First thoughts: Just a little patience?

*** Just a little patience? Are we starting to see evidence of the country’s (especially the media’s) short-attention span take hold? From the left, Paul Krugman today contends that the Obama stimulus was too small, and that he’ll need a second stimulus. “The latest data confirm those worries — and suggest that the Obama administration’s economic policies are already falling behind the curve.” (Krugman has influence with congressional Dems, so expect to hear some chatter about a second stimulus.) And from the right, Sens. John McCain and Richard Shelby argued over the weekend whether enough is being done with the banks. “‘Sen. John McCain (R., Ariz.), speaking on ‘Fox News Sunday,’ said that in its early efforts to stabilize the banking system, the Obama administration has ‘started off badly with a message that was not specific.’” (You’ve gotta love the irony of McCain criticizing Obama for not being specific on the banking crisis; that was part of McCain's problem during the campaign.) All of this seems to be creating an atmosphere of, "We need to do something and need to do something now” again, right? Then again, today is just Day 49 for the Obama administration, and as our recent NBC/WSJ poll noted, 84% believe that Obama inherited the economic problems, and 66% of those people said that Obama had at least a year before he was responsible for them.

*** Stem cell day: Outside of his reversal of the Mexico City Policy on overseas abortions and his nomination of Kathleen Sebelius to head HHS (which angered some anti-abortion activists), Obama hasn’t really waded into the culture wars during his first seven weeks as president. But that changes at 11:45 am ET today, when he delivers remarks and then signs an executive order lifting the Bush administration’s restrictions on embryonic stem-cell research. Under Bush, NBC’s John Yang notes, no federal funding could be used for research on stem-cell lines created after Aug. 9, 2001 -- the date he announced his policy from his ranch in Crawford, Texas. What Obama’s executive order will do is remove that "artificial deadline," in the words of a senior administration official, for the creation of stem cell-lines. In short, after Monday, new stem-cell lines may be created for the purposes of research. But the change will not be overnight, Yang adds; it will take the National Institutes of Health some time to develop research guidelines. Also, as the New York Times points out, Obama will leave it to Congress to decide on the thorniest issue of all: whether the “legislative ban on federal financing for human embryo experiments should also be overturned.”

Video: Obama is expected to reverse restrictions on stem cell funding and research today, John Yang reports.

*** Other stem cell odds and ends: A few other things worth noting for today’s stem-cell news: Polls taken in 2007 showed that about 60% of the public supports embryonic stem-cell research, and loosening the Bush restrictions has been a bipartisan aim… Indeed, joining Obama today will be three Republicans who support the science: Orrin Hatch, Arlen Specter, and Mike Castle... What’s more, it’s quite likely that the Bush policy would have been reversed even if McCain had won back in November, since the Arizona senator also favors this research.

*** Under his skin? While the president did his best to avoid making news in his recent interview with the New York Times, let's not ignore his decision to call back and re-answer the paper’s question whether -- as conservatives are arguing -- Obama is driving this country towards socialism. “[H]e called reporters from the Oval Office to assert that his actions have been ‘entirely consistent with free-market principles’ and to point out that large-scale government intervention in the markets and expansion of social welfare programs began under President George W. Bush.” Clearly, the president was irked by the use of the word. And we wonder if Schumer said the word "moderate" so much during his "Meet the Press" interview, that it was an intentional response to the "socialist" line of questioning.

Video: In a wide-ranging conversation with the New York Times, Obama tries to quell the fears of anxious Americans.

*** The earmark tightrope: Just askin’, but will Obama have the credibility to both sign this omnibus AND lecture Congress about the number of earmarks? It's apparently what the White House is going to attempt to do this week, but it's a very tough line to walk. The Hill says the omnibus bill is expected to pass this week.

