in an intellectual way.  It leaves me flat, and have the time I find myself reading the transcript and asking my own follow up questions which would lead to better discussions.  At any rate, I enjoyed your take on the ABC roundtable.  My sentiments exactly.  Rove came off as a complete blowhard who was determined to talk over the opposition just to prevent them from speaking.  It probably worked in W's cabinet; but not so much in the real world.  Still surprised no one has compelled him to testify before congress.  what is that going to take?  An act of congress, oh wait, they've tried that.
Deficit spending is not going to correct an economy that is leveraged so far into debt.  This is not a fiscal policy issue, as the current (and previous) administration states.  This is, at its root, a monetary issue - the artificailly low interest rates whcih the Federal Reserve held for far too long, incentivising corporations, States, and individuals to increase their debt load beyond what they could afford.  The solution to the problem is not to continue to increase one's debt, but that is exactly the solution offered by the President.  It is an erroneous policy.  The only real solution to our current problem, not merely as a nation but as individuals, is to reduce spending.  The market will be able to adjust if left alone, but unfortunately, that is not what the President is doing.  The best we can all hope for is an economic recovery before the President's disasterous 'stimulus' and budget have their inevitable negative impact on the economy.
Claudia - I too loved the talking points given by Katrina Vanden Heuvel on This Week.  What really made me mad is that Karl "I outta be in Jail now" Rove wouldn't shut up while the others were talking.  He completely dissed Katrina, talking over her, telling her to "call me Karl" and attempts to undermined her message.  I got news for you Karl - you did not suceed at all.
Specter will not lose,...too many moderates in the state.  But I am all for draining Republican coffers in a futile attempt.
We will need all these new health centers after odumah gets done with shafting the middle class and they start shooting themselves in the head

bawlknee phwank (Sent Monday, March 02, 2009 3:22 PM)

You're getting ahead of yourself bp. That's Obama plan to shore up Social Security.

Specter is one of the few smart Republicans left. It appears that he might actually read the news. Unfortunately (or maybe fortunately), the Republican party will try to oust him, making it that much easier for his seat to be filled by a Democrat for the first time in many years.
Great! A lunatic fringer like Toomey running for the GOP will only ensure a *completely* Democratic Senate complement from PA! (see: Santorum vs Casey if you think I'm wrong)
This is perfect.  Maybe when the leader of the Club for Growth loses in either the primary or the general election they will finally understand how poor their strategy is.  The Club for Growth consistently mounts primary challenges against moderate republicans with extreme conservatives who can win the Republican nomination but will never be a viable candidate in the general.  This organization has never had one of their home grown candidates elected to office.

The only reason Arlen Specter is a Republican Senator from PA is because he is a moderate.  A Conservative Republican will never hold a PA senate seat.  Just like a very liberal democrat would have minimal success.  I am a Democrat that happens to respect Arlen Specter but I would much rather have someone that will caucus with us holding the seat.

I guess for that reason I should applaud the Club for Growth's lack of sense.  Keep it up guys.  Keep knocking off moderates with your conservative ideologues.  I like seeing Republican groups spend money for the purpose of essentially guaranteeing a Democratic victory.
This will actually be good for the Democrats.  Many of Specter's moderate base left the Republican party last year to vote for Obama in the primary (I'm one of them) and have no reason to return.  So, the conservative candidate can win the Republican nomination and a Democrat can then win in the general election.
Toomey is running as a representative of the Republican Party's concept of bi-partisanism....if you don't toe the party line, Bye......
Mikey.  Please support Toomey.  I look forward to both US Senators from PA having a (D) next to their name.
Specter IS an idiot, but the only electable idiot you guys have.
