Gregg: Budget forecast a lie

From NBC’s Ken Strickland
It was obvious to most Capitol Hill insiders why President Obama wanted Republican Judd Gregg as a member of his cabinet: He's one of the sharpest money-minds in Congress.

But instead of getting Gregg's counsel within the administration, Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner found himself today of the receiving end of Gregg's fiscal conservative wrath.

In a hearing before the Senate Budget Committee Gregg dressed down Geithner with facts, figures, and charts. While always keeping his cool, the exchange was somewhere between a mother's scolding, a drill sergeant's questioning and an attorney's cross examination.

In his opening statement, Gregg politely called the administration's budget forecast a lie.

"The argument that it cuts the debt in half in four years is, ahh, is truly spurious," he told Geithner.

President Obama himself gives Gregg's comments a sense of stinging credibility. When the president introduced Gregg as his nominee for Commerce Secretary last month, he said Gregg is known for is fiscal discipline.

"He shares my deep-seated commitment to guaranteeing that our children inherit a future they can afford," Obama said.

Today, the president's compliment of Gregg turned into an attack on Geithner. Gregg said the budget is essentially "putting on our children's backs a debt they can never get out from underneath."

He added pointedly, "I think we're putting at risk not only our children's future, we're clearly putting at risk the value of a dollar and our ability to sell debt."

When Gregg withdrew his nomination, he said he and the administration were "functioning from a different set of views on many critical items of policy."

Gregg's opening monologue today would indicate that was a gross understatement.

"The argument that this budget doesn't have tax increases [on everyone] is, I think, an 'Alice in Wonderland' view of the budget," he said.

He challenged the budget's math on cutting the debt: "When you take the deficit and quadruple it and then you cut it and half, that's like taking four steps back and two steps forward. That's not making any progress; you're still going backwards."

Gregg questioned why any foreign country would continue to buy up U.S. debt: "Because if I'm in the international marketplace, and I'm looking at this budget, I'm saying to myself, ‘Where's the discipline? Where's the containment?' There isn't any."

In his withdrawal statement last month, Gregg said, "I expect there will be many issues and initiatives where I can and will work to assure the success of the president's proposals."

The budget doesn't appear to be one of them.

If Gregg was so good on finance, why did the country go down into the dumps.  Obviously he wasn't that good because Bush didn't think much of him to listen to or maybe Bush did listen to him and that is why the country is in the dumpster.
"He's one of the sharpest money-minds in Congress." Well that's certainly setting the bar right up there isn't it??
A Smart Girl:

Well said!
If Gregg is such a financial sharpie, why did the last administration not use him?  I sometimes think they let the economy tank on purpose, just to let the new administration grovel and look lame, especially since it looked at the time that Obama was going to win.  Of course, it isn't just our country, it's all over the world.  Something to think about.
Surely, Gregg did more than just mount the Hill and call the budget a lie.  He had to have facts and figures, or at least his own set of predictions, or the Senators would have thrown vegetables at him. Seems like we either denounce Gregg as a lunatic or a traitor, or sing his praises, in neither case knowing whether his ruminations have merit or they don't.

Can we please have some of the substance, if any, of his remarks?
Houston- The stock market has been going up in the last three days.
it's ABOUT TIME someone realizes how clueless Obama is!!!!!!!!!!!!!
don't know what kind of television Ken Strickland was watching, but he needs a new one. I watched the hearing myself. Gregg was like a screaming child looking for the attenetion KEN STRICKLAND gave him.
Geitner handled every criticism from Gregg with intelligent, fact based, professionalism. He had Gregg put his charts back up and explained why they were wrong. THIS IS THE POOREST REPORTING I HAVE SEEN ON FIRST READ. A TOTAL MISREPRESENTATION.

Your full of it too. I watched and that dude Geithner didn't have any answers that were coherent. Gregg is no financial idiot as some may think. He had no power to stop anything during the Bush administration. I would like to know what school of economics did some of you in here graduate from? Geithner is slow and lopsided, and that is just a fact. I know you want to build him up because Obama appointed him. I bet he is gone before the summer is over.
Judd was give the opportunity to play in "The Bigs" and blew it because ______?  The play was just a bit to rough for this person. He fits in real well with the sideline crowd like Boss Limbaugh, Man-Coulter and Billo the Clown. When these clowns think they really have something to contribute, run for an office. Suit-up.
SHOUT OUT TO THE PSYCHO KOOL-AID DRINKERS:  YOUR TREASURY SECRETARY GEITHNER IS A TAX FRAUD, CAN'T GET ANY STAFF BECAUSE THEY'RE ALL TAX FRAUDS OR CRIMINALS.  Sorry for shouting, but it's "tough love" of the truth until OMAMAMAN'S psychotic term is over (if he isn't impeached by then).
Mr. Gregg has gotten rather balsy as of late. Well I know alot of people have lit into Gregg but I think he is good opposition, he means well...which is why Obama respects him. Congressmen often use exaggerated words in their opposition. It's the media that should be mindful of how they report such exchanges. I agree with some, the Secretary's rebuttals should have been noted.
Ed states, "Gregg was there (in Congress), while the economy was slidding into never never land!  Why didn't he stop the Madoff Ponzi scheme?  Madoff will probably go the way of Ken Lay of Enron shame!"

Wasn't Barry there also? Maybe he was too busy voting "present" to notice.
Judd Gregg, too bad he wasn't as fiscally conscientious during the Bush years when he helped with the big debt increase from $5 trillion to $10T.  Guess it only counts if it's the other party; unfortunately, President Obama has to spend this money to clean up Bush and the GOP's fiasco.
Judd lacks any Greggibility.
Here's a thought - the Federal Fiscal Year runs from October 1st (of any given year) to September 30th of the following year.  Here's a question - under whose budget are we currently trapped?  Oh, wait, that's currently operating?  Give our current President a break, and a little more time in office, in order to implement the changes that need to be made.  He will do it!  With some help from Congress - if they will "man up" and provide some help rather than causing more dissent!  Let's give bi-partisanship a chance to work FOR A CHANGE! It won't hurt us to try and work together for our common good - just try. We CAN do it together.  :-)
Is this the same senator who tossed money to his brother (read that pork if that is appropriate) and got over $200,000.00 out of the deal?  And if so was the deal in question legal, as he said in response to questions?  And if legal did it not cost the taxpapers plenty of money?
This annoying attention on the deficit is silly coming from the Republicans who once said the Country needs a running deficit to run.  o_X   They are the ones who said it.  Who are they to complain?