*** Geithner watch: The announcement over the weekend of three key Treasury appointments should be enough to calm down the percolating stories about staffing issues at this important department. And yet, the New York Times ran a potentially C.W.-setting piece about whether Geithner is in over his head. “Analysts say it is far too early to know if Mr. Geithner and his team will be effective. But some worry that political and financial constraints have made them reluctant to grapple with the full magnitude of the crisis." and

*** Frum strikes back: Also over the weekend, Newsweek fired the latest salvo in the Limbaugh wars when it published a story entitled “Why Rush is Wrong.” The wrinkle here: The piece was by conservative David Frum, a former Bush speechwriter. “Rush is to the Republicanism of the 2000s what Jesse Jackson was to the Democratic Party in the 1980s,” Frum writes. “He plays an important role in our coalition, and of course he and his supporters have to be treated with respect. But he cannot be allowed to be the public face of the enterprise—and we have to find ways of assuring the public that he is just one Republican voice among many, and very far from the most important.” Americans United for Change also is going up with another TV ad tying Limbaugh to the Republicans. One other Limbaugh thought: It was interesting to hear Gingrich on “Meet the Press” basically distance himself from Limbaugh in the same way Steele attempted to do, but Gingrich just did it more eloquently -- and in a way that wouldn’t draw Limbaugh's ire.

Video: Gingrich discusses Rush Limbaugh's role in the GOP on "Meet the Press."

*** Captain Kirk: On Capitol Hill today at 5:00 pm ET, the Senate Finance Committee holds its confirmation hearing for Ron Kirk, President Obama’s pick to be U.S. trade representative. The biggest controversy: The Finance Committee’s discovery that Kirk owed thousands of dollars in back taxes. As the Washington Times’ editorial page puts it, “Good grief! Yet another presidential nominee … owes back taxes. He joins Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner, former Sen. Tom Daschle, failed Chief Performance Officer candidate Nancy Killefer, and Labor Secretary Hilda Solis (whose husband was the offender) among those nominated who owed back taxes.”

So now we hear the GOP rumblings that Obama has overreached.  He has reached the point where this is his economy.  He cannot do this and he cannot do that, and so on, blah, blah, blah.  I get it; so stop your whining already.

My question is simple.  What would be the mess if anyone else was President right now?

And while we are on the subject of GOP created messes, why are we not doing anything about the high cost of gas?  As much as the mortgage crisis, bank failures, high unemployment, isn’t high gas prices just as much at fault?  How many trillions of dollars were wasted by the GOP driven, non-regulatory market speculators?
So America, are you better off then you were 8 weeks ago?
People - here are some facts about the Great Depression and I have also provided a link to more on this. Of the many I checked out, I found it to be a very educational site. It is written in a way that you can understand. If you want to understand what is happening to us right now – I suggest you go there and READ EVERY page. EDUCATE YOURSELF. UNDERSTAND WHAT IS HAPPENING.

FACTS: (Does any of this sound familiar?)
In the 1920’s taxes and regulation were slashed dramatically, monopolies were allowed to form, and inequality of wealth and income reached record levels. Half of the American people lived at or below the minimum subsistence level. (subsist – to manage to keep oneself alive) The inequality of wealth resulted in the rich producing a surplus of goods, but leaving the poor too poor to buy them. Factory workers were paid so little that they could not afford to buy the goods they were producing. In the 1920’s, individual worker productivity rose an astonishing 43% from 1919 to 1929, but the rewards were funneled to the top. By 1929 the richest 1% owned 40% of the nation’s wealth. The bottom 93% experienced a 4% drop in real disposable per-capita income between 1923 and 1929. In other words, the largest part of America’s population was unable to buy the goods that were produced.

Inequality in wealth = the rich get richer while the middle class income stagnates or declines - the poor get poorer.

World War II cured the Great Depression because the US finally began massive spending on defense. Wars are an economic boon because governments always resort to massive spending during them. Such spending does not have to be directed toward war – social programs are more preferable. In seven short years, under massive government spending, the US went from the greatest depression it has ever known to the greatest economic boom it has ever known.

