McCain earmarks amendment fails

Posted: Tuesday, March 03, 2009 1:43 PM by Domenico Montanaro

From NBC's Ken Strickland
Today Sen. John McCain failed in his effort to strip thousands on earmarks from a government funding bill moving through Congress. His amendment would also have reduced the funding for several government departments to last year's lower spending levels.

His amendment failed 63-32, with a simple majority needed for passage. Only two Democrats voted with McCain: Evan Bayh and Claire McCaskill

There were eight Republicans who voted against McCain, thereby supporting the earmarks and the higher levels of spending. All but one of those Republicans (Snowe) sit on the Senate Appropriations Committee. That panel is tasked with writing the spending bills and are best positioned to add earmarks. Those GOP committee members voting against McCain were Bennett, Bond, Cochran, Collins, Murkowski, Shelby and Specter.

McCain knew this was never going to pass. It's all for show...a real display of grandstanding from someone desperately trying to hang on to whatever gravitas he earned within the GOP from his election run. This is all about trying to top Limbaugh's anti-Obama fervor.

Disgusting! None of these politicians have any morals or credibility left. That includes repubs and dems. They all try to bitch about earmarks, but when it comes time to do something about it they fold up. I have mass respect for the repubs and dems that voted for this. I beleive it is time for a good libertarian movement to rise up out of what is left of the fair-minded republicans!
Absolutely disgusting.  This is all on Obama.  He promised no earmarks. WHAT A LIAR!!!!!!!!!!
This only shows how hippycrets who work back stage play the game, and play the msm. While they where bombing Obama with all there spew about the stim package and all the pork,And MSM sucked it up like a hoover, and still do to date.So next time one of these mouth pieces from the Right come out with there spew you at FR have the right to ask them about the pork they asked for ,and the ones that give you 360 answers you can whip out the bill and show them what they asked for.But let me warn you,it will take a pair,Chuck,Dom,Mark, between the three of you maybe one pair.Or do one of the O'Donnell triplets need to get involved?
Guess Obama better request a couple hours of primetime so he can name names and make the porkers famous. I hear he reads real purdy
This was and is the one issue McCain can grasp. He couldn't get it done, now he should tell Pres. Obama how to end the wars, and finally get Bin Laden, this knowledge that he , and he alone has needs to be shared.
Just think of the money we could save in one month of Iraq, more than all the earmarks put together, but lets not forget earmarks are spent in this country for Americans!!
Can someone remind me again why we are supposed to be so upset about earmarks?

Is it because of the Bridge to Nowhere?

Does the media have a nuance to distinguish an earmark from earmark abuse? (Probably not.)
nothing on D.O.J. secret memos follow up? nothing on toture tapes destruction at C.I.A. in contravention of court orders? can you guys get a little more serious about what it is you do each day? Or is what William Colby said actually true about the C.I.A. owning everyone of any signifigance in the MEDIA ?????
Not sure where McCaskill is going with this line of 'reasoning'; but I'm not a fan of this one.  McCain has always used his puppet Kyl to 'handle' the earmarks for Arizona.  It's what has made him so 'pure' and above the fray - well except for that darn Savings and Loan fiasco.  But hey, a man's got to eat and a politician's got to cheat, right?
-----------
I got censored this morning:

Steele definitely broke the Republican Golden Rule, "Thou shalt not speak truth to Rush, or ire the stuffed mouthpiece".  The beatch slap that ensued was both 'entertaining' and 'incendiary'.
-----
To 'clara'fy my comment to Richard yesterday - I don't think it takes much effort to be a conservative and do well in a conservative state; but for Sebelius to win two terms as a fairly liberal Dem in a VERY Red state; well that takes a certain amount of talent.
--------
Does anyone besides me think Palomino actually is Ann Coulter?  The rhetoric and venom seem appropriately unbecoming - ergo it must be her.
---------
I agree, the earmarks should be flagged with appropriate 'ownership' and a press junket should be assembled to shame these people.  I saw a comment on HuffPo yesterday where only five senators said NO.  Of course, I am cynical enough to think that while Claire McCaskill said NO - Kit Bond said YES in a big way; seems a little like McCain and Kyl except I doubt seriously McCaskill and Bond are in cahoots.  Tangled is the web they weave,...
---------
I like to think that a 'crack' team of good journalists could probably come together and find a way to explain the AIG mess.  I guess I'm a little skeptical of the journalists asking for the trite sound bite, you know, instead of doing the leg work themselves.  Is it any wonder that the 'media' has become one of the things that the public no longer trusts?  Sounds like everyone is waiting for the AP to tell them what the news du jour will be.
---------
Is anyone else as disenfranchised by Morning Joke's own blatant attempt to 'buzz' David Gregory and the Gates interview?  After day two of them going on and on about how great it was; does anyone who actually saw it remember it as important as they are now making it out to be?  I think it is equal parts of trying to make Gregory out to be not as bad as he really is AND trying to legitimize Joe as a roundtable talking head.  These are two bozos whose opinions I care nothing about.  Overhyping it to try and make it mainstream IS as desperate and pathetic as it seems.
Looks like some republicans decided they like their earmarks as much as some democrats despite their on-camera chatter.  Not all earmarks are bad, in fact, many of them are good for the districts and states the Congress represent.  I must admit listening to the republicans rant against earmarks in the spending bill but forgetting to mention that about 45% belong to them is laughable.  Just like Mitch McConnell talking about cutting spending but demanding that the GOP receive the same amount of money for staffing, etc. as last year even though there are fewer republicans.
Even in his own party there are piggies at the trough. Maybe there just might be some good things in the omnibus bill. There might be some jobs created or saved by it. Perhaps there might be some money going into communities to help get stuff done that wouldn't be done without it. Good stuff not garbage. But than again our bridge to nowhere is a worthy project your bridge to nowhere is pure pork, right? It is all perspective. McCain doesn't need to propose any pork for Arizona he has Kyl to do it for him.

What is really hillarious is that the top porkers are Republicans and then they vote against the provision to cut pork? Something doesn't make sense. Are they confused or hypocrits or both? Methinks both.
All repugs who voted for this bill should be pressured to take their earmarks out of the bill. I've just about had my fill with these hipocrytes and the passive media's failure to call them on it. Every one of them should be called out to the mat for this.
I wonder how the republicans will spin this one. Or should I say how will Rush spin this one.
Those Repigs who voted against the McCain bill need nowtojust SHUT UP about Obama's spending, as well as earmarks. Obviously, not a few of those earmarks were written in by Republicans.  So they can be quiet now, please!
Thousands of earmarks?

More taxpayer money wasted by the wasteful one, Barack Hussein Obama.
Republican Thad Cochrane (R-Miss) had more earmarks than ANY SENATOR !!

Imagine him voting against earmarks

Mitch McConnell had $75 MILLION worth of earmarks
What a hypocrite !!

Did McCain mention that theother Arizona Senator, Kyl inserted so many earmarks in the bill ??

MOST EARMARKS WENT to Republican Red States !!!

Who's folling who ??
My question is this:

Since John MCCain is soooooo against earmarks and "wasteful" spending, then why doesn't he start spending his time demanding that his OWN PARTY-THE REPUBLICAN PARTY-stop asking for MILLIONS in earmarks????

McCain just loooooves to whine about all those democrats wanting all those earmarks, and how President Obama is letting them slide thru, yet HIS OWN PARTY is asking for MILLIONS in earmarks.

JOHN MCCAIN STOP WHINING ABOUT THE DEMOCRATS AND START DEMANDING THAT YOUR OWN PARTY-THE REPUBLICANS- STOP ASKING FOR MILLIONS IN EARMARKS!!!!!!   Then maybe we will listen to what you have to say.

Kind of hard for anyone to take McPork and the Republicans seriously when they are talking out both sides of their mouths.  (not to mention the fact that   Rush Limbaugh is their head honcho)

Facinating that two of President Obama's strongest supporters, Evan Bayh and Claire McCaskell voted with John McCain. Could this be an attempt to be more bipartisn and cross party lines. Just wondering.
Washington sure loves its pork!!

'...Coleman camp asks that election result be 'set aside'

Jim Mone, Associated Press

Franken lawyer: No grounds for election do-over

For more than a month, Norm Coleman stressed flaws in Minnesota's election system.