Under his skin? While the president did his best to avoid making news in his recent interview with the New York Times, let's not ignore his decision to call back and re-answer the paper’s question whether -- as conservatives are arguing -- Obama is driving this country towards socialism. “

Of course Obama is driving the country to socialism. Is this a mystery to anyone? When the New York Times is letting you know that you are a socialist, you better listen to them. There are many writers employed by the Times that are socialists in their own right, and they know one when they see one.
Sunday on Meet the Press, Newt Gingrich said he doesn't want the president to fail,  he just wants his policies to fail --duh if his policies fail, the President will fail, I wish Newty would try to grow a brain.
Also this week-end, it looks like Arlen Specter is being thrown an unexpected lifeline as a second conservative candidate (someone with a history of getting good scores) is set to jump in the PA primary along with Toomey. That could be all the Senator needs to squeak through. (Details: http://campaigndiaries.com/2009/03/08/specter-loose-ends/ ).
John Harwood reports that some GOP moderates don’t think the White House’s focus on Limbaugh helps the Obama administration. ‘It doesn’t help, frankly,’ said Senator Olympia J. Snowe, a moderate Republican from Maine who serves as a fulcrum in contentious debates on Capitol Hill. ‘It sidetracks all the major issues they’re facing.’”

It's too bad. When Rush Limbaugh repeats over and over that he wants President Obama to fail, the Administration should fight back, hard.

We have a President who is trying to tackle some very serious issues, domestically and internationally. To have Limbaugh go on both radio and tv to repeat over and over that he wants President Obama's policies to fail is the height of irresponsibility. But this has always been Limbaugh's mentality. After all, what does he care? He makes millions of dollars a year.

He should be attacked. He knows nothing. It's all rhetoric. And his kind of talk is dangerous to a country on the brink of a depression. People are losing their jobs and their homes. But this is all comical to Limbaugh, because he's getting the attention he so desperately needs.

Leave it to the rich white republican guy to not give a damn about anybody. People like him never do. This is why we're in this position. They go through life with nothing to offer, except their big mouths and their self-centered greedy policies.
Krugman is probably right. The GOP and moderates yanked plenty of immediate spending right out of the stimulus, so it will take much longer for any positive economic impact. Of course, conservatives will simply blame Obama and the stimulus for being ineffective.

About Unions:
I am not necessarily taking the unions side here but I am taking the workers side. I am using the auto industry here for an example but this would apply to many industries today. I hear a lot said that the unions are bringing down the auto industry. They make too much money. I do not hear any body complaining about what the CEO’s make. The average pay for a UAW worker (Including Health Ins. Etc) is about $60 an hour, =$10,400 a month or =$124,800 a year. Now, how many “$millionS” a year do the top CEO’s make, plus their bonuses and other perks.  In other words – all the Indians do all the hard work – all the Chiefs get the rewards. The Chiefs are not the only people that make a company successful – the Indians also play a big part in a company’s success. Shouldn’t they share in that success? In the last several years the Indians’ pay has stagnated or declined while everything else has gone up; therefore, their buying power has declined. That new car they could afford 5 or 6 years ago they cannot afford to buy today. Now how many Chiefs would you say GM or Ford have and how many Indians? If the Chiefs are the only people that can afford to buy you product – you are not going to sell much are you. But if the Chiefs and the Indians could afford to buy your product – WOW - just look at all the money you could make!
Man what's with all these deadbeat taxpayers serving in our government?  About time for a law that makes it illegal to hold political office or work for the government if a person is found to owe back taxes.  About time to crack down on these deadbeat taxpayers instead of mollycoddling these cheaters with a nicer IRS.

So funny to see the infighting in the loser republic party.  I'm glad that Frum is attacking Mount Lushmore as we Liberals stand back and laugh at the losers bickering.

I sure hope Geithner picked 3 honest people who paid theur taxes so he can start staffing his department properly.

In Obama We Trust!
In Limburger They Bust!
I think the number one issue facing our nation is Rush Limbaugh. I for one am very happy President Obama is taking the necessay time and making Limbaugh his center piece issue early in his administration. It is important for Obama to brand the Republicans. All the problems with the economy, health care, and the environment are lesser issues that can be addressed much, much later.
About Health Care:
The cost of health care is a monkey on the backs of everyone in America including industries. The cost to employers and employees alike has gone up more and more every year. It is a major expense on businesses. If the cost is not brought under control, this will be a benefit that business will have no choice but to cut from employee packages in order for the company to survive. Than where will we all be if we have to pay for it on our own? President Obama wants to reform health care – find a way to cut cost so that it is affordable to everyone including industry – not free to everyone. The cost of health care, above everything else, is bankrupting individuals, business, states and America. It needs to be brought under control.

Why does Krugman always seem to have the last word when it comes to the economy? His Noble Prize does not impress me. All that says is that the folks within the Noble Prize Org are Keynsians. There are a quite a few economists who disagree.

The way to "stimulate" the economy is to encourage private money back in. Public money just confuses the markets and forces the more efficient private money out. Plus, growth on the public side lessens Liberty. Growth on the private side expands Liberty.
Why is Krugman taken seriously when it was Keynesian policy like those he preaches that got us into this mess in the first place? And who cares if the problem was inherited or not - it is getting worsened by the actions currently taken. Both parties have blood on their hands.
http://www.arbitraryvote.com
I'm afraid that Paul Krugman is correct in saying that the stimulus bill was too small.  It was those small minded morons of nope who kept whining about how big the stimulus package was and who kept it too small.  This bushwhacked economy needs some big stimulus to get it out of the ditch the bushwahcker drove it into.  Best thing to do is raise taxes on the very richest by putting back the top tax brackets that Raygunz got rid of.

So much whining about socialism it's getting really boring and tiresome.  This always comes from the freaks who want to accumulate too much wealth and could care less about how the rest live.  Well now we're seeing what happens when the rich and greedy have too much wealth leaving the rest of us to get by by borrowing until we bust our children's inheritance.

Tax the Rich and Give to the Poor!
Science: Who could be against Science?

Conservatives are experts at creating fear.  Don't trust people you don't know.  Don't trust people with strange sounding names...like Barack.  Dont trust people from foreign countries.  All these things can hurt you or take away your wealth.

But what do consiervatives fear?  NEW IDEAS THAT CHALLENGE CONVENTIONAL THINKING. Science methodically generates new ideas with new questions.  Stem cell research is one of those scary ideas because no one really knows where this research could lead. So, how do you discredit new, potentially dangerous ideas?  One way is to wrap them in fundamental religious doctrine; the way Bush 43 did when he vetoed stem cell research.  Will conservatives continue to fear science? You betcha.  A wealth of new ideas come from science, including the medical etiology of homosexuality. Now that is something conservatives fear.

Financial Armageddon:  World wide recession compliments of deregulation: A pillar of conservative thinking.  Next bad idea idea is "spending freeze". Just do nothing and watch further free-fall of the housing and stock market.

Some will be impatient and want our financial pain to end tomorrow and some will blame our President.  But going back to the same old thing will not get us to the promised land of a health country or healthy global market.
Socialism???
Get a grip people. This is far from socialism.
If this is socialism I want my HEALTH CARE DAMM IT.
You whiners who keep saying SOCIALSM have no idea what you are talking about.
You are just SCARED of anything but what we had.
But what we had got us to this so?????

If health care costs went down to half or a third wouldnt that help everyone?
The Banks are disaster so the Gov needs to step in.
Should we have the banks collapse and creat panic?? Runs on the banks???

Wake up IGNORANTS. If we lost teachers, Police and firefighters along with the states crumbling what would we have????

HOOVERVILLES................
Senator Shelby says we should just let the failing banks close. Great!

Question:
Since all bank acounts are insured up to $250,000 by the FEDERAL GOVERNMENT, isn't that basically saying that the government should pay them to go out of business?

Jack Welch was on Morning Joe-ke this morning saying that President Obama's plan was "too muddled" and that the President should just forget all this frivolous stuff like "healthcare" and "energy".

Question:
If we are going to lose 650,000 jobs a MONTH, and all those people are just being ADDED to the 47+ million folks who already didn't have ANY health insurance, are we just supposed to cross our fingers and hope none of these folks get sick?

Question:
If we don't invest in healthcare and energy NOW, how are we going to create new technologies and jobs for the future?

Question:
Isn't "diversification" supposedly one of the central tenets of sound investment? Why is President Obama expected to put all of his eggs in the Wall Street Basket, when we have already seen what happens when you let a bunch of greedy, shortsighted SOBs run the financial system?