And on Monday, Coleman lawyer Jim Langdon wrote the three-judge panel to suggest the problems are so serious they may not be able to declare a winner.

"Some courts have held that when the number of illegal votes exceeds the margin between the candidates -- and it cannot be determined for which candidate those illegal votes were cast -- the most appropriate remedy is to set aside the election," Langdon wrote in a letter to the court.

Coleman's team rested most of his case Monday in the U.S. Senate election trial after more testimony underscoring problems with the election system. Under questioning from the Republican's lawyers, Minnesota's elections director acknowledged inaccurate data in the registration system that could exclude otherwise qualified people from voting.

Now Al Franken's team will try to convince judges that things aren't so bad after all....'

Well, the election had a Happy Ending

Who can quibble with THAT ???

SENATOR AL FRANKEN !!!

HA !!  HA !!
It is nice to have the old McCain back. I missed him.

From Huff Post:

'...  Pelosi To House GOP: Be Thankful For What You Have

Speaker Nancy Pelosi has a message for House Republicans who think they weren't given enough time to debate or amend the stimulus package that moved through Congress over an eight-day period earlier this session: You could have had much less.

"To tell you the truth, I could have fast-tracked this much faster," Pelosi, a California Democrat, told a group of reporters and progressive writers at a breakfast gathering Tuesday...'

She just forgot to say Beyotches when talking to the republicans

Get used to BIPARTISANSHIP !!

GO NANCY !!

Gee it looks like the 3 republicans who sit on this committee are in a good position for whatever they want, just like the x Senator from alaska, with the bridge to now where, i guess there continuing the bridge.   Cost taxpayers  billions because of them putting themselves in a position of pork spending. I would like to ask them how come we didnt get to review the stimulus, same reason we didnt get to review the stimulus. Who represented the people when they decided to vote the way they did.I think they should change parties, seems they want there interest first and screw the people who put them there...You can throw in the big pork guy Chuck schumer, Peolsi more important to go to europe than face up to the American people on what was in the stimulus. Reid a train not even shovel ready, but in time for his reelection....Frank, Fannie and Freddie....No wonder we dont have confidence, most are crooks and probably more.....Fed up cant find jobs, make mortgage payements, lost health care, etc.  All why they take good care of themselves.Nice pay raise, increas of double last years office expe, spiff and whatever else while Americans continue to lose jobs so they can pay for there ride...but were broke.
Listen! I may be a bigot and a drug addict but I'm the leader of the GOP so I say we're against all diplomacy.
Rush L.

For a second there,  I thought you were babbling on about Obama.
Hmmm...I wonder what article from the Huffington Post MSierra will cut and paste in response to this.
*Obama approves 8500 earmarks in his Stimulus Bill. Same Obama who promised NO earmarks during his campaign and on his website.

March 3, 2009

Have You Blamed Your Bush Today!
When will a journalist do a story on corporate media bias?  For example, look at this blog entry.  Once again, a strange focus on earmarks, which only account for about 1 percent of the budget, and many earmarks are actually beneficial despite Jindal's off-hand remark about volcano monitoring (what exactly is wrong with preparing for natural disasters?).

Again, why does the media simply repeat GOP talking points on tax and spend, and trickle down, then claim the media has a liberal bias?  Is it to hide a bias by the major media in favor of its corporate advertisers and sponsors?
First, the Pre-nup,  then Palin, and now this. John's probably missing Hanoi about now.
This bill is really offensive. It should be squashed by the administration - or if the money is to be spent, spend it responsibly. Saying it's the previous guy's mess isn't good enough any more... Why is this political blog the only mention of this on this Web site?
Just askin', but doesn't "OMNIBUS" imply earmarks?  Isn't an OMNIBUS bill supposed to fund state  projects??

Should this be likened to "It's not a stimulus bill, it's a spending bill!!"

Just askin'
Apparently John McCain wants Obama to fail, too.
John Mccain could start the ball rolling by voluntarily giving up some of his taxpayer paid perks like his military retirement pay, his social security check, his medicare, his senators pay and the near free cadillac healthcare he receives...its easy to be against spending for someone else when you are getting 250K a year from the taxpayers...
I guess the liberals are in charge
Awwww, John... so close... you had the high ground. I could see the old John McCain for just a moment, but you had to add that reduced departmental funding thing. Your amendment was probably doomed anyway, but an amendment that simply chopped out ALL earmarks would have been a joy to behold; endless entertainment  watching all the defenders contortions (both sides).
Amusementometer set to 85%
Even taking out all the earmarks from the bill it only reduced the amount by 4%... wow..