Question:
Since an economic crisis is not the right time to reform healthcare, why didn't the Bush Adminsitration make any effort to improve health care when things appeared to be going good?

Question:
Why do we have to listen every day to a bunch of rich "pundits" with health care tell us how we don't need to worry about anything but what THEY want us to worry about?

Forget about our own health and jobs, just focus on Wall Street, because that is ALL that matters.

So basically, let's just let the folks who screwed everything up dictate to us what is important and what isn't, because their judgement has been so STELLAR in the past.

What a load of bull.
Geithner watch: The media and the Stock Market have an attention span about as long as a blink. It was not long ago when Geithner was the darling of the media and the Stock Market surged on his nomination alone. What is so different about Geithner now that would make one wonder if he is in over his head? His credentials have not changed and the same qualitifications that warrented his nomination and ultimate confirmation will be evident as the country pulls out of this economic mess we are in.

The Stock Market is much like the housing market was before the bubble burst. There was no rationale, except for greed, that drove the super inflated housing market and the same can be said of the irrational downturn of Dow. The Market has got to get a grip on itself and stop reacting or over-reacting to everything that hits the news cycle for the day.
I promise No Earmarks

I promise No Earmarks

I promise No Earmarks

Just another Lie from the Obama Administration

Now we see that Nancy Pelosi is holding all the cards and Obama's knads.

Obama says "yes miss Pelosi, whatever you say"

Obama needs to be carefull how much of Pelosi butt he kisses - she is from San Fransico, home of Aids and Freaks.  His lips may rot off - Watch how many blisters and soars he gets on his lips.

Obama doesn't have to worry about testicular cancer - Pelosi keeps them safe in a glass jar on her desk.

Just plain funny - I am sure glad I voted for Obama.

By the looks of unemployment and the stock market, we need Bush back...soon.
I think that everyone, especially those in the media, should shut up and let President Obama do his job. There is no one, even Paul Krugman, who has a definitive answer on ending the recession. At least the President is doing something.

I am also sick of not only the hypocrisy of the right, but the hypocrisy of the media, also. Where was the press 8 years ago? Why weren't they asking tough questions? Second guessing George Bush? They were no where!

It took Jon Stewart to show how ludicrous the so-called experts are when he hit CNBC with his Daily Show segment. It is brilliant.

MSNBC, CNN, and FOX are not news outlets - they are nothing but commentary, and rather, outlets for their corporate owners.

It is amazing to me how easy it is for everyone to forget what the Bush administration did to this country.

The media and its pundits have no credibility.
That's the change I can believe in by trashing the bushwhacker's idiotic ban on stem cell research.  Plus several other things that needed reversing like abortion bans and other such nonsense from the christian lunatics.  Up with Science for a better future!

McNasty should go back to napping in order to not show his true ignorance on the issues.  He whines if Obama helps the banks and now whines it's not enough help.  He needs to stop talking out both sides of his mouth.  If he wants to be a maverick he ought to try supporting Obama.

Support Stem Cell Research!
Up with Science!
It's not the american people that are short on patience try the MSM all they can talk about is gloom and doon, or is Obama doing to much?  I started listening to Comedy Central for the lighter side of things plus they actually have the truth.
Question:
If we are going to lose 650,000 jobs a MONTH, and all those people are just being ADDED to the 47+ million folks who already didn't have ANY health insurance, are we just supposed to cross our fingers and hope none of these folks get sick?

Questions: Seeing Obama-nomics is causing a record number of a layoffs, who is going to pay for all the extravagant government programs Obama is proposing?

To Pat in Boston:
I always look forward to your comments.  They are well written and right on.  Thanks.
Opinion polls consistently show the American people give Obama at least one year to fix this mess, whereas the press appears to have given him about a month, tops.
When the repubs start jumping on Pres. Obama about the economy and how he should have fixed it by now, even though he has not been in office 2 months yet;  They should be immediately reminded to compare the difference between what george w bush was left from Bill Clinton "SURPLUS", And the mess george w left President Obama..
Margaret Thatcher said it best: "The trouble with socialism is that pretty soon you run out of others people money.".

Another one I like from Ms. Thatcher is: "To cure the British disease with socialism is like trying to cure leukaemia with leeches.".

See Democrats. We don't want Obama to fail. We're just the first to know that he will.
Nashville_fan (Sent Monday, March 09, 2009 9:37 AM)

I agree with you.  MSM is greedy and heavily invested in Wall Street.  That's why all there news is consumed on Wall Street like the rest of the world doesn't exist.
The more we, the public and you, the media, give Rush a forum, the more effective he will be.  Just leave him be, ignore him, let the ultra right people drown in his retoric, let the rest of us rise above it.
"Economists at the World Bank warned yesterday that “the world is falling into the first global recession since World War II,” and it is confronting developing countries with “massive financial shortfalls that could turn back the clock on poverty reduction.” The new World Bank report said the crisis “began with junk mortgages” in the U.S."

In other words, unethical business practices.

Just askin’, but will Obama have the credibility to both sign this omnibus AND lecture Congress about the number of earmarks?
--------------------------------

Just askin', but when are you media types going to start admitting that these earmarks are less than 2% of the budget and that 40% of them are for Republicans?

The commotion about earmarks is just another "nontroversy" fabricated by the Republicans and dutifully regurgitated by the corporate media.
No integrity. No dignity. No patience. No direction.
No honesty. No respect for the unborn. No 2nd term.

That's my Obama.
This:

Then this.

Tax the Rich and Give to the Poor!

Eric, Salinas, CA

So, you're for socialism. How's that worked out for you in California? Low taxes, low state budgets, good solid services to all Californians? Just a utopia for you people out on the left coast I bet.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
No actually, it's just another lie from you.

President Obama never promised no earmarks, he promised earmark reform.

Do your homework and stop spreading lies.

P.S. Earmarks aren' the problem, media created distractions are. This is a classic, irrelevent, tempest in a teapot while the corporate media troes to get us all to forget the elephant in the middle of the room: health care and energy reform.

Will Obama be signing any earmarks today?

What's your solution, Einstein?

It's gonna take more than quotes to get us out of this one - any ideas?

Or is planning for the President to fail your big idea?

What a visionary you are.
Barack Obama

You're gonna have to serve somebody.

"It might be the devil or might be the Lord,
but you're gonna have to serve somebody."
Sens. John McCain and Richard Shelby, SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF THERE SLEVES. this whole mess need the attention of everybody, not just the president and the demicrats. the republican want to criticise and say the president is wrong, but all the have to offer is tax cuts. the republicans need to offer more, to help the president and give the country hope that WE are working on the problem. but this division is killing us. i remember Tipp O'neal gave president reagan the support he needed to push his adgenda, if he agreed or not he worked with the president. if reagan was right or wrong, the key dems helped give him what he needed, lets remember reagan did not a majorty of republicans in congress, it was controlled by the dems. well this division to me is sour grapes, the republican don't like the way the game is being played so the want to stand on the side lines and just let there team loose, THE AMERICAN TEAM. HERE IN CHICAGO, CUB FAN DON'T LIKE SOX FANS AND VICE VERSA BUT IN THE END WE REMEMBER WE ARE CHICAGOANS
THE REPUBLICANS NEED TO REMEMBER WE ARE ALL AMERICANS.
W.

Thank you.
"Republicans For A Capitalistic America" ... an Oxymoron. It's not Republicans for a Capitalistic America but Republicans for a Greedy and Bankrupt America!  You were given 8 years to be stewards not skewyers of the American dream.  Now it's Obama's charter to get us out of the PIT, Bush and gang plunged us into!

Rush Limbaugh the spokesperson for the Repugs ... absolutely!  You deserve each other!
Opinion polls consistently show the American people give Obama at least one year to fix this mess, whereas the press appears to have given him about a month, tops.
lisa

Bush said the War on Terrorism would take decades. The media and the people gave him months. Obama is now getting the same treatment with respect to the economy. You can't keep keep saying the fix is years away, and not show any progress towards that goal. Obama is falling into a trap of his own making.
"So America, are you better off then you were 8 weeks ago?"