I think McCain is a grumpy old man who needs to go home and retire.
On should be changed to of in the first sentance - no need to post this just thought you should know!
Doesn't he realize how out of touch he is and that most of those earmarks will help to create jobs.  WHy should he care about jobs, afterall he married money.
Apparently, there's not a lot of love for FAT, PILL POPPING, DRAFT DODGING HATE MONGERS !!

From HuffPost:

'...Recent poll showed Bush with higher favorable rating than LimbaughRon Brynaert

Published: Tuesday March 3, 2009

Republicans appear to be bowing down left and right to conservative pundit Rush Limbaugh, even though most Americans view the radio talk show host unfavorably.

In fact, polls by Gallup in February show that Limbaugh has less favorable ratings from the mainstream public than former President George W. Bush. But while members of Congress and presidential aspirants spent most of the last two years trying to run away from Bush, Limbaugh's power seems to be expanding.

"In a February Gallup poll, 45 percent of respondents said they had an unfavorable view of Limbaugh, to 28 percent with a favorable opinion. The partisan divide was steep, with Republicans favoring Rush 60-23, while Democrats disapproved 63-6," Howard Kurtz writes in Tuesday's Washington Post...'

How many times has that boy been married ?
Apparently he can't 'rise to the occasion'

Limbo wore a Wonder Bra and Black silk panties during the Viet Nam Era
It kept him out of the draft

John McCain doesn't get it. First of all, he should explain just what is so terrible about earmarks, then maybe someone would listen to him. Secondly, I seem to recall, he LOST the election. He needs to go away.
Democrats - earmarks of corruption

I have been trying for hours to figure out a way to blame Bush for this.  Help?

I know, I know some republicans are just as bad as most of the democrats.  You leftist wacko's keep saying this like it is some kind of an excuse.

Isn't this what you did when you were 6 years old.

"but Mommy, timmy did it toooooo"

Simple solution, pass a bill that any and all earmarks must be paid by the legislator who added them.  Watch the earmarks go to zero!!!

How many more millions is Nancy Pelosi giving to her husband.  Not a conflict of interest???

Me and all my democrat friends have been duped!!!

Obama: Basing policy on stock market 'fits and starts' could lead to bad policy...

How about if the market goes down on average 9 out of 10 days Barack? I can't believe what a moron Obama is. All the hype of how smart he is, and he's turning out to be dumber then a fish.

If the market keeps tanking Obama, then so will you. Those are tens of thousands of jobs going down the tubes everyday. Unless you get off your socialist agenda, the market is going to continue it's downward trend, and you'll be looking for a job in 2012.
What did McCain do to make this happen?  Did he talk with fellow senators?  What did he say to make his arguements?  He can't do this on "I'm right about this so vote with me!" kind of talk.  If he is too arrogant or pompus about this, then his fellow senators are going to vote against him no matter how they feel.

I guess you skipped over the part about Democrats **and** GOP *both* having earmarks in this bill.  But you only want to single out one side for the abuse.  Typical partisan rhetoric.

Typical GOP reaction.  Keep saying the same thing over and over and over again in an attempt to get people to think it is true.

Care to name your source material for this figure?  I bet not.
See some Dems voted with him now play fair boy's and girls.
Too funny. Before Barack (BB), liberals were all over the evils of <queue scary music> Earmarks!! After Barack (AB), well, not all earmarks are created equal, some are good (Democrat ones) and some are bad (Republican ones). With a little more hand-waving and some more group counseling, the liberals can probably work their way through this little conflict they are having.
Sorry you cannot blame Obama for this one. This was Bush's budget that he left for the Congress to vote on. It has to be passed before Obama can come in and make changes.  You Obama nay sayers need to get your facts straight.  This is Bush's BUDGET not Obama's.
Whose earmarks were they? What were they?
If weren't good for the stimulus, etc., then Pres. Obama should have a 'Don't even think of doing this again...' statement.