Absolutely! I can't get enough of seeing Obama at work. I have never had a President who operated so much in the sunlight. It isn't the President's fault the economy tanked, but he is engaged and hard at work in addressing the situation. I believe we will come out of this a stronger, more ethical country. We used to worship golden idols, now the old gods are overthrown and we worship competency, transparency, dialogue and community. Its a new day.
Earmarks = Stimulus.  Somebody gets a job, and/or somebody gets to keep a job.  Obama knows what he is doing.  Earmarks are good in times of recession.  Keep the earmarks coming Mr. President.
"Questions: Seeing Obama-nomics is causing a record number of a layoffs, who is going to pay for all the extravagant government programs Obama is proposing?

Questions - More Questions"

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
Glad you asked - because it is in the budget outline the President submitted. Why don't you READ it?

We are all going to be paying for generations to come for the BOONDOGGLE that is still costing us 10 BILLION DOLLARS a MONTH - the Iraq WAr!

P.S. What is causing a record number of layoffs is the short sighted policies that allowed business to send our manufacturing jobs overseas and built a domestic economy based on consumption.

No jobs = less consumption = cycle of layoffs. A cycle that went on for all of 2008 while the Republican Party proclaimed "the fundamentals of our economy are strong."

Nothing could be further from the truth.
I don't think President Obama has over-reached.  If anything his proposals, due primarily to the need to 'work' with the Republicans, are not far reaching enough.

President Obama inherited an unbelievable mess on multiple fronts.  I'm sure the first few days of briefings were an eye-opening and frightening experience for Obama and his team.  The prior administration was obviously not forthcoming with information and the extent of our challenges dramatically understated, if not unknown.

Fortunately for us, President Obama has the intelligence and the courage to know that he HAS to address health care and energy along with the economy.  They are all part of the package.  Fixing one without addressing the other two will not solve our problems. We may be able to have a short-term recovery by focusing on the economy alone but long-term (and its time we as a nation had the courage and discpline to think long-term; for our children and grandchildren) we will find ourselves back to the precipice.  It is exactly that type of short-sited thinking from the prior administration that led us into the mess are now find ourselves.

Let us all pray that President Obama succeeds.  Failure, as so many of his distractors are publicly endorsing, cannot be an option.
I think the number one issue facing our nation is Rush Limbaugh. I for one am very happy President Obama is taking the necessay time and making Limbaugh his center piece issue early in his administration.

Don't be too happy. President Obama spent all of one second mentioning Limbaugh's name in a single sentence in a private meeting with Repub congress critters. The diabolical Rahm Emanuel spent all of one minute discussing Rush -- after Repub-friendly Bob Schieffer asked him about Rush on Face the Nation.

The Obama's alleged plot to tie Limbaugh to Republicans is another nontroversy manufactured by the media. It's also a lie, because Obama has done no such thing.

The sniveling Republican "leadership" tied themselves to Limbaugh, who must abjectly crave his forgiveness if a word of criticism of Limbaugh escapes their lips. Telling the truth about Rush is a crime in the Republican Party.

Ron, Indiana you make a good point. When we fear science in the US the discoveries will be made in other countries. We aren't the only people in the world with world class universities or labratories.

Already Brazil has done remarkable things with synthetic fuel and non-fossil fuels. Germany and the Scandinavian countries have been making progress in medicine (Socialist system) UK, France, Italy all have scientists working on a variety of projects in bio science, aeronotics, space, medicine, nanotechnology, solar power and other forms of green energy. We can either get ahead of the competition or get behind them. Frankly I'd rather see the USA lead the way as we have in the past. China is also doing research into alternative fuels. Their air has gotten dirty and they are trying to do something about it. (China is still Communist/Socialist)
I can't think who divides people more.....Lush or Newt. Keep Newt out front, too, Repubs......he's a lightening rod for moderates and independents. Keep cow towing to the base.....yeah, that should work! It helped last November, didn't it? Here's an idea...why not come up with some NEW policies to help America instead of the same old song and dance about tax cuts. Gee, now there's an idea! Run with it GOP, run with it!
